eyedesyn, you´re the man! Love your tuts. Been on this C4D for a couple of months now, and the contrast with the monotone computer oriented people of classic 3d packages tuts it´s a breath of fresh air.
Amazing as always ! Quick note for everybody. I have found that the surface deformer is pretty slow when using high poly models. Tried using it with a 50,000 poly model from zbrush and it took ages. Keep those polys down. x
I like your tutorials. Not speaking or understanding english as I should (blame on me) I always understand what you mean, understand your thoughts :) Many thanks
Holy craaaaap!!! I never really knew how to use the constraint tag, always looked past it for some reason... NEVER AGAIN!!! This is a bloody game changer for me!!! Cheers Eyedesyn, your tutorials always help me up my game with my C4D animations and this one just gave me a whole sack full of new ideas to spend the weekend testing! You absolute legend.
Awesome!!! Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain all the different ways to do kinda the same thing!! I was particularly trying to do the last example without any result!!! Thanks a lot, I don't usually comment the videos but yours are very helpful!!!
Great tutorial. Can you suggest a method to gradually transition the object from one location in space to the constrained position on the object or the deformed position. Such as a weight for the lock postion.
Wanted to understand The various methods for this kind of thing for years - you nailed it! Thanks so much for your excellent tutorials. BTW - I started with C4D back in the pixelcorps; weren't you a member as well?
Hey Dave! Oh man! PIxelCorps! Yeah I was in that right when it started, my uncle did some of the animations for things like Twit Network and all that stuff that Alex Lindsay was in to! So good to hear from you! Thanks for watching!
Hey, love your vids-- they've taught me so much about C4D :D! Is there still a way to keep the object constrained if it isn't aligned to the axis and off to the side?
Thanks. This tutorial is awesome. Is there a way to use the Constraint tag with a Cloner? I am thinking how I can wrapped multiple instances of the flower to the skull without having to do it one by one I was trying to do it but it doesn't seem to be working when I applied the cloner.
Any update on how to do this in R21? Looks like the constraint options are different now (Constraint is now under Hair Tags, and it doesn't appear to have a Clamp option)
Hi Ej, thanks for sharing! I have a question. May I set the constraint over a selection? I mean, the target object as a selection set instead of a whole object? Thanks!
Hey EJ, I have a question that I'll try myself anyway, but maybe you've already tried it. How well would the constraint tag work with dynamics? I'm thinking something like the googly eyes.
You'd do the same kind of workflow because at the end of the day the Constraint Tag is clamping to a point on an objects surface. Unless you're talking about having the object WITH the constraint tag on it be dynamic. That wouldn't really work I dont think, you'd need to use Dynamic Connectors for that type of workflow.
Is there a way to use the surface deformer with multiple objects (cloner), creating one object, like floor tiles and to bend it to a surface? So far every cloned objects bends to the surface on top of all the others, instead of all of them bending as one object.
I'm relatively new to C4d and I'm wondering how you tapered the sweep nurb for the eyebrow on both ends?? I can only seem to get the end of the spline to taper, not the start:/ Any thoughts?
There's a Spline editor where the first point is the start, last point is the end, if you create a new point by CMD clicking on the spline in the spline editor you can create a new point and create a bell curve looking thing that will taper the start and end! Hope that helps!
Does anyone have the same problem as I do? I placed many cubes on the surface, it was nice when they were just done, but once I opened the file again, all the cubes are at the bottom of the surface, it happened for many times. Please help 😭😭
Tying to have motext go along a spherical loft object using the last method shown with the cross. The text keep squishing together in a weird way. any have other ideas /methods I could try to get this to work? I'm trying to make a raised lettering on a metal pot. thanks!
Took me a while to get to grips with the surface deformer but I got there, with a couple of caveats: for some reason the deformation does not show up in the interactive render region. And, no matter how much geometry I add, I cannot get the phong issues around the edges of the spline edge of the cross extrusion to go away, any ideas?
eyedesyn actually I found the issues with interactive render region not showing the deformed object would go away when I changed the layer order to have the deformed object above the object its being wrapped around.
Awesome tutorial bro ... but Surface deformer just not working on my stuff ... Double checked ur tutorial twice ... followed it step by step .. still no matter what i did just nothing happened .. pls reply me .. that thing's killing me
Thank you! But i have a problem, when I add lights and vray camera, at the moment of rendering all the pieces have moved, any solution? (i tryed to lock the constraint, and use protection tags but doesnt work) Thank you i hope someone can help me!
I use C4D because it's easy for an artist to use, intuitive, and doesn't get bogged down by an interface only a programmer could make sense of. You can always try beta's of either and see which you prefer but I feel C4D is THE easiest way to learn 3D. www.maxon.net/en-us/products/cinema-4d/overview/
You mean the Surface Deformer? This is probably due to the UV's not being laid out properly giving undesirable results. By using Bodypaint and using different UV relaxing methods should be helpful!
You just don't know how many months I was looking for a proper tutorial on this subject.
Still one of my fave tutorials
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
you are hands-down my favorite C4D teacher! thank you for sharing your wisdom!
Thanks so much - that means a ton! appreciate your support!

