- The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon directed by Nora Twomey. Based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis.
The Breadwinner received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, but lost to Coco.
Movies name is "The Breadwinner" it's loosely based off the book series following a family living under Taliban controlled Afghanistan, and when the father is arrested for having a foreign education, the daughter Parvana has to disguise herself as a boy to go out in public and work to provide for the family, the book is a really good read as well as the second one
The main purpose of this movie is to justify American occupation and mass murder of traditional Muslims by dehumanizing them
Thank you. I'm going to check those out now, and see if they're appropriate for my kids to read. I try to expose them to as many stories of bravery as I can find. But some have to be watered down to suit their current level.

Stop making a joke of yourself. Don't bring religion into this. The people shown in the movie are misusing religion to control the people. In Islam, you're only allowed to marry after hitting puberty for both men and women. And marriage at a young age is not obligatory. Prophet Mohammed married at 25, and his wife was 40. Jokes like these make you look stupid by the way.

So, the movie is *not* propaganda, I know because of how the demonizing of Idris makes it feel like you are supposed to hate him for his culture, but instead it implies that Idris is immature and holds these ignorant belief that are brought on him by the strict cultural customs of the Taliban, Islam itself does not force women to cover themselves, it's not supposed to do that, nor is it supposed to defend perverse treatment of children and woman by saying they should cover themselves. The point is to make you realize that Idris is treating the culture and religion as strict and demanding because those are the values of the people in his ear. He's not simply a Muslim. He's apart of the Taliban, who force their beliefs onto all of the countries they control.
Also, this is based on a book by the same name. It is a gorgeous story. Pain, unfairness, torture, friendship, etc. The film itself is great. I imagine the books are better. It draws a realistic picture of the time. A necessary tale.

@@mikehorb9485You clearly haven't seen this movie (title is: The Breadwinner. It was nominated for an Oscar)
The Breadwinner is about a family living in Taliban controlled Afghanistan in the 90s. The father here isn't an extremist. The war he's referring to was the Soviet-Afghan war. He was not a member of the Taliban, and when he says the war "we fought" he's using the word "we" loosely - as in the entirety of the afghan people fighting to protect their independence from Soviet Invasion. Unfortunately that war left the democratic government of the time weak, which allowed the Taliban to take power. He didn't lose his leg in some holy war, he lost it when his home was destroyed in the bombings of Kabul during the war.
The father laments the loss of the days of the republic when women weren't treated so harshly. He lies in this scene when he claims his daughter is promised to someone (he's just trying to get the Taliban guy to back off). And he later gets arrested for teaching women how to read.

The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 for multiple reasons. One of the main motivations was to prop up a Soviet-friendly communist regime that faced opposition from various Afghan factions. The Soviet Union wanted to maintain influence in Afghanistan and prevent an ideological threat from spreading to neighboring countries.
The rise of the Taliban in the mid-1990s can be attributed to various factors. One reason was the power vacuum created after the Soviet withdrawal, which led to a prolonged state of civil war and instability in Afghanistan. Amidst this chaos, the Taliban, composed mainly of Pashtun fighters and influenced by a strict interpretation of Sunni Islam, emerged as a force that promised stability, security, and the imposition of their own brand of Islamic law. Some Afghan individuals, disillusioned by the ongoing factional conflicts and lawlessness, found appeal in the Taliban's message and joined their ranks.
The United States had multiple interests in Afghanistan. During the Soviet-Afghan War, the U.S. viewed the conflict through the lens of the Cold War and saw an opportunity to challenge Soviet expansionism. The U.S. provided financial and military support to the mujahideen fighters, including Afghan factions that later evolved into the Taliban.
After the Soviet withdrawal, U.S. interests diversified. One of the key concerns was to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorism that could threaten American national security. Additionally, the U.S. sought to promote stability in the region, combat drug trafficking from Afghanistan, and protect its geopolitical interests in South and Central Asia.
It is important to note that the motivations and interests of the U.S., the Soviet Union, and the Afghan people are multifaceted and complex, and this summary provides a broad overview of the main factors involved.
