0:32 “I play guitar in a band called The Cult”. Legendary player, epic riffs and the coolest look for over 40 years. The majority of people watching this will be totally aware of who Billy is and The Cult’s legacy, yet he still feels the need to introduce himself and the band in the humblest of manners. Just a brilliant and class act.
As a White Falcon player myself I really loved this video . This and the setzer hot rod Black Falcon are amazing signature Gretsch models. Mr Duffy spitting truths on this shoot. Keeping it real.
The clarity and "breadth" as Mr. Duffy put it while he is modulating the sound is why I also love Gretsch guitars. You could still hear each individual note as he played. This was a wonderful video.
I discovered the Cult in 1986. Been my fav band ever since. I may need one of these.. 🤘💀. Billy and Ian, come hang out in Park City, Utah, USA. Rock on …. peace and love 🤙🍻
Has to be on of the greatest youtube videos ever!...and certainly one of the most badass guitar players ever! This was an absolute pleasure and I want to thank Billy and The Cult for giving me chills at the Auditorium, here in Thunder Bay, recently. That performance was outstanding, and meant alot for someone who was ther from the very beginning. I was young fan way back then, now much oder at almost 54, but so glad the band carries on. What a beautiful guitar! What a beautiful person! Love you Billy, The Cult and Gretsch! I rock their drums too! Cheers!
Been a huge fan of Billy's since I was 10 years old and have grown up with him. IT started in 1990. Dudes such a nice badass! Thank you for the tunes and great guitars!
“Find yourself.” I needed to hear that. Great story and background of his experiences with Gretsch guitars. Seems like a nice guy with a creative and well-rounded attitude. Thank you Sir. I have a Gretsch 5622t and hardly walk by it without picking it up and playing.
I am definitely a white Falcon guy as soon as I find one that will stay in tune. You have done the best presentation of a Gretsch white Falcon that I've ever seen in my opinion and I love the sound in this video completely 100%
Never really been a big fan of The Cult, but I've always admired Billy Duffy as a player and a musician. He's a perfect example of a player who has created his own sound instead of trying to copy or "improve" upon something that came before. Also, you can't go wrong with a Falcon.
Not sure the phaser effect was the best choice to showcase this amazing instrument. But it's Billy and he can do whatever he wants. Like the Chuck Norris of the guitar world. Billy's the man.
After hearing the album "Love" when in came out in the 80's I always wanted a Gretsch, now I have several Gretsch Hollow bodies and a Jet. There is nothing like an amp cranked playing a Gretsch Hollow body you actually feel the sound reverberating throughout the instrument. Billy is a amazing artist he has so many iconic riffs! now if only I could play like Billy!
"...made it like if it took acid and rode a Harley Davidson..." describes that era of The Cult well. Also £800 in 81 is equivalent to around £3800 today - a fair chunk of change!
Still love the punchy and crystal clear sound of the "Electric" album, one of Rick Rubins (and The Cults) masterpieces. I will always use it to test any new audio equipment :)
Man there were a ton of music shops back then in and near Charing Cross Road. You had Selmer which is a Chipotle now, then Macari's, Orange, Rose and Morris, Sound City and Top Gear.
Congrats on 40 years Mr.Most under rated great guitar player!!! Been a fan since LOVE, saw you open for Billy Idol when ELECTRIC came out ( That show was Insane) and saw you again a few years ago !!! Only one disappointment... I asked you guys on your first website back in the day to cover California Dreamin ( a la Electric) and you never did... so still waiting !! 🤣
We saw The Cult at Toad's Place in New Haven once and after the show, Billy Duffy walks out onto the sidewalk in a double-breasted suit with TWO super-hot models on his arms. So rock star! 😎🤘
Matthew Ashman is the guy who made me fall in love with the White Falcon. His was a 1980 I believe often called the "thin switch Falcon". I also saw Malcolm with his Back in Black White Falcon on that tour, I was right in front of him and his had the bigger F holes and the metal badge on the head stock (like Neil Young's if I'm not mistaken) and also had the 4 switches up top. That guitar was almost as big as Mal haha. I didn't like it at first site, the big hollow body guitars I always up to that point associated with jazz players and Roy Clark on Hee Haw (also have changed my mind now on Clark, man that guy could play). But Mal made it look so cool and how he played at that massive volume on that Falcon was unreal, I've no idea how he controlled it without feedback. Billy's Sanctuary Falcon is a '75 and this 84/24 does not quite look like the Sanctuary Falcon body which really bugs me (hello OCD). The main difference apart from the truss rod placement is that in the shape of the body where the top goes into the neck on Billy's '75 Falcon it's more straight. Not so rounded. Issue a Falcon designed directly off of Billy's Sanctuary Falcon like Gibson did with Page's #1 and I'll be the first in line. That guitar is absolutely iconic and deserves it. And issue a copy of Matthew's thin switch Falcon while you're at it please. Huge Cult fan, I've seen them at least 6 or 7 times starting in '85 and a huge fan of Billy and the mighty White Falcon.
I was not a fan of The Cult during the 1980s at all. Then I saw them open for Metallica on the "Justice" Tour in 1989 and they were freakin' great! I mean they had that arena movin' and groovin'. Needless to say I've been a fan ever since.
imagine Duffy being a kid today and starting a band . He would never be able to afford an USA Gretsch. Think about it. How much the quality of the gear affected the sound of the band and creativity. He would probably give up after a while because his Boss katana crapped out and his Harley benton got a warped neck. My point. Quality gear is way too expensive these days and in most cases is not worth the money you paid for it.
He paid the equivalent in 1981 that you or I would pay today for that signature model. Yes expensive and probably still "life savings" level if you've been a jobbing musician for a few years but not unaffordable if that's your dream. My '87 white and rosewood Squier will do me though.