Thanks Bruno! Really appreciate the kind words and you watching my videos!
This lesson was SO helpful and exactly what I needed! Thank you!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
2018 and c4d still doesn't have a object painting tool like Maya has for the past 10 years.
Thank you for this tutorial. It saves a lot of time.
A lot of features that would make each software better if each had the others strengths! :) Thanks for watching!
OMFG what a neverending learning curve… thanks so much for taking the time of teaching us this amazing stuffs!!
Really well-structured lesson! Appreciate the prep, very nice, thank you.

My man!
Thanks for the video 👍
No problem 👍
Amazing as always ! Quick note for everybody. I have found that the surface deformer is pretty slow when using high poly models. Tried using it with a 50,000 poly model from zbrush and it took ages. Keep those polys down. x
Yeah that'll definitely bog it down! I like to keep things light and use Subdivision Surfaces.
I like your tutorials. Not speaking or understanding english as I should (blame on me) I always understand what you mean, understand your thoughts :) Many thanks
Im sure you're better at English than many Americans! ;) Glad you're finding the tutorials enjoyable!
Holy craaaaap!!! I never really knew how to use the constraint tag, always looked past it for some reason... NEVER AGAIN!!! This is a bloody game changer for me!!!

Thanks EJ, very helpful tutorial I like your tutorials they are so easy and sharp to the point.
thanks agian
Thanks again, Ahmed! Appreciate the kind words!
thank you eyedesyn!:) I have a one question, Surface deformer doesn't work in subdivision surface object?
been trying to figure this out for ages, thank you
Glad this was helpful!
Fantastic Tut. Looked for this solution for longer than I'd prefer to admit. ;-)
thank you!
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Awesome!!! Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain all the different ways to do kinda the same thing!! I was particularly trying to do the last example without any result!!! Thanks a lot, I don't usually comment the videos but yours are very helpful!!!
Thanks for the kind comment, Rodrigo! Appreciate you watching!
Great tutorial. Can you suggest a method to gradually transition the object from one location in space to the constrained position on the object or the deformed position. Such as a weight for the lock postion.
Asked too soon, I just found your tutorial with throwing bombs. Exactly what i needed. Thanks
Awesome! Glad my other video helped!

