What are the odds - I’ve even been to a football game once in my life and I STILL didn’t get to hear this song until now! Clearly a “Freddie” song, it’s gracious, empowering, and oh-so-rewarding to sing along!

Fun fact (well not so much fun) but Freddie was sick at this show which is why his voice occasionally cracks. Even Freddie singing while he's sick is better than most singers at their healthiest.
There will never ever be another Freddie Mercury, even though I never got to see them live (my husband saw them 5 times before we met) I consider myself blessed to have lived in a world with Freddie. I'm sure he's looking down at us all with a smile, and an extra smile for you Amy ❤

    • @incamoran9532

Yes, Freddie was sick, so it could be said that this is Freddie on a bad day LOL. However, the way Roger stepped up with his vocals to do the high bits while Freddie went low is yet another testament to how tight the band was. If there was a teeny lapse somewhere (as if that were a common thing in Queen performances - pffft) someone else would cover it and, for the larger part, no one knew the difference and the song didn't suffer. I do hope that, at some point, Amy gets to view the entire Queen at Live Aid set, including the acoustic encore by Brian and Freddie of Is This the World We Created.

@incamoran9532 I never thought of that! Freddie on a bad day truly is better than others at their best 😆

Seen them twice, big fan, and yes it is very tough to sing, I gave it a crack a few years ago (ua-cam.com/video/azOMSeJWaZs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=KieranQuinnMusic) and was glad to get to the end.
Freddie would do a 2-3 hr show THEN sing it.
Mercury was very clever, for the two lines at the end of the chorus ('We Are The Champions, We Are The Champions...no time for losers cause We Are The Champions'), he used an old melody/chant everyone used as a kid, remember? when making fun of anyone who failed, there were no words, just Na na - na na na with the same melody.

@@incamoran9532 Freddie sang all of the highest notes on this version, up C5 in chest voice. This is one of the best live versions of We Are The Champions. The original song does have harmony on the chorus, it was always done this way. Freddie was sick but luckily he did not have to do a 2 hour show at Live Aid.

@JosephHuntelvisnspiders Thank you for the link, you sound amazing! And having a full backup band like that? Chef's kiss! That is not an easy song to sing! My band does originals with an occasional cover song, we're a rock band so we did Tie Your Mother Down, as a female singer I prefer doing songs sung by male singers, it's much more fun lol. I only have songs we've recorded, no real video like yours. You've got a great voice and the stage presence to back it up. Thank you for sharing! 👏👏👏👏♥️

Freddie's track was more self reflective than Brian's song. But brilliant. Both tracks were considered a double A side, hence why I said I have often heard "We Will / Champions" played back to back on classic rock radio.
In 1978, the hipster music critics accused Queen of being Fascist because of this song, but they missed the point, when the band stated 'We', they weren't talking about themselves, but everyone, it's a song for every outsider who has been dismissed or treated like losers...if you never give up, you are never a loser. Queen never really fit in during their days, so they got it better than others.

I have always thought in my imaginary worlds, that if I had to present to Mozart a piece that represents our popular music from the 20th century without being completely alien to his universe, with that very 'Mozartian' flair, 'We are The Champions' would be the perfect ambassador for that!

A doctor told Freddie Mercury not to sing on that date in that show because he had a serious problem with his throat. Mercury considered it a great opportunity to perform in the same way and that recital is considered one of the most important of his career due to the impact it had on the audience. Although he has errors as a result of his severe illness in his throat, it was compensated by the attitude and management of the stage. a true brave man full of talent, commitment and passion.

One day Amy, you will be able to put this on UA-cam... Brian stated that he is very angry because of those blockings...
Furthermore, at that life performance, Freddie was not well... he was advised by his doctor not to sing at all because of the inflammation in his throat... the fact that he did it anyway speaks volumes about the character he was... so sad we don't have him still around us... such a loss.
We will rock you and Champions complete each other... that is the reason why they are cut so close at the record. You should really hear them front to back... you will realise that the simplisity of Rock you is just a prelude to the complex Champions... one is no less to the other, they serve another purpose....

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it or identified the fact, but the live version was at an all-day charity concert where loads of different bands had 20 minutes or so to play whatever they wanted to the assembled crowd. Queen came on in the middle of the afternoon (they'd been late in confirming their attendance and all of the "biggest slots" towards the end had already been allocated, but Queen realising it wasn't about them, it was about raising money for starving Africans, took what they were given without arguing -- something that other big names wouksnt have accepted) and played what is considered to be one of the greatest live performances in modern pop/rock music. And it wasnt even to their own dedicated fans! Performing like that to their own fans at their own concert is one thing, but when it's not "their" audience (although it was by part way through, and definitely by the end) is something else!

