0:32 “I play guitar in a band called The Cult”. Legendary player, epic riffs and the coolest look for over 40 years. The majority of people watching this will be totally aware of who Billy is and The Cult’s legacy, yet he still feels the need to introduce himself and the band in the humblest of manners. Just a brilliant and class act.
Not really-Lemmy used to walk on stage with "we're Motorhead and we play rock and roll"-a sort of statement of permanance .Just disappointed we didn't get a demonstration of playing Love Removal Machine whilst standing up with the headstock next to his shoulders.Big man city fan as well so he ticks a ton of boxes for me!!
Two of my favorite guitarists. Saw marr about a month ago in dallas ft worth. Haven't seen the cult in several years though.. did you ever hear that duffy actually played with morrissey before the smiths formed? A band called The Nosebleeds.
Theatre of Hate's The Hop, and Death Cult were my favourite Duffy era - saw them loads... and he it seems he never has a bad day... beautiful riffs played PERFECTLY EVERY TIME... EVERY SODDING TIME! Great guitarist. I've just bought a (cheap Electromatic) Gretsch and it is off the scale in loveliness. I've only been waiting 40 years.
This is Billy Duffy, he's my best friend, but he doesn't know it. With his riff, he made my body levitate, in the mountains, on the beaches, in the cities, and in other very special moments. Thanks Billy!!!
As a White Falcon player myself I really loved this video . This and the setzer hot rod Black Falcon are amazing signature Gretsch models. Mr Duffy spitting truths on this shoot. Keeping it real.
Billy and Steve Jones are easily the best lead guitarists of their generation. Billy is simply superb. The tone and his flow. Love how grounded he still is, 40yrs into the Cult's history.
The clarity and "breadth" as Mr. Duffy put it while he is modulating the sound is why I also love Gretsch guitars. You could still hear each individual note as he played. This was a wonderful video.
My first concert seeing them was 37 years ago at The Summit Houston,TX July 16 1987 Billy Idol and The Cult absolutely once in a lifetime concert nothing since has even compared! It was so great seeing this video his music changed me me as a person to this day. I can put on one of their songs, and it has the same effect as the first time hearing it. legendary in my musical influences.
Has to be on of the greatest youtube videos ever!...and certainly one of the most badass guitar players ever! This was an absolute pleasure and I want to thank Billy and The Cult for giving me chills at the Auditorium, here in Thunder Bay, recently. That performance was outstanding, and meant alot for someone who was ther from the very beginning. I was young fan way back then, now much oder at almost 54, but so glad the band carries on. What a beautiful guitar! What a beautiful person! Love you Billy, The Cult and Gretsch! I rock their drums too! Cheers!
Been a huge fan of Billy's since I was 10 years old and have grown up with him. IT started in 1990. Dudes such a nice badass! Thank you for the tunes and great guitars!
Can't even play a single note on a guitar. But I loved the cults music for 40 years. So would buy one just on that basis. Surely the guitar is a work of art and would look great in anybodys front room.
I discovered the Cult in 1986. Been my fav band ever since. I may need one of these.. 🤘💀. Billy and Ian, come hang out in Park City, Utah, USA. Rock on …. peace and love 🤙🍻
Malcolm Young played a White Falcon on the Back in black album. In the associated video the guitar was nearly bigger than he was. In later albums he stuck mostly to a Jet.
Never really been a big fan of The Cult, but I've always admired Billy Duffy as a player and a musician. He's a perfect example of a player who has created his own sound instead of trying to copy or "improve" upon something that came before. Also, you can't go wrong with a Falcon.
“Find yourself.” I needed to hear that. Great story and background of his experiences with Gretsch guitars. Seems like a nice guy with a creative and well-rounded attitude. Thank you Sir. I have a Gretsch 5622t and hardly walk by it without picking it up and playing.
Remember him from Preston guild hall about 85 or so. One of the best gigs the place was rockin'. He , billy, was refreshingly different and his sound original. Beautiful guitar.
Quite possibly the Greatest Living Manc, and I say that as a Yorkshireman. Great video, thanks for shooting this, Gretsch. Saw The Cult for the umpteenth time a couple of weeks ago in Manchester on the 8424 tour and they absolutely killed it - as good today as they have ever been. Sadly I can't afford a BD Signature Falcon, so there's no need to complain that they don't cater for us southpaws anyway. Gorgeous looking guitar, all the same. CFFC
Billy Duffy - I Grow here in RJ Brasil! A simple place and I know everythink this fantástic guitarplayer - My fav guitar hero - a big riffs, fantástics tones, solos ... visual! Man ... really fantástic! 🎸🎵🎶🧑🎤
I’ve been playing guitar since 86. Love the rock and psychedelic genres. Had the stereotypical guitars over the years. I had always associated Gretsch with drums. In 2019 the local music shop had a special on Gretsch guitars. All I can say why in the hell had I not ever picked one up before?! As soon as I held it I knew. Freakin incredible instrument.
I play in a band called The Cult. That all. You have your own sound; how many players have that? Fire Woman is a good a rock song as every made. God Bless you sir.
Congrats on 40 years Mr.Most under rated great guitar player!!! Been a fan since LOVE, saw you open for Billy Idol when ELECTRIC came out ( That show was Insane) and saw you again a few years ago !!! Only one disappointment... I asked you guys on your first website back in the day to cover California Dreamin ( a la Electric) and you never did... so still waiting !! 🤣
It is a stunning guitar. I only wish @GretschGuitars you could make a Bass version as well? The TP version is great - but just a bit flash for my taste - Billy's is just perfect!
$800 in 1981 is worth $2,778.12 today That’s alot of fish n chips innit For Sonic Temple Fire woman🔥 You will always be one of my guitar gods. Nuff said🇺🇸
Man there were a ton of music shops back then in and near Charing Cross Road. You had Selmer which is a Chipotle now, then Macari's, Orange, Rose and Morris, Sound City and Top Gear.

