Some of the commenters have said, 'hey! why are these two reporters so calm in the face of such horrendous insanity!?' But I think, that knowing as much as she does and having it known it for years, it is just a very quiet acceptance of the reality we are facing. Yes, the rest of us are aghast at Trump's lunacy, but with so much exposure and in depth experience with her subject - she shows her depth of understanding by being so calm and thoughtful. That's her job as a journalist, detached observation. Now, the rest of us - we should be mad as hell and do something about it.
“Filter is gone”. I am reminded of when my doc, talking to me about my dad’s aging, noted that I should be prepared for his prefrontal cortex not working as well. This means loss of udgement, executive function, filter etc.
@@todow48 Biden usually got his message across, in spite of speech difficulties...his few lapses were explainable, and never those of lunacy, like Trump.
@@todow48 Biden showed the normal signs of memory decline common among those of his age. He has shown no signs of dementia, which is, as the commentator says, a dangerous condition because of loss of judgement, executive function, etc. Books written by psychiatrists warning of Trump's malignant narcissism and dementia have appeared in recent years. Not one psychiatrist has ever suggested that this applies to Biden - quite the opposite, psychiatrists have clearly described the vast differences between Biden and Trump. If you support the racist policies or other hateful ideas of Trump then have the courage to say so. Don't try (unsuccessfully) to justify your vote on some other issue.
@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401 Biden did NOT "get his message across." He routinely slurred his speech, stammered, lost his train of thought, was utterly incoherent, and wandered around stage when he was finished. But please, by all means, continue to discredit yourself by denying the obvious.
I knew a person who voted for Trump the first time and I asked him why are you voting for Trump. He told me something I never forgot. "i am voting for him because he is chaos and that is attractive to me. This person on my job caused havoc on my job before he left and was a chaos personality.
A head of state responsible for the health, safety and well-being of hundreds of millions of people should never be a chaos agent. We saw the effects real-time during pandemic. Death, destruction, desperation.
Having such a calm talk about the dangers of Trump is spine chilling. I am hoping we have some honest courageous people that stand up for democratic values and the will of the people. If taking away women’s rights is a preview of things to some I pray we can remain a free country.
What dangers? Democrats have already prosecuted several of their political enemies, including Trump. Isn't that dangerous? Why are you only worried about Trump doing it when it's his opponents who have already done it?
Listen, I’m a dem too but don’t worry, this is mostly hyperbole for entertainment & to push folks to vote. Nobody truly believes Trump is a fascist, or Schumer & Bloomberg wouldn’t attend charity events with him, half the country wouldn’t vote for him, & Haberman wouldn’t speak this way. We survived his last term, right? The US parties are very similar on everything except immigration & monetary policy, so just vote based on that & try not to worry too much. If repro rights are an issue in your state, you’ve got to take action at the state level, since SCOTUS already ruled that is a matter of state law. It’s deceptive for Harris (or any POTUS candidate) to run on that issue at the federal level. Neither party has sufficient support to get a constitutional amendment either to ban it (which there’s no appetite for anyway) or guarantee it as a right (which SCOTUS would overturn, since we can’t force Catholics & Muslims to perform these procedures).
The scenario I can’t get out of my head is where Vance uses the 25th Amendment to take power. Reproductive rights are just the start for these people. Some allies of Vance in the “Christian right” would love nothing more than to take the vote away from women too.
its a national embarrassment that journalists and the political media have failed so comprehensibly to scrutinise and challenge Trump and the rise of MAGA. iIndeed they have been complicit in Trump rise . the American political media is the weakest in the democratic world and frankly a laughing stock !!
Maggie referred to his "so called cognitive decline" in a way that made it pretty clear that she just doesn't buy it because he hasn't changed, he's just more like himself. I understand why she said that, but she's not understanding the situation. For anyone who agrees with Maggie, I want to explain that this is exactly what cognitive decline looks like. The loss of inhibition that they decribe is a manifestaion of his cognitive decline. The process of maturation is fundamentally one of inhibiting behaviors that aren't helpful or appropriate. The loosening of self controls in someone of Trump's age is a very ominous symptom.
I think a portion of his "loss of inhibition" is largely a product of his self-induced sleep deprivation. Consider that the timestamps on many of his most angry bombastic posts are in the wee small hours of the morning. How much sleep does the guy get? It's not like Melania is going to roll over in bed and say "For heaven's sake, Donald, put your phone away. I'm trying to get some sleep.", because they're nowhere near each other. Moreover, no aid is going to tell him to go to sleep and he wouldn't listen anyway. He IS slower, yes, and that is a very normative part of being anything over 50. But my sense is the sleep deprivation is amplifying whatever age-related cognitive changes have occurred. He certainly HAS become "more like himself", which is true of a great many people. But the "self" he has crystallized is the guy who is "boss" that tells YOU what to do, and takes no advice because, as boss, he knows better than anyone. It is a personality he has trapped himself into.
If anyone is in doubt, they should watch the Detroit Economic Club where he was talking about Elon being rockets down into perfect circles and then jumping to talking about Biden not filling the 8 circles and how they are beautiful circles that he misses. Dudes in major decline.
@@markhammer643 These things are not mutually exclusive. Disrupted sleep patterns are a common sequella of cognitive impairment. And actually, with people who are aging normally, personality disorders tend to get a little better with age - borderlines burn out, psychopaths get a little lonely, and narcissistic people are willing to overlook a few of the shortcomings they see in their kids because they want to see their grandkids. There are certainly people who don't follow this trend, and of course, even those who manage to through their entire lives without learning any wisdom whatsoever will use their most primitive coping skills when they are under stress. Still, though, most of our brain processes are inhibitory. His loss of inhibition is now pretty easy to see, but people don't seem to realize that it's not that he is waiting longer to put on the brakes; the problem is that the brakes have worn away. He's still got some, but eventually they will wear away completely.
It's very silly the degree to which she massages the edges. He's different cos "he's older." He's slower cos "he's older." He isn't as eloquent because "he's older." What does being older mean, exactly? At this age, it means decline! That's normal. Call it what it is. As to her characterization of there being "no massive difference," I would beg anyone who actually believes that to go watch his 2015-2016 debates and compare them to this year. The difference is stark. He's not the same dude. He's been wilting before our eyes since he took the Presidency; that should be no excuse for failing to reckon with just how far he's fallen.
Still sane-washing I see, and as for the information about his failings, why did we not get that in 2015, rather than multiple stories every day about an email server that turned out to be nothing more than mild paranoia on the part of the Democratic candidate about data protection. The "What Trump Wants?" segment should have been front and center of the Times coverage in 2015, and these people easily had the background to cover it successfully, but they did not.
We did, and again mental health professionals (225) have warned (NYT open letter) us about this monster - malignant narcissist, sexual sadist psychopath. An eighth grade coward and bully with the emotional intelligence of a two-year old.

