Well done MCN, this is different from most bike videos. Great to see something out of the ordinary. Really enjoyed it thanks, and wise words from John - ‘there’s no prize money for being the first to the pub’. The riders who are really fast don’t need to prove it on the road. Top man John. Top vid. Thanks.

Take a moment to appreciate that this legend has *23* TT wins.
    Amazing!
Nice general advice from a really down to earth guy (though I’d hope most of it was common sense?).

McPint is a wonderful man, for a guy that has lots of talent and not one bit has gotten to his head. I hope he does what his heart and soul tell him to do whether he retires or not. Imagine McPint running his own Road Racing school. I wish JM all the best wishes for him and his family.

Check out the interview he did with 44teeth

    • @MrNatbatten
      @MrNatbatten 6 років тому +13

You're confusing arrogance with currently superlative expertise in his field, don't underestimate his breadth of experience, he's met a lot of great people as well as being one of them himself, he's not the daft ex cockle picker and bricklayer he, and some others, sometimes make him out to be.
His processing speed is phenomenal, he can set a bike up properly, he can discuss in detail settings with genius Honda Racing Corporation engineers with real expertise. He's worked fucking hard to get where he is.
As a fellow Northerner, he's only from about 50 miles from my mums house by road or much less across Morecambe Bay, I am very proud to have seen him in action at the bottom of Bray Hill at the 2015 TT, all the road racers deserve a medal, true gladiators but with total respect and dedication to machine and mental preparation.
I have never seen anyone ride a bike like the top TT lads, John is the most experienced of the current top tier, simple as that.
Also, he speaks his mind, you don't have to agree if he's just talking about life in general, when it's bike talk, he can't be questioned really.

I've chatted to him twice (admittedly only very briefly) at various bike events. I can promise there's no arrogance in the man at all. He's just a genuinely humble gentleman with a phenomenal talent.

MoveM How awesome to be a young guy sitting at a picnic table with John talking about riding! He’s so laid back I have a hard time reconciling the fact this is the same guy as in those POV videos where the bike is absolutely screaming around the course while sliding and jumping around. Hard to believe it’s the same person.

I grew up 10 miles from devil's bridge, from the age of 16 been riding those roads, I've never owned a car and ride in almost any condition. We really do have everything in terms of road racing and I couldn't recommend anybody taking a trip up there, stay in a bnb in kirkby lonsdale and just hit the roads all weekend. I didn't realise how much those roads set me up at that age, now I've travelled across the vast majority of southeast asia and new zealand on a motorbike at still quite a young part of my riding days (I'm 23) and I'm pretty sure those roads contributed massively to having the riding skill to do what I have done.

At last, someone who says it as it is. On public roads there's debris, street furniture, other vehicles coming towards you, Junctions etc. Far too many riders watch the road racers and think they can go straight out and copy their idols and subsequently get injured or die. Thank you John McGinness.

    Yep top bloke is john.
I have been through all that shit racing on the road when i was young and lucky to be alive unlike loads of unfortunate young uns now who are dead in their grave now through stupidity.
Its up to us oldies like us to teach the young ones to keep your cool, ride carefully and look after yourself on the road, because its too late once you have lost your health, there is no going back.
If you want to prove yourself race on the track against other talented riders and not mostly amatuers on the road.
    Good video.

Good one. A very regular bloke it seems, John McGuinness. No hoity toityness. And he is right. I was much like him at 17. Jeans, leather jacket and flat out everywhere. But on the road, if you want to stand a decent chance of staying alive, you've gotta use your brain. Though I will say.....Africa Twin? Meh! That doesn't ring my dingaling. :D

My Brother has the Z900RS -- he also had a '76 KZ900 when they were new -- and it is 'more relaxed' for street riding than his SuperSport bike. And that is the kind of street riding I also enjoy. Something around 75% of my riding capacities and my bike performance...leaving plenty of 'margin' for those Surprises that can happen...and being more relaxed, and able to enjoy the surroundings more, too.
I DO Track Days, where I am at full intensity... but not on the streets.

Crashed 3 times in 4yrs - was very lucky to get away with it. Still love sportsbikes, but don't pretend to be a racer on the road. Save it for track days.

  • @tgrey2555

Couldn’t agree more, not so much a lesson but rather mature truthful conversation. I’ve ridden for over thirty years, just got the triumph speed rs great bike but just sick and tired of idiots and chambers raring up asking for trouble to the point I’ve advertised it to sell it as I’m sick of challenges from juvenile riders and to be fair drivers it’s ridiculous. Sean’s me that I’ve arrived at this point, I don’t red line it and try and melt my tyres, I ride to the road and my capability and ever conscious not to endanger any road users and pedestrians. Yes, yes I do turn it a up a bit but only when I can see np danger to anyone but me. What I don’t do is take chances or mess anyone about and its riders like this that have got me to think biking perhaps isn’t for me anymore, sad times. Wise words John but frankly shouldn’t we all think like this?

It's funny but it makes so much sense that John McG rides so leisurely when on the public roads. His normal day at the office is a tad stressful considering he's absolutely spanking it through little rural villages and taking bends at 180mph+ knowing one wrong move could bury him in a dry stone wall....
When it's you day off your work, you're hardly going to want to do anything that even closely resembles that lol.
Not to mention, TT wins 23 - Man points = "Maximum" :)
Nothing really more to prove there....

Great advice about relaxing a bit and not treating road riding as a race circuit. Unfortunately this wisdom usually comes with experience. Little like telling a teenager to drive the speed limit because you don't know what may be lurking on the road or what crazy drivers might suddenly do. The question is do you want to become an older biker who still enjoys the thrill of riding? Ya, I am getting older.
