  • In this video I talk about why you should do it yourself (DIY) the brake replacement on your Porsche 911 (991). I initially wanted to do this at the dealer, but when I found out how much dealers were charing for a simple brake job, I decided to do this in my garage. It's a pretty simple job if you have the right tools, which I explain in detail in this video.
    Video Timeline:
    • 0:40 - Why you should DIY
    • 1:50 - How much I spent in parts
    • 2:40 - About the parts
    • 5:58 - Required tools
    • 8:21 - Additional tools
    • 14:10 - Brake replacement timelapse
    Follow up video showing the entire process to replace front brakes:

    Tutorial I used to prepare for this job:
    • www.6speedonli... (just be aware that the rear is slightly different than the front, especially on how the brake line is connected to the calipers)
    Videos I watched while preparing for this job:
    • How to change brake pads on Porsche 981, 991, 718, 911, Boxster, Cayman, GT4. Repair rotors Brembo: • How to change brake pa... (this was probably the most useful video I found. The process is similar for several Porsche models, including the 991)
    • Porsche 911 Girodisc Brake Job: • Porsche 911 Girodisc B... (this guy has spacers, but other than that it's pretty similar)

    Great video - A couple of hints - I use a steel pick to release the tab that holds the sensors in place where they plug in (it took awhile for me to figure that out). I regularly swap my OEM pads for track pads, and I just skip the sensors and deal with the warning light for track days. Then when I go back to OEMs, I can reinstall the sensors pretty easily and reuse. Also, when replacing the rotors, I've seen people add a bit of hi-temp copper grease between the back of the rotor and the hub for easier removal the next time around. I also use anti-squeal paste on the backs of the pads which helps too.

      Thanks for the hints Chuck! I'm doing the fronts pretty soon and will try the steel pick to release the sensor tab.

      Be careful with the anti-squeal paste, I did that one time and it literally got into the caliper piston puck and glued the brake pads dampeners inside the piston that I had to replace the entire caliper piston as the dampener would NOT come out

    I would say that the dealer does NOT always replace the rotors, they replace the rotors when needed. Normally only the pads are needed to be replaced. If you do some basic racing, you do not need the wear sensors, since you would have good control of your pads and replace them way before the sensors would give any alarm.

    • @cartalkwithcarlos1785
      @cartalkwithcarlos1785  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, that's the case for most dealers. But Porsche dealears won't touch your brakes if you don't do pads and rotors. At least the 3 dealers in my area are strict about that. It's nonsense.

    I have 992, and the rear brake pads have humongous weights on them. way bigger than ones shown here.
    I'm not sure why they are so big.

    Did you check parts prices at dealerships? Sometimes you can get better prices than suncoast.

      I checked the price for parts in the three dealerships in my area and they were either similar to Suncoast or higher. I also checked Pelican and other websites. Where do you usually buy your parts?

    Hi Carlos, can you comment on the electronic parking brake when your removing rear pads and rotors? Doesn’t look like the car was in service mode. Did anything need to be re-calibrated?

    • @cartalkwithcarlos1785
      @cartalkwithcarlos1785  2 роки тому

      Nothing needs to be done with electronic parking brakes apart from making sure they are not engaged. There are other cars that require going into service mode, but not with 911s. No calibration needed also.

    Hey Carlos - would you indulge us and post the unedited video without the sped-up installation? I would really benefit from seeing this and being able to pause where needed as I do my own brakes next week. I'm starting with the rears too. Thanks! Also any last minute advice before I do? Has your job held up? Any things you would have done diff?

      When I did the rears I didn't think a detailed (and long) video would be useful because similar videos are already available on UA-cam. That being said, you are not the first person who asks for this, so I'll try to record the entire process when I do the fronts. I already bought the parts and they are sitting in my garage. I just need to find the time to do it and hopefully the video will be helpful to others. The rear and front are pretty similar, but I will explain the differences so people can use the video for both the rear and front.

    Also, how did the job come out after you drove it? How did it feel? Did you do the fronts too? I also have 45% wear on my fronts and 25% left on the rears.

      I only did the rears so far, but my fronts are about 40% and I'm planning to do them myself when the warning comes on. The job on the rear worked perfectly. Never heard any squeal and no vibrations whatsoever. I took the car to the track twice since the job and it worked great so I guess it's battle tested.

    Hi Carlos - thank you for doing this video! I was searching the web for months to see if anyone had done a 991.2 and there were none - so I backed off doing my own brakes for my 991.2 base Carrera. I need to follow someone's lead having never done this before. I loved your intro but then you fast-forwarded through the job which had me cursing over here, lol. I need the normal speed version please. I think we'd all like that, it's the only way I can follow step by step. Can you oblige? or perhaps send vid to me by PM? By the way, You Tube likes longer content videos these days anyway so you'll get more benefit from those channel metrics.

      Hey Robdokwon, I'm glad my video encouraged you to diy your brakes. Unfortunately I already deleted the original footage because I ran out of disk space in my laptop. But if you look in the video description you will find a couple of links from other UA-camrs that recorded detailed videos of the whole process. The first one is not a 911, but it's exactly the same process and I found that one the most useful. The second one is also useful but he is only replacing the rotors and he has spacers so the process he followed is slightly different (also he spends a lot of time cleaning and polishing so I thought that was a little over the top, but depends how OCD you are :) ). There is also a link to a written tutorial full of pictures which is probably the best guide out there, but it's not a video. I'm sorry I couldn't help. Have fun with your brake job. Cheers, Carlos.

      @@cartalkwithcarlos1785 I'm most nervous about taking out the pads from the caliper and then how to position in the new ones. All the vids are hard to see in that dark area inside the calipers where they go in. Do they click into place, does one have to pry them out, etc...? Is it fool proof and it goes right into place? I have no idea. I wish someone out there showed that exact step but no one ever has or ever talked to it. I've watched all the vids. Also when you did the caliper spread on the rears did it expand fluid in the master cylinder reservoir? Some vids recommend turkey-bastering some fluid out.

    • @cartalkwithcarlos1785
      @cartalkwithcarlos1785  3 роки тому

      Excellent question. I did open the reservoir before I started and removed a little bit of fluid with a turkey baster. At the end, I refilled and closed. About placing the pads into the caliper, that's fool proof and they go right into place. Removing them is also pretty easy. They slide into the posts and there is a spring in the back that keep the pads into tension. You just push their back into the spring enough to be able to slide the holes into the posts and it gives a satisfying click when they go into place. There is absolutely no way to get this part wrong.
