This is great. Years ago I had the opportunity to see avicularia purpurea in it's natural habitat near a lodge in Ecuador. Her tube web was in the cleft of a tree in permanently flooded rainforest. Her web was like 6 feet above the water level.
I can definitely see an avicularia/caribena species thriving in a habitat like this above water.
A. Purpurea has been a bucket list species for me ever since I saw one in the wild, maybe I'll build a paludarium like this for one oneday.
Such a cool Enclosure and tarantula I really hope it works.
And my T just did a happy dance, so cute and amusing.
I was just telling my wife I wanted to move my mature female C. versicolor into a bio. Seeing this, I have a new goal

@@catalystday I had 50 specimens in my collection and I sold them all and restarted with c.versi and p.metallica I've always been curious about bioactive tho. Communal bioactive is my main goal with the Metallica's

Ooo I remember us talking about this under a post where you recommended a paludarium video! I said that I was considering buying one and putting my versi in there. Convenient for me since now I can see how it works before I make that purchase :D

I thought you can only ever keep turantulars in a bioactive enclosure? Ive never seen anyone not keep one in non bioactive environment
@@jimmyjeffinson176 Coco fiber is a biodegrable, biodegradable doesn't mean bioactive, bioactive need to have circular cycle in the tank, spring tail can't survive in pure dry substrates. If use pure coco fiber or keep the substrates dry long time doesn't made it bioactive.

I have my t stirmi in an enclosure like this for over a year.
Works really well as the stirmi loves damp conditions.
1 warning for anyone wanting to try this, its very humid in there. Even with vents on each side and lid. I keep nano shrimp and kuli loach in the water part..
Condensation can cause saturation of the substrate. Add a drainage layer ,and charcoal to the substrate this has meant no mould for me so far. Springtails earth worms and wood lice help keep it clean also. And are generally ignored by the t stirmi.
I also added a hollow tube in 1 corner that goes through the substrate to the bottom of the tank. This allows me to drain access water as it filters through to the drainage layer by syphoning.
This set up has been stable for over a year and 2 successful molts by the spider.
I did experiment with a fogger and whilst it definitely looked cool. I was advised it wasn't good for the spider. Any advice on this would be appreciated
Ohh i forgot to say. My tank is split long ways, water area is about a 3rd of the floor space with rocks and wood to provide grip for climbing out of the water. And by the way... T stirmi can swim.!!!

That is beautiful. Lucky you that your versicolor is a good display tarantula. Mine hides inside her webbed hide most of the time, where one cannot spot her. But if yours is, she is a perfect choice for the paludarium.
Mine stays out unless she is about to molt, then she will retreat into hiding for a little bit.
Great video man, I really like your build and I think you've made some great choices for inhabitants. Have you thought about Caribbean diamond T's? i've heard they do well in Paludariums.
This is great! I made a big bioactive paludarium for dart frogs and mournings geckos that’s grown out beautifully, id love to make a tarantula paludarium!

Great video. So I've seen veiled chameleons and similar in these at pet stores. The shelf thing they just let float on top of the water. Does it come with anchors? How'd you hold in place?
yes, it comes with a stand that hold it just above the water
I was considering doing a Paludarium down the road. I think the zoo med is a good paludarium. However because of the issues they have with the door locks breaking, I was looking at the Exoterra 36”x18”x36”. Turns out that Zoo Med doesn’t make the platforms for that size. Exoterra has the terrarium pans that could be hot, Krazy glued, or possibly zip tied together in conjunction with the platforms by zoomed, to crate layers for spiders to build their burrows. I was considering the approach to house my two H. gigas when they grow big enough. I think I better do some renderings to make that work. It would be interesting.

You should just put the waterfall on a cheap light timer. The paludarium looks awesome.
Awesome setup. Truly amazing. Also what about when the tarantula poops in the water? Like will that effect the fish? Or will the fish eat it?
I dont think the fish will eat it, buy it is a 4 gallons worth a water and the pump is for a 20 gallon tank, so it will clean it up real quick.
Do you prefer a front or top opening enclosure for full grown T's?
The water has some pretty big water movement which beta's don't like, not sure if there is anything u can do about that but....

T stirmi would do well in a high humidity enclosure, but the Paludarium enclosures are arboreal which is NOT good for a large terrestrial species. You can see me set up a bioactive enclosure for the Goliath birdeater in this video:
