His Dark Materials - Mary talks to Dust (Angels)

- A scene where the Scholar Mary tries to talk to Dust, then she realizes the Dust itself are the Angels.
His Dark Materials Season 2, episode 4. The tower of angels.
I DONT CLAIM ANY RIGHTS TO THIS VIDEO. ALL BELONGS TO HBO.
Love that they included the sarcastic "evidently" from the book
Does this season stay true and in order to the book?
@@wanderingpidgeon8195 It is. The sequence is a little bit different, since this scene was basically near the end of the second book and lot of stuff hapened before, but the events are almost the same, there are just small changes done, but I dont think it is bad.
@@wanderingpidgeon8195 it is quite faithful to the books in terms of order although obviously some things had to be shuffled to fit the series format. But it's as good as you could get which means really good.
@@wanderingpidgeon8195 Lyra initially communicates with the Cave by imagining the pictures from the alethiometer on the screen and interpreting those. Mary then realizes she can program it to display language instead of pictures. In the book, it simply displays words on the screen rather than speaking to her, but this obviously translates to the screen much better. The cheeky "evidently" is crucial in order to prove to Mary that it is not just an algorithm she is conferring with, but a conscious entity.
The best scene
I dont get it. So dark matter and angels are the same thing. But what does angel mean in this context? Does this mean that the universe is build of billions of living conscious beings? Also what does the spirit thing mean? Im so confused
It's intentionally ambiguious at this point and will make more sense as the series continues :)
@@ace5762 oh okay. Thanks for not spoiling anything then. I’ll just wait and see
I've only read some of the first book (and watched the first + second season), but I think what it means is that the angels are beings formed out of complex structures like us, but out of dark matter instead of regular matter. We know from the first season that the people in Lyra's world call God the Authority, and it's possible that this Authority exists and might be a superior dark matter being. When Mary asked her question that had the phrase human evolution, I have a feeling that the Angels intervened when we were nothing more than tree-dwelling primates, possibly turning us into some kind of weapon, since the Angel answered the word VENGEANCE for the final question which was about why they created us. Only time will tell what we are a weapon for (maybe the Authority?).
I have been waiting 13 years for this scene to be on screen. I couldn't be more pleased with it.
Right? What a stunning adaptation!

So glad with this casting. Mary was my favourite character from the books. Also, I'm not sure who the actress is, but her accent is so lovely.
Simone Kirby, I love her in this!!!!
Simone Kirby. She has a Dublin Irish accent.
If you watch Doctor who you know who that voice is... But for those who don't she plays Cleopatra on Matt Smith's run
I already love her, since her first conversation with Lyra
She's perfect.
Beautiful that the Angels' voice is a mix of high and low voices but speaking together. Really similar to other representations of gods and similar.. Wise and powerful, ancient
I really like her, the character and actress, she instantly reminded me of Susan Sarandon!
Sigourney Weaver to me :D
This scene made me so happy. They're absolutely definitely going there. I can forgive the series for being imperfect when they are willing to tell the story in full.
Just curious, what about the show do you find imperfect? I haven't read the books yet (although I really want to now) so I'm not that educated.
@@ndudiobichi3515 Think there's no show/movie that that has accomplished perfect adaptation of a book and partly that is because books often have a lot of internal monologue that can be really hard to translate on screen.
Still talking about this series, I'm super happy with what they've done and to finally see an adaptation of this story that it deserves.

@@rosiehamlin1413 there is something to spoil as not all people have read the books and are going off purely on the live action adaption so by you talking about how the angel gets killed and other stuff as i have seen you in the comment section multiple times spoiling stuff they wouldn't know that and you are ruining their experience
I also would like to know what you find imperfect. I have read the books and what i only find "imperfect" is how slow for a tv show the show sometimes is. But if you remember, the first book was also kinda slow. The second book tho... You can't put it down.
this part was lowkey so scary 😭 I haven’t read the books, I’m just watching the show but I rly was not expecting the angels to say that at the end
Since it didn't make it into the show but was first revealed at this point in the book: these are the rebel angels under Satan (not that he appears) who lost the war in heaven. Which is where the vengeance comes in. Cool right?
@@tazcooper3169 Satan does appear; she's the one speaking in this scene. Actually, both characters in this scene are Satan, because Mary's role is to play the Serpent in the Garden.
@@Sesharon oh yes! I knew about Mary, but I meant the original tempter, not the new one. But I forgot Xaphania was Satan.
In the books, it turned out the original sin was actually good for humanity because it gave us the ability to feel, to love, to create, to heal, to know and to act. That is why the books were considered a ban in some countries. The Church didn't like the theory of Dust and angels and all that explained in such a way.

