Knifetime Story

I’ve been using, making, modifying, living, and breathing knives since just after the summer of love. This channel is for me to unabashedly share my thoughts on cutlery. I have no sponsors and am beholden to no one. All knives are purchased by me. Anything I break is tossed in the trash and never sent in for warranty claims even though I've even had the owners of two of the best knife companies offer to replace a knife destroyed in a video. I politely declined.
If you see a knife in a video that you would like to buy, it would really help my channel if you were to go to my Storefront on Amazon and purchase it here www.amazon.com/shop/knifetimestory.
That makes it so it is easier for me to continue to purchase knives for the channel and keep on keeping on as they say. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching!

Good, but…There Is A MAJOR Issue.
IZULA II on steroids or is it a nice stand-alone addition to the ESEE line that will be around for a long time? Only time will tell. Here are my thoughts on it.

ESEE has been around long enough to start expanding into an additional premium version of their biggest sellers so that we can all spend more time cutting and less time sharpening. That would be the greatest contribution to the cutlery world they could make at this point in time. If you are interested in subscribing, I've made it easy for you with the link below. If you are a knife user, there is really no need to go into debt to have the latest and greatest thing on the market. My most used and serviceable knives are some of my least expensive. It's easy to be lured by all the new technology in steel and handle materials. But when you get right down to it, an $18 Mora Companion can do anything you throw at it. This is not to say Enzo and Brisa and Rand...

Have you ever seen something and instantly knew you were going to recreate it? That is how I felt with this knife. Just as in any art form, be it music, sculpture, or painting, ideas are "borrowed" and then adapted. It's been said that there are no new stories and that there really are only seven, and everything else is simply an adaptation. I believe that. When I saw Van's Swiss Army Knife, I ...

I did this because I feel this is an important topic and one that I have never seen spoken about, possibly because swollen ebony handle scales are not a common occurrence. However, it does happen. It may be a result of a pair that just was super dry upon assembly and then went to a humid area and had to grow, or, someone accidentally put their 110 in the wash (it's happened). I don't discuss ho...

