Pacific Raceways Track Day, Jun 4th 2021 | Porsche 911 C2S (991.2) | Best Lap: 1:34.648
Переглядів 5173 роки тому
This was my first track day in 2021. It was Twilight Lapping event (starts at 4pm and goes until 8pm) on a beautiful sunny day. The temperature was perfect (~70F). I had replaced my front brakes the week before and this was a good test for the new brakes (link to video about brake replacement: ua-cam.com/video/zLvcT4-XNmo/v-deo.html). I also got a track-focused alignment (more aggressive camber...

I recorded this video last year, but never had the time to upload. It was a beautiful and cold day and I really enjoyed my time on the track. I wasn't even pushing and my lap times were nearly 2s faster than my previous best time on Pacific Raceways. I think this is because the low temperature helped keep the tires from overheating. In this video I talk about why you should do it yourself (DIY) the brake replacement on your Porsche 911 (991). I initially wanted to do this at the dealer, but when I found out how much dealers were charing for a simple brake job, I decided to do this in my garage. It's a pretty simple job if you have the right tools, which I explain in detail in this video. Video Timeline: • 0:40 - Why you sh...

@@cartalkwithcarlos1785 when the car is on the ground the suspension and chassis will never see the twist that was induced by him lifting the car that high on one wheel. This is common knowledge, if you plan to lift the car that high you need to do it in stages or the best way to do it is lift the entire front end or rear end so there is no twist and put you jack stands or whatever you are using on both side at the same time

    • @cartalkwithcarlos1785

It's not uncommon for a car to lift one wheel of the ground while being driven. The "twisting" of the chassis you see in the video is nothing compared to the stress of actually driving the car. This is also common knowledge. But if you are afraid of causing damage to the car, you can certainly buy another pair of Rennstands and do the same process but in stages. Have fun.

This time I have paid for an instructor to be in the passengers side seat of my 1986 911 Porsche helping me improve high speed driving. Thanks for your GREAT video. What made it great was all of the options I can view: speedo, outline of the track with red dot showing where you are, camera on your head, and the split screen seeing the traffic ahead. I viewed it from many perspectives like once I just looked at the speedo and the course outline. Another time the track ahead of you and the speedo. VERY helpful. I won't be driving as aggressive and fast as you but I will have fun (my car to TOO expensive to get damage; many exterior and enterior changes. Thanks for doing this video, really helpful for dyi people. Question for you, is it "mandatory" to replace the rotors when replacing the pads, or just recommended? I saw your comment about cracks. My rotors aren't cracked but there is a small lip on the outter edge of the rotors. It looked like yours had the same lip from the pads wearing the rotor. The new rotors didn't appear to have that lip, they looked perfectly smooth. My 991.2 has 20k miles, the pads are over 30% and does not get tracked. Looks like doing just the pads is pretty easy and quick. And cheaper

    • @cartalkwithcarlos1785
      @cartalkwithcarlos1785 2 роки тому

It's only mandatory if you are doing at the dealer but if you DIY you can definitely choose to do only pads. In terms of work it's not much different because you have to remove the calipers to change the pads, and when calipers are removed it's so easy to replace the rotors. But from a cost standpoint doing just pads is much cheaper. Have fun in your garage!

I have a 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS and wanted to install a grill kit of some kind but I am particular as to how they are installed. So far I have looked at Zunsport, Rennline, CustomCarGrills and the Radiator Grill Store and I have looked at some of their videos or those of customer installation. I have seen the Rennline's Grill Installation video but they are working on another 911, not my GTS, so I am not sure about my installation details. At the moment, I might just make my own using plastic grill material that I just received.

The front rotors had 25k miles and they were getting cracked around the holes. According to Porsche cracking is normal and you can keep using the brakes until the cracks grow to a certain size (I believe you absolutely must replace the rotors when cracks connect from one hole to another). Good question. If I had a trailer I think I would go with a full race compound.

@@cartalkwithcarlos1785 Hey Carlos, wish there was a way to DM through youtube but have no idea so sorry to hijack your comments thread here - I have more questions about the Cup 2 choice issue. Just want to know more from you about why your experience with them leads you to want slicks instead. I'm on the cusp of plunking down $1800 with Tire Rack for a set of Cup 2s for my 17' 911 for dedicated track use (have trailer) and most higher experienced DE folks I've talked to encourage me as an intermediate DE driver with a basic car (not a GT or track prepped dedicated car) to stick with Cup 2 or similar compound tire as there is much more progressive behavior at the limit than Hoosier R7s or Pirelli slicks. The race compound slicks will just fall off a sudden cliff at the limit and will also burn through their heat cycles quicker than we would lose tread life on Cup 2s. Yes the grip is fantastic but the trade off for folks with our type of cars is high. Wondering your thoughts on this. I trust your instincts and we are in very similar cars. By the way, I would be putting my Cup 2s on dedicated 19" wheels, not my OEM 20"s. I'll be getting a little more shoulder but still have same mm tread width (245 front and 305 rear).

Hey, no problem about the DM through YT. I'm enjoying the conversation. I'm not an expert on tires, and the reason I said I would get a dedicated race compound if I had a trailer is purely based on price. But I just checked TireRack and found that the Hoosiers are more expensive than the Cup2s. Wow, that must be a great tire! Please don't get me wrong, the Cup2s are fantastic tires and I strongly recommend them. After switching to Cup2s my lap times improved significantly because they are better tires, but also because they give me more confidence to push closer to the limit. They never get greasy like the PZeros did and you can feel when grip is at the limit. That being said, it's an expensive tire, so for the next set I'm thinking about getting something a little cheaper that I won't feel bad about burning through a set in a few track days. If you are in the cusp of buying a set of Cup2s, go for it. They are amazing tires.

I had to replace 2 Pzeros within 6 months of use. Pirelli pzeros are garbage and super expensive. I had to get the certificate of tire insurance from discount tire to cover the expensive cost of these crap tires

1:28 is a good time for sure. If you clip the curbing on 9C and then stick up close to the wall down the back (not so)straight it will help as that back bit is off camber. I'm thinking its that big understeer through 4 in to 5. I think thats a corner to "steer " with your throttle. It is an easy corse to learn but a great way to spend the day.

Very informative. Thank you very much. I didn’t know there were so many jack options.

Thanks for the feedback! I ended up getting a pair of RennStands by Safe Jack and I'm planning to make a follow up video showing how to jack all four wheels soon.

Did you check parts prices at dealerships? Sometimes you can get better prices than suncoast.

I checked the price for parts in the three dealerships in my area and they were either similar to Suncoast or higher. I also checked Pelican and other websites. Where do you usually buy your parts?