Am I missing something. Has Queen sold "We are the Champions" to someone else and those people are enforcing copyright laws. If so I fear that down the road Queen and Freddie will not be as widely available through the "Reaction" channels we all enjoy. New generations need to be introduced to what "real" music is, specifically Queen. I hope Freddie gets to spread his magic for centuries.

I try to make sure I stop by and see what she has to offer for the day.
Anyway, this announcement right here, with her and our collective frustration with UA-cam, and copyright nonsense, especially if a song is being used as a TEACHING tool, FINALLY enticed me to join your Patron page, and I'm happy that I did.
Keep up your great work, Amy 🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶

Thank you both for sharing the entire reaction on Patreon. I never thought i would find someone in your situation, Amy. I am fascinated about your lack of exposure to Pop culture in general. Not that it is a bad thing per se, because the classical world provides you with beauty that i believe is good for your mind if one chooses to focus on it 24/7. But still, your case is extreme in the sense that you never heard the names or even the choruses of some of the most recognizable songs in the western world regardless of genre.
Even Montserrat Caballe has heard of Freddie because her kids played his music :-) , but i have to assume that you don’t/didn’t watch much tv or went to the movies. As i said, fascinating!
I would love to see your channel include other genres, because there are many Pop artists , for example, who are essential to the Pop culture of witch rock is a part of. Artists like ABBA, George Michael, and Michael Jackson, to name a few. Meaning that the artists you’re reacting to didn’t exist in a vacuum. They were part of a culture that inspired them in their own individuality, while at the same time shaping the musical pop culture of their time. You will hear this evolution in sound when you get to react to Queen in the 80’s, when they produced some of the biggest pop anthems of their time.
With regards to the videos being blocked, i believe it has to do with the fact that you play the full song uninterrupted. One idea is to record your reaction without interruptions, and then insert about three pauses in the song to pitch the patreon and the coffee pages. I’ve seen reactors do this in the past to prevent them having to pause the song several times, to bypass the algorithm and at the same time enjoying their song first time uninterrupted. I believe they had good results with this technique
Cheers to you and Vlad, and all the success for both of you.

this is a wildly entertaining channel, but only because you are able to make learning fun. with that in mind, this is firstly, an educational channel, and im almost positive there are legal fair use consessions for disecting and disseminating media for educational purposes.
also, their sole concern is financial, no doubt...but who are they hurting but themselves? isnt this positive advertising of a property, that may drive sales, even if only a small amount? and that doesnt take into account that its just bad pr to stymie small youtubers who may be making an extra buck that your billionaire fingers didnt get a taste of first.
she knows you own this, but she isnt putting on a full concert of your property, shes discussing and educating people about an art form with the help of a song that belongs to the people in spirit just as much as it belongs to your coffers in law

To be fair, the whole 'You Never Walk Alone' story seems to have been a bit of a retcon to make the two songs seem even more connected than they actually were. A BBC interview features Mercury confirming he'd already written it by the time they did their fourth album (a handwritten manuscript also confirms it), so it'd been penned (though not recorded) long before that Bingley Hall incident (which did inspire WWRY, but not this one).

"I consider it a challenge before the whole human race, and I never lose!" reminds me a lot of the bombast of Seven Seas of Rhye (so does "OF THE WORLD!"). Also, notice how the last "we are the champions" in every verse reverts melodically to the playground taunt "na-na, na-na-na". I always thought that was pretty cool.

I will never understand the whos & whys videos get pulled. I literally just watched another reactor do "We Are The Champions" yesterday. It stayed up and it still up. So random. Sir Brian May addressed this a couple of weeks ago, apologizing to reactors and saying Queen has no say-so in the big companies pulling the videos. He doesn't understand it either and he believes the music should be available to all.

Thank you for making this available to all. Just JP - another, well established reactor has to do this often - showing what a nonsense the copyright issue is when you can showcase some artists without fear of blocking, while others (e.g. Hendrix, The Eagles, The Beatles) may be out of reach for some people. What makes it even more ridiculous is that these tasters actually broaden our musical knowledge and probably end up in some of us buying recordings which we may not have been aware of before.
P.S. Another Sinatra 'My Way' inspired rock song is Life on Mars by David Bowie. He also excelled taking up the challenge, acknowledging the homage.

  • @eirintowne

The hat is a fantastic look for you, making this a fashion statement as well as a protest statement!
For real, though, the way the hat changes your entire charisma is astonishing! You always look pretty, no, classically beautiful is more correct, and I have noticed how your personal expression has opened up since your first video to come across as way more than the semi-mennonite harpist stereotype that was in my head. Sometimes, classically educated musicians play the role of 100 % in control so well that I forget all the passion, flirtation, playfulness and 'take this!' that is required just to be able to correctly play all the music required to get a spot in even the most mediocre orchestra. People at your level must have a deep understanding and ease with the full spectrum of human emotion just to get through a day of practicing at home!
Nevertheless, the fun and confident Amy that became visible when you wore the hat is worth noticing. Just like costumes in an opera, clothes signals to the world how the person wishes to be understood. Your decision to keep the aesthetics consistent though all the videos is a good choice, but may I suggest a very short intro of you dressing the way the song you analysed made you feel?

    Amy,
    I loved you analysis.
I really liked your comments that this is fairly complex and sophisticated song, people often overlook this fact (especially the ones that sing along the song on the stadiums :).
You had a great observation about guitar solo part in this song. Brian talked about it in several interviews. His aim was always for his guitar to become a voice, and in the second part of this song the guitar is dueting and sparring with Freddie, challenging the vocal and as he said it was a dream come true.
    He talks about it here:
    ua-cam.com/video/TFssjJKqSQY/v-deo.html
This time Vlad chosen one of the best live performances of the song (in contrast to We Will Rock You).
Regarding the meaning of the song, this one had really two meanings: one - that Freddie wanted to write a song for people to sing together, participation song etc., but the other side that he was very cheeky at the same time. During that time it was at the heights of the music press antagony against Queen and Freddie Mercury . And what he did? He wrote a song claiming "We Are The Champions". That was really brilliant :) The band was initially a bit scared when he presented them the song for the first time - but he explained to them that it can be presented in the way that it refers to everyone, them and the audience, all the people singing it. The rest is history.

It's ridiculous that the copyright bot should choose your channel to affect in this way. There's many other reaction channels that have reacted to this song with no issues whatsoever. It's almost like a lottery as to which channels are affected. And, if you just so happen to be the unlucky ones, then, no matter how you try, they simply won't let you have it. It's annoying and disappointing, to say the least. Having it free to view on your Patreon page made up for it, though. 😀😉
The one thing I've always liked about this song is that it has an strangely comforting sound to the chorus, almost as though it's a lullaby, (albeit, a rather loud one), in that it includes all who participate with it, and give a feeling of solidarity/togetherness, that is very appealing. It fits like a hand in a glove with, 'We Will Rock You', which is why they're generally played one after the other. The catchiness of the song is self-explanatory. The beginning of it sounds quite underwhelming, but soon it becomes apparent that there's anticipation to be had, once the guitar come in, then it all starts to happen when the choral voices enter the mix. From there on in, it's a rollercoaster of a ride, with highs and lows. This isn't the last time they do this, of course. There's other songs that follow a similar pattern. The most obvious one being on the next album! A song stated as being one of the most uplifting in pop history.

My radio show, which is at least 2/3 commentary on the songs and historical period, was blocked because I am playing records from the 1960s-1970s. I tried getting some kind of blanket license from performing rights and licensing organizations so I could publish the show, and was sent in a circle. UA-cam immediately blocked it when I published it. Yet, reaction videos and also people just posting copyrighted songs, are not blocked. I don't understand. So, I'm being discriminated against far more than reaction video such as this one. If anyone knows how to publish something on UA-cam without it getting blocked, please let me know.

Hey Amy! All my best wishes for this new year. (I'll get to We will rock you video right after this note)
I can guess the reason why this song is stroked: partial (diffusion) rights shall have been sold to big companies (like the NFL) who don't want to share them, and impose an exclusivity to the poor (/j) editor/rights holder.
Also, elders like me haven't heard this song half a dozen times, but more like half a thousand times... so iconic!
    Note to @splitimage137. Hey Mark!
You're right about the bitter taste this song takes when played by some groups of people who wouldn't be friends with Freddy for his advocacy of his lifestyle. But those people don't even care about authoring and rights, so...
And you are also right about the vague definition of POP. But I think that also ROCK, or BLUES, or even REGGAE are placeholders that everyone may extend as far as they like; the artists being the first to do so.
Some people call this music Stadium songs. Very few tunes may qualify for this "style", and less that sophisticated.
Finally, I cannot help myself to associate this song to Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow - INDUSTRY BABY ua-cam.com/video/UTHLKHL_whs/v-deo.html Go figure...
All the best to this fabulous community.

Sir Brian said this a few days ago, about music strikes and queen music...
"Hi Folks - - i've been watching this for a few days, and I'm very concerned. I've asked our management to look into it, and try to figure out if there is a reason for Instagram and Universal suddenly becoming so Draconian. The decision to take these videos down certainly hasn't come from us, the band. hopefully we will get an answer soon. Meanwhile, be extra careful and I'm sorry you good folks of good intentions have been put in this position. "
