However if you sit In front of native instruments guitar rig in your DAW of choice for long enough and blend amps you can nail his tone (or anyone else’s for that matter) It’s not your gear it’s your ear as the saying goes, there is no secret there is only sweat

honestly i've seen the episode and in terms of production / engineering / recording i don't know what the 'secret' is, i think (as always) the "secret" (more so a personal approach crafted after years of attempts that is unique to that person and that person only) lies more in songwriting / composition - i understand it a little bit, mystique is a powerful thing as an artist, something i can attest to first hand however i never learned how something was done and was less in awe, if anything it made me even more invested and i really think that is an equally important thing -- there's a number of producers and engineers i can think of that over the years i have looked up to and read as deep as i could into their process, the mystique was very important in some of them but equally if not more was the bit of technical information they gave, in doing so they shaped how i thought about music and how i approached the worlds of production and engineering as a whole, in short they shaped a generation - what's more important?

The secret to Josh's music is he has a great voice and is very good at throwing it around, and also has amazing musicians and cool equipment to work with. Not sure why he won't share production or engineering techniques or the equipment he uses, nobody is going to sound like him and his band. Kind of petty, when he isnt even the one that came up with some of these production and engineering things.

I can see both sides. Eric contributed to the album, even though it wasn't his songs or his vision.. But he still contributed to the sound. And I can see Josh's side. Josh has always preferred to work with his own people and Eric was forced on him. And Eric (22 years later) is now in a place where he wants to chat about his past work (and to clear the air) and Josh isnt. Does it matter how you or I feel? Not really, its between them.
Still, after seeing the video, it just sounds like great performances played by solid musicians, and mic'ed up with good equipment. I think the album would still be killer on rented backline gear if you have the same personnel and recording techniques. I think everyone wants to find a smoking gun or rare piece of gear (good luck affording a peavy decade anymore).. but it always comes down to the players. Josh (and crew) are just that good .

I remember reading an interview with Josh, and he said that he doesn't really want to share his secrets, just because he doesn't want to take away the joy of finding your own sound and style. He says that it took him quite a long time to achieve this, and that it was quite a rewarding experience. He also shared a few "tricks" he used recording TCV's album

Josh shares enough to inspire others to take the basics and make their mistakes become their style, and that really is enough for me,and Eric shares enough to take that style that evolved and prepare to put it to print efficiently without wasting costly studio time when the clock is running! I APPRECIATE you both for that!

Robert Johnson turned his back on audiences at points in his performance. Some say to "corner load" for a particular sound. Some say to hide his techniques from being cribbed. Louie Armstrong draped s handkerchief over his hand to hide his fingering from copycats, not to have it handy.
When you sweat out something new why let others cheapen it to their profit? I've seen the innovator accused of being the thief when the more famous rip-off artist gets it to the mass market first. How galling has that gotta be?

If every single bit of information we're out there for what he did it wouldn't matter, it's an art and a lot of it has to do with his ear and nobody's going to do it exactly the same way as he can, and if it were out there and he ended up losing jobs because another person took his information and got better than he could then he wasn't that good in the first place.
At some point he's going to die in that information is just going to disappear with him then, and if it's that special of a thing it should be shared with the world and it's pretty selfish to deprive the world of something like that

A certain type of artist is really protective of the way the tricks and illusions are performed. Josh Homme wants that for his fans and I respect it, because far too often the alternative sounds something like: "There is no magic, I promise you. There isn't a single, solitary reason to worry your pretty little head about any of that once you've purchase my new Songwriter's Home Recording and Bathroom Mastering course for $39.95 today." We've severely mistreated art in this age of information.
