    OMFG! I can't believe I almost missed this, perhaps the coolest Otis interview ever!
    Tommy Stinson IS rock 'n roll, embodied in a human being.
    Extra thanks for this one, Otis.
    Long live The 'Mats!

    I got to have dinner with Tommy once in Oakland. I had just finished Trouble Boys and was looking forward to picking his brain about the Mats but he wasn't having it. He mostly wanted to talk about Buckethead and GnR which was totally cool too. I was sober at the time but he went through three drinks. Then he excused himself early cuz he had to do something called "Drinking with Tommy" where fans payed to have a drink with him before his show. I went to his show and he killed it. I ran into him and his drummer a year later at a bar in SF. It was around noon. I was still sober but was there to do some business. I couldn't believe it but he somehow remembered me. He even remembered my name. It was one of the coolest moments of my life!

    Oh man. I saw the 'Mats on that Petty tour where they were about as out of water as a fish could bel. Also worked at a coffee shop in the 90s where Tommy used to come in for his first caffeine of the day. Not gonna lie, seemed like he may not have been in the best of shape some of those morning, still hurting a little bit. But always an incredibly gracious, friendly guy. I"m not surprised he has become such a successful sideman, excellent player, but at least as importantly the kind of guy you don't mind sharing a dressing room/hotel/bus with for a month or two. Great stuff, Otis, thanks a ton.

    FYI - they opened for Keith at the Brendan Byrne Arena in Joisey - December '88. I scalped a ticket thinking I'd never see the Mats in an arena again. And then came the Petty tour...

    Tommy Stinson and Keith Richards are a part of music that connect art to music and make the sum grater than their parts. In their wake are the many artists of all stripes that share the same essence. Long live art. ☮

    Jim rubbed elbows with some musical heavyweights, that’s for sure. I like the Dylan story when Bob went down to the Zebra Ranch and after taking the scene in, turned to Jim and said, “you know Jim, a man could do some thinking down here”, probably while staring at Leon Russell’s piano in the yard.
    As far as Jim telling stories, “stories” could very well have a double meaning, depending on which story Jim was telling.

      Also, thinking the Keef bio Tommy mentions is prob the one by Stanley Booth, who is a music writer you need to check out if you haven’t. His Dancing With the Devil (believe this is book Tommy mentions) is prob my second fav Stones book and the best I’ve read about their first years. Rhythm Oil is also a must read book

    • @melodymakermark
      @melodymakermark 3 місяці тому

      @TR-yi8up, Jim had a hand in setting up the Stones in Muscle Shoals, but it was actually Stanley who got it done, as he and Jerry Wexler were good friends. Stanley was at the sessions, too. You Got to Move, Brown Sugar and Wild Horses.
