If you want patterns for a special skein of sock yarn, especially a hand-dyed one, I HIGHLY recommend Sybil R's patterns. She's done mitts, socks, scarves/shawls, and more, but my favourites are her mitts. The construction is unusual but interesting, and great for breaking up colour pooling. She's probably my favourite designer.
I would add Reyna Shawl which I’ve knit about 3 times, easily adjusted to use a full skein of yarn, then the famous Musselburgh Hat also designed to use a full skein of fingering weight. Thanks for taking the time to put this compilation together.
I heartily agree! I have made it over 5 times and love to wear them! In cold weather, i wear the center in the front to cover my throat under a coat; i also like it for chilly situations to prevent a cold back of neck e.g. restaurants.
Always impressed with UA-cam for showing me relevant videos - like this one the day after I started a pattern hunt for a single skein of fingering yarn that I got from Maryland Sheep and Wool.
The Spindrift Shawl is a nice pattern - very well-written with row-by-row stitch count. Excellent for a first shawl. Easy to make, great looking, and easy to style.
I have made this shawlette with fingering weight yarn plus mohair. Really looks woven and extremely warm with the mohair. I am planning on knitting again without the mohair.
The Venezia Shawl is my favorite, i just knit the Mara in dk yarn (100g with 200m) with less increases, she is 150cm long and 25cm deep. Thank you Amber for bringing this together i must go now to ravelry to your list. I Love your Videos 🎉
Talk about perfect timing!! I picked up two skeins of absolutely gorgeous cashmere/silk blend yarn, each around 220 yards to make something special for my younger sister. After I bought it I realized I had no idea at all what I'm going to make for her and since the two skeins were well over $100 I was starting to feel stupid for buying it without any idea what I was going to do with it.. I just thought of her immediately when I saw the yarn, the colorway just screams her name and I want to make something she will love. I now have several great suggestions, as there are many of the projects you listed that I think she would like very much, and would be perfect for this yarn. I would love to get the Sand Island Cowl pattern, that is an especially nice looking cowl. Thank you so much for this episode, I am now ready to cake the skeins up so I can start one of these projects.
I so enjoyed this episode, thank you. Like many other knitters, I too, collect souvenir yarn. If chosen as recipient of your give away I would chose joji's Venezia shawl. What an intriguing shape! Thanks again.
Another shawl pattern that is great for gifting is the Changing Staircases Shawl. The stitch pattern is easy to remember, a relaxing knit. It looks great with tonal and variegated yarns. I've made this shawl six times. I'm sure I'll make it again.
Lots of great ideas and a number of them are generously free. I'd love to make the Capistrano Shawl... and probably the Larch if I can find the right yarn in my stash, or it could be a scrappy project. Thanks for all the ideas!
00:00 to 03:10 This was a great introduction! Right pace, clear diction, logical and clear setting out of what is to follow. Very few YTers do their intros this well. Thankyou!... now I'll go and watch the rest of it 👍 --------------------------- Watched it all through. *love* the Moth Mitts because that pattern is so original. Again, your delivery throughout is so clear and well paced. I'm subscribing! 👍👍
Thank you Amber for showcasing all the tempting choices! I like the simplicity of the #3 Woven look shawl. Also it's been awhile since I've knit anything, but I would like to learn a new stitch! Peace and Blessings to you 🧶🌻
Amber, thanks so much for all the terrific ideas. I love the Early Spring Bud cowl. The reason being is that it is smaller at the top and a little bigger at the bottom, that way it keeps my neck warmer. I don’t often find cowls shaped like this. Hope you’re feeling better, you look good! Thanks again.
😅Thanks for this huge work... it really helps me. After knitting many sweaters, I am inclined to knit small projects. I will travel to Ireland with my son this summer and plan to buy yarn of course. I will borrow your idea to knit a one-skein project as you suggested... it is a great souvenir idea! The Birds and chips cowl is one of my favourite. Yours is gorgeous! This podcast is building up a really fun summer knitting season! Thank you so much for all the suggestions. -Guylaine
My life is a tad hectic so I tucked this video away for later. Three months in and I am just getting back to it. So glad I did as I found two two hat latterns that are exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks!