Worked with Billy - top chap.
Billy Duffy is one of the best guitarist and songwriter ever. Keep rocking!

I just sold a Billy Duffy Black Falcon I got in 2016. Incredibly versatile guitar. I wish it's new owner well!

YOU , Sylvain Sylvain from the New York Dolls and Malcolm Young from AC/DC are the reason why I own a white Gretsch!!!! Cheers Billy, I love you man.
"There's air and breath within a Gretsch"
Marketing? Are you paying attention? He just gave you the greatest tag line EVER!
Holy shit brother you nailed it on that one I want one of these bad bitches
he was talking about hollow bodies. And I totally agree with him
Billy is one of my favourite players and the Love album has been a constant companion since 1985.
Been a huge fan of Billy's since I was 10 years old and have grown up with him. IT started in 1990. Dudes such a nice badass! Thank you for the tunes and great guitars!
Billy Duffy never disappoints! Such a great guitarist. Another stunning Gretsch!
Him and Geordie Walker really made big body guitars cool in the mid 80s.
You spelled Brian Setzer wrong…
@@glengamble526 Setzer was earlier. Runaway Boys 7" my mother bought me in 80. Still have it.
This axe sells sanctuary 🎉
Huge fan since the very first time I heard Sun King. Such a solid, honest guitar player, always delivers the business in just the right way.
“Find yourself.” I needed to hear that. Great story and background of his experiences with Gretsch guitars. Seems like a nice guy with a creative and well-rounded attitude. Thank you Sir. I have a Gretsch 5622t and hardly walk by it without picking it up and playing.

Legendary Gretsch guy and I always love his sound and Love album... Richard Fortus and Billy probably my favorite gretsch players
If I had $4500 I would get one!
Now to go listen to The Cult and relive my high school days!!
Love Electric in the Sonic Temple, cheers Billy.
I know nothing about guitars but love The Cult. It’s interesting to hear what produced that unique sound.
Billy Duffy is one of my favs! He's the real deal...💚🎸
Always loved the White Falcon. That one is pure perfection!
Not sure the phaser effect was the best choice to showcase this amazing instrument. But it's Billy and he can do whatever he wants. Like the Chuck Norris of the guitar world. Billy's the man.
When Guitar Hero's are caught on film...Love this guy and love his Sig Falcon's Gretsch's... I will own one someday.