Unreal a one hit wonder band getting a guitar made for him. But what a song it was!
@@kevin6385 are you crazy??? One hit wonder???
Saw The Cult early 80’s. I was hooked! One hit wonder? Answer =Troll
This guy…just wow. LEGEND. That tone! A magnificent presence onstage. A real rock star.
That tone!
Boss Phaser pedal? Just a guess.
Billy Duffy and Johnny Marr were at the same high school together. A couple of years apart, but two legendary guitarists from the same time and place.
Two of my favorite guitarists. Saw marr about a month ago in dallas ft worth. Haven't seen the cult in several years though.. did you ever hear that duffy actually played with morrissey before the smiths formed? A band called The Nosebleeds.
Johnny Marr didn't go to the same high school as Billy Duffy (it was the bass player from the Smiths that did) but he did live opposite Billy.
Oh wow thx for saying, that is amazing.

I'm very tempted too. I bought Love back in 85 and it's still my favourite album of all time.....praise indeed from a massive Bowie fan.
This is Billy Duffy, he's my best friend, but he doesn't know it.

Hey, I saw them at the Music Hall when an unknown band Guns and Roses opened for them! Jesse C
Saw the same show in Portland! Yes, once in a lifetime opportunity!
Me too! '87 - Electric! 😁👍🤘🇦🇺
"There's air and breath within a Gretsch"
Marketing? Are you paying attention? He just gave you the greatest tag line EVER!
Holy shit brother you nailed it on that one I want one of these bad bitches
he was talking about hollow bodies. And I totally agree with him
The best marketing comes from truth speaking with passion

Been a huge fan of Billy's since I was 10 years old and have grown up with him. IT started in 1990. Dudes such a nice badass! Thank you for the tunes and great guitars!
Billy Duffy never disappoints! Such a great guitarist. Another stunning Gretsch!

Agree 100%, that guit is an absolute piece of art.
Yep! A Slash Les Paul too! 😁👍🤘🇦🇺
I have owned and played Gretsch guitars since 1985, they just do it for me.
Him and Geordie Walker really made big body guitars cool in the mid 80s.
You spelled Brian Setzer wrong…
@@glengamble526 Setzer was earlier. Runaway Boys 7" my mother bought me in 80. Still have it.
What a lovely down to earth guy.,...... Great band aswell
Worked with Billy - top chap.
This axe sells sanctuary 🎉
I just sold a Billy Duffy Black Falcon I got in 2016. Incredibly versatile guitar. I wish it's new owner well!

Congrats Billy! Well deserved.
Seen the Cult over a 100 times over the years. Billy is an absolute virtuoso genius guitar player.

Him and Rory Gallagher

I played the very first White Falcon that Billy owned about an hour before he actually bought it back in the early 80's!👍
(Tin Pan Alley)
Remember him from Preston guild hall about 85 or so. One of the best gigs the place was rockin'.
He , billy, was refreshingly different and his sound original.
Beautiful guitar.
Whenever I am down, I try to make a list of at least five things I am grateful for. I learned this in A.A. Why not try it today?
Huge fan since the very first time I heard Sun King. Such a solid, honest guitar player, always delivers the business in just the right way.
one of my favorite bands in the 80s and brings me back with so many memories. These guys were just awesome!
All the best guitarists love their instruments.
Legendary Gretsch guy and I always love his sound and Love album... Richard Fortus and Billy probably my favorite gretsch players
Billy and SRV tones for me are 2 of the best tones ever.
Ya, me too... liked this video to that degree as well. Made well.
Informed well. Choice things said we'll, edited well. So thank you.
Not just a great guitarist, but a really engaging speaker too. Great video!
One of my favorite guitarists. Great, unique style. Very creative. Rock 'n' roll!
Billy flashes the horns 🤘 at the intro. Total respect.
I love The Cult, their Electric and Love albums especially, and what a down to earth guy, absolutely superb
Talks so clear and normal , no over complicated waffle.

Just love the look of a Baldwin falcon. Wanted to buy one in the late 80,s,never found a single cutaway on the market......
Saw them on their latest tour, the quality of the sound of the falcon live is emense.
What a Tone
Super modest talented Gent ,Great interview
Such a cool guitar, sound and Player! Thank you for ALL the music!
I know nothing about guitars but love The Cult. It’s interesting to hear what produced that unique sound.
Love the tone of this guitar and Mr Duffy’s inimitable style
Duff, front row in front of ya amps. Pure Heaven, Pure Cult ... ✌️🤘🏴😎🇦🇺
If I had $4500 I would get one!
Now to go listen to The Cult and relive my high school days!!
