Yeah, you've got me curious now. What was your take on this movie? I felt the the majority of the story was an awkward mishmash on the Dark Knight Returns mixed with scenes from Superman: Red Son with some other comicbook influences as well.

    • @MAMoreno
      @MAMoreno 4 роки тому +4

@@pipebhart4272 It certainly draws inspiration from a variety of sources (including Superman: Peace on Earth and Superman: Birthright), but the tension between Batman and Superman is most akin to the comic book discussed in this video. Alfred identifies the theme of the film early on: "the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men cruel." Of course, the film retains hope that former "good men" can redeem themselves and return to the path of heroism if they can be shaken out of the dread that consumes them.

"World's Finest." I remember those from when I was a kid. One "click bait" cover had the title that Lex Luthor finally kills Superman! I begged my parents to buy it for me. I might have been 8 years old. (Circa 1957.)
Summary of story: Lex Luthor announces he is no longer Supeman's enemy! He wants to be Superman's friend. Superman, being the super dope he is buys this hook, line & sinker (as fisherman say.) Lex Luthor builds a space station, high above the Earth. He invites Superman to visit him, at the space station, on Superman's birthday! Superman goes to space to visit Lex Luthor. Lex has a surprise birthday present for Superman, wrapped in lead. Superman thinks this is thoughtful, since it would keep the surprise a secret!
Superman opens the lead wrapped package and OMG! It's Kryptonite!
    WHO COULD HAVE GUESSED?
Because Lex has trapped Superman in space there is no way for anyone to save him.
    Superman dies!
The whole world is in shock & mourning!
And then Superman wakes up from a bad, dream, with some lame comment like, "I shouldn't eat pineapple & pepperoni pizza before bed time!" (I am sure this was years before anybody invented pineapple pizza.)
I was so disappointed! Heart strings pulled by a cheating ending! I still think waking up from a bad dream is one of the all time worst plot tropes EVER!
(Years later, Marvel used the same plot trope in Thor comics. Circa 1972, Marvel had this long story over maybe two years, where for some reason, Odin was asleep and could not be awakened. Meanwhile his great sword was sliding out of it's scabbard. Ragnarök would occur when the great sword was out of it's scabbard. Neither Thor nor the other heroes of Asgard could stop it!
Most of the plotting of this series was fantastic! The action was fantastic! Every page of the artwork was a beautiful collector's item! And then the ending . . .
Odin wakes up. Says, "Oh my, I had a bad such a bad dream!"
He pushes the great sword back in the scabbard.
Then says, " I guess I shouldn't drink beer and eat pineapple & pepperoni pizza before bedtime!"
    WHAT?!?!?
Two years of my life and money WASTED on that CHEAT ENDING? NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
I stopped following Thor comics shortly afterward.
I was surprised to see that they lifted this story sequence out of the comics and included it in one of the Thor movies. In the movie, Odin actually dies and Thor becomes king of what's left of Asgard. (I don't remember Thanos. He must have come long after I stopped following Thor comics.)

    • @jimmya
      @jimmya 4 роки тому +16

They could make it all pay off if Marvel and DC agreed on the "pineapple & pepperoni pizza before bed time-verse" the darkest timeline that they're temporarily teleported to after eating pineapple & pepperoni pizza before bed time.

That sounds like a rehash of the original death of Superman story in the Silver Age. The setup's pretty much the same; Lex feigns reforming, shares a cure for cancer and other mankind-helping inventions with the world. Even the gangland buys that and tries to kill Luthor for turning good on them, and several times Superman saves him. Then the space station thing plays out, and just like in your story, Luthor kills Superman with kryptonite, making Lois, Jimmy and Perry watch before returning them to Earth.
News of Superman's death go across the world and, again, everyone but the criminals mourn. Luthor, redeemed before the underworld, brags about his success before Supergirl breaks through a wall, kicks his ass and takes him to Kandor. Granted, Luthor had an excuse on not knowing Supergirl would come for him since by the time Superman still forced her to keep her existence a secret, the jerk, but even so, Luthor should have expected Batman, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Atom, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman would come after him regardless. Idiot.
Kandor sentences Luthor to the Phantom Zone and Supergirl and Krypto take over Superman's patrol. The main difference with the story you read is here Superman doesn't wake up; this wasn't a dream but an 'imaginary story', so he stayed dead... sort of...

