Hi! Greetings from Vancouver, Canada. This is my first time watching one of your videos and I liked it so much I subscribed right away. My question is: Would these make food-safe molds? I mostly use silicone molds for chocolate making and you are absolutely right - they are expensive. I have found a few at the dollar store, but I'm limited to what the manufacturer wants you to make. If I can make my own chocolate molds the sky's the limit!
I've done these before, but it wasn't great...I don't think I used enough cornstarch, so will follow your tip about pizza dough consistency! (Thank you!) Can this be used for resin casting?
Corn starch in the silicone! That's certainly interesting!! By the way, Silyl Modified Polymer Adhesive Sealant can also be used to make moulds and stamps. It has a number of advantages making it better than silicone. Firstly, it doesn't stink. Note that Silyl Polymer adhesive which you also apply with a caulking gun does not require thickening; it's thicker than silicone. The major reason I stopped using silicone was not because it was soft or because it stank. It was because it shrinks while drying. It is like latex rubber, and I needed it to retain the same size as the original object so I could press paper between the original and the mould (to produce an embossing. Note that silicone doesn't stick to washing up liquid, so if you coat the object first you have a better chance of it not sticking. How do I know this? Basic plumbing, naturally! If you are sealing a pipe or filling the space between tiles in your bathroom, you use washing up liqued to clean it off! I changed however to silyl modified polymer adhesive because although it is a little more expensive, it didn't shrink. Note that with small objects like the ones you used, you hardly notice the shrinkage. But get to making moulds of A6 size, it is noticeable, and with A5 or A4, it is simply intolerable. The mould shrinks to around 1cm smaller. Note that I tried this with standard bathroom silicone. I wonder if corn starch would prevent it from shrinking?. I like the idea of the clay; but I imagine that it would break apart when I try to emboss things with it in either my A3 embosser of my book press. I fear also that as I press the clay into the mould, the mould would stretch meaning that after you pulled it off, the original would be smaller. Here's another tip: silyl polymer adheisve doesn't stick to itself after it has dried, at least if you use different colours and apply a layer of washing up liquid to it. Here's the thing: there's only one thing silicone will stick to reliably: itself. It doesn't matter what you use as a releasing agent.. If you try to make a mould of a mould your efforts are almost inevitably doomed to fail... Modified polymer adhesive/sealant, however, doesn't. So I can make a mould of a mould of a mould!
@@happy.homestead To make moulds with either silicone or silyl polymer, I fortunately do't need to touch it. I cut out the size a little larger than the object from a piece of cardboard, I place the cardboard on the adheisve side of sticky paper used to cover books, then I place the object in the cardboard in the place I've cut out and which has a sticky bottom. The next logical step is to paint the object with washing up liquid so that the glue won't stick to iit when it dires. I paint the mould and the cardboard surrounding it and I also don't forget the sticky paper. Then I just apply the caulking gun adhesive by covering it with glue, last of all place a sheet of see through plastic/mylar on the top. This way, I never need to actually touch the silicone. I've got a book press, so these days I put this simple sandwich of cardboard frame, glue, object and clear/sticky paper in the press to mmake sure the glue squishes into every last edge of the object and the . But before I had a book press I would press it from above with a die-cut embosser or use two planks and then place a heavy item on them. There are some additional techniques I need to do to make sure there are no air bubbles around the item and underneath the paper sheets, but anyway I just wait until the whole thing has dried, and then take the whole thing out of the book press, pull off the paper sheets. This is, of course, where the technique gets tricky. If I'm making a mould of a mould.... but it's all over when it dried and you're just making a single mould.
@@happy.homestead You really have to do your best to not touch the glue espeicially silicone which stinks to high heaven! It's not latex which is not corrrosive and is comparatively unsmelly. Silicone sealant is pretty disgusting and will only wash off by attacking it with the most corrosive cleaning alcohols. The cornmeal solution seems like a curious idea, but if it works.
*Another popular name for this specific range of polymer sealants used to make this product is "MS Polymer Adhesives". I've used two different brands and achieved similar results. I had to look this all up, but MS polymer refers to the modified silane/silyl polymer chemical which is combined with other chemicals to produce a relatively odourless adhesive you can (also) make moulds out of. They are seen as the "new" alternative to silicone which is highly toxic.
I have a vintage frame that has the detail in one side chipped off and for quite awhile I e been trying to come up with a way of copying the stamping and repair the frame. THIS IS IT. Thank you so much!

(Starting with decoupage tricks to every transfer method I've watched on your channel) And one more thing...when you say "hello UA-cam friends" I just love it! I feel like you're my crafting buddy! When my roommate hears your voice they say, "Are you hanging out with Deidre again?" Of course! I can't get enough!!! Many, many thanks from a UA-cam friend in Atlanta!
Thanks so much Melissa for the kind words so glad you’re enjoying all of my content I try to keep my videos short into the point an easy for any stage a DIYer is at and I love having lots of UA-cam Crafting friends

You remind of my art elementary school art teacher; so talented that it all looked easy and so upbeat that everyone wanted to try it out. Thanks for the inspiration!
Aww how sweet! ❤️

Me too!!
I stumbled on this at random. As a 30 year remodeling craftsman, I did not know this could be done. I could have used this technique hundreds of times. Thank you for reminding me that I don't know everything.
Glad I could help!
So great u tried this method and showed us how it works. I’ve seen it in videos, but there are so many fakes out there -wasn’t sure it was real. Thank you for showing the easy technique. You are such a great teacher!! I love your crafts!
Glad this video was helpful! Thanks for watching
How great that was to watch! Thank you so much, will be finding my baby doll heads to make molds of. Put them in natural knot holes in wood pieces found in old dead trees 🌳 that are falling apart. This is going to be awesome, wondering how I would do this now thanks to you I know! Thanks again. Shirl K - Texas
What a cool idea! Do you just place them around for people to find, or do you sell them for others to use? Do you take photos and show them on Instagram?
Oh that sounds fun!!!
Deidre, I'm thinking your brain never takes a rest. You always come up with the most brilliant ideas... You're amazing! Thanks so much for sharing them with us!

