My Definition of Patriotism The willingness to participate as a citizen, taking risks and making personal sacrifices when necessary, out of a genuine desire to make the country a better place.
This was one of my favorite podcasts in a long while. I mean all of Jon’s podcasts are great, but this is a much needed conversation that I see America needs to have. The US has a complicated history and unfortunately for social media it really requires a nuanced conversation, which seems impossible. Like freedom for every man was and still is a big deal. However for Tomas Jefferson man meant white land owning man. But today it means something very different. That tension is hard to deal with. People can be good and bad.
Agree on the necessary nuance for many things and unfortunately, the online world and social platforms aren't really set up for that. It's all focused on speed, likes and attention. The more that path is pursued, the harder it is to dig into the complexities of many issues faced in the world today. It's now like trying to dig a path for a highway with a plastic spoon... a massive challenge as we've all come to see.
@@mariannevanderwel4022 the only thing I worry about is - What are we going to do with all the asylum seekers crossing our borders if the orange one wins?

Why is the most interesting, engaging, and even sane conversations happening today all hosted by comedians? Why are the comedians the sane ones? I put your podcast high on my priority list every week! Thanks!
Because you have to be able to laugh at yourself in order to remain sane. When you take yourself and your opinions too seriously, it leads down paths towards extremism and a tendency to become offended by people who disagree.
@@sleepingsealproductions Absolutely right. I think it would be great to have Jon in the House because he's MORE than qualified. And I think Colbert must have an IQ of 140+. He's astonishing most of the time. Trevor Noah, George Carlin, Seth, Kimmel...... there's a long list.

Excellent show with fabulous guests. I have heard Mona Charen before, but this is the first time I could see her as more rational & human than hard-core & right-wing. The combo of Jon Stewart and Lawrence Tribe is like the addition of a little cream & sugar to a bitter and very strong cuppa. The three of them together made it easier for me to accept her views with less frustration and more interest, even when I don't agree with some of them. And Lawrence Tribe is, as usual, a delight and a homecoming. He's like a welcoming hearth and a cup of hot chocolate on a cold and blustery night. 💙 Thanks Jon & Co. 😺
That's funny, I hadn't read or listened to much of Mona Charen prior to this cycle and this was the most right-wing I've heard her. Usually on the Bulwark, their criticisms of Trumpism aren't all that different from our own.
Listening to Mona solidifies the point that I don’t have the mentality or spirit to be a Republican but I appreciate her perspective and need for a sane Republican Party. Great conversation.
Love your work Jon! ❤ The way you articulate questions and openness with which you listen to others is just amazing! You speak whatever I always have in mind. Keep up the great work!
Re: Patriotism - I'm with you, Jon - 100%. we care enough to wnt o improve our nation even more, ever more. In order to do that, we need to speak truth to power.
What an amazing conversation! This is what it looks like when you invite the other side to the table for meaningful discussion & not commit to locking them up when there is disagreement. Sensible communication has a real strong chance of producing answers both sides can truly agree upon. Thank you for showing us this still exists!
Didn't even look *that* much other side to me. Which is surprising. Wish there were more anti-Trump conservatives, the ones with whom compromises were possible. It's not so much better over here in Europe, by the way. The conservatives also go far into populism and are also inexplicably successful given the fear and hate they spew.
The thing I love about John is how he listens. Like anyone, he has his beliefs, opinions, and biases, but he is very good at listening to others, processing what they are saying, and responding to that, instead of just banging on about his own talking points. That is so refreshing!
The one thing I appreciate when listening to this podcast is that you hear folks with different opinions being able to discuss, agree or agree to disagree and still show a mature respect for one another. I have never seen that nor have heard that kind of maturity from Trump. Just hate, fear and ugliness. How this man has been able to have a podium for this hate is beyond me. Let’s keep talking to one another, and show respect for one another and hopefully we may come out on the other side. Crossing fingers! Thx John for your voice.
Great conversation! Tons of respect for Mona and the amazing work they do at the Bulwark. I have to say though, I disagree with the narrative she proposed regarding the left’s strong criticism of America’s injustices. For me, presenting very difficult histories and seeking to understand how we can still see the effects today is an important indicator of maturity, reconciliation, and progress. Wouldn’t we be in a better place if more folks truly understood the legacy and patterns of American xenophobia/fascism? As someone who grew up in Oklahoma, I know so many folks who never learned about things like the Tulsa Race Massacre and the 1920s Osage murders. Discussing such events may disrupt certain romanticized/mythologized notions of our country, but ignorance of such events is dangerous. While these are bleak and horrific topics, I do believe there is a way to educate people on them in a way that also taps into the many amazing stories of American resilience, reconciliation, and incredible courage. To be fair, I think Mona would very likely agree with everything I’ve just said here, and I get what she is trying to say. There are certain elements/attitudes of the left I see that regard our systems as inherently flawed and broken, or even beyond the point of repair. The idea that everyone working within the system, even those trying to make it better, are complicit. Fully leaning into that attitude, there can be a point at which the totally unhelpful apathy and cynicism take hold. Sorry for rambling.
There are so many of us feeling the same about this wonderful discussion, and our exhaustion after having lived through a decade of trump-hate. We are ready for more of this. I am so glad we are all here.
I just want to comment on Mona's opening remarks about the left. I grew up in the 1970s when patriotism was extremely strong, and I have always been very patriotic. I am a veteran. I am also a liberal. So, I can't really say that I agree with her assessment. I think we are just more willing to point out instances where we, as a country, aren't living up to the standards we set for ourselves.I think we have a sense of community, and want to help those who are less fortunate. One can be extremely patriotic and also critical. If we don't acknowledge our failings, we cannot fix or improve upon them. Also, I hang the flag outside our front door every morning.
Thank you for all you do Jon, showing the country that we can still have civil discussions even if we disagree. Allowing all to have the time to talk without cutting each other off is such a refreshing thing to see and hear
Thank you professor for educating us. I hope from now on that people stop knocking lawyers- they are the profession that is keeping us calm and fighting for out Constitution.