ESEE IZULA Tips. Works For Izula and Izula II
Imperial v metric 😂🤣🤣
Definitely one of my favorites. I have the one in the video, 940-1 and a Benchmade custom shop in titanium & S90V. The only modern knife I have multiples of.
Bottom
I wonder if that would be legal in states where thumb studs are prohibited. 🤔
I go ss for food
Good choice.
Could you make a video on how you made the neck sheath? I want to try to do it
Thanks for the video idea. I may do that sometime in the future.
You look like red green’s stunt double
I'm way better looking, but he has a cooler voice.
I came across your video, is there another way to sand those edges without fancy belt grinder tools. Any suggestions would be appreciated?
Sure. Some bastard files and sandpaper.
I always go back the small, but mighty, compact.
Good choice.
Esee's 1095 is the reason I'm leaning very heavily toward a Bradford Guardian 3.2 in that Magnacut Magnacut Magnacut stuff that is so popular....😁 Thanks for the Video!
I had one, not in Magnacut but I did not like the way the handle felt in my hands.
@@knifetimestory Thanks, good to know. I'll find something, just needs to be a fairly decent stainless. I'm pretty certain how 1095 will end up in my care....
Just when I thought I could end this day with a smile on my face along you come with these gorgeous knives. I am now green with envy.
Sorry about that.
Love my 7 4.5
Great little knife for sure!
Like the knives, but they could have backed off on the stamping on the sheath.
It is on the back and done by hand with individual stamps. It never bothered me to see the variations of depth and alignment.
@@knifetimestory Understood
I noticed they spelled Randall wrong. Just kidding. Those are beasts
Ha! That would suck!!
SWEET!!! Those are danged nice! Leather, baby! 😮😊
I knew YOU would like them!!!
Man those are gorgeous!
Thank you!
I have several BRK but unfortunately I've had almost half of them come with issues some were major issues that I had to fix extensively myself. I now don't get any BRK's but instead have went to LTWK's. Every LT has been perfect for me.
Ahhh. Another dissatisfied customer. There are more of you out there than BRK is willing to acknowledge.
A2 (especially with a convex grind, that combo for me has been unfailing) and 3V are my 2 favorite steels. Very underrated steels in my opinion. I now need a Sencillo! Awesome video! ✌️
I've always liked A2 and O1 and D2. All the other stuff is just gravy.
@@knifetimestory I like D too 2. Dee two too. I enjoy D2 as well. Really good edge retention.
Works too a fault epic patina formula💪👏👍
So glad you gave it a try and had good results. Thanks for letting me know.
Dude, I figured it out...!!! You were "Squints" from The Sandlot !!!! Damn....
That’s hilarious. But… No. I am much better looking and still have all my hair.😁👍🏻
2000 percent accurate and thank you. I approve of this video.
Glad you approve!!
you were in a couple of movies?
If you count UA-cam as movies, then yes. Otherwise...no.
How about...Don't go to New York for anything....To include investing money, vacations...You know spending money in New York or on New York. Fuck em'
That works too. Excellent suggestion.
There’s videos out there of you grinding on stuff? Congrats on finally starting that Only Fans channel!
Oh my. I read your comment a couple of times before I "got it". Yikes. NOBODY would want to see that!!!😂
“It cuts like a mofo” I immediately subbed
Glad you caught that and appreciated it. Thanks for the sub!!
Nice blade. I also would love if they came up with an Updated Izula/Izula 2 with thinner blade geometry and 3v/MagnaCut or even Cruwear.
I wonder if we can apply enough pressure to ESEE to do the right thing!!!!
I can see the excitement on your facial expression! The maxamet pm2 does come sharp and the spine is rounder. The jimping on mine is still aggressive. But mine came with the lanyard tube smaller than it should be. Not understanding how that happened. Maybe they used the one for a different model. Been using maxamet for over a year now. Liking the steel so far. Definitely good for cutting abrasive materials. Any thoughts on it now, after a few months of use?
Glad you are experiencing a positive result from that steel. I still like it very much, but...have gravitated to 15V simply because it is less chippy.
@@knifetimestorycan’t say i found maxamet to be chippy
That is great! My knives may be from a different heat treat run. I know there are variations of REX 45 out there as well. Some in the mid60s and then others in the low 60s.
I really want a Sencillo. It came out just after I bought my Izula II. Yeah I'm a bit salty about that.
Welp, as much as I like the A2, and the size, I'm using my S35VN Izula with the extended handles 90% of the time bacause of that one major issue I have with the Sencillo. Too bad. They should have thought that out better.
Good video. All valid points. This knife geometry is for small food prep, it's not a waddling knife. Lately Esee has been dissapointing with some of their new models, instead of building upon amd improving their legendary legacy. This knife and their Kukri being some of the examples. Cheers!
Great comment and very valid points. Thank you for sharing!!
Tom, good to see your oversized Irish head again! Been a while. That looks like a great little blade. Is it me, or is that kind of similar to the Izula 2 and the 3 modified handle.... Are you really sure you dont want to see more designs from ESEE? I sometimes wonder if they couldn't break a mold or two. Great video. Congrats on the tractor. 👍🏻
Thank you Jeff. Great to hear from you!! More designs would be cool, if they would just do me the one favor, and make the Izula out of great steel. The S35VN is quite nice, but Magnacut would just be freakin' awesome. 3V would be nice too. Loving the tractor. Loader / Backhoe that is going to make my life WAY easier.
I bought a 110 after losing my 112, it's the finger groove version from 2011 420 HC, not designer steel but pretty good edge holding and easy to sharpen. On that note, that is why Buck use 420hc, as some designer steels you need to be an expert to sharpen it! Liked the video, except when you start to go on about toxic chemicals! That's just plain silly! Do you own a fibreglass boat... Made with chemicals! See what I mean, to relate to a knife handle compared to many other things in life is rediculous, Beware if you drop your ebony handle on a hard floor it's a hard brittle wood and while it might feel nice to hold it's way more likely to cracking than the "Toxic" handled version! Good video but let down by the above....!!!!
