Troy definitely has his own swagger. I’m glad he Joined the Queens. If he was still A Perfect Circle, I don’t think he would’ve been able to shine/play as a performer the way he does with QOTSA
Troy inserts the colour where its needed. He sits back in the pocket and plays exactly what's needed to be played, nothing less and nothing more; but we all know he can do so much more. Total pro musician
Troy inspired me to get a Jazzmaster. I looked at a Fender Pro and also his signature model and they're amazing. They were too expensive for me so I got the J. Mascis Jazzmaster and that's great too.
@@davids9192 It's a great guitar definitely. Build quality is superb and it sounds great. The pickups were a bit too hot for me when I first started playing it but I like them a lot now
@@LittleFoilFish The build quality of my J Mascis is on a par with my 2016 American Standard Strat. I think the Chinese factory must take a certain pride in producing this model as can be judged by the consistent levels of positive feedback. I know what you mean about the pick ups but they can be tamed with EQ. Definitely a keeper !
Van Leeuwen is one of the reasons I bought a Jazzmaster Performer a couple of months ago, can't stress enough how much I love that guitar. Unique player, with a great feel for melody and rhythm. Great interview as well, again Lee!
Thank you for talking with players of so many different genres. Spent some time talking with Troy a few years ago (we'd played with the same drummer once but talked mostly about movies, I think) and he's a smart guy as well as a fine player.
troy is such a great guitarist, his sound is so unique and innovative. i just love his approach. queens of the stone age are such a great band. one of my favourites!
Can't unsee: the light ring reflection in his shades looks like (cross)eyes from certain angles. Cool guy, always really liked his general style and sound, and of course his footwork on stage.
I never thought I would’ve liked an offset guitar like the jazzmaster. I’ve been a LesPaul/Strat guy forever. UNTIL I PLAYED ONE!! I am loving his signature guitar and the oxblood is 1st on my hit list!!
nice work scoring this one, great interview lee. and for a guy who's in one of the biggest rock bands on the planet, troy seems incredibly down to earth
Cool interview. Always thought that part of Josh’s reticence to divulge his gear came from what happened to the Ovation GP after he became famous and it was recognised that that was the guitar he played. It went from a fairly unsuccessful, relatively cheap on the second hand market, discontinued niche model to suddenly in demand and with prices escalating significantly such as to make it hassle for Josh to source and justify buying them to continue to use as touring guitars simply because he made them famous and desirable. If I was him I’d shut up about what I played too, especially if it was discontinued gear. 🤷🏼♂️
I played the cheaper Applause version in the early 90's, and even it was amazing. It just wasnt the Les Paul I was brainwashed into thinking I needed to go along with my Tele.
I own the Oxblood version with rosewood fretboard of the TVL Jazzmaster. Don't be put off by the MIM badge. They're really really really well made. Easely on par with the US made fenders
Talked about his mindset. A lot like mine. Talked about the artists that he listened to and inspired him. Same artists for me. Talked about the guitars he loves. I'm with him. And this is actually one of the few guitarists that really should have been there on the plateau with you. What a fooking waste, he's one of the most brilliant minds when it comes to tone shaping :'(
Need to raise the bridge and shim the neck for action to prevent strings from popping off the saddles. They were designed with archtops in mind. Need more break angle from the strings coming off the tremolo tailpiece to the bridge. Don't feed the 'jm/jag bridges need to be upgraded to mustang bridges' - myth if you are not setting up a guitar as intended. Every time someone disses a jm/jag bridge without knowing how to set up, a kitten dies. Hehe.
@Ed Raposo you’re so desperate to be right, you’re not thinking. Boognish’s comment was bang on, you’re ignorant to the fact of who this guy is. By the way, yes, everybody is ignorant about something.
@Ed Raposo Man, you're ignorant and arrogant lol. Yes, everyone is ignorant about a great many things, if you take that as an insult then you should lighten up on your ego. But yes, Troy is awesome and you should check out A Perfect Circle and Failure incase you don't know them (ignorance).
I really think Troy isn’t appreciated enough. He sculpts sounds like few other guitarist can it’s insane
Couldn’t agree more!
Troy definitely has his own swagger. I’m glad he Joined the Queens. If he was still A Perfect Circle, I don’t think he would’ve been able to shine/play as a performer the way he does with QOTSA
I'm thinking the music aficionados know how dominant he is. Especially in the rock world.
He's definitely one of my most influential guitarists, along side Josh, Cantrell and Joe perry among others
Lee is just a top bloke.
QOTSA, one of the most important and interesting rock bands of the last 20 years. Keep up the good work with the interviews Lee. Good stuff.
Love QOTSA!
I think they are the most important band in the last 20 years. Just a great band and in the end they should be considered as one of the best ever.
Holy shit never expected this one
Troy is a guitar legend. His bands are awesome and his collaborations are great too, like his work with Chelsea Wolfe.
Met Troy at a bar in Seattle and thanked him for his work in Failure, A Perfect Circle and QOTSA - he was surprised and thankful - love this guy.

For most “normal” players the J Mascis JM is as good as it gets Jazzmaster wise.

Great interview. One thing I always forget is that Troy was in A Perfect Circle
If you search “summersault 2000 a perfect circle” there is a little clip from Canada’s much music back in the day. Troy was the same guy back then…😊
Awesome interview, Troy is a great, interesting player.

I could listen to Troy talk for hours. Just a cool, down to earth, dude. (Also, I would go to a bar called Troys.😂)

Oh my god. I just got my TVL Jazzmaster back from my guy who does setups. What a coincidence.
How is the guitar? 😊 did you set it up for C standard tuning?