That woman did a good job deflecting how she completely gaslighted all minoritized groups and suggested they are 'complainers' for acknowledging history. If she's so uncomfortable with the harm that has been done, maybe she should do something to help with the fallout instead of suggesting people should talk about it less.
Mona, maybe if your party would have been a little less blindly "patriotic," maybe Trump wouldn't be in charge of it right now. Maybe our entire system of government wouldn't be on the line!!

It makes me sick that when i see American flags in front of a house or on a car, my first reaction is digust. The MAGA movement has co-opted patriotism to the point where they've tried to take the American flag
I understand completely how you feel. In Brazil, where I'm from and live now, the same happened to me when the Bolsonaristas (from the cult of former president Bolsonaro) co-opted the Brazilian flag, claiming that if you were not for Bolsonaro, you were not a patriot or a true Brazilian. You are the best, Jon. Thank you for being the voice for us.
I’m so exhausted of the hate, racism and absolute cruelty of MAGA. And, I really want my Dad back before he dies.
I'm so sorry. Hugs.

Sometimes I just have to laugh when I think about it: My 93-year-old mother is a right wing radical extremist.
This will be my 16th time voting and in the past there were times I was concerned but this is the first time I have been absolutely terrified. I hope that this country will be prepared for the aftermath of the vote.
My Definition of Patriotism
The willingness to participate as a citizen, taking risks and making personal sacrifices when necessary, out of a genuine desire to make the country a better place.
I'm Canadian and I want to thank you all so much for helping me through this!
Me too, a Canadian living in Canada over the age of 82, on dialysis for chronic kidney failure. Thank you daily show and other superb comedians...
@@mariannevanderwel4022 the only thing I worry about is - What are we going to do with all the asylum seekers crossing our borders if the orange one wins?
Yes! Hugs. I'm albertan. And need the sanity dose!
As a Canadian please stop obsessing over the US to the point that you need help getting through it. Canada and Canadian politics would be significantly better if people were less obsessed with the US and cared a bit more about Canada
@@Gronmin hahahaha not obsessing just rehearsing.
Why is the most interesting, engaging, and even sane conversations happening today all hosted by comedians? Why are the comedians the sane ones? I put your podcast high on my priority list every week! Thanks!
You have to be smart to be a good comedian.
I needed this video. If for no other reason than to be reminded that not _everyone_ has lost their minds. Thank you so much
Not everyone, but if the majority has lost their minds, then democracy has a problem.
If we don’t get rid of the idea money has the same rites as a person and gets money out of politics we will continue to have these problems .
Thank you, Jon! Hugely nourishing, refreshingly sane. May this heartening conversation throw a long ray of light into the hard work that lies ahead. Wow. This comes right when we need to hear such thoughts expressed.
Thanks Jon & Co. 😺
That's funny, I hadn't read or listened to much of Mona Charen prior to this cycle and this was the most right-wing I've heard her. Usually on the Bulwark, their criticisms of Trumpism aren't all that different from our own.
Watching this made me wish I was smart enough to have gone to Harvard to study under Prof Tribe. What a wonderful mind and soul
Listening to Mona solidifies the point that I don’t have the mentality or spirit to be a Republican but I appreciate her perspective and need for a sane Republican Party.
Great conversation.
Holy shit, an intelligent conversation by intelligent people on the internet! Who said it wasn't possible?
Love your work Jon! ❤
The way you articulate questions and openness with which you listen to others is just amazing!
OMG……three of my most favorite democracy warriors! Wonderful people. 🎉🇺🇸
Thank you for a very fascinating, interesting and educational discussion. The questions Jon Stewart asked were all excellent. Smart.
Shoutout to your support staff! This podcast is fantastic thanks!
Love you Jon! ❤
Awesome! I so enjoyed that discussion, thank you Jon Stewart, Mona Charen and Lawrence H. Tribe. Vote Blue 💙💙
The team that put this together is Awesome!
Thank you. I have stopped crying for the moment. Absolutely brilliant discussion. I have hope.

