- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable introduces a character unlike any other in the series, Kira Yoshikage. Kira Yoshikage is a simple man who wants one simple thing, to live a quiet life, but does he really? As we watch how his character evolves through his fights with Jotaro Kujo and Josuke Higashikata, as well as his transformation into Kosaku Kawajiri; does he still really just want to live a quiet life?

Kira and Diavalo are two sides of the same coin . Everyone knew Kira as a person , they saw him in public and at work everyday but they didn't know about the terrible actions he did . But nobody knew who Diavolo was but everyone in Italy knew and felt the effects of his actions

I think that Kira does want a quiet life, but wants HIS VERSION of a quiet life. To him, his murders are part of that life, unnoticed and private, but deeply important to him. He probably kept the hands because he didn't think that he could get caught. He had gotten away with taking countless hands, possibly for years, and didn't leave any evidence behind. Additionally, he was a Stand User who didn't know about other Stand Users, meaning that as far as he knew, he had a power that only he could ever use, and that nobody else could ever stop or even discover. He saw himself as a sort of god, one who would quietly continue their reign, invisible to everyone else, but still secure in their superiority

Yoshihiro directly told him to leave town and start over somewhere new, murder someplace else, make the trail grow cold. But Kira was so determined to have it all, to fulfill his monstrous greed for sexual pleasure through murder while also enjoying the quiet life he built for himself in Morio. This proved to be his undoing, his two desires completely at odds with each other.
I hear Derry, Maine, is a nice little place to live. He'd fit right in.
Kira didn't really lie, it's just that his ideal life and his nature contridicts. Even Kira understands this himself.
Humans are hypocrites and conflicting by nature. That's because of a blend of our rationale and our emotions.
Kira actually wanted a quiet life, but his most carnal desires prevented this because they pushed him to be a serial killer. Think of it as taking breaks in your job even if it you actually enjoy working.
He figured he could simply have both: he would live as a regular, law-abiding citizen while using his stand to satisfy his desires without anyone being any the wiser.
And, for a while, it worked. He managed to live his ideal lifestyle for a good 15 years before the cat was out of the bag.
Correct. It wasn't so much Kira lying as it was Kira's desires running contrary to his wishes - a thing he very much acknowledging it, but unwilling to do anything about it, seeing the fulfillment of his desires as more important. He thought that, somehow, he could make it work, when it just can't.

@@DraculaCronqvist That being said, how often, how long, and how *insistently* Kira’s been prioritizing his desires over his wishes, says a lot about him.
Both at the end and time and time again prior, his desires won over his wishes. Instead of trying to work though those issues via therapy, reaching out, introspection, or even just allowing himself to feel empathy, or recognizing that having such a lack of it, that they can commit such atrocities with no discomfort is a huge problem, that he’d be better off leaving any plans to kill behind him.
If Kira truly believed that he wanted to live a quiet life. Then he’s been lying to himself.
He just wanted to live his brutal life, without the consequences, without paying for any of it.

I think what Kira meant with a "quite life" was one where he could go to work, follow his routine, kill whenever he wanted, and not face any consequences for it. His vision of a quiet life was distorted. As Kosaku, he was living a normal life for us, but not for him, there was a missing part, though by having a wife and a kid, he also gained something he didn't had before. It is weird, but in real life, there are serial killers who have loved ones.

