How to put images on kydex! Sublimation!

Sadly our image at the end did not come out that well, do to my printer needing to be clean. But this is how you add images onto kydex.
The art of sublimation is a wonderful thing.
Here is my step by step tutorial on how people sublimate onto kydex itself.
Its pretty easy but can get frustrating and overwhelming.
But persistence always wins.
Total cost into sublimation equipment
My set up is around 450-500
I have learned quite a bit and today i learned that ill be doing print head cleanings before printing onto light kydex,

Yeah started subbing Kydex about a year and a half ago. No videos out back then. Wasted tons of plastic, I ended up getting help from some people to get me on the right track. Hard part form me is the computer work and getting all the settings right. It’s been fun though. Very convenient when you have an idea for a cool print and you don’t have to wait or explain it to anyone.
What are the chances of me talking you into selling me a few prints, for me to try this Sublimation process here in my shop?

Just watched this video on sublimation. Do you have to use that paper or something else like pattern paper from the store?

Thank you for the video. The reason it didn't transfer right is because you printed on the back of the paper. Blue is the back and white is print area.
I just did an American Flag on white dex. Used a little different temp and time. 400 for 60. Turned out well. Pressed in coffee bum and lost a little color. Overall fairly satisfied. I think mine would be better had i vacuumed it.
Those extra lines are "ghosting". Those lines get transferred when you lift the heat press top. Happens all the time.
Most likely not your print head
It’s probably the rollers that left the marks . Switching paper helps with that .
Whats the laser engraver you use I'm using a LM-2-4 Pro to engrave and it works great but I want that fast speed whatcha rec?

Bro… how am I using your exact heat settings, Epson ET8550, a plus submliation paper. My kydex bubbles and warps and doesn’t transfer the ink properly, then paper sticks to the kydex. Whaaaaaat in the woooorld 😂
All presses are different!
Now gotta try to find those transfer paper in my country. Is it have to be exact brand of transfer paper or others will do just fine?
As long as it's sublimation paper you're fine

Have you ever done a vinyl transfers onto kydex? Wondering if it's worth it. I feel like maybe fabric covered kydex it would be.
I don't but I know people who put small deals on holsters
I know this is an old post but on my Epson I needed to use a usb cable instead of wi-fi. Mine would leave extra lines otherwise.

Did you edit the video like trim it? 450 seconds is 7.5 min and it doesn’t match up to pressing to peeling? Thanks. Trying to get blacker blacks and getting blue.
7.5 minutes staring at a press is boring lol so the time is cut for video purposes. Time also depends on paper. I have paper now that transfers in 150 seconds not 450 now. So that's a plus. And colors are affected by the setting you use

Either by hand with a scroll saw and or band saw. Or with the addition of a router

Printers jack ink jet sub paper
How did you create the block you are using at the 10:20 mark? Would love to see a video of the process if you dont already have one.
its aluminum flat stock from home depot thats cut to size. holstersmith has that particular blocking with 3 predrilled holes ready for purchase as well. I use those now

It's and epsom workforce. Forgot the model. I can get that later. But I think I say it in my sublimation video

Has to be sublimation ink, paper. Printer has to recognize it as well

Sublimation printers are there own thing. But you can convert others. I have an epsom et 2720 with sublimation ink and sublimation paper. Those are crucial to the process

Negative, at least not yet. I outsource the molds currently

Mdf I think.

No it's more likely a renshape tooling board, I cut them at work all the time

Can you upload any picture to put on the kydex ?
Yes. And the lightest color of the image is usually the color it's printed on
What if you only want to do a small logo?
same process. Generally the lightest color in the logo is the color of the kydex. or depending on what it is, ill just laser it on it

Sadly they were there. So that holster will be in a bargain bin. Just ordered 2 more sheets of yellow though!

Please figure out a way to make a holster using the flamethrower to heat the kydex. Impractical...? Yes. Stupid...? Most certainly. Excellent, epic content...? You bet your ass! 🤣