What a learned conversation, what an uplifting exchange, all three of you! God bless you all!
Thank you!!! All 3 of you. Excellent discussion!! ❤
Mona, I really appreciate what you do. I am a huge fan of Beg to Differ. Thank you!
Over 60 years ago, I made a t-shirt that said, "My country -- love it or FIX it!"
The thing I love about John is how he listens. Like anyone, he has his beliefs, opinions, and biases, but he is very good at listening to others, processing what they are saying, and responding to that, instead of just banging on about his own talking points. That is so refreshing!
Such an important conversation. Thank you.
Excellent guests and discussion!
Thank you for the rational conversations.
I wish Mona would have allowed Laurence Tribe to speak more. He is a national treasure ❤😊.
This has given me the most hope in a long time. Thank you😊
Thank you for all you do Jon, showing the country that we can still have civil discussions even if we disagree. Allowing all to have the time to talk without cutting each other off is such a refreshing thing to see and hear
Thank you for this very interesting conversation. You give me hope!
Thank you professor for educating us. I hope from now on that people stop knocking lawyers- they are the profession that is keeping us calm and fighting for out Constitution.

When going for a walk to vent, inner reflection on your life situation, please remember this: Unplug and touch the Grass. Meaning: Get off social media on your phone when you walk and say hello to people you meet start a conversation... re-ground yourself to the real world.
What would parents of a 25 year old daughter do if she called and said she was bringing her new boyfriend home for Thanksgivings Day Dinner. She said he has a few issues but she likes that he’s kind of a bad boy. The parents say how bad? Well, he has 31 felonies with 60 more pending and 27 sexual assaults, 1 of which a judge determined was a rape, but he’s a great businessman with only 6 bankruptcies, but you’ll like him. Any parents with values would say they, we are going out of town this holiday.
😂😂😂😂
Thank you for an intelligent conversation that doesn't go off the rails.
This team make my day!
Where are you Jon? We need you right now.
No you don't. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps
what a relief this show was. several hours ago I watched some clips from Rogan/Vance and scrolled through thousands of "what a wonderful guy j.d. is" and my horror was overwhelming. then I came here and my panic attack is somewhat quelled. thank you
I want to hear more from Laurence H. Tribe, so thoughful, intelligent, wise and empathetic. What a cool dude.
I don't live there, but it's still very scary what's happening over there. It's utterly baffling that nearly half the population supports that guy. It's mad, everyone else thinks he's a chump
We feel the same way!
Appreciate devoting the time for this important conversation. Rather than a 2 min. segment on broadcast tv.
Great show. Thanks to everyone.
I tune into you for connection to some sanity. Thank You for your service to your country and the globe.
This was excellent, thank you. We need more Mona Charens in the world.
Jon, you bring peace to me. This conversation is what we need. How can we eliminate the noise and get back down to this?
Watching you guys from Brazil!
Another viewer from Brazil here 🙂🙂
It is so refreshing listening to this discussion. Conversations like this is so hard to come by these days. Many thanks to Jon Stewart for facilitating this. Kudos to the three young ladies. Nice job!
This show unironically gives me hope for the future. If we can have conversations like this on a larger and larger scale, we can recover from MAGA.
MAGA powers will not engage in a conversation like this because it exposes their disinformation.
This discussion is really great! Thank you Jon for moderating this memorable, intelligent and courteous discussion. You did a great job. I'm hoping that you do more of this in the future.
U definitely speak for me when u say aaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This was a really good one. Thanks Jon, Nora and Professor Tribe. Well done.
That woman did a good job deflecting how she completely gaslighted all minoritized groups and suggested they are 'complainers' for acknowledging history. If she's so uncomfortable with the harm that has been done, maybe she should do something to help with the fallout instead of suggesting people should talk about it less.
That’s one of the problems I’ve always had with her. Jennifer Rubin USED to be the same way. She, unlike Charen, has evolved.
Great discussion. 💙
Voted 💙
Thank you,, John Stewart , for having this forum
Mona, maybe if your party would have been a little less blindly "patriotic," maybe Trump wouldn't be in charge of it right now. Maybe our entire system of government wouldn't be on the line!!
Thank you for this, Jon. Hearing the varying perspectives of reason was exactly what I was looking for. I deeply appreciate how much work and evident love you have been putting into these crazy times.
i didnt think about it till you all looked at that viewer comment, but the first presidential election I participated in was 2016. Every presidential election I've been able to vote in, has had trump as a candidate. What the hell man.
Thank you for a great conversation, we are in this together
It makes me sick that when i see American flags in front of a house or on a car, my first reaction is digust. The MAGA movement has co-opted patriotism to the point where they've tried to take the American flag
I understand completely how you feel. In Brazil, where I'm from and live now, the same happened to me when the Bolsonaristas (from the cult of former president Bolsonaro) co-opted the Brazilian flag, claiming that if you were not for Bolsonaro, you were not a patriot or a true Brazilian. We voted him out in the last elections BUT the Bolsonarism is still alive in the country.
Strange. It makes me sick because of completely different reasons. Witnessing the military support that murdered ten thousands of innocents. Hope the Dems staying in power and can double their support.
