- Does Cold Steel Knives instantly impart a mental vision of outlandish, over-the-top, "fantasy" types of designs? I used to. Sure they make a great Tanto that has four decades proven that fact with countless soldiers taking them on deployment. But, as for a pocket knife, I never even considered carrying one until I watched a video by Zach Fowler on his UA-cam channel. / fowlersmakeryandmischief I saw this orange knife in his pocket and wondered what it was. He then took it out and proceeded to use it to make feather sticks and hand batoness it through sticks and I was instantly impressed by the knife. So I went to his Affiliated Amazon store and bought a couple. Glad I did. Very pleased.
This is a very traditional knife in the fact that it is a lock back (actually a mid-lock) and is a dropped point that looks like it came straight out of the Loveless shop and has a fairly straightforward knife handle shape. It is a little on the heavy side and maybe a little much for formal nights out. But, for everything else, it is a pleasure to carry, use, and fidget with. You may find yourself using this for more delicate jobs than you ever thought possible with a knife the size. You should watch their videos and see how they absolutely beat the garbage out of this knife and it takes it like a champ.
If you are looking for a nice knife that holds a great edge and is super tough, then by all means, go for it.
What do you carry and what do you think. Can you get a superior knife for 1/3 of the price of a Chris Reeve Knife?

I bought one in the CTS-XHP steel on eBay right before it was announced that cold steel company was sold. It was new in box! I love mine. RiP 🪦 cold steel 1980-2020.
"RIP" Ha! Yep, I kinda feel the same way. Glad you have an original. I prefer the blade grind on those, but truthfully, I prefer the S35VN version and their heat treat. Not sure why they changed the grind. The other was so cool looking.
@@knifetimestorywhat grind it used to be? And what is it now?
Glad to see another video, Sir. As always, quality content.
Thank you so much for checking in. Your positive comments really help keep me motivated.
@@knifetimestory I appreciate your sense of humor, greatly.
@@CapnBart1 Thank you. Glad you do!!
Good review. You may want to check out the Cold Steel Air light also; it’s not a carnival knife.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely look into it. Isn’t it funny how carnival knife really does describe a certain style!
I've been trying to comment, but seem to keep sloshing my comment off into the interwebs... So, here goes take 3:
Love me some Cold Steel. Really great video. I'm convinced. Must buy me one.
Third time's a charm.....
So glad you were persistent. Thank you so much for commenting. Keep me posted on your purchase!!
Nice review! This and your opinion on the Esee Xancudo and Chris Reeve's knife scam got you another subscriber.
I'm looking forward to more content.
Thank you!
Wow! Thank you very much! You really made my day. Those are very kind words.
I certainly want one now...thanks a lot!😂👍
Hi, thanks so much for watching. Glad you liked it. I sincerely hope you do in fact buy one and enjoy it. Let me know how it goes.
I have 2 of these knives as well. It's such a great knife and value. Cold steel does do DLC, recon 1's, American lawman, and ak-47 all come standard DLC and it's a pretty durable dlc as well.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I actually have an American lawman just as you described. It wasn’t until after I posted the video it dawned on me. I’d love to see them add that treatment to the ultimate hunter! I think that would be very cool!
About time...LOL. I do have to say that I much prefer the old XHP Bladed version. Their switch to S35vn was a bit of a let down. Cold Steels DLC coated blades are the best I’ve found.
Thank you so much for commenting. I agree with you and that I thought grind of the blade was cooler with the XHP version. But I’ve never been a fan of XHP. I had a few Spyderco knives with that steel and just never really warmed up to it. You are right about the DLC. My American Lawman has that and is showing no signs of wear.
Was going to say “Welcome to the Wacky World of Cold Steel” but it sounds as if your already immersed. Can’t speak on Spyderco’s XHP. It’s the S35vn that’s been all over the place for me. I’ve yet to find an example of that steel that out performs my old XHP blades.
@@dlrmon1 Thank you for the warm welcome! I will have to keep my eye out for an XHP version. I’d like to give it a try, plus I like the grind lines on it better. Looks more finished and refined!
If your gonna buy it for thumb flicking, batoning, and apples like him then ok but for actually skinning an animal then no, it's the ultimate failure and that's why there is no video on it skinning anything.
Excellent point. I think there are too many other nice fixed blade knives for skinning then to deal with a folding knife. So maybe that’s why you don’t see many of those videos. I agree though, if I had my choice, and I needed to skin a deer I would certainly use a fixed blade.
Thanks very much for watching and commenting!
