This is by far the best demonstration of this stitch! I watched 2 other videos, and still couldn’t see where that third loop was. You solved that for me! Subscribed!!!
This is the very best explanation of the 3rd loop half double crochet I have watched! Hands Down! Showing the top of the stitch and its relationship to the third loop is so helpful. Also, thank you for explaining how stitches are made.
This was a super helpful explanation, thank you! I'd never heard of this method until I saw it in a pattern and freaked out because I couldn't figure it out. Now I see it is really easy!!
Thank you! I have been crocheting for 50 years and have never heard of this. I bought a pattern on Etsy, and this stitch is in the pattern. There are no directions, nothing. AND I am left-handed. Oh boy! I get so mad that designers DO NOT think about us lefties! thank goodness you are here! An Angel in disguise!
As a person who routinely only crochets very simple stitches, I was floundering to understand this stitch via other tutorials; however with your concise, clear instructions and close video, I got the hang of it in a jiffy. Many thanks from Australia.
Thank you for that very clear demonstration. My pattern called for HDC3L but didn't provide any explanation. Now I can continue my project. I had no idea that a HDC had a 3rd loop!
Thank you so much from a beginner crocheter adding crochet to my years long only knitting flat :D It makes this so clear. I wanted a differentiation from the bottom of my first basket project after learning just doing small rounds and this is perfect!
yay! I'm glad it was helpful! Next, check out front post and back post stitches...they're another great way to turn a corner like that :) I don't have a video up yet, but hope to soon.
@@StitchesnScraps I'll have to look for one until you have yours up. I watched a video on how to do them and also tried to actually do the front and back post half double crochet stitches. I can't picture how to turn a corner like that but sounds great :) I was going to add something and totally forgot what it was! Lol
@@melvinbeli1 This is a very old one, for front and back post single crochet, but you'll be able to see how it makes 90 degree angle. Basically do one row of either front or back post (depending on which direction you want to go), and then continue crocheting as normal - you'll have created a 90 degree angle in your work :) stitchesnscraps.com/tutorial-front-back-post-single-crochet-fpsc-bpsc/
1) it could be a tension thing, try using a larger hook or crocheting more loosely, or stick a smaller hook in the third loop and wiggle it to open it up more. 2) Is the loop bigger on the other side? one side has a tiny loop like you describe, the other side has a large loop.
So when facing your work, the third loop will always be in front, and just below the regular “v” that you would normally go into if doing a regular hdc? By the way, your nails look great! And you have a really nice calm voice for teaching! Thank you!
Well it depends on which side of your work you are looking at, right? The third loop is at the back of the hdc when you make it...so if you're working without turning, it will always be at the back. If you're turning your work, it will be in the front when you turn it once, and then in back when you turn it again, and so forth. Also it's technically possible (though not easy) to work into the back side of the third loop, and some designers will have you do that. So always check the pattern in case they have specified front or back.
Thanks for the video. Great explanation. Is it only the half-double crochet that has this special 3rd loop? Are there other crochet stitches with an extra loop that you can use?
Great question! The third loop comes from the extra yarn over that an hdc has. People usually only refer to it as a third loop when it's hdc. But It's basically the same loop as the "diagonal bar" of a double crochet, and taller stitches have more of them.
Easily the best example of the 3rd loop I've seen. You make this very clear and simple to understand. Thank you!
Thanks!

AMAZING thank you so much for this explanation! I'm working in rounds and I was stunned at how well the "scooping" method worked.

Thank you I really enjoyed your video. I love the hdc stitch but have never noticed that third loop. Kindest regards from Australia 🐨

Perfect, exactly what I needed to know. Thanks Pia. 🙏❤️
you're very welcome - glad to help!
It just registered that that would be a way I'd love to do it with going behind the V and scooping it backwards. I love that!
Thank you for this super clear demo! I *finally* got it!

Great video! Can I ask why I'm unable to hook through all my third loops. They seem to be so tight and barely visible?
1) it could be a tension thing, try using a larger hook or crocheting more loosely, or stick a smaller hook in the third loop and wiggle it to open it up more.
2) Is the loop bigger on the other side? one side has a tiny loop like you describe, the other side has a large loop.
I have tried crocheting it more loosely as you suggested and the loops are finally bigger. Thanks!
