    Too funny. My family and I made the foot during our Christmas visit. I tried to get my grandson to do it ahead of time. I said, 'remember in grade school when you traced your hand and made turkeys....'. Well, it didn't work, so another wonderful family holiday memory.

    Great picks Barbara. Watching this in Nov 2021 and its times the patterns are timeless, I just love it. Doing Christmas gifts so its PERFECT. Your shawl in this is Brilliant, as usual. I just have to say to date I have made 4 one row scarfs. I so love that pattern. Doing a couple more this year too!!!! So many different types and sizes of yarns its quick easy warm and gorgeous using so many versions yarns held double, some with mohair and a light whisky version in Suri Alpaca and many I still envision as well. Thanks so much. I hope you have lovely holiday season with Covid hopefully wrapping up.

    I finished my first functional with no holes toe-up sock 30 min before the new year and then yesterday I finished my second one last night. I had never knit a sock before and the sock was the whole reason I taught myself to knit in the first place 6 years ago lol. It is just a basic sock that is an ankle sock with a short row heel. I am now wanting to make another pair of socks for my husband but instead of a short row heel, I want to try out the German short row heel. That way his heel is a bit more protected from his shoes while at work. I also want to do a ribbing right where the instep is to have a bit of a better support system for his foot. I have a pair of socks that have that ribbing that was made by doctor sholes ( sorry can't spell it) and I love those socks they actually massage my instep with every move of my foot. I have really super high arches that are falling now due to my age. But they aren't falling as fast as others who have super high arches that wore heels a lot while young. Because I did not wear high heels a lot while I was young. I am short and have always worn pumps or flats lol. But my husband has flat feet. So his arches hurt him a lot because he is always on his feet at work. But before I can do that I am working on a cardigan that I am designing with Sport weight yarn.

    I'm partially deaf so I just love that you are so clear and concise. Love this idea of one skein projects as I dye yarn and I want to pass along what can be done with only one skein. Also, your hair pulled up and back like you have it is great, I tend to be distracted by loose hair flip flopping around. You are such a great teacher.

    I have a family foot file!! I have traced their feet onto thick cardboard and cut them out. This way I have something sturdy to put in the sock when I knit them top down to ensure the decreasing for toe is a right place etc. This has worked very well over the years and I surprise them with socks throughout the year.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit

    Oh! I've done garter in the round without purling. You do a wrap and turn at the end of each knit row, turn the work, and knit the other way, wrap and turn at the end (knitting the prior wrapped stitch), and knit back, etc. I learned here on You Tube, of course. :) No seaming required as it's still in the round, but it does leave a mock-seam ridge that's not too noticeable. I used it for sleeves on a cardigan and the "seam" was along the inner arm and not very noticeable.

    Hello Barbara, I had just bought one skein of wool that was 250 meters long and was wondering what I could make with it. I was so inspired about the Syzygy cowl that I got the pattern and have started knitting it already and it needs 240m!. It´s very easy and looks really good. Like Valerie C mentioned below, you do a wrap and turn (W&T), at the end of each row, just like doing short rows. The nice thing about this is that you don´t get the curl up at the beginning and at the end of the cowl. Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions you make, I really love your videos.

    Hi, Barbara! I love your Fave 5 videos, because it introduces me to new designers and it’s inspirational. I love the Swatch Labs. I learn a lot. It would be interesting to see you do some easily accessible yarns and compare, for example Malabrigo Worsted (single ply), Rios (plied Superwash), Twist (plied nonSuperwash), etc. I also like your tutorials and pattern tours. Thanks!

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  6 років тому

      Thank you for the suggestions Marjorie, I really like the idea of comparing different yarns within brands. I shy away from comparing yarns from different companies because I don't want to imply that one is better than the other - but explaining the differences within a yarn range sounds very cool. And I love Malabrigo (I actually work for them). What other yarns would you consider "easily accessible"?

    How do you weigh yarn? The shawl has a certain drama in graphics, color and points. Very nice.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  4 роки тому +1

      I use a small scale I purchased. It is best to have one that measures in grams and to at least 2 decimal points. They are sometimes called jeweler's scales.

    • @BeautifulOaks
      @BeautifulOaks 4 роки тому

      I am sometimes puzzled how to gauge how much yarn to use when the pattern says to use so many grams of a certain yarn but I only have a yarn of similar weight but towards the middle of a project it’s obvious I don’t have enough length. So, I chalk it up to live, learn, and find a different pattern for the yarn.

    Hi I like your Irulan Shawl. I'm hoping to make it but I personally like it a little longer and wider. Does the pattern show how I can do that? Or would you be able to tell me how? I wouldn't mind using two skeins of yarn.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  6 років тому

      I'm afraid that Irulan does not lend itself towards being made bigger because of the way the lace progresses. You could make it bigger by knitting it in a larger yarn with bigger needles, but I have no idea how much you would need.

  • @marychristoforo2256
    @marychristoforo2256 6 років тому

    Great video!
    I was looking through my stash yesterday, wondering what do do with several single skeins of worsted. Those slippers are the perfect answer. Don’t know if I’ll be starting a “family foot file” tho. Lol.
    And just because I can’t help myself: “apice” (ah peach ay) in Italian can mean peak, or point or summit or height. So it could refer to the shawl’s shape, or could refer to the height of success. I’ve heard “syzygy” (siz ah gee) used when they talk about planets aligned, like in an eclipse.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  6 років тому

  • @sheonaghgall5010

    I though that the idea of knitting in the round meant that one only needs to knit one type of stitch around and around and around.
    If you use the knit stitch you would get stockinette with garter wrong side. If you purl you would get knit on the right side and stockinette and the wrong side No?

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit

    Happy New Year! Love your choices... But .. I have to say that your shawl is so delicate and pretty...
    Can you explain to me why people wear fingerless gloves? I wear gloves to keep my fingers warm.. It seems to me, that fingerless gloves defeat that purpose!

      just a way to keep most of your hand warm when you need your fingers for detail work...they do not replace gloves, they are just an addition to your tool box.... I just take my glove off, do what I want and put it back, but I don't have to work where it's cold....

      I know a lot of people who wear fingerless gloves in their offices because they are cold, but they need to be able to use their fingers for typing and other work type stuff. I wear fingerless gloves almost exclusively because where I live gets cold enough to want your hands covered but full gloves or mittens are just too hot. In colder areas they are more of a transitional season accessory. Also, people hate knitting all of the individual fingers LOL.

      I run very warm so they are perfect for me but my friends who need mittens use them over top a pair of mitts or gloves to add extra warmth. They are a nice fall warm too when it's not quite cold enough for mitts plus if you get cold at your keyboard, they are handy for that too. xx from Canada

      Personally I wear fingerless gloves as an accessory more then to keep me warm. Also it is very nice for when it is fall/mid spring. Youd be surprised how warm your fingers can stay if your wrists and palms are warm. Wont replace full gloves in snow but I'm in Florida. I'm lucky if it's cold enough to even have the fingerless gloves

      Yes, but is the daughter of the Emperor called a princess or is that only for the daughter of Kings? It really isn't important, it just occurred to me that it might be different lol.
