Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 чер 2024
- In the third and final part of our series from Eric Valentine on guitar recording, see how the respected producer/engineer crafts a shimmering surf guitar sound in the vein of Smash Mouth or Third Eye Blind. In 1990 Eric recorded our demo (Murder Bay) in his bedroom when he was 19 I think. 2" tape and ADAT. He was the same alien genius then as well. Atlantic wanted to use his demo's instead of re-recording the album he was so good. Blessed to have crossed paths
The fact that Third Eye Blind’s first album sounds like it was made yesterday is a testament to this man’s genius.
I love how he goes full 'guitar face' whilst demo'ing the sounds
This dude just oozes musicality
You know you've made it when you have a 'reverb room" instead of plugin.
At home I am thinking about just using my bathroom. It won't be perfect, but definitively worth a try.
@@NightPaddle It'll work. Just a little bit of room reverb can add a lot to a recording, depending on how much you blend it in. If you can do it, stairways are SUUUPER reverby. Helped some guy at my old school record some solo acoustic stuff in our highschool staircase. Massive sound. (Maybe just nicely ask a local school or public building if you can come in there for a couple hours on a closed day and record.)
@@juno980 have speakers your bathroom and have the sound with reverb plugin or hardware and have the mic's placed at the reflections of the wall and the effect will sound longer then if just using the bathroom verb.
pro trick : you can watch movies at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Bowen Owen definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :)
Would love an Eric Valentine's drums series!
I actually love that shimmering surf guitar sound… ☮🔥
He even uses the terms "tremolo" and "vibrato" correctly. :)
His job is to know these things
Man, he even uses terms capacitor, transisor, dc threshold etc in tremendous way that we're noob could understand what he said.
Haha, yes, rare thing indeed.
BUT, he uses “phase” and “polarity” interchangeably.
Dude is such a brilliant musician and engineer.
I can't believe the difference the vari cap cable makes. He gets great guitar tones.
Great video, the tone he's getting is incredible! Check out the studio ghost in the background at 15:30 ;)
dang... this sound is absolutely incredible. I wish there was a bit more detail on dealing with the ground loop and what exact utility gear he's using with the transformers. I'm gonna have to try a very budgeted version of this idea soon.
Also that cable!
Eric is the man. I just love watching him work and seeing the way he thinks.
"late night wakeups" -hilarious.
Finally, a video on surf guitar. I'm inspired to go downstairs and record my jaguar now. Microphones out in the room. Thank you so much for this ❤️
Man, I bet it is blast tracking a record with Eric.
Holy shit thats an deep sound
This was an invaluable lesson for me. Thanks SOS and Eric Valentine!
I've really enjoyed this series. I think I may have said it in a previous video of this series, but Eric seems like such a chill guy. I'd love to talk recording with the guy.
I love his approach to capturing the natural amp tone and room mics are so cool.
great stuff. thank you all who put this together.....
What a room you got there. Love watching this.
Most impressive, I always get new ideas from listening to Eric's albums and words.
Lack of Shrek in this video disturbed me
...is love....is life
well, that was legit. Thanks for openly sharing this dark art!
I've really enjoyed these videos.
Excellent stuff, what a great sound!
Great job guys, killer killer tones!
These videos are awesome! Very informative.
Great series - really inspirational and informative.
I love that sound. I wish I had the same setup!
This guy is on a completely different level
Beautiful sound!
That sounds beautiful
Epic surf sound.
Amazing video. Eric is a guru of sound.
Thanks man
Peace and love from Bristol, England
That's some great guitar tones
To flip the phase on that Magnatone, first thing I would have tried is just turning it backwards. Might not be a great solution, but it takes two seconds and might do the trick. Also he'd get less shocks if he wore shoes.
GREAT sound!
Love the series
Fantastic!
sounds great!
Say what you will about smash mouth- “walking on the sun’s” guitar tone is incredible.
Man, I would be in heaven if I had access to this gear
This kicks ass. I’d love to see you guys go visit him at his new place he’s building and do another series of videos!
That’s an intense sound!
I love to hear this insight and letting air mix the sound. Sound IS air moving so let it move I say.
Awesome 👏
amazing video. just like the other ones with Eric.
Crazzzzzzzy co0! Thank you so much! ❤
that was a great video! thanls
wow, awesome
Cool sound
Very informative...subbed
so good
I could listen to that tone alllll day. What an incredible sound!. I expected an abrasive sound but it was utterly luscious. Now replace those amps with Model Ts, Matamps and vintage Oranges and create a crushing doom/drone sound a la Sunn O))), Boris, etc.