Thank you Amber. I needed this vlog as I have a beautiful skein of kettle dyed wool silk mix from the Lancaster Yarn Shop, Intercourse PA. My daughter bought it back for me last year after visiting her friends in PA. We reside in New Zealand. I like the "Woven" and the "Artists Garden" Shawl
What a wonderful compilation of some of the best patterns that I think I can handle somewhat, albeit with some frogging or brain fogging! Love them & will attempt. Thank you. 💖🌺🌹
I'm a novice knitter but recently went to a local yarn store and loved all the beautiful hand dyed yarns but no idea what to make. This video has been so helpful! I'm going to look back and find a beginner pattern to try 😁
Thank you this list. I have a skein of 2 different colors I bought on sale at Purl Soho during the pandemic and years later, couldn’t figure out what to knit with them. The Pembroke shawl pattern would be perfect. 😊
I agree; the Spindrift is very special. New knitter here, so happy to see how many things I can make with one souvenir skein, of which I already have several!
Wow! Great job Amber! Thank you for doing all that research! It’s so hard to pick one that I would like to make, I LOVE them all. I think I will start with the Spindrift Shawl pattern. Im sure I will be going back to this bundle many times! Great for gifts too! Thank you again.
Thanks for such a great video, this is just the sort of thing I was looking for as I have over 10 individual balls of yarn from my favourite dyer and no idea what to do with them all. They are such beautiful summery colours so I would like to knit the Snowflake Party Shawl with them. I will also be heading over to watch all of your videos as all my usual podcasts are up to date....so hello and thank you 🙂
Love the collection you’ve shared for single skein projects. As a beginner knitter, these inspire me to challenge myself to go to the “next level.” Thank you! ❤
Thank you Amber for making this list! I'm sure I'll refer to it several times as I also like to pick up special souvenir skeins when I travel. I think the pattern I am most interested in is the Venezia Shawl. Thank you! -Tricia
This is the first time I have watched your channel. I’m super impressed by the patterns you chose. Usually in these kinds of podcasts, the patterns chosen are ones. I would never know, I would probably make most of the ones you shared. If you choose me, I would choose the. Venezia shawl. And thank you for putting that bundle together. That is amazing.
What a great round-up! I saw a few that I already saved in my favorites. I especially want to knit the Woven Shawl by Casapinka because I really love linen stitch! Thanks Amber - I know this probably took a fair bit of time to put together!
I love when you do this videos. I truly appreciate it. I have the hardest time navigating ravelry. I love the snowflake party. I to see flowers not snowflakes. It so kind of you to give a pattern away. Take care and knit happily
I am so happy that I have found this video! I have so many hanks of fingering weight yarn that I have no clue what to do with them except make socks. I won them in an amazing giveaway. I know I can use 2 at a time for a thicker weight but I’d like to explore this video to see my options. I can’t watch the video now as work calls but I’ve got it all set to go when I return home. I subscribed already because I’m sure it will be good! I’ll comment again after I watch it. 😊
Hi, thanks for the recommendations. The single skein pattern I would like to win is Early Spring Bud cowl. I highly recommend the Venezia shawl. I made as a gift for my MIL. It is lovely to knit and very wearable. ❤Terry, near Kamloops BC Canada 🇨🇦
I would love to try the Spindrift shawl. I have never made a crescent shaped shawl and would love to try it. I am starting the Arlequin Shawl which is a free pattern on Ravelry. Thank you so much for the wonderful video Amber ❤❤❤❤
What a great list! I especially love the Venezia shawl you mention. Another great one skein shawl is the Reyna, a free pattern. I've knit so many of them, and they're beautiful! Perfect for variegated yarn.