well, the way i see it is that the reason he kills people is because he really does want a relationship with another person, but being an OCD psychopath he can't allow someone with the free will to interrupt his methodical schedule into his life, so he just takes his favourite part of them (the hand) and roleplays about having a relationship as he pleases.
That’s a great point. He’s clearly misogynistic as all hell and expresses that he likes women best when they don’t talk. So he objectifies the part about them he likes most (the hand) and just…gets rid of the rest, yet still acts like they’re dating, like you said. The tragedy of the character is that he can't control his urges to murder women. This isn't something like, resisting the urge to eat a donut, his mind actively pushes him to murder all the time, never letting up, never giving him a break, that is, until he murders, allowing him to feel some form of relief for a time and even dating the hands he takes so as to savor the experience and not have to murder as often. Now of course, he COULD seek help for this behavior but that would require going to therapists, taking medication, letting others know of his urges and he just can't have that, all of those things would make him lose sleep at night and his sociopathic nature makes it so he doesn't care enough about others to see his wants as beneath theirs. If Kira could remove his psychopathic fetish for hands and murder, he would but he can't. His character is somewhat based on the movie "M", a story about a child murderer where the audience actually has to deal with the fact that it's not his fault he's a murderer. Fate made Kira the way he is, as such, he decides to "think positively" about it. His way of thinking positively about it is by targeting women with "ugly hearts", thereby dating them will cleanse them and make them better, thus his murdering, in his mind, is actually doing some good. Though it certainly helps that his narcissism makes it enjoyable to him to dominate those who have a sense of superiority.
Kira is his own worst enemy and he's aware of this. He feels however, that so long as he takes enough precaution and thinks things through clearly, no matter what situation his murderous tendencies put him in, he can find a way out of them. There's only so many times that can work though, especially when his own mind is working against itself.
I do think he was starting to feel for Shinobu because subconsciously he was starting to enjoy his new life and he even embraces it a bit when he unlocks Bite the Dust, kissing Shinobu on the cheek and being incredibly calm, confident and content. Kira never cared for anyone because he never felt the urge to do so but because he had to blend in as Kosaku Kawajiri, he was FORCED to get to know someone and it certainly helped that Shinobu seemed to be utter infatuated with his "dangerous side"(I have to wonder if Shinobu would have been perfectly fine with Kira murdering people if it meant she got to be with him). Of course, Kira will never be able to remove that part of himself that wants to kill, his mind will continue to torture him until he has his fix of murder, so even if Kira did start to feel for Shinobu, it doesn't satisfy his overwhelming urges.
This is my interpretation of the character anyway. He's my favorite JoJo character.
I do find it really interesting how Kira wants to be seen as superior to those around him, yet during the scene where the main cast investigates his house, there’s tons of environmental details like 3rd place trophies and modest academic achievements which indicate he strived to be average so as to go unnoticed.

Something I noticed is when kira has no interest in killing someone he doesn't tell them anything about himself but when he wants to kill someone like shigechi he begins explaining himself on a personal level because it wouldn't matter if he told someone when they were going to die. It's similar to what is said at 12:31

Anyone didn’t think that Cinderella stand has the side effect of a slow reverse of personality, as we have seen that Yukako started to lose their special beauty or magic effects by not following stand rules. Maybe his transformation was gone wrong in time and he started to fail as the original Kira.
Honestly, I had always assumed that he never really wanted an _entirely_ quiet life. I mean, how quiet of a life _could_ one live as a psycho-sexual serial killer? That and I always did have the feeling Araki *_very_** much* knew what he was doing when he somewhat set up the ship between Kira and Shinobu, the ever so slight voice in the back of the audiences head saying "Huh. Maybe he should get his quiet life after all." before abruptly being brought back to the reality of the story: Protagonists defeating a serial killer that was the single biggest evil in a list of egregious ones in the modern history of Morioh. In fact, the snap back was so abrupt that my brother and I (who were watching the anime together) actually felt genuinely upset that Kira was gone as much, or maybe even more, than that the part was simply over...
However, I will say though that I didn't see the pattern of Kira, Kosaku, Kira: Doomed, Successful, Doomed in it's linearity. But seeing how it was laid out and how many bits and pieces point out to this conclusion makes me _even _*_more_* appreciative of how intricate this story and it's characters were!

People take words too literally. And they project their own definitions rather than looking at how others define those same things differently.
Kira terms it as a 'quiet life', but from the examples he provides, what he actually wants is to avoid stress and anxiety. To someone with a compulsive disorder like Kira, disruptions to his daily ritual are a source of both. This is why he was freaking out before making his first kill after adopting the Kosaku identity.
When he says he wants to live a quiet life, he doesn't mean he wants a peaceful family life. What he means is he wants to live a life where he freely indulges his obsessive habits and occasionally kills women, without the stress or anxiety of worrying about someone investigating the murders.

If you put this into reality DIO may have just threw knives at the bystanders and made a dive towards Joseph stopped time,avoiding fall damage.
Part 7: SPONGES AND DINOSAURS

There's a bit of a problem with this theory, in dead man's question, we see what happens to Kira after he dies. It's effectively his own personal hell, and the whole thing about it is that he works as a hitman and can never rest. So why would it be hell to him if he never wanted a quiet life in the first place?
But he didn't know who he even was and his past life and what he actually wanted back then. I think it's more of a peaceful redemption until he almost got killed by the ghost bugs.

The idea is that it's a form of delusion or self-sabotage. Just like all serial killers want to be caught and their crimes publically acknowledged, Kira says he wants a quiet life, but his idea of the quiet life doesn't actually support that claim. Hence why he sabotages his actual quiet life as Kosaku and goes back to his old habits.
Because he wanted both a quiet life and a serial killer persona to play around with on the side. He wanted to be able to kill without effecting his main quiet life while he didn’t stand out.