Glad you mentioned the "imaginary story" label they slapped on anything that obviously didn't fit the standard continuity. I think the reason they dropped it was the whole "it's fiction-- they're ALL imaginary" argument. It got so bad that I recall stories that looked like they would buck established continuity labeled as "NOT an imaginary story", only to have it either be a dream or a deliberate deception to catch the bad guy.
Thanks for the true origin of that panel. If I had to guess where it came from, I would have placed it in the Jason Todd/Robin era.
Odd to find out it actually came from before I started reading comics (late '59/early '60). That does explain why I didn't run across it in my reading as a kid.

Oddly, I don't think I've seen this meme more than maybe once. Fun backstory, though, and of course well presented! It's right up there with the Red Superman-Blue Superman story as being prime examples of what the Elseworlds series would later become. And hey, have you done the Red Superman-Blue Superman story yet? Not a lot too it, ultimately, but still kinda fun and they even revisited it when they made Superman electric. And there's another idea that has even better legs: Electric Supes! Of course they did it to kick up sales without killing him (again), but I missed the in-canon whys and wherefores of this really big change, and how/why it went away.

A meme sooooo famous, it was even recreated (in animation) in "The Return of the Caped Crusader" which saw the return of Adam West to voice Batman...sadly, it would be Mr. West's penultimate turn as the White Knight, as he passed away during production of the sequel "Batman Meets Two-Face" which was the official premiere of the two-faced villain/lawyer within the Adam West series and featured William Shatner as a very period-appropriate Harvey Dent/Two-Face...
Let's be thankful that they did, at least, manage to complete that film...☺
    R.I.P. Adam West

I received a 60's "Batman" comic, that my Dad threw out. "Batman" and "Flash" were battling Tuxedo wearing, white masked and white high top fast running gang of thieves. "The Flash" fell dead possibly in the issue. Any clue as to the name and issue of the book?

My favorite "imaginary" story is "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow", by Alan Moore. Of course, if you included the Elseworld's ones, it would be hard for me to pick. The "Earth One" comics were also really good, I loved the Green Lantern Earth One, it was such a different take.

Yeah, “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” is my favorite, too. It was the perfect goodbye to Silver Age Superman, as those were last two Superman comics published before John Byrne rebooted Superman with _Man of Steel_. I still think that, aside from Watchmen, it’s Alan Moore’s best work in the capes and cowls genre.

The biggest surprise here is that the image was flopped left to right! In the original story, Robin is talking back to Batman after being slapped. But reversing the image (if you read comic bubbles left to right, as we do in English-speaking countries) makes it possible for Batman to be interrupting Robin with a slap mid-sentence, and that's what makes the meme possible.
(Come to think of it, though, Bruce Wayne is usually depicted as right-handed, and in the meme he's using his left. That should have been a tip-off.)

I think DC Comics used this panel for another Batman comic. I remember when the Tim Burton Batman movie came out, there was a lot of merchandise for the movie. One being Batman cereal. There was this comic book you could get if you sent in so many box tops and paid for the shipping and handling. The comic book that came told how Batman became the World's Greatest Detective in flashbacks. I can't remember the whole story but it had that Batman was working himself so much that his subconscious started to try to trick him into thinking his father was still alive. Alfred is so worried that he contacts Dick because he was away for school, I think. Anyway when Dick tries to convince him that he needs to rest and get some sleep, the slap happens when Dick offers to help Bruce figure out who could be impersonating his father. Turns out Bruce's subconscious was doing it to get him to take a break and get some sleep.

It literally took me until today years old to realize Batman = Tony Stark & Superman = Captain America. I guess Robin & Bucky were like the counterparts but they went very different with those (partly I guess to have a difference between the 2 companies.)
I don't know comics that well though, so.

I don't remember what issue it was, but when I was in my teens (decades ago) I remember a silver age Superman comic where Clarke and Bruce swap bodies bristly and while swapped Superman's body is exposed to red kryptonite, after switching back Superman has a series of nightmares all themed with Batman's Rogues gallery. I'm not sure what year it was published but I want to say early 70's like 72-ish because there as an ad in the back for a new Ford Mustang retaining $5000 at local dealerships.
It's a short one off story but kinda fun and the art style was a nice held of both Superman's and Batman's typical look.
Sadly my auntie threw it away while I was a summer camp and I have never found another copy so it might be hard to find.
But if you ever find a copy, do check it out. It's super campy and light on plot but fun anyway.