What a wonderful episode. I love the ideas for using up these special single skeins. The birds and ships cowl is top of my list although there are so many beautiful projects to choose from. Thank you.
What a great list of patterns. I have quiet the collection of souvenir yarns in boxes under the bed. I love the look of the Vanezia Shawl with its lace on both edges.
Wow so many beautiful projects to make!! I would have to say a long story shot would be my fave paid for pattern however there are so many beautiful free patterns that I feel like we all have won already! Thank you Amber for the chance to win one of these fabulous paid for pattern!
Thank you for much for making the bundle grouping of patterns. As I'm watching this in the morning prior to work it made it simple for me to save and look at later
Thxs for this video. I'm going on a yarn crawl in a few weeks and ill probably be buying a skein from each of the 6 shops. (I know i dont have to but i know myself). So now i know what i can do with them.
Thank you for sharing all these lovely paterns. I have a lot of big shawls but I would love to make a cowl. The birds and ships stands high on my list.
Thank you Amber! This podcast idea hit it out of the ballpark for me. I have SO many one skein finger weight yarns that, as you said, you really don’t won’t to knit just socks out of them to not be seen as they so deserve to be. I thank you for doing all of the detective work on this for us! I downloaded your bundle and will go directly to it because I really loved all the patterns so much! I especially like the winglet mitts, as I have it in my favorites already. Happy knitting and thank you once more for this helpful podcast…🙂🧶
Thank you for sharing these one skein project ideas and explaining what drew you to them. I like the Birds and Ships cowl based on your lovely version.
I thank you for all the suggestions showing projects using fingerling yarn. I have a number of skeins that were originally intended for socks. I especially liked all of the cowl patterns.
Thank you for taking the time to research these options!! I was so intrigued by the Woven pattern. I have some very special yarn that would work up nicely in this.
Hi Amber, Thank you for this episode. I’ve recently purchased some indie yarn and have been searching for the right pattern. I’m tempted by the Woven shawl by Casapinka.
I too purchase souvenir yarn. My husband is so great about finding and going to lys. I knit socks like crazy, but I have alot, ok a hoarder amount of finger weight but there a skeins too soft for socks. Many great pattern suggestions and love the garter stitch with a lace edge.😊
Thanks for the wonderful Ravelry Bundle! I appreciated your complete and methodical explanation of the patterns. Very organized! So many great free patterns. I love the simplicity of the Early Spring Bud Cowl.
Thank you Amber for all the work and care you put into this episode, along with all your episodes. Not commenting to receive a pattern, just wanted to thank you
I am going to knit Woven a Chantelle. I love one skein shawls and scarfs. I find I wear them almost everyday in the winter at work. Emily Clausen has the Mill Hollow scarf out. I like Cubetcha by Casa Pinka. You can use any yarn with that. I also like my Willow cowl by Amelia Lyon. Thank you for this episode. I have some new options. Enjoy your day 😊 Kim
I like so many of the patterns you featured, which is good because I have so many single skeins! Artichoke Hat, Cloudburst Mitts, Belle Cowl, Glider Shawl, Souvenir Shawl, Woven...Thanks for putting this together!
What a wonderful podcast- directly to the point and so informative. Thank you for saying what you really like about these patterns. I would love to make the woven shawl. I’ve never done the linen stitch but it’s so pretty! 💕
Thank you for highlighting these beautiful single skein patterns! I love buying souvenir yarns so this video was so helpful. I have long admired your Birds and Ships cowl whenever you have worn it in your videos!
I love the sand island cowl, it looks very cozy and could be for men or women which is nice. I also like the artichoke hat. This is such a great information for summer knitting, travel knitting and who doesn’t have single skeins begging for attention in their stash!??? ❤
Great ideas, thank you! I'm retired and really into shawls lately, but definitely going to checkout some of the others. Thanks for pulling together the free and low cost patterns.