This theory actually ties nicely to Dead Man's Questions as Kira no longer remembers who he is, thus not being able to enjoy his 'quiet life's any longer.
I feel like Kira’s creation was also probably inspired by Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. They both speak in manners that can be very exaggerated or very up front and bland. They describe their daily routines and their address the first time we meet them, and they’re all about the idea of fitting in. In Kira’s terms, calling it the “ Quiet Life “ he so desires about.

I never actually thought about the living the quiet life as Kosaku as a reason for why he shields Shinobu's eyes. I think it fits as at the very least, a fun ironic twist that he gets what he wants to the point of instinctively doing what one would do living one, but too concerned with everything else to realize it.
Well I'm kind of late but even his bites the dust is kind of ironic since he conisdered Jotaro's time manipulation to be a very powerful ability and he later got bites the dust.
Edit: I feel that more Kira screen time would have been better for the story and could have developed his personality and how he sees other stand users.

I think it goes even deeper. I think Kira legitimately believed that he wanted a quiet life. He lied to himself so much, made so many excuses for his actions, that he convinced himself of his own lie. The justification that he made for why he lived the way he did was that it was for "a quiet life", and he made this case not just to his victims, but to himself.
Why lie to himself about his motivations for his actions? If I had to make a guess, it would be because at some level deep down, he's disgusted by them. He knows that what he's doing is wrong, but this causes him to feel uneasy with himself, restless even. Guilty. Therefore, his actions need justifications. The ends need to justify the means. He convinces himself that his goal is maintaining the quiet life he already has, and justifies his actions as being in preservation of that lifestyle. Under this lense, he can convince himself that his actions are actually a form of self defense, and therefore morally justified. This allows him to sleep at night, "knowing" that he's done nothing wrong.
The obvious truth is that if he really wanted a quiet life, all he had to do to preserve that lifestyle was to do nothing special at all. Either as Kira or as Kosaku, all he had to do was stop killing people and he'd have lived the quiet life he claimed to have desired so much. His actions did not further his supposed ambitions, they put those ambitions on the line.
Why do the things he did then? I feel like it's probably because deep down, being a serial killer is what he really wanted. To kill, and kill again, and get away with it each time. If killing were legal and normalized, it would lose it's flair to him. He'd likely become severely depressed. There'd no longer be any risk to it, which would take away what he enjoys about it. He likes to dance with the taboo, flirt with the devil, take as much risk as possible and still come out on top. Somewhere deep down, the fact that what he's doing is wrong feels so right to him, and the fact he knows other people wouldn't approve gives him a thrill. He's better and smarter than any potential interlopers, and they will be dealt with effortlessly. That is what he fundamentally believes, even if he lies to himself about it. Every new kill further validates this in his mind subconsciously, giving him that rush. It appeals to his ego in a way that is addictive. He needs to prove to himself that he can do even worse, be even bigger and bolder, and still come out on top. To prove to himself that he's even more superior than he believed before.
With every kill, he becomes more bold and confident. As he grows more bold and confident, he goes a little bit further with every kill. This becomes a vicious cycle until he gets caught and is put to the test. For the longest time, anyone who caught him became just another victim. This contributed to the cycle. When he finally started to fail to kill those who found him out, that's when he began to psychologically crack. He never expected to ever meet his match, he was continually conditioning himself to view himself as superior to everyone else. Meeting his match threatened his ego, his very worldview. Only with the belief that he had managed to come out on top yet again was he able to return back to that rush he craved for and find peace of mind again.

These kinds of psychopaths or sociopaths are what they are because they're NOT disgusted by their actions and take pride in getting away with them. I find this video extremely interesting, with Kira being my favourite character I find it amazing that I can still find more to explore about him, which always makes me fall into the rabbit hole all over again. I believe that Kira truly thinks he wishes for a peaceful life, all the while not realising that it's an excuse for acting the way he does and feeling superior to others. The illusion of that objective gives him the feeling that he has it all figured out, he solved the problem of life by finding a solution that involves mostly himself, the only person he can truly put his trust in. What he doesn't fully realise is that he is after a sense of victory he can only gain from being recognised and aknowledged by others. I think being Kosaku and finding himself in a situation that reflected his "ideal" bothered him to no end, as it exposed the falsity of his previous declarations in his own mind, which is why he tried to prove to himself that the quiet life he was experiencing was not the one he was after for a specific reason, like him not fully being himself. That would have led him to act like his old self again, despite the troubles he knew he'd put himself through. It seems to me like he got a rush from it, too.
What I love about Kira is the way he denies himself to others. Like you said, he only really puts trust in himself. He believes the best way to live life is by avoiding all challenges and hardship, therefore he opens himself up to nobody so no one will hurt him or test him. But by doing this, he also is unable to comprehend the goodness in other people or forgive them for their faults. He builds his quiet life up as his own personal little world, and anyone who offends that peace by mistake irritates him greatly because he only thinks about people’s actions in regards to how they affect him, never thinking about the intricacies of their own lives.
The hand fetish and killing urges probably developed separately from this personality, but I like to think if he gave people a chance then it would help him get over his urges, because he’d stop being so self-centered. But he doesn’t. Even when he starts feeling for Shinobu, he tries to shut the feelings out, because he’s afraid of living any other way. And in the end that desperation to be alone destroys him.
I think I feel connected to this because I suffer from a lot of social anxiety. I’m nowhere near as reclusive as Kira (and I am aware that part of Kira’s lifestyle involves trying to ACT normal among other people, which means some social activity likely occurs with him), but I understand how it feels to want to avoid interacting with others and drawing attention to oneself, and I understand how that can hurt my own development and emotional state, as well as how it colors my perception of other people due to my decision to not know them better. To me, Kira feels like an extreme version of that…mixed in with someone who has the guts and audacity to kill in order to maintain their lifestyle at any cost of course.

