Luxury Beliefs are ideas and opinions that confer status on the upper class and infer while often inflicting costs on the lower class
Chris Hedges comes from a slightly different angle but he uses the related term, boutique activism.
I like that one, too!
I love that this is framed as a social pathology of the left and not the literal economic policy of the right.
Luxury beliefs are an elite instrument to distinguish themselves. If you want to be part of the club, you have to suspend your disbelief of, for example, men being able to transform into women.
'I can't tell you what a woman is; I'm not a biologist' -high priest Jackson
Absolutely. It’s virtue signaling.
Upper class is always on the lookout for pitchforks.
This an absolute game changer.
Right?! This sums up decades of what working Americans have been trying to point out to middle/upper class liberals.
4.22 Many who have low economic value often want nothing to do with influence and control of people, as their experiences of being controlled by others is a negative experience. Most of them just want to be left alone. I think your assumption that poor people wanting power and influence in mis-informed. With respect Rob (apart from that; great banter)
Good point!
Rob, you look like my 28 year old nephew (my brother's son). His heritage is as follows:
From his mother - Chinese, New Zealand Maori
From his father (my side): Canary Islands [ (1)"Guanche" aboriginal = North African "Berber" + (2) Spanish, Portuguese, Italian].
People "at the bottom" still want status and still want it through overt displays of materialism. That's why people in urban ghettos waste a ton of money on Tmberland boots for their newborn and Louis Vitton bags etc.
I'd love to know how this got on to my homepage... Great stuff man keep it up 👍
Merci beaucoup , Thanks for this very interesting theory.I will share it.
Like driving a Tesla?
I think that it is an important part of a luxury belief that it inflict cost on a lower class and this is how it is luxurious: the piores cannot believe in these things, because they cannot pay for these things, like electric cars, expensive oil, organic food and so on. Thank you very much!
I don’t - Never attribute malice to what can be explained with sheer stupidity or ignorance.
It’s not that rich people want a cost inflicted on poors, it’s that they don’t care. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference.
Poors are far more aware of what it looks like to be rich than the rich understand what it looks and feels like to be poor.
@@MattFoleysGhost if you don't attribute nalice tô what can be explained by stupidity, it's because you don't live in Brazil.
People are bad. People with power are bad people that can affect your life.
Which is why hipster bars drink Rainer beer like the common folk. Makes so much sense
In my area, it's Pabst and Carhartt clothes. They often look like they are headed for a camping trip.
"Do what I say not what I do."
The ruling upper classes have always had "luxury beliefs". Since the year Dot. Some of them can be regarded as a positive contribution to society. It depends on how practical it would have been to adopt them in regard to the rest of the population.
Thanks for all the examples, I learned a lot...
@@eli-wq4ql I say old chap. Not much point in letting someone like yourself know more than they should.
Besides, it's not going to do you much good knowing any more than you do anyway. The point being, there's little you can do about it.
So be a sport about it and toddle off. There's a good fellow.

I can tell you are a snob, I can see why that offended you. You have nothing to share or teach, because you hollow, no cap ancient one.

I hold you to the same standard that I hold myself too. I was looking for information and didn't provide it. Your lack of a single example means you can't stand behind your message and yes I really wanted to know.

Good video. Interestingly, in my families experience, the upper class doesn't regard Mark Zuckerberg as " upper class " for reasons I won't go into. He basically seems flakey and rich by fluke. Poor people look up to rappers and athletes. They might be " rich " but hold little influence to us.
Lots of drawbacks to New money...
@@carolyna.869"New money?" Is it 1900?
In the U.S., they do it with gold teeth, Mercedes, and EBT cards.
Truth
Celebrity has replaced fancy dress.
This was actually pretty good.
Vacuum out the "actually" and the "pretty" and you will have a more honest comment. Lol.
The cost is to the owner class people are placing value on mental health and not allowing themselves to be manipulated by out dated religious ideas that dont serve them
If they really valued their mental health, they would mind their own business.
We see this in Naperville Illinois with the elite upper far right class in town. It’s the old guard in Naperville who have been ruling town for decades.
For me, what is largely missing here are examples, actual examples, of these so-called luxury beliefs.
Rob’s appearance on episode 225 of ‘Walk-Ins Welcome with Bridget Phetasy’ contains a lot of examples.
He once mentioned that a classmate spouted off that all families are equal. Further questioning revealed that she had been raised by her own married biological mother and father and planned on doing the same in her own life.
It's called oneupmanship.
The ideological and idealistic elites fiddle when Rome burns
bell curve meme
I wonder if Henderson has read Paul Fussel' classic book, Class...
It seems that X class people would be the well educated or simply those without status anxiety who openly support Trump or Brexit. Interesting times!
In his book, Troubled, Henderson mentions he read Class.
A luxury belief is that you can work your way up.
Related to the conspicuous display of holes in the blue jeans, still courted by the young of wealthy families.
I quite like Rob’s basic conceptual framework here but he could do a better job at describing what he considers to be the “upper classes” & “lower classes.” Veblen (who Henderson likes to quote) was focussed primarily on the economic distinctions between the ordinary working class & Fat cat robber Barton’s. Henderson seems to be focusing more on hybridized economic-cultural elites.
*it's ok to fail.* as they say in vc circles. That's a luxury belief. Most people, entrepreneurs can't afford to fail😂
Rob Henderson is so intellectual and cute 😍😩
These ideas are not new, you just counted a term for them
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
What remains of your culture now little boy blue
did you give back the treasure you stole
did the demons within set you free from your sin
but deny you the key to your soul
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
there is only one path you must choose
did Marie Antoinette with her last cigarette declare
“Give the poor beggar my shoes!”
Are you paying the price for redemption
is there more to be gained than is lost
did you sign your confession not learning your lesson
and end up just counting the cost
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
there is only one path you must find
did the first man in space feel a bit out of place
when he thought that they’d left him behind
Now you’ve got to be blind not to notice
that the worlds not the way that it seems
and if all you can do is just think about you
then you’re too busy living your dreams
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
this is only one moment in time
could Houdini escape without being awake
to the forces by which he was tied
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
there is only one path you will need
take the road straight ahead and don’t ever forget
that you don’t have to win to succeed

Do I hear any vocal fry?
what is being signaled by middle class women wearing badly ripped jeans
Equality and being for the people
Torn jeans have been fashionable on & off since the late ‘80s (at least.) And sometimes people just like to wear old jeans that have some Wear because they’re comfortable. What are alt-right edgelords trying to signal when they whine about other people’s fashion choices?