Very cool
Such a genius.
this guy is awesome
"You'll never know how much I really love yooooooooou..."
Great video - as always!
Holy WoW!
Overkill!!!
Funking groovy
nice video
surf rider from solid fx its a good reverb pedal
Ladies and gentlemen: the sharpest tool i the shed!
When he runs all mics together it sound like The Afterneath from EQD
I would like more info on that reverb chamber material dimentions etc
Eric the human guitar amp!
yeh dude!
Cough *Smash Mouth* Cough
I wonder if they recorded the Dj turn tables there ....
ohhhhhh can you hear the harmonics .
As soon as I heard the first strum of that reverb chamber my draw dropped. Actually I said an expletive that I won't repeat here.
It feels like Eric has been around forever, and yet he looks like he's 30.
Can you also show us the best way to set up amp settings if all you got is a silver face Fender Twin and a Stratocaster?
It really depends on what you want to go for.
Great video! but I'm not 100% sure where exactly was the compressor in the sound chain
Between the mics and the speakers!
I’ve watched a lot of videos with valentine and he never wears socks. Does he go into the studio and take them off?
12:58 “you’ll never know how much I really love youuu, you’ll never know how much I really caaare”
Listen, do you want to know a secret?
Smash Mouth.... Lel
But tbh I *have* always loved the guitar sound on God of Wine. That's what really makes that track IMO.
..and I'm a big fan of recording amp arrays like that. Spent many many hours experimenting with that setup.
13:54 "dark again..."
17:21 rented from Norman's rare guitars
haha i love this guy
12:00..... Robin Guthrie [Cocteau Twins] is in the house !
:-)
Do you know the song?
@@tanveerhasan2382 yesss... CocteauTwins; 'PinkOrangeRed' > ua-cam.com/video/UmbszBl6cKs/v-deo.html
:-)
@@jeroenfigee beautiful, thanks
What is the song in the first 30 seconds of the video? That guitar tone is so nasty, its great.
Did you ever find out?
The Guitar is going from DI to AMP and DAW but how is it set up that the DAW output also gets into the Amps without switching cables ?
Many outputs that can be routed around the studio
Green Grooves He talks a little more about it in the Slash guitars video- assuming he's doing the same thing here, the DI signal actually hitting pro tools before being sent to the amp at all
😮
I believe that is a Mosrite Combo; not the Californian.
Paul van der Meijs
You're totally right It's definitely a Combo ! A Californian is a dobro style guitar.
Be carful with my goddam guitar @ 17:20
Dear Eric, great video, many thanks for it. But there is something missing in your setup, something essential for that "surf guitar sound": echo tape delay . Watkins Copycat, Echoplex, Binson Echorec, Roland Space Echo, etc.. Complete your setup with a tape delay and then make another video please. All the best for you!.
The EUROPA LUNA
GHOSTS
nice what's the first song at 0:00 ?
Long Goodbye by Bro: soundslikebro.bandcamp.com/
Thanks guys really awezome
what DI was he using? Looks like a rack unit?
had some help - this looks like the one - reverb.com/item/5768139-undertone-audio-mpdi-4-class-a-4-channel-mic-preamp-and-di
www.undertoneaudio.com/products/mpdi-4-rack-unit
For my ear I would hit the eq 50% less, Less refined, but more soul. Like what you are doing.. Nice you understand also what cables do or do not do. I find it hard to convince clients sometimes to upgrade
So when is he going to paint the walls?
Yeah it's a pretty ratty looking studio, I guess that's the vibe he's going for.
They sound good unpainted though
Correct. Painting will change the sound of the room.
Steve Albini's studio is unfinished too because he liked how it sounded at a certain point of construction
They should have added some of his Mic in for the guitar it sounds so squashed and the definitions gone. At 14:06 you hear it
I get the point... This is so Humm-Free, you can call it Bogart!
👍😉🇺🇸
What is a re-amp, and all this stuff you are discussing, out of phase, phase reverse, in phase, etc..I want to know how to set this up correctly to play some amps together, dont want to get shocked, or mess anything up, or get a shitty sound, of course.. Can you go into this more, the basics, for those that never did this set up yet?
This is kind of intended as a more advanced video. I know this was a while ago but I'd Google those terms around. But honestly to, this technique is kind of a million dollar studio technique where I bet it would be hard to get it to sound anywhere as good at home.