Que bien te quedo, me gustaría ver el tutorial del proceso completo.
Gracias, saludos desde República Dominicana.
Muchos gracias!!!
Спасибо друже, только ты помог мне разобраться!!!! Успехов тебе!!!!
Wow! Wish there was a tool like that in Blender 2.8, is there?
Awesome Tutorial 👍👌😁
Thanks very much!
Sir totally inspired keep rocking
Thanks very much! Appreciate you watching!
i like it!! but how i do the skull? thanks :)
This is awesome
Hey, love your vids-- they've taught me so much about C4D :D! Is there still a way to keep the object constrained if it isn't aligned to the axis and off to the side?
Thanks! You can use the Maintain Original Position option and that should do the trick!
Great great tutorial, thanks a lot!
Thanks Angel! Glad you enjoed it!
Thanks. This tutorial is awesome. Is there a way to use the Constraint tag with a Cloner? I am thinking how I can wrapped multiple instances of the flower to the skull without having to do it one by one I was trying to do it but it doesn't seem to be working when I applied the cloner.
for that you could just clone to a surface and do it that way, using mograph selections to remove the flowers you dont need!
Any update on how to do this in R21? Looks like the constraint options are different now (Constraint is now under Hair Tags, and it doesn't appear to have a Clamp option)
rigging tags
Thank you! This was so useful :)
happy to hear it! thanks for watching!
Hi Ej, thanks for sharing! I have a question. May I set the constraint over a selection? I mean, the target object as a selection set instead of a whole object? Thanks!
Sure! You can create a Polygon Selection and just drag that polygon selection tag into the Target field on the Constraint!
Thanks Ej!
Cheers.
To.. helpful
Thnk u so much
Welcome 😊
Awesome tutorial as alwas... I don't get why you don't have more subscribers
Thanks very much! I only start posting to UA-cam months ago so I hope to get more subs!
Nice video! I like it
Thanks!
Why u didn't just copy the constraint tag to the heart and turn off "lock" ?
I like your tuts. Keep it up!
That's a good idea!
How would one use constraints on instanced objects?
Hey EJ, I have a question that I'll try myself anyway, but maybe you've already tried it. How well would the constraint tag work with dynamics? I'm thinking something like the googly eyes.
You'd do the same kind of workflow because at the end of the day the Constraint Tag is clamping to a point on an objects surface. cool man, thanks.

Try using a connect object, only then will a mesh deformr recognize multiple objects
gems
Great stuff. Q: does "LOCK" reduce any cpu use?
Thanks! Lock just locks the object to surface, I don't think it helps CPU in any way.
Mind blown!
Thanks for watching, Brian!
Thank you !!!
You bet!!!
love you man keep up :D
I love YOU MAN! :) Keep on watching!

May want to try using a Collision Deformer set to Inside (Stretch). Lots of good collision deformer tuts out there!
It's probably a bug, unfortunately
eyedesyn actually I found the issues with interactive render region not showing the deformed object would go away when I changed the layer order to have the deformed object above the object its being wrapped around.
i'm sweating for days on the UV mapping, it's not working for me on the surface deformer. arg.
Ugh yeah unfortunately the surface deformer is alllll depending on good UV mapping..and thats a whole can of worms! :0
hi, for some reason when i try to apply surface deformer on a mouth onto my shark object, but it doesnt work. is it because of the mesh problem?
It may be due to your UV’s not being properly setup, have you tried to UV unwrap it - even auto UVs may work!
Awesome tutorial bro ... but Surface deformer just not working on my stuff ... Double checked ur tutorial twice ... followed it step by step .. still no matter what i did just nothing happened .. pls reply me .. that thing's killing me
You didn't describe what was going on so I can't help you!

Cinema 4D Tutorial - Using Constraints & Deformers to Place and Deform Objects Along a Surface
Thank you! But i have a problem, when I add lights and vray camera, at the moment of rendering all the pieces have moved, any solution? (i tryed to lock the constraint, and use protection tags but doesnt work) Thank you i hope someone can help me!
Actually when i active the Vray bridge on the renderer moves everything
Never used VRay so I couldn't help you! Sorry!
Thank you!

Hola, Como creo la calavera?
thanks thanks thanks
Welcome welcome welcome! :)
Any idea why a deformer wouldn't work on a complex mesh? Swapping in a primitive for the mesh (editable or not) produces results, the mesh doesn't.
You mean the Surface Deformer? This is probably due to the UV's not being laid out properly giving undesirable results. By using Bodypaint and using different UV relaxing methods should be helpful!