Democratic process? You mean like when Democrats tried to stage a coup by fabricating a Russian conspiracy? When Hillary said Trump's victory was illegitimate?
I can define, and I have defined in the comments how much disrespect and distrust I have for Klein, Hagerman, the NYTimes, and all of our nation's mainstream media.
Normally, MH's description of how DJT understands truth, that truth is what he wants it to be, is called delusional. I do sometimes find myself screaming silently at _her_ for staying so dispassionate, but overall I’m glad she does. Trump is not facing " jail time" he is facing many years in prison. How can a so called reporter and Trump expert not know this or confuse these two things?
Because you don't talk about money in politics if you want to keep a job in corporate media. Even making the accusation of "your candidate took Russian money" invites the rebuttal "well, your client took Saudi money" or even "well your client takes money from the pharmaceutical lobby or the arms lobby or the banking lobby" and the latter sort of argument is not one that the controlling interest of corporate media wants happening in the open.

In this interview, I would like to have heard Maggie Haberman's thoughts on whether Trump would dismantle the federal agencies if elected. Will he replace experts in the EPA, FBI, department of education, military forces, and others with people who are loyal to himself? @@dezznutz3743 Maggie Haberman, like most of the staff in the New York Times is suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome. So her perspective is biased and warped by the delusion this psychosis generates in her mind. The slanderous claims of those that Trump had conflicts with in his first administration are taken at face value, even though many of these people, like General Kelly were fired by Trump and have a natural attitude of wanting to seek revenge against him. I come across people like Haberman every day on a social media site called Quora. I find there is a literal pandemic of Trump Derangement Syndrome among the neo-Marxist Democrats and the neocon RINOs like Dick Cheney and his screwball daughter Liz Cheney. and crybaby Adam Kinzinger. These people hate Trump so much they grow enraged at the very mention of his name it is a trigger rather like when one is put into a hypnotic trance and given a subliminal suggestion, which is exactly what electronic media can do according to studies of technological indoctrination. Constant re-messaging on media causes a habitual reaction causing permanent grooves of neural pathways. These induced feeling are also buttressed by constant contact with colleagues that are in the same system helping to reinforce these emotional trends in a group. This is termed, 'Groupthink' in psychological studies. The so called "dangers" attributed to Trump are in fact belied by the fact that he already was president for four years and never acted out in the way his critics predict he will Of course this is rhetorically explained in a disingenuous sophist manner by the introductory remarks explaining how Trump was prevented by his advisors from doing what he "really wanted to do", This concept belies the idea that Trump has a dictatorial bent, because such an attitude would surely have brought on brutal mass firings by a truly dictatorial personality. Jordan Peterson, a professional psychologist has accessed Donald Trumps personality characteristics, and finds him to be exactly the opposite of the opinions of these leftest ideologues at the Times. Trump seems to view tariffs as a form of personal tribute. He enjoys making foreign powers pay him - as he sees it - as a means of exercising personal power over other countries and leaders. And he sees tax breaks (tariff exemptions) as a form of bribe where he can buy personal loyalty and favor with other powerful people who can repay him in whatever way he chooses when he needs it, or finds a way to get something in return for his investment. Money is just a means to measure and demonstrate his power over others.
Since both these journalists are New Yorkers, I don't blame them for getting Southern California politics a bit wrong. For decades, LA and SoCal in general were deeply conservative. The reason Reagan became successful in politics is because SoCal had far more voters than NorCal, and those voters were overwhelmingly Republican. But over the last couple of decades, the demographics of SoCal changed and the last Republican to win statewide was Schwarzenegger, who was a fairly moderate conservative. So these right-wing guys were young men who saw their class' hold on power, which was total and upfront (the LAPD was notoriously racist and corrupt) slip from their grasp. They're frightened and angry and determined to establish the same minority control their parents had over minorities and the poor.
The Republican base wasn't just SoCal. It was normal voters in the Central Valley, way up North, etc. Not exactly an elite business class. California was reliably Republican basically until the 90s. The change in power from R to D in California has also coincided with a serious (and noticeable) decline in California's standard of living (see: San Francisco, basically any urban area) and in recent years a population exodus from the state as a whole. Newsom is desperately trying to reverse these trends and even seems to be taking a more pro-business tack because corporations and the wealthy tax base are abandoning the Golden State.

His dementia is highly concerning because he is losing inhibition (hence discussing a dead golfer's penis size). He has so much arrogance he won't read briefings or listen to any advisors. He lies incessantly, pathologically, endlessly. He has always been easily swayed by anyone who would stroke his poor ego, as he has all characteristics of NPD (narcissistic personality disorder), so Putin can play him like a fiddle. And he admires demagogues, he wants to arrest even comedians who joke about him. He talks about throwing out the Constitution, because his version of nationalism is highly authoritarian and dictatorial. He has no understanding of or sense he should preserve the Constitution. He doesn't know the rights of the president, even after having been one. He has no concern for rights of the people, particularly women. And he clearly has no understanding of what a 100% to 200% tariff on all foreign goods would do to the American economy. Lacking even a fundamental understanding of economics alone should disqualify him, but when we add in these other issues, we all must face facts: he is an avalanche in progress. And JD Vance is just as out of touch.
She was not a good choice in trying to evaluate Trump. She's the type of person to say that even Jeffrey Dahmer had good qualities, like no 1 realizes that at 1 point of his life he was playful baby. Lawrence O'Donnell is 1 of few reporters who actually describes Trump with no pull back.
You can partially thank Ms. Haberman for his rise, and now she cashes in on her "knowledge" of trump. Eveery interview should skewer her for her role and force her to admit and apologize. She acts like she was a bystander.. She was a MAJOR actor in normalizing his idiocy.
Why aren’t you screaming that we cannot have another Trump presidency. You need to stop normalizing his insanity…. Oh that just Trump, he doesn’t mean what he says. He’s a freaking nightmare.

Biden usually got his message across, in spite of speech difficulties...his few lapses were explainable, and never those of lunacy, like Trump.

