I love JJ Cale. Not just his songs and his playing but his authenticity and integrity to being only the original...who he was. I wish I could have seen him live.
JJ Cale is such an underrated & under-known-of artist I think…for being as amazing as he was…really a guitarist’s guitar player…I luv his laid-back sound & style…his voice was very unique as well…when I first heard the “Troubadour” album my mind was blown…the tracks were so different for the time it came out…nothing sounded like that…the grooves are so tasty…nothing overplayed…nothing too long…just perfect I think.
This couldn’t be better. I first heard JJ Cale around 1971. He became a big inspiration to me. I saw him once in a small club in Charlotte NC around 1973. He never faced the audience but I assumed he might be high or something but I guess he was just shy. Those three guys brought the house down that night. Great interview!
I lived in an Airstream for 10 years. Winter in Manitoba is no joke. Aluminum is not an insulator. After a snow storm I needed a mallet to bust the ice off the door just to get out. My breath made ice on my pillow.
I saw JJ at a place named PB Scotts in Blowing Rock, NC on a snowy night in Jan. of '77. We came out after a great, almost 3 hour show to 8 inches of fresh snow. One of my favorite concert memories. Saw some great shows at PB's starting about '76, the ones I can remember; JJ, BB King, George Thorogood, Nighthawks, Jerry Jeff Walker, Papa John Creach, Harry Chapin, Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Dregs, Leon Russell, and regional favorites like Snuff and Super Grit Cowboy Band. Hate PB's is gone. RIP JJ (&PBs). Thank You!

I'm not a great guitarist by any stretch of the imagination, but somehow I can fit right into JJ's groove on that tune. These stories confirm what a unique person JJ was. No surprise he wasn't into any kind of bullshit.
I saw JJ and Mark Knopfler perform together in December of 1985 in London. It was billed as Dire Straits as they had a big record out at that time. It was my first time seeing JJ as I had only heard of him from the Clapton covers. He was the most chill guy ever!!🎸
I check out most of the vids from Mr. Gibbs, and have done so for a few years now. As a big Cale fan, this video is my favorite. I soaked in every word from Mr. Kenner. Thank you!

I was pretty darn lucky to have seen him at the Santa Monica Civic when his first LP came out, the one with a raccoon on the cover. I can't even remember who the headliner was, I was that impressed with him. He didn't say a word. Just three musicians sitting on folding chairs plus the drummer, playing music that was so different, distinctive, nothing else like it. Then many years later, I saw him at McCabes Guitars in Santa Monica, about 3 times. Just him & Christine. A great venue, small & intimate. Very lucky to have seen & heard him in the flesh. He is missed.

I often watch the JJ documentaries he mentions, To Tulsa and Back and the one from the ‘70’s…. Long live JJ!!❤

This is one of the best of otis' too bad I discovered JJJ late in life but I had a friend from the Midwest. That I used to gym with that used to play. All these country songs taught me so much. I love those guys from the south
I saw J.J. Cale open up for traffic in 1972 when traffic was promoting their low spark of high heel boys album and J.J. Cale came out solo playing on his amplified acoustic and it sound amazing. He was there playing music from his first album Naturally I’ll never forget the tone of his guitar playing that night

Big JJ Cale fan here, and I love the thumbnail showing him with his Airstream. I have one from 1958 sitting near our house. (not in good shape, sadly.) I saw JJ Cale in ca. 1975 in West-Berlin, I believe at the Philharmonie, a very avant garde building with excellent acoustics. Only problem was the set was very short.... probably without an encore LOL.
I was a huge fan but only got to see him three times since he didnt tour much. One time around early 2000s, I met him before one of the shows when he was doing promo at the radio station I was working at, and he was very nice. He mentioned that he lived in a trailer in the Cali desert. I didnt want to come off as a the type of super fan i really was, so I just tried to play it cool talking to him. I did sneak in my old DAT rig that night and recorded his show though...Then I saw him one more time with Clapton a couple of years later at that Clapton guitar thing....Tony Joe White and JJ sounds like the ultimate to me.
This is really good stuff. I love hearing these stories. In fact, I can't remember a time I've ever enjoyed hearing someone talk about their experiences more. This was really, really good.
I liked the story about him mixing with different speakers in different rooms, and not letting the pressing people mess with the master. I've always wondered if Audie Ashworth had something to do with his "sound" of those early albums or what. Nothing else sounds like those first 4 or 5 albums.
probably i gave scotty emerick the doc. he knew audie had been to his studio and said the 8 track mixer from.those records was bought by a famous musician forget who of coursr j.j. had a background as a sound engineer and producer himself also
i love jj cale a whole lot more than i already did now that shirt reminds me when you see a piece of paper or empty sort of lol space that says usually in big text this space intentionally left blank which i joke is in my brain anyway i hope we get more people like these in our lives

Bill tells a great story. I've loved JJ Cales music for long time and loved that he didn't suffer fools in the Industry etc. "To Tulsa and back " was up on UA-cam for a little while . It was so great ! Sadly the rights owners took it down for some reason.
yes i had the doc tulsa and back tb show producer said he was going to have to lip sync he said no im a musician not an actor and wanted to be a songwriter producer not interested in being a star he also as you know had a,background as a sound engineer
My music and business partner Delaney Bramlett and I would visit John or he would show up at Delaney's Ranch. He was a fine man who didn't trust banks. John was Delaney and Bonnie's first guitar player and would stand behind amps and Delaney would have to yell JJ when it came time for him to take a ride in a song. Often time he would bring equipment he bought and didn't want to Delaney......we always laughed. He showed up once with an acoustic guitar duct taped picked on the front and the back of the guitar was missing....it sounded unreal.