There are many ways to make silicone molds but I like your way most because it is easy, no mess and pick up the details well. And, we decide on how hard or fkexible the mold will be. Thanks for sharing this diy. ❤❤❤
Thanks so much 😊
Desire, if I didn't have to work today I'd be in my craft room making molds! I've already bought the silicone & have a mental list of things I want to duplicate but was hesitant about the best process to make the molds. After watching this video I'm not hesitant anymore! Thank you for inspiring me!

Top technique! I have wanted to make moulds but been put off by the hassle of using dish soap...This is much simpler! Thank you.

Thanks for reminding me I need to make a few molds. Yes, I've used the Silicone+cornstarch method and thought it set up too quickly. I've also tried straight Silicone into dish soapy water for large (textural) items. I preferred the latter but will give cornstarch another try. Again, thanks for sharing and reminding me I have a few projects to do, lol.

Finally! A tutorial that works! I have waisted so much money trying to make the silicone/soap/water molds. I could never get it to work.
Yes it works fantastic fun DIY
Excellent, I have a ornate frame with a corner moulding missing this tutorial will let me make it and fill in the gap so thanks. So easy to do.
Glad it was helpful!
talk about super simple! Love it! I haven't made molds yet, but i have used silicone thinned with nail polish remover to 'paint' onto and into cloth and crocheted projects for a hard permanent waterproof household item. I used a small clear squeeze tube of silicone. A cheaper way to test out if you like doing it before getting the large tube.
Say! You could make a mold out of the threaded end of a jar and use the molded item for a screw-on piece that can be decorated... hmmm loads of possibilities with this stuff! Thank you for sharing something useful and easy for everyone!!!
💕💕
So many possibilities!!
I think the frame from the dollar store was my favorite and I would love to see what that looks like if you made a piece of resin out of that mold. I bet you would come up with some interesting designs. You’re very talented. Thank you for sharing

Thank you so much Deidra! I was just about to spend an Arm and a leg first on Molds and then on a Make your own Silicone Mold Kit. I recently started experimenting& working with Polymer clay and Epoxy resin. Of course I needed molds and like you said they can be very expensive, especially if you want a variety of them like me. I thought there's gotta be a better way like to make my own Silicone molds. And I found a couple different kits that come with the solutions to mix and make the silicone and again that's not cheap either. I was about to spend 50 bucks on this DIY kit and they don't give you a lot unless you want to create miniature molds. Anyway thank you for this awesome tutorial, the tips and advice, I appreciate it bunches!!!!!
Glad it was so helpful Jackie thanks for watching and happy crafting

I don't know ..you'll have to experiment, but make a silicone mold of a non broken wood embellishments then use saw dust and wood glue mix to make the cast of the piece. You should be able to sand and stain the new casting like wood. It would be worth it if it works.
Very different for me. I watched the video to the end. Thank you

Soak the mold in rubbing alcohol inside a sealed container for a larger version of the mold. Takes a couple days but the mold will double or triple in size. Work quick when ready to cast as the mold will return to its original size as the alcohol evaporates.
What!!!! No way….im trying that
How do you do that? Would you explain more?
So you mean leaving the mould in a sealed container? After taking the object off it?

Woo! My fiancee had a half used tube of silicone caulking material left over from re-sealing our bathroom and was going to have to toss it soon. I used this method an it worked well! (though the pigment I used was some of a 1lb pound bag of glow pigments from an old resin table top project so figured why not, recycling is best and everything is better when it glows in the dark!
So glad you found me! Love new crafting friends. Hope you find lots of great content. This is not food grade
Thank you so much for making this video. So affordable. Your stuff is always right on.

Does it stick to your hands when you're trying to make molds?

Hi Deidra,
I have never used silicone or resin before but those are 2 crafts I have wanted to try for a long time, but, I have underlying COPD die to my pectus escavatium and I am not even allowed to use aresol hair spray and when I lived at my mom's house and had a back yard or when I had a balcony years ago with an outlet for sanding tools and or spray paint I did many projects. I have recently moved to a very tiny dwelling and we are not allowed to do anything outside accept eat on the picnic tables. This little place is my stepping stone as I call it. I hope to buy my own home by next summer and my only wish is for an outside porch or a nice patio. As I get older my breathing is very bothered by odors but, if I can outside and with an air rater mask such as body shop painters wear I would like to try some other crafts. My aunt makes beautiful jewerky out of clay and she collects leaves and other cool shapes to make them. I love all your videos. Your quite a unique, cook and wonderfully talented woman. I wish I was your neighbor.
Fondly,