I’m so happy to have happened upon your video I am liking and subscribing and looking forward to all your future offerings. Thank you for sharing your talents and knowledge.🙏
Not much of a shawl knitter but the Spin Drift crescent shaped shawl by Helen Stewart really caught my eye. I would like to knit it with one of my souvenir yarns. Thanks for another inspirational podcast.
Hello Amber! My name is Analía, I'm from Argentina and I love your podcasts ❤. I like all the patterns, but the Belle cowl is beatiful! Thank you for everything you share with us. I send you a big hug!
I love these types of episodes, thank you for all your time and effort in researching this episode. My favourite is the Birds and Sips cowl, beautiful ❤
These videos are my favorite. Thanks for the time you put in to research and bring us this information. I love the Spindrift Shawl by Helen Stewart. The crescent shape is my favorite. Have a blessed day!
I am so excited to have happened upon your channel. I just returned from Amsterdam two weeks ago and bought just 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn from Stephen and Penelope with no idea what to knit. But it would be special and remind me of my trip. I loved your idea choices. I would consider the Venezia shawl and the souvenir shawl. Thank you for the research for one skein patterns.
Thanks for doing all the research for these types of videos. I think my favourite was the birds and ship cowl. I find cowls keep me warmer and the bandana style work the best with a winter coat
My favorite single skein, fingering project so far is the Heart Warmer Cowl by Justyna Lorkowska. It’s so fun to knit and absolutely beautiful. I wear it almost every day when it’s chilly, but not cold, and I get countless compliments on it! Anyway - I would really love to knit up those Winglet Mitts… So pretty! ♥️
Thank you! Love them all. I have a skein perfect for the casapinka woven shawl. I’ve made a few of the others - good choices. The joji locatelli Shawl is so wearable.
Thank you SO much. Many creators offer pattern suggestions such as this but you add that extra special commentary that I appreciate so much. Thanks for taking the time to do all the background work in order to provide this thorough list 😊
Another very appreciated episode., thank you! I am rather tiny and looking for one skein tops (just made a ranunculus, held with mohair, out of one skein). I spend far too many hours hunting for patterns.😜 My pattern choice from your brilliant hours on Ravelry are the Winglet mitts (I have knit 3 pairs of fingerless mitts that were too big for me, but others were very happy) and the asparagus hat - love the lace motif. Thank you for your research.
The winglet mitt pattern is perfect for that one fingering skein I bought years ago with no plan for 😅 Glad I'm not the only one who does this, thanks for the video!
You have chosen so many beautiful patterns. I love the Birds and Ships pattern especially the shape which is something very different from my other cowls. Thank you for this inspiring podcast.
Loved this list Amber! Many of them I had NEVER seen before and have promptly added to my favourites. I knit a Birds & Ships cowl after seeing yours on a previous episode and it became an impromptu KAL during a girls getaway after everyone saw mine. SUCH a great accessory. Thanks for all the work you do!
I found many I liked, but I think I’d knit the Sand Island Cowl. Just lovely for some special yarn I’ve hoarded for several years! Thanks for going to all the effort to compile such a nice collection. 😊
lovely selection of patterns, which just came up while I was watching utube. and because I am always on the lookout for fingering patterns inspiration. I have knitted the Barley hat by Tin Can knits, love it. The pattern would like to knit is the Artichoke hat its so beautiful. And look forward to more inspiration
Thanks for the ideas!! I've been on a crochet kick lately and if I were to win I would like the Stitch Meditation Shawl by CJ Brady. Thanks again for such an enjoyable watch! ❤️🙂❤️
Thanks for putting this one skein project list together - just what I was looking for my summer knitting! Really like the Birds and and Ships pattern - yours looks great!
I would add Reyna Shawl which I’ve knit about 3 times, easily adjusted to use a full skein of yarn, then the famous Musselburgh Hat also designed to use a full skein of fingering weight. Thanks for taking the time to put this compilation together.