Many people say that a man with a bomb stand who wants a quiet life is ironic. I think it suits him perfectly. Everyone knows about the bomb when it explodes. Until it does, it is silently waiting and only a few can hear it if they listen close enough. The Duwang gang was able to hear him, but the rest of Morioh couldn't. Also, Kira killed a lot of people and hurt more, which is the potential a bomb can do. Also, there are only a few people that can diffuse it (Stand users and Hyato)

Kira trully is a unique character as he clearly is either a sociopath or a psychopath and the author describes him as such with talent. Araki even manages to make us feel for him and his want for a "quiet life" when he shows the story from Kira's point of view, making us forget what kind of a person he really is until the perspective switches again and we snap back to reality. Great writing.
I think it would be really cool if there was an alternative story where Kira decides keep having a life with his "wife" and suppress his urges, atleast long enough to get the Joes off his tail. He could then move somewhere else with her but something tells me he won't wanna do that, but if he did and decided to be with her, that would be an interesting alternate story.

It is clear that Kira wants to live a quiet life DOING the things he loves and he can't stop doing because of his fetish and mentality. He wants HIS life to be quiet. In HIS life is crucial murdering people to keep their hands. Kosaku's life was quiet, yes, but not Kira's if he kept playing another person's life, of course he wants to be himself, not anyone else. It was inevitable that his personality would re-emerge.
While he was Kosaku his life was indeed quiet. But it wasn't his life, so he didn't like it, and the urge of being himself came back.
In conclusion, I'd say he wants to live a quiet life. But it has to be HIS life. Killing people is part of his life. I know, killing people and living a quiet life aren't compatible. But that is Kira's paradox. A struggle that he surpassed thanks to a stand that allowed him to not leave any trace. He kept the hands because of his fetish. He did want a quiet life DOING these kind of things.

I think people forget that the explosions are, in fact, completely quiet. Only those who have a Stand can see and hear these explosions. To everybody else, the explosions are both invisible and inaudible. This is why, for instance, when Kira killed Shigechi or the man and woman in the appartment, nobody heard anything. Even Hayato, who watched, just saw the man and woman disappear instantly, but saw no explosion. Kira's Stand power does not contradict his wish of a quiet life. Kira's wish of murdering women for their hands contradicts his desire for a quiet life.

(I’m like a 2 episodes away from finishing Part 4 but I’ve seen so many spoilers tbh)
I like to think Kira has the same sort of mindset as most serial killers. I took a Forensic Science class in high school and we did a project about them. Most serial killers have the same sort of personality traits: They seem relatively normal and try living as quietly as possible with little interaction with others. But I’m nature, they hold narcissistic personalities with some sort of superiority complex, and some often leave clues to the police and others about their crimes because they feel they feel a gratification of it (whether it be close calls, outsmarting the law and feeling their intellect is superior, or whatever). Many also tend to have some type of sexual frustration (Idk how else to call it) take it out on their victims. And since they feel above others, they think their way of living is absolute and others are just objects to be played with and torn apart for their satisfaction. I was watching Part 4 before taking the class, but looking back at Kira now and after watching this video, Kira is an example of a (nearly) standard serial killer.
He’s a narcissist that believes himself to be above others, he takes evidence of his crimes with him, he announces himself to his victims in order to draw attention/recognition to himself, sexual frustration (hand fetish), a routine for how he goes about doing things (just remembered many serial killers will have a specific way of killing their victims), and his definition of a “quiet life” is completely warped and twisted from the average persons’, but he still feels that what he wants is just.
Basically I just realized that Kira checks off a lot of things on my project’s summarization of common characteristics found in serial killers after I forgot to finish Part 4.
