NW army Finnish Jaeger battalion here. Saw your thumbnail and decided to check this one out. After all Queen was one of those bands that you pretty much heard it many times a week from radio if you were born in 70's or 80's. Great band, still every now and then i find myself listening these tunes and singing along. Not in public tho. Try singing this in a bus, they'd throw you out on a curb... lol

Queen had rehearsed all week for this concert and had 21 minutes down to 2 seconds. They took this seriously and no one else really did. Queen were pros down to the way they did their bows There are many huge stars and many with more awards than Queen, but no one can argue that Freddie always had the audience eating out of their hands. People came out so happy and truly had a great time, what else is there in music, nothing. RIP Freddie you are a true legend and god knows you a never boring.

    • @decodolly1535

They did not go over the alloted time. There was a 'traffic light' system on the stage to tell performers how much time they had. You can see the lights on the stage behind Freddie at the end of the set - they go red as Freddie gives the signal to close We are the Champions. Queen's timing was spot on.

It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
“Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.”

I was pondering the other day (now aged 51) that 99% of the brilliance of Queen happened in the minority, first twenty years of my life. A remarkable musical achievement for these guys to have compressed so much, from "Seven Seas of Rhye", through to "Show Must Go On", every damn note and lyric crafted, in so little time. Now almost 32 years after the passing of this great craftsman, the material still holds its power. His voice and talent is sorely missed. What else might we have had, both operatic and rock, from him in that lost time?

I was there, yes I am that old, one of 72,000 at the old Wembley stadium. A very hot, long day. Started at noon in the UK and went till around 10:30pm. The ticket was £25, which in 1985 was really pricey, but £20 was a "donation" to the Ethiopian famine relief - which was the point of the whole concert. I think the next act in the UK after them was David Bowie. It wasn't directly after, as they tended to flipflop between the stage in Philadelphia, who came into the show later than noon UK time and kept going after the UK finished. Some of the acts were pretty poor, in that they didn't get the brief and played new stuff or just messed around for 20 minutes. This clip is making the rounds at the moment, but cuts off the end of Champions, so hopefully people will find the complete one again. Also, have a look at the separate number, done at the end of the whole show to cover while the stagehands were moving equipment for McCartney, called Is This the World We Created, very different with just Freddie and Brian. Years later, looking at video of the concert I noticed how special the Queen set was, in that the press stopped taking pictures of the band and was watching and taking pictures of the audience, many not Queen fans. Shows the power of Freddie and the band to engage an audience. Thanks for the memories, great reaction!

I wasn't there, was over in the U.S., but I and my cousins were able to catch this and few other performances on the broadcast when we were kids. Not being able to see Queen with all 4 of their original members live in person in concert is the one true regret I have in my life, even if they had stopped performing them due to Freddie's illness by the time I was interested in actually going to them. Having had the chance to see the broadcast WHEN it happened is the next best thing that could have happened, and there were a few times when I was younger that I caught partial rebroadcasts of their concerts audio from a radio station or two. Queen is and was the best there ever was and will be in my opinion overall, I mean sure I have a favorite song here and there from other groups and artists, but with Queen, I can listen to every song of theirs all day every day. But this performance always will have a special place above everything thing else Queen in my heart and soul for the rest of my life.

This is the high water mark by which all other live performances are measured. Occasionally come close to in the rarest of circumstances (Nightwish at Wacken 2013 for example) but never, ever bettered. "We are the Champions" for me is the greatest song of all time. Compositionally brilliant (the switch from Cm to Eb major as the lyrics get more positive in the build up to the chorus is simple but absolute genius), lyrically powerful, and it's ability to bring thousands of people together as one is unmatched. And this was it's best performance of it because, as others have pointed out, this was not a Queen audience. And yet you could hear so many of them singing along. An immortal monument to the greatest frontman of all time.

Live Aid was a duel venue festival organized to raise money for the victims of a 2-year famine in Ethiopia. It opened in Wembley Stadium around noon and about 5 hours later, the second venue at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia began. It was broadcast worldwide by 13 satellites to over 1.3 Billion people. There were over 65 acts that performed and Queen stole the show.
Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. heard it said as Bowie passed Freddie to do his set he simply said ' Bastards ' and laughed.... I definitely know Elton stormed In to queens trailer and shouted ' You Bastards stole the show ' which I love .

First I have to say I have watched at least 100 reactions to this concert and this was the best and most fun I have ever seen! Kudos!! Second, there are other versions that show the emotional ending to We Are The Champions! Here is one: ua-cam.com/video/D4DbvPjpKgo/v-deo.html Live Aid was a worldwide concert to raise funds for a famine in Africa. There were live shows in London at Wembley and also in Philadelphia. Broadcast to billions around the world! The amazing part for Queen is that they weren't even listed on the original set of groups to perform. The tickets were sold out BEFORE Queen signed on, so this wasn't a strictly Queen crowd. Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Elton John, Sting, U2, along with many others performed. The other bands watched monitors backstage but when they HEARD the crowd during Queen they were amazed. David Bowie said "how do I follow that?"! Queen returned to the stage that night at 9:48 to sing one last song, really just Freddie and Brian, Is this the World We Created. It was amazing also! ua-cam.com/video/riwDo7_GxjM/v-deo.html

Everybody in the band played at least 3 instruments not just Freddie. Freddie wrote Little things of love in Honor to Elvis in 6 minutes in a bath tub playng only 3 strings because i had to raise the guitar away from the water!

Not to be nitpicking, but they did one extra concert after Wembley, in Knebworth, a few days later. Wembley had been sold-out so quickly, they decided the fans wanted more.

I was fortunate enough to have been at live aid and had seen queen on concert 1982. UNBELIEVABLE! And you are quite right......there will never be another Freddie Mercury. And at the age of 65, I still rock to Queen and all the other outstanding artist of the time. Now I have grandchildren who visit and ask me to play Queen as loud as possible 😂

Love watching your reaction vids. I'm a 71 year old guy from the UK, and I was lucky enough to be at this concert. I was 6 rows back from the stage, standing next to the guy with the girl on his shoulders. I've seen many live bands over the years, including Zeppelin (7 times), but I can honestly say this was the greatest live performance I've ever witnessed. I still get goosebumps watching my 32 year old self rockin out with the rest of the crowd. Keep up the great work mate.
