I learned this technique 40 years ago when I was in the military. There we pasted foil on topographic maps and removed the paper background. Then we could crumple up the maps and put them in our pockets or backpacks without the paper tearing at the creases when folded several times. As a result, the maps lasted at least half a year before we could then no longer use them. Paper maps we had to change every few weeks.

I like to use 3m wetordry sandpaper 400 or 600 grit. It's actually designed to be used wet so water won't ruin it and you can use it over and over... plus you end up with a nice matte finish.

Used this technique in 1972 with contact paper. We cut the transparencies to the size of 35mm slide frames to create a slide show for a junior high school slideshow. Contact paper will work for transfers that are to large for packing tape. Thanks for the memories!

When I was a kid in the 70s, I had a slide projector kit that used exactly this method to produce slides. I used to bore my family to death with my nature and astronomy presentations from magazine pictures😂 I hadn't thought of using it for other crafts. Thanks!

I remember a while back when my friend doodled a drawing onto my arm. I liked it that much that I used clear packing tape to lift the drawing from my skin and stick it down on paper. Was able to keep that drawing for years instead of until it got washed off. Sticky tape is so versatile.

I have this one client for 8 years, and although the very first kids I worked with are now instructors that work with me, he is always badgering me for more varied projects... that aren't more costly than the ones we already do. and as you all know, ornamental paper bits are very expensive... especially when working with 200 kids and more, a day!

      Off topic, but...
I love glitter too! Just yesterday I painted my toenails purple and sprinkled glitter on while the polish was still wet, then put on a clear topcoat.
I also like to add glitter to the bodies of dead beetles I find in the yard! or use those rubber or plastic insects they sell at hobby shops. I did a plastic tarantula & made a brooch. Again, use a clear nail polish top coat to seal or some spray poly-coat. Yeah OK it's weird but what the heck. I've got lots of free time!

You can do something similar with pictures - take a good picture (B&W works really well), and make a photo copy onto regular copy paper. Take Modge Podge or white glue and glue the picture FACE DOWN onto a rustic board. Make sure you press it down really well so there's no bubbles. Once it dries, get a wet sponge and slowly, one part at a time, dampen the picture and rub away the paper. The image is left on the wood, but also you can see the wood come through.

These are fun. If you want the text or image on opposite side also, i.e., magazine, book page, etc. put packing tape on both sides, fold an edge down on both sides of packing tape so you can create a handle. Put in water, may take a little longer as water seeps from edges then you can gently pull each piece of packing tape put back in water a bit then rub paper off and you have both sides of text or printed magazine, etc.

I am a bit of a tape snob, though, and I would say that cheap packing tape is always a bad idea. Heavy Duty Packing tape just performs better in handle-ability, longevity, stickiness, flatness, (Anti-curling,) everything. I quit buying dollar store tape long ago, If you buy heavy duty at the big box hardware store, or online, it is usually not that expensive.

There are decals for equipment, machinery, appliances that are no longer in production. With a bit of google for a photo and then print, you could easily come up with a usable reproduction decal/sticker. WOO HOO. Curious if anyone has tried this method with a full sheet of laminate (paper). I think it would give you a larger option. While sticky like packing tape, the laminate page may not have the chemistry required to capture and hold the transfer.

When you said transfers, I was thinking of the transfers that you burnish onto your background like this page. They have “furniture transfers” like that where it looks what created, but you take the transfer and apply it to the wood by rubbing the back firmly with a burnishing stick. This is cool though. Can you imagine how next level that would be? Plus , those kind of transfers are pricey.

I believe this may work best if one prints their design directly onto a page ripped out of a magazine instead of regular printer paper. At least, it does when transferring the toner directly to wood and metal by using a clothes iron to re-melt the toner and stick it to the wood or metal surface. The magazine paper is glossy/slippery and therefore the toner doesn't embed and adhere quite as well to it as it does to printer paper (which is designed to hold onto that toner for dear life 😸 since tax documents with numbers that fell or rubbed off are pretty useless). I think glossy photo paper is also good because it too is slippery and harder to stick the toner onto, but it's expensive. You can probably get an old magazine out of your neighborhood recycling bins within 5 minutes of looking. 😸 I've never used this trick (which is great BTW, thanks!) but I have done the "toner--->wood & metal with an iron" method both for making a wooden art display piece and for making a mask for etching a custom copper circuit board, and it works fantastically. :)