The fact that Billy played ‘Hollow Man’, I can watch this video again and again!🙂
Hollow Man and The Phoenix.... just pure ear candy!!!!
Can't stop listening to Vendetta x. Brilliant brilliant band.
Saw them on their latest tour, the quality of the sound of the falcon live is emense.
Just love the look of a Baldwin falcon. Wanted to buy one in the late 80,s,never found a single cutaway on the market......
Such a cool guitar, sound and Player! Thank you for ALL the music!
Well deserved!
Not just a great guitarist, but a really engaging speaker too. Great video!
Billy fkn Duffy...finally this has happened, soooperb brotha, i saw 4 crows nailed to a wooden post..they bleed upon a barron field...❤❤❤
What a Tone
£800 in 1981 was a shitload of money.
About £4500 now, so this guitar is still in the ball park.
Awesome Billy and Gretsch..😊
The Falcon Models are Fantastic......
Beautiful guitar.
A legend here !
"...made it like if it took acid and rode a Harley Davidson..." describes that era of The Cult well.
Also £800 in 81 is equivalent to around £3800 today - a fair chunk of change!
It's a beautiful guitar. Fender has made massive improvements to the Gretch line.
Billy is the coolest
I'd love one of these!
Still love the punchy and crystal clear sound of the "Electric" album, one of Rick Rubins (and The Cults) masterpieces. I will always use it to test any new audio equipment :)
Legend 🤘🏻🤘🏻
He needs his own guitar show. Interviewing and playing with other guitarist.
You are so absolutely right!
My Guitar Hero. Simple.
Man there were a ton of music shops back then in and near Charing Cross Road. You had Selmer which is a Chipotle now, then Macari's, Orange, Rose and Morris, Sound City and Top Gear.
Holy PHASER.
Flanger
Love it!
Geez l do not play a guitar but l am tempted just to go and buy that Beautiful thing, what a good looking guitar.
Beauty!

Had a white falcon in the early 2000s . Sold within 2 weeks, I couldn’t get used to it. Biggest mistake of my life . Awesome guitars
Top bloke.
Fucking legend
Guitarra sensacional! Linda!

Looks great
I would like to ask Billy what gauge strings work best on this guitar, and whether flat wound strings are recommended. Thank you!
Bella/Magnifico.🙏✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️👑
Okay !!! I want one !!!!
Billy boy you done good! White Falcons do it for me too.
The reason why I picked up the guitar!
beautiful git.❤
❤ великолепный гитарист великолепной группы 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Captain Haddock rocks !!
Make an Electromatic version!
Please no

😎 how cool
OMG!
Gretsch guitars, how are they still in business?
The Cult 🎸👌🫶🇳🇱
What amp does Billy play through?
Ian wrote the sanctuary riff
What happened to the silver?
must be 5 to 6K yes ? just looked on Sweetwater but they don't even have them listed yet, Peace !
Lemmy has let himself go!
they 'reverberate'
How about a limited run of lefties, Gretsch?
I liked his 1st version with the nickel hardware better
Oh why no silver hardware? Aren't there enough White Falcons with gold HW?
His original signature falcon has silver. I think he just wanted this one to be a more faithful recreation of what he actually had back in the 80s.
Good move on that vintage white.
Regular White Falcons are nicer. Not much special bout this one but i get it.
thru all that chorus I didn't get any impression of sound

i love Billy Duffy and the Cult, but Gretsch just looks too much like a cowboy guitar for hank williams, so i could never buy one.
Beautiful instrument 👏⚡️🔥