Thank you for the kind words about the video and the critique. I always appreciate them. I do think you misunderstood my stance on the chemical thing though. Perhaps I was not clear. In a nutshell: Buck used to use real wood. Then switched to the Dymond wood probably because tree huggers whined, or Dymond wood just was so much cheaper and they needed to cut costs because Walmart priced the knife so low. The irony about the tree hugger/environmentalist thing is that they complain trees are being needlessly slaughtered to make knife handles, so the alternative is a composite/fake wood that requires wood, and a toxic soup of chemicals to create a more environmentally friendly handle. Sort of like electric cars. Where do people think the electricity comes from? Coal. So, in essence, they are coal powered. I'm glad Buck has gone back to wood and am in favor of natural materials in knives like the 110. But, have no issue with G10 and Micarta and other man made materials in more modern knives like anything from Spyderco. Hope that clears up my stance. Cheers.
Thanks for another great video Tom. Sincilo was my last knife of 2023 before my 24 resolution for no new knives. Got mine in MAGNACUT. The choil is the issue with that knife, it will bite you with hard use. Extra large hands, if I get into any form of pressing down on the knife I’m nicked a little. I’m always nicked somewhere so I don’t pay it much mind. I sharpened the spine on mine, where it would scrape bark and throw sparks on a fero rod. It’s my motorcycle knife now. I like MAGNACUT a lot, if they ever make a E3 or E4 in MAGNACUT those are gonna be hard to beat. Still hanging tough on my resolution, 7 1/2 months down. Thanks again for the laughs.
Very good that you are still holding out. Good luck and all the best 😊
Seven and 1/2 months. Congrats. You have tremendous will power. If it were not for the "Loophole" I don't know if I could really have done a full year of not buying. Glad I'm not alone with the "choil" issue. Maybe if enough of us complain, they will go back to the drawing board and make it right. Always appreciate your comments. Thank you!
I was considering getting the Sencillo in magnacut but I’m going to hold out for the pacaya in 3V .
IIRC you made a post saying you were not getting any more knives... I have this same problem :)
"Loop hole" 😂
Yes I did. HOWEVER...remember, there is the Loophole. The channel, which according to tax law, is it's own entity, it is actually doing the buying. I'm simply helping out said entity and choosing which knives it should buy!!! 😂
@@knifetimestorygreat. Now I need to start up a knife channel 😢
I highly recommend it!
*_You need to get your hands on a White River Backpacker M1 Pro._*
I have the M1 in Magnacut and love it - it's nearly perfect. I only wish its handle scales were a bit more substantial and filled the hand like the Izula 2 does. Will have to look into having some made perhaps.
I too have looked at it and the handle is way to anemic for my hands. Too bad.
I’m confused ? What mower deck do you use with your new uzula ll tractor? Love your channel I’m trying hard to hold back … from buying another knife this month… 🤔 maybe I’ll study this a bit.
Ha. No mower deck. New tractor is a loader/backhoe. I love it!!
Let’s talk tractors.
Maybe someday I'll do a video from the seat of my tractor and use the loader as a camera boom.
@@knifetimestory I am looking forward to it. You might consider using the rear hitch because hindsight is always 20/20.
Very clever!
@@knifetimestory Thanks!
I've sold my 45 year knife collection piece by piece over the last 12 months. I've gotten to a point where I couldn't give a crap about the knife community as all you see is clowns selling old knives for super inflated prices and the same for new knives, the industry has been ruined by ego maniacs. Then you have all the clones on UA-cam doing their little battoning through wood to prove how amazing their knife is and you hardly ever see them use a knife for what it's really intended for. I could go on and on about the cons of the knife community but I don't have a good week to write everything.
That is a very poignant and thought-provoking comment. I agree. That is why most of my videos… I would say 98% of them are with me just talking about different aspects of the knife for history or some modifications. I too am very disenchanted by the knife community. I grew up going to knife shows and getting to talk to you all kinds of makers and it was a very special time. Now the Internet even though it has provided a way for me to have a forum to talk about knives, it has in my opinion to a degree ruined The knife community. Too many con artist, copycats, and people with only a modicum of life knowledge professing to be an expert. Quite frankly… I have forgotten more about knives and the history of them than most people will ever know. Mind you, I have been immersed in this since I was 11 and became a member of the Case Collectors Club when it was first introduced.
@@knifetimestory Cudos old fella.
The 70s and 80s when hunting for that knife was akin to treasure hunting, looking through magazines and catalogues in an attempt to find that one knife you long for, the adventure you had just to find that one knife. In my case travelling from the country to over 300 kilometres to go to a sports store where you walk in and the owners remember you even after a year or more and the genuine conversations you had back then and the knowledge that was learnt by just shutting your mouth. I agree the net has ruined so much of what we used to be. When you grow up in the bush and use knives on a daily basis, it's hilarious to watch the armchair experts telling me all about knives. Also I have split thousands of logs with an axe and never a knife, that's not what a knife is for. Finding an old knife covered in rust and you get home and give her a good clean up and you feel as though you won the lottery and say to yourself how terrific it is, knowing fully well it's probably only a cheapy but it left a memory and feeling that no new knife could ever fill. Memories of long ago, that sir is the knowledge that is of the most value to me these days. Thanks for the chat old mate. It's much appreciated. All the best from down under.
Great comment. Thanks for sharing. I love stories like that and when people share them!!
Hahaha 😮 hahaha
Webster marble did invent the stacked Leather handle And it is copied by other knife makers!😮
Yep. Perhaps he could not patent it. Or was cool and just wanted people to have a great handle material, regardless of who was making the knife.
Looks similar to my model 7
Same exact knife, just reduced about 25%. I just ordered one with a leather handled this evening. Funny you should write this comment. I've had other model 7's but never with the leather handle. That is my favorite handle.
I like both I have one with stone washed finish and ranger green extended grips like the top one both are great
Glad you like it. Thanks for commenting.
The Izula with the hollow grips you made is my favorite! I bought some canvas micarta and I'm hoping to replicate that. Can't go wrong with a stainless Izula!
I wish you luck on your project. Let me know how it turns out.
I love the green but the extended grips really improve the Izula in my opinion. I have large hands and that extra half inch makes a big difference (that's what she said.)
Yes she did!