I have that shawl pattern also. I has been in my queue for quite a while
I’ve knit the Reyna twice and I absolutely love it!
I love that one too, I wear mine every day in the spring and fall❤
I heartily agree! I have made it over 5 times and love to wear them! In cold weather, i wear the center in the front to cover my throat under a coat; i also like it for chilly situations to prevent a cold back of neck e.g. restaurants.
I like Reyna too!
I have SO many souvenir skeins of yarn and this video is a great way to help me figure out what to make with it! Thanks so much for compiling!
Thanks for pulling all the lovely patterns together. I have MANY fingering weight specialty skeins. I love the "Wendy's fern shawl". So pretty.
Thank you for this video. I bought one skein of three different Christmas skeins and the recommended pattern uses two skeins!
Always impressed with UA-cam for showing me relevant videos - like this one the day after I started a pattern hunt for a single skein of fingering yarn that I got from Maryland Sheep and Wool.
That's awesome!
The Spindrift Shawl is a nice pattern - very well-written with row-by-row stitch count. Excellent for a first shawl. Easy to make, great looking, and easy to style.
I like the simplicity of Casapinka’s Woven shawlette to show off a cracking variegated yarn. Thanks for these ideas!
I have made this shawlette with fingering weight yarn plus mohair. Really looks woven and extremely warm with the mohair. I am planning on knitting again without the mohair.
@@marciagardner9892 That’s so good to hear! Thanks
Great episode! Love the snowflake . I’m a big fan of Marina Behm
The Venezia Shawl is my favorite, i just knit the Mara in dk yarn (100g with 200m) with less increases, she is 150cm long and 25cm deep. Thank you Amber for bringing this together i must go now to ravelry to your list. I Love your Videos 🎉
I come back to this video sooooo au times!! I truly love all of the items you picked!!!
And it’s free
My daughter and I both started the Mara shawl after watching your video - thanks so much for this video. And the comments here are very helpful too ❤

Watched it all through. *love* the Moth Mitts because that pattern is so original.
Again, your delivery throughout is so clear and well paced. I'm subscribing! 👍👍
You are so kind. Thank you for your encouragement!
Thank you for sharing! I like to use the one-of-a-kind yarns as a contrasting colour in stranded colourwork. Sometimes it can look like stained glass.
Thank you Amber for showcasing all the tempting choices! I like the simplicity of the #3 Woven look shawl. Also it's been awhile since I've knit anything, but I would like to learn a new stitch! Peace and Blessings to you 🧶🌻
I have made the cloudburst mitts and made three pairs out of one skein. They will be Christmas presents this year. They are easy and fun to make.
Amber, thanks so much for all the terrific ideas. I love the Early Spring Bud cowl. The lace bordered shawl is beautiful and the one that appealed most to me. Thanks for sharing.

This was so helpful. I haven’t learned socks yet but have so many beautiful skeins ready to go. Going to use one for the Woven shawl by Casapinka.
What lovely one skein projects! My favorite was the Souvenir shawl.
What a wonderful podcast- directly to the point and so informative. Thank you for saying what you really like about these patterns. I would love to make the woven shawl. I’ve never done the linen stitch but it’s so pretty! 💕
Love the birds and ship cowl. Have the perfect skein for it that I bought when I visited my son in Christchurch last year.
Cloudburst fingerless gloves is definitely one of my go-tos; have made at least 5 pair with that pattern. Quick and easy, and they look great.
The spindrift shawl by Helen Stewart is beautiful and it would be something that I would wear! Loved the podcast and all the inspiration!
That bandana cowl with the tassel is definitely on my new list! Great bundle of ideas!
The joji locatelli
Shawl is so wearable.
Thank you for a lovely podcast, I think the "Woven" pattern by Casapinka is very beautiful.
My favorite is the Birds and Ships cowl, that lace panel is really striking and I love the tassel!
