The dæmons are the souls of the people in Lyra's world. Here in ours, Plato once said that soul is what makes a man to be man, not the body itself. When the gobblers cut the dæmon of a child, they automatically “stole” his humanity and turn him into a being without will; they cut the wings of his soul, his imagination and his capacity to found Logos by appreciating Beauty, Justice and Good in material things, even if they are imperfect, and there's nothing more important than Logos to have a very real experience and opinion of life! In other words, they turn him into an office clerk.
And that's one of the most devastating events that ever happened in the first book. Separating an innocent child and his/her dæmon is like violently ripping your own soul apart. Like all of your humanity is gone forever and what's left of you is only your other half. The lost, broken, soulless half. All you feel is just extreme trauma, pain, suffering and nothing else. It's just tragic to realize that this sort of stuff is still happening to other children out there who are missing and/or kidnapped in real life. Who knows what they're going through right now? It's just horrible.

Her acting along with the other actors/actress' was flawless. But also, at first she didn't want to do the movie and she wasn't going to because of all the controversy that is was going to cause, but then the author of the book personally wrote her a letter saying he wanted her to do the part, and then she did.
@filly07 That's because a long time ago "deamons" were believed to be good spirits that whispered to you what you should do (like a conscience). But the term became twisted in time and it became the way of naming a bad spirit. Then the catholic church used the word "demon" for the voice of evil. So you see it wasn't a bad this at first (Socrates used the term deamon to speak of your "inside voice" so it's a pretty old word), but it altered with the centuries.

Actully, Daemon means 'Spirt'. There's a differance between a Daemon and a Demon. Daemons are spirirts, who were used in vareius legends about Greeks and Wizards. Demons are devils.
@TruthofDilly in book 2, Lyra meets a boy from our world named Will, and she asks him where his daemon is but he thinks she's asking about demons (like the devil) and gets confused, so it's obvious that Phillip Pullman originally intended for it to be pronounced like that and has nothing to do with Hollywood or conspiracy theories. Furthermore, Peake first published his book about daemons in 2008 (a year after the movie was released), whereas Pullman's "The Golden Compass" was published in 1995.
To those of you who are commenting on how Pullman can have soul-like daemons but be an atheist, I have this to say: In my opinion, these books, though fairly obviously against the establishment of organized religion (such as the judeochristian beliefs), are actually highly spiritual. Daemons don't necessarily have to be a soul as most religions think of souls. Pullman is clearly against the idea of souls going to an afterlife (read Amber Spyglass).
The person of the Daemon you toutched can feel your hands on your soule. Its absolutely forbidden, because its to personal. You can consider a form of violating.
The word Daemon means spirits, in ancient Greek mythology Daemon are benevolent spirits, and in the old testament, pronounced as Daimon, it means natural spirits, idols, foreign gods, certain beasts, and natural evil. It is only in the New Testament where Daemon is referred to as evil spirits
That's the Ancient Greek version. The daemons of Golden Compass are based on that. Though I'm not sure if the origianl daemon legends from Greece had the animal stuff.
@elenore88 its cause they were basing the films on the books and in the second book you start finding out how Lyra is the second eve and all that jazz so they wasnt too happy and now we dont get any second or third film :(
Don't hold your breath, it's been put on hold indefnitely when Golden Compass bombed miserably. And rightly so; the completely mangled the story! Honestly, nothing in it made a whole lot of sense; they had events happening out of order, the story was horribly rushed, and they completely cut out the ending. It literally just randomly fades to black and credits roll when they weren't supposed to. It's a shame, but it's no surprise that a sequel isn't being made, all things considered.
Your wrong. Daemons may sound like Demon, but like I said, they appear in Greek, Wizard and even made-in-American legends. That you pronouce it as Demon, and that it appears in other legends, doesn't mean its evil. And not all spirits are evil. There are evil spirits, but not all of them. Besides, if you ignore how you say it and being a spirit, then what is evil about Daemons? A friend for life who is there for you to comfort and help, seems pretty good to me. Unless its a mean Daemon.
@filly07 If I recall corectly Philip Pullman actually has a comment about that right at the begining of the book. He wrote that he chose a diffrent style of writing but the prenounciation ''demon'' because it fitted the style of the story atleast I there was something like that in those lines XD
Pan looks so much like my old Elon who is in my profile pic! He also looks like my girl Margot in my channel banner. Other than my dad they were probably the two best friends I had through high school :) I've got more human friends now.
Hint: Everyone already has a daemon; we call it the Soul or Self. Watch the first two minutes of the movie. "There are many universes, and many Earths, parallel to each other. Worlds like yours, where peoples Souls live inside their bodies. And worlds like mine, where they walk beside us as animal spirits we call daemons". And dust? Dust is what connects all the worlds. In our world we call it quantum physics or string theory.

