I heard a story that John Deacon, who was the bassist and whom also had an electronics degree, found a way to boost the amps so they were louder than they were for the other bands. Not only musically talented but rather brilliant overall. So they took that edge and ran with it. The rest is history. Considered to be the greatest rock performance in history. Imagine having to follow a band like Queen. May as well just pack up the amps and go home.

Not only were all members of the band gifted musically but they were pretty good academically. Freddie had a Diploma in Graphic Art from a London College Ealing. Roger Taylor (drummer) has a Batchelor of Science in Biology and studied Dentistry at the London Hospital Medical College. John Deacon(bass) has a 1st Class Honours Degree in Electronics. Brian May(lead guitar) has a PhD and a Doctorate of Astrophysics and recently worked on Stereo Imaging of Pluto at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Maryland. These guys ROCK.

‘When people come together for one purpose: to listen to music’. Joey, that crowd came together for more than one purpose. It was the Live Aid concert to raise money for the catastrophic famine in Ethiopia. It was a transcontinental concert, with 72 thousand people at Wembley alone, had all the greatest acts of the era, but Queen stole the show.

When professional singers talk about this concert and Freddie's command of the crowd, they talk about how it was like "The Nuremberg (Hitler) rallies with a band at it." And how "He smoked it!" You should watch the documentaries (both short, under 10 minutes): The Story Of Queen in Live Aid 1985 and, Queen at Live Aid - 20 Minutes That Changed Music

There's a story about Live Aid that I think I saw on some behind-the-scenes video. Apparently all the bands had to work with the person in charge of the sound board, who was basically keeping things turned down to 8. During the break before Queen went on, the story goes, one of their roadies sneaked into the appropriate area and turned everything up to 10. Nobody involved with Live Aid knew that anything had happened, until the first chords of Queen's set rang out and everybody's head snapped toward the monitors: what did they do?!?

That stadium is the old Wembley Stadium, a football (soccer) stadium that was actually fully demolished and they built the new Wembley - at a cost of $4 billion - on the same spot. It's a thing in England that you either expand or rebuild on the same spot, rather than build a new one down the road, etc.
Been to both. The old Wembley was very old but had an amazing vibe. The new Wembley is actually bigger (!!) than the old. It's like a landed spaceship and feels different until you're inside and then you realise the field is the same field as the old Wembley. It's crazy. It's like the spirit of all those games going back to the 1800s and then all these amazing artists like Freddie are still in the place. You need to go there Joey, you'll see what I mean.

You can see the pitch from anywhere in the stands at new Wembley, unlike the old one.

    • @chrisnsf4626
      @chrisnsf4626 5 років тому +2

Wow, I would have thought it would be more. Old Wembley held 80,000. Now about 25 percent of the stands would be used by the staging, but a full pitch. Fascinating! And yeah, new Wembley is awesome, but that walk down Wembley Way towards the Twin Towers was something else. Now even the new Wembley arch is hard to see due to all the building they are doing around it.

ChrisNSF The old Wembley stadium held a few more than 80,000.
I went to the Golden Jubilee "50 years of Speedway" world final there in 1978 and was part of a crowd of 110,000, was told that the capacity had been restricted down from 120,000 because it was an evening event.

I have been a Queen fan since about 1976. Have seen them live twice in my life and they are still the two best live concerts I have ever seen. And I have seen most of the big names. Warms my heart to see their music still being discovered and appreciated so many years later. Good music has a way of bringing us all together.
That said.... March of the Back Queen, which I call the older less polished sister to Bohemian Rhapsody, would be a great place to dig into early Queen sounds. Innuendo, a later track. is Queen doing what Queen does best. So as I said in another of your video's, Those 2 songs really encompass the Queen sound. Honestly, take an afternoon and review an album at a time. Rarely a weak song in their entire catalog.

What makes this performance extra special is that, at that time, Queen was considered a band who were past their prime. Live Aid was a dual-venue benefit concert to raise funds for relief of the ongoing Ethiopian famine. And the line-up in both the UK and US was absolutely stellar (also other countries were inspired to held similar concerts that day).
They played right after U2 and the rest of the line-up included artists such as Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Sting, Dire Straits and many other great names.
Nobody expected Queen to deliver all that much. But they did, the stole the show that day. Bryan May (the guitarist) would later go on record to say that it was all down to Freddie Mercury. He thought of a way to squeeze their biggest hits into the 25 minute time frame. And when they started Freddie captured not only the entire stadium, but everyone around the world watching on the television, from the first note they played till the last.
It's considered to be one of the greatest live performances in history by fans and critics alike.
I highly recomend you watch the entire show (-:

Having lived in the US for 10 years it still surprises me how little some Americans know that a significant part of their background music to sport, politics and popular culture comes from a band from my homeland that once ruled the world and performed to gigantic crowds. Queen were the best band on earth and Mercury was the greatest frontman ever. If you weren't smiling at one of their live shows you gasping at the extraordinary talent in front of you. Over 30 years since Mercury has performed on a stage people are discovering Queen's greatness on UA-cam again and it's about time. Four people and (in later years) an extra keyboard player made you believe there was a hidden orchestra and a choir hidden from view in Somebody to Love when it was just Mercury and the band. When something was impossible to replicate like the mid-part of Bohemian Rhapsody they walked off stage and played the tape and returned when they could deliver part 3 with just them. Their sound was heard across the world and Mercury really was universally loved in the UK and Europe when he died.

The interviews with other performers from that day, the biggest stars in the world, were great. As you can see, Queen were slotted early in the day as they hadn't had a hit in a year or two. And then they unleashed 20 minutes of show stealing anthems and they were all like, oh crap, I forgot they had all those killers in their back pocket and a good many more. They also forgot that Queen was one of the world's most ferocious live bands, just incredible players. I've been a huge Queen fan since I was a kid in the '70s and a big fan of their early music which is a lot heavier than what they became famous for. At the end of the tour for their third album, they'd released Bohemian Rhapsody and filmed two Christmas concerts for their fans in London, England and cut them together for TV. They became known as the Legendary Concert, with good reason. They tear the house down, I'd love to see your reaction. www.dailymotion.com/video/x1vwngv

Joey. I have seen various reviews from various posters. I am so happy that so many who may have more exposure to other genres have embraced Queen and appreciate the groups legendary talent. Having said that, I especially enjoy your reactions. I see how you become immersed in their music. I still get chills listening to them and when I watch your reactions, it reminds me of how I felt when I saw them live in the 70's in Toronto. Thank you.

Freddie stops, and has that whole ginormous crowd chanting, "WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK YOU!"

Freddie Mercury is the G.O.A.T.! He's a contender for world's greatest entertainer. He was the whole package: a singer with a 4 octave range and a rare vibrato (identified by scientific study!), a gifted songwriter, a great instrumentalist, a charismatic performer with a fuck-ton of swagger who loved to give his all for his fans... and yet, he was also a humble, humorous, and good person, out of the limelight. One who is loved and missed by many people who were close to him.

Here is a song you could listen too, "The show must go on" by queen, written by Brian May their guitarist and sung by freddie, one of the last songs he sung before he died. Brian said this just before frieddie recorded it: "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' - vodka down - and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal."

The movie is coming out in Nov called Bohemian Rhapsody. Played by Rami from Mr. Robot. Just saw Ann interview w him where he was told to submit a tape of him singing for remainingmembers of Queen to watch. He did. Then few days later told tomedt up w film people and Queen. He assumed they’d watched it. No. Imagine having to sing close enough to Freddie Mercury for Queen to approve. And then to have to sit there while they watch n hear you. Obviously did well enough. He really looks like gives amazing performance.