Free country? The fact that Trump is a candidate means we’re doomed.
its a national embarrassment that journalists and the political media have failed so comprehensibly to scrutinise and challenge Trump and the rise of MAGA. iIndeed they have been complicit in Trump rise . the American political media is the weakest in the democratic world and frankly a laughing stock !!
Dudes in major decline.
thank for summing that up
@@markhammer643 These things are not mutually exclusive.

Great summary! Well said 👏
Old people become closer to their true colors....as the aging impacts sinks in. A brat as a child becomes a brat as an old person. Just start noticing.....UNLESS they have truly changed through out their lives. An angry teenager who stuffs their anger all their live (recking havoc on others when they blow up) become incredibly angry as an old person. If they don't do the work to grow up, or mature, or evolved....it shows up in oldness.
I’m consistently amazed at how different my perception of reality is from the type of people who read NYT.
That puts you in squarely with the majority of America.
Thanks for putting all the pieces together Maggie, what we see about Trump becomes much clearer.
In this interview, I would like to have heard Maggie Haberman's thoughts on whether Trump would dismantle the federal agencies if elected. Will he replace experts in the EPA, FBI, department of education, military forces, and others with people who are loyal to himself? This loss of guardrails is too much power for the President to have.
that's the plan.
Everything and anything Trump does is about money. I wish the journalists would do a deep dive into Trump’s monetization of the Presidency. Please include his family as well.
Yet, the story of Hunter Biden taking money for access to his dad is never mentioned in the press. Why does that not concern you?

Maggie Haberman set the standard for normalizing Donald’s behavior. I know for a fact that if he were to jail his enemies in the press, Maggie would be free as a bird.
*Maggie Haberman is a hippocrite ignoring that what she is claiming Trump will do is exactly what is happeing to Trump at this very moment, being prosecuted/perscuted by his political enemies.*

Peterson says Trump has great empathy towards people, and is truly concerned with healing the excess divide between the two parties. Maggie Haberman hates Trump, so her opinion of him is bound to be biased. Anyone unwilling to see this has the same bias: ua-cam.com/video/K8o6n-AVqMw/v-deo.html

A man of whims and rages … is that what you want?
it's not uninhibited, it is the lack of caring at all about what sane people think of him because he is a malignant narcissist . They love saying shocking BS and don't care what anyone thinks , it makes them happy . He cares only about himself and everyone one else is nothing .
43:00 Why don't you just say the oligarchs will be in control?
They're in control right now.
...because "oligarchs" sue poor people with expensive slapsuits - and the billionaire owners of several newspapers did forbid their employees to take a side?
Its hard to imagine two people more fully disconnected from reality.
Trump is so dumb he doesn’t understand that tariffs are fees charged to US citizens on good they import. They are not paid by the foreign country! 😅
Never have I wished more for a conversation to be purely speculative and hypothetical.

Such an important point that the media ignores because of the so called Goldwater rule.
Even the author of the infamous Goldwater rule has acknowledged Trump's cognitive decline and thinks he should be tested for dementia. To say nothing of Trump's malignant narcissism, which has always been present.
NYtimes - I appreciate that you endorsed Vice President Harris for President. I can't stand that Trump's image was frequently on the front page in front of flags. Trump being an insurrectionist should not have been treated like a regular candidate. The photographer Doug Mills was the prime culprit in this free publicity for Trump! Plus Maggie highlights access to Trump and doing so normalizes him - saying things like - "He is angry." Do Better!
I can’t stand Maggie’s voice. She is smug and has enabled Trump.

sadly, both.
They hate paying taxes, despise the poor, and will never allow a black woman to tell them what to do.
You ignore how propaganda informed xenophobia. Also, NY is diverse, but money allows for exclusion and distance from others. More us and them. Trump wasn't shoulder to shoulder with the general population of NY and metro area.
Yeah it’s such propaganda that our neighborhoods are swamped by migrants, many of whom are criminals. Go with that message and then wonder why you lose black urban voters.
And I love the Dinkins example that was used. An utterly incompetent, corrupt mayor.
This one reason why the Left loses so much. Because to the Left, calling out incompetent Lefty leaders who are really hurting people is unacceptable.

Thank you to the New York times and Ezra Klein for really underscoring what the world is in for if Trump gets into office.

The fact that you’re all obsessed with Trump rather than the US voters & the issues we care about, speaks volumes.

Hagerman is delusional if she thinks Trump is keeping pace with Harris in these last days of the campaign.🙄
This interview was exhausting.