His Dark Materials is basically Paradise Lost remade in fantasy clothing. There are a faction of angels that want to reignite the war against God and Heaven.
The angels were created by Dust but the first of them deceived the others by telling them He was their Creator and therefore He was superior and could rule them all. Xaphania (the angel talking to Mary here) discovered the truth about the Creator (also called God or The Authority) and told the other angels, some of whom followed her into a rebellion against the Kingdom of Heaven. Hence the vengeance she's talking about, for having deceived for all this time.
This scene and the novels in general make me ponder how and why humans became conscious beings. We know how the brain is powered and is stimulated, but what reason or purpose why we humans became conscious in the first place? Why us and not some other species that inhabit this planet?
It is strange to be here. Have you ever wondered if this fictional material might have a basis in human experience? Why do all human cultures have near death experiences? Why do people still have vivid meaningful experiences even when there is no blood flow to the brain? What are we? I'm with you dawg this is a good question. Why us? Who and or what are we?
We aren't the only conscious beings. "Conscious" is also hard to define. Crows are evidently conscious of their deaths and are very intelligent, and yet aren't capable of the things us humans do. Dolphins are also incredibly intelligent and conscious of the pain they can inflict on others, and yet they don't do the things we humans do. We've also had multiple other human species at one point, and yet we either killed them, or (apparently more likely) interbred with them until our species became homogenized into modern day humans.
@@writershard5065 yes we all wonder what it is that is doing the looking. How does the ear ear or eye eye? How does one be? What is the observer? I have no answers. Humans have been asking these questions forever, it is only the last 150 years we forgot what we were under all the culture and memes.... Peace be into you and best of luck to you out there. Great casting for Mary Malone
Loving this casting so far ❤
She's a very important character integral to the series, esp since she's the creator of the third item 😉
The vengeance the angels talk about is that one of John Milton's Paradise Lost. Because of Pullman's His Dark Materials I've read that book and... I can barely understand why Satan was a rebel against God and the Christ, but I don't like what he did with Adam and Eve. That's why the angels say to Mary Malone that they intervened in human evolution: Satan wanted to destroy God's new creation by pure envy and, as the main result of his plan, he introduced the first humans into counsciousness, a divine weapon with two sides, as Will's subtle knife.
No, you're wrong. The original story in the books are not about God, Adam & Eva or Satan. The angels here are not the same as in religion.
In the books all things in the universe are connected by dust. The angels are make of dust so they have many special abilities (for example, they can travel between the worlds). The first angel is called "The Autorithy". When he came to live he said the whole universe was his creation (thats is wrong because it exsisted bevor his birth). Because of this the angels break up. Some follow the Autorithy and some do not. The angels Mary speaks to are the ones who do not follow.
I think you are a religious person and I respect that but please don't compare fiction (the story of the books) with reality because often authors change facts in their texts. :)
@@pandarian4523 You're correct in recounting the lore of HDM, but the original comment you were referring to is describing Paradise Lost, not HDM :) Paradise Lost is a poem by John Milton that chronicles the rebellion of Satan against God and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Philip Pullman has frequently confirmed HDM was hugely inspired by Paradise Lost, in fact the name 'His Dark Materials' (and also 'The Golden Compass') comes from lines in the poem.
@@pandarian4523 I was referring to the argument of John Milton's poem Paradise Lost, a text that has a lot of literary influence in His Dark Materials trilogy.
In fact, the Authority wants to control and destroy conscious and free life, while other angels struggle to nourish it and make it more complex: the fallen angels of this series are parallel to the devil who gave the apple to Eve, but the story reinvents this situation and instead of saying that it was a sin that Eve disobeyed God, It was actually proof that she was conscious and able to think for herself, these fallen angels seek the fall of "paradise" and the liberation of conscious life.
It’s so weird thinking about a specific scene for years then watching it happen.

She does have a device. Albeit an imperfect one.

@@mrspidey80 It seems like a more modern/simple Alethiometer lol
Question! I thought Lyra was the only one able to read the althiometer without the books. Even with the books, it takes others days to get an answer! What makes her (Mary) able to have a full conversation with dust? I’m confused!
@@michaelgorden6169 Lyra and Mary are both integral to the angels' plan. So the short answer is Dust/Angels need to be able to talk to them.

MIND BLOWING
*Spoiler*
The story behind Authority and how it accquired power and claim itself to be "Creator" is extremely close to how the Buddha described the origins of henotheistic and monotheistic belief systems. My memory is not good on this but according to it He said that in the begining there were planes of existence and (somehow, can't remember the way) beings came into existence. The first being who came into existence claimed to the others that he was the one who created them and therefore, he is the superior, or "God" for the rest.
So the god in this series is not omnipotent?
@@AlecArtComics claimed to be, but really isn't AFAIK.

what do you mean exactly?

I was too young when I read the book.
Why do the Angels seek vengence? Against whom?
The Authority / God.
Basically, these angels rejected the notion that God/the Authority was the creator of everything, which he indeed wasn't. He is merely the first angel who formed from Dust and told everyone who formed after him that he had created them.
So they rebelled against him and lost. To retaliate, they groomed humanity to become smarter and more inquisitive hoping it would eventually lead to humans rebelling against God (and winning, since they are stronger than angels).
This is what Asriel is doing.
In a way this story is a take on the myth of creation but with God as the Bad Guy.
@Ale Alfini I think , much like elementary particles, it was always there since the beginning of the universe. And just like elementary particles eventualls ended up forming atoms and then the first stars due to localized instabilities, dust ended up forming angels.
God. But God is actually not God. He was the first angel formed of Dust and made everyone who came after him believe he is the absolute being. He even dared creating a prison camp for those people who departed, making death actually a living and endless torture. To be honest, I was glad the Autority and his regent Metatron were defeated in the end.
Go read genesis 6. The fallen angels have always been here , and they had children with humans. Hence ancient aliens, ancient "gods" advanced ancient technology etc.

Mary was my favorite character from start to finish. Her whole journey was amazing to watch!
Im an ignorant... but i have a Question be free to liberate me of the chains of igborance... ¿Why vengance? why that thing want vengance?
The angels Mary is talking to here (in reality dark matter/dust life forms) want vengeance against "God" (in reality just the first angel that came into being and who simply claimed to have created the universe when he did not). They rebelled against him, not believing that he was really the creator, but lost the war against his followers. So instead they guided the evolution of humans and other beings across the multiverse so that they can defeat him for them. That's what they mean by vengeance.