Also whats interesting about the PFC is that when its underdeveloped you are more prone to violence and depression and are generally unhappy.
I mean, he says one of his biggest inspirations for writing the His Dark Materials trilogy (and where the actual title comes from) is Paradise Lost, which is all about the devil's fall from heaven from the devil's point of view. So pullman's telling the story from the devil's point of view.
what, that we may have invisible daemons? If so I so agree. The book was very complex, and the god statement was very young adult and adult situation. I would say, you have an animal spirit, that fits you. Like how some people have mental based familiars. Very hard to describe, yes. ^_^

Yeah, I love that scene where the giant gorilla picks up Nichol and carries her up the Empire State building, then the airplanes attack.. She was awsome in that one..
Aside from my malicious comment to that other person..
This movie looks fascinating, everything looks great, i can't wait to see it! :)
Awesome!
Yes elenore... something having CLOSE to the same name means they are EXACTLY ALIKE! WOW! (So in other words... NO... it's NOT that "CLEAR CUT") BIBLE THUMPERS are just SO GREAT!
I’m catholic and I love this movie
Looks like we got a live one! Just an small little cut and you will be "cured", just like bending an key, once bent that key will never open the door again.
I took like ten quizes and they all said my daemon would be a wolf. That would be awesome to always have a wolf with me as my best friend....
it doesn't directly say it but everything is a representation of something else in fantasy
Finally someone who understands!
I love Hester.
There's a big differance between Demeons and Daemons.
Whos watching this in 2020
@elenore88 its cause they were basing the films on the books and in the second book you start finding out how Lyra is the second eve and all that jazz so they wasnt too happy and now we dont get any second or third film :(
Who else got told to watch this by school
Is it JUST me or does it look like Salcilia (Rogers dæmon) is just DISAPPEARING when they're on the roof at 1:45?
Don't hold your breath, it's been put on hold indefnitely when Golden Compass bombed miserably.
And rightly so; the completely mangled the story!
Honestly, nothing in it made a whole lot of sense; they had events happening out of order, the story was horribly rushed, and they completely cut out the ending. It literally just randomly fades to black and credits roll when they weren't supposed to.
It's a shame, but it's no surprise that a sequel isn't being made, all things considered.
I wish I had a daemon too, and I agree with you on the other things too
He wrote that he chose a diffrent style of writing but the prenounciation ''demon'' because it fitted the style of the story
atleast I there was something like that in those lines XD
I loved this film when I was little I read the books and I loved it even more I was 12 when I read the books and I was 8 when I watched the film .
Pan looks so much like my old Elon who is in my profile pic! He also looks like my girl Margot in my channel banner. Other than my dad they were probably the two best friends I had through high school :) I've got more human friends now.
In the book, someone mentioned a man with a Dolphin-Daemon. He couldn't live the shore or boat, because his Daemon couldn't follow him.
If only I can see my spirit guide too! A form of an animal would be nice
Maybe but the pre frontal cortex has an increase in blood supply when you meditate, which I do and I can tell you its the best thing I have ever done, it makes you happier, and yes you are right you don't accept what the establishment say either, you think for yourself more, so yep you might be onto something. Also whats interesting about the PFC is that when its underdeveloped you are more prone to violence and depression and are generally unhappy.
This movie had way more heart and a way better cast than the hbo series its a shame they didnt stick to the plot
wow what a very cool great real-looking actor i bet this movie is a good movie
why is Haymitch so old???????????????????????????????
i mixed up lee and haymitch help
Interesting idea. Unfortunately at thee start of the first book, Northen Lights, it tells us it's pronounced "demon"
I do agree with YOU, though
Depends at how you look at it. I think Butterflies mean Grace, Kindness and Beuty.
thanks!
I mean, he says one of his biggest inspirations for writing the His Dark Materials trilogy (and where the actual title comes from) is Paradise Lost, which is all about the devil's fall from heaven from the devil's point of view. So pullman's telling the story from the devil's point of view.
Daemon = Qodam ?
what, that we may have invisible daemons? If so I so agree. The book was very complex, and the god statement was very young adult and adult situation. I would say, you have an animal spirit, that fits you. Like how some people have mental based familiars. Very hard to describe, yes. ^_^
the book states that it is rare but not unheard of. it makes no mention of what it means.
Why did they skip the scene we see at the very beginning, it were these sorts of scenes the movie needed.
Omg Freddie Highmore !
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I never read the book but wasyrra cut from pam? Why was pam still with lyra after being pht in the intercession.
I stand corrected!
