- Around 2:30AM on June 28th, the fields, grain silos, and small towns along the Indiana Northeastern Railroad echoed with one of our favorite songs as Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765 arrived. We're looking forward to sharing it all summer long: indianarailexperience.org

Who's got this on repeat?
Me
Me
I do, that whistle is truly a work of art
ME
Definitely 👍
You don't realize how haunting a steam locomotive whistle is until you hear it at night.
I imaged the trained passing by a bit faster.
My Dad knew...
It does sound pretty haunting. It sounds like a ghost train. 😳
I was just thinking that before looking at comments.
I think it’s because of that echo effect it gives & how everything is still at night time when it’s blowing
That is one of the most beautiful sounds ever. Middle of the night a lonesome whistle from the past.
Definitely, and the fact that the crossing was equipped with mechanical bells made it all that much better. Made me feel like I really was looking into a day(or should I say night) of the old girl's past.
It truly is. N to see it coming past, even better!
Hearing a metal dragon in the midle of the night.
I want a steam train :(
Would be amazing to witness
I thought this thing was coming in hot at like 75mph from how it sounded to me. I was surprised to see it just cruise by. 😂
Well it's clearly a suburb based off of the houses in the background, railroads have speed limits.
@@professormetal4411And the speeds on the railroad I operate are 79 MPH Near suburbs or city
@@professormetal4411 yeah I'm not so sure that alone determines the speed limit. Sorry I guess for thinking wrong? 😂
@@HolyTrinity458 being near suburbs or in urban areas doesn't necessarily dictate the limit. Firstly there are level crossing limits. Then you stack on the fact that this is literally in the middle of a neighborhood, wherein cars have a limit of 30mph. So, obviously a locomotive which has way more mass than a car is going to be moving just as slow if not slower.
@@professormetal4411To explain how I know what I know, I’m a locomotive engineer for a commuter rail. We operate our trains near densely populated neighborhoods with level/grade crossings at 79mph. Keep in mind we are well over a million pounds in weight with no passengers. Level/grade crossings do not have speed restrictions.
Per 49 CFR § 213 track speeds are determined by Quality/Classification of rail, Curve angle and grade/level, and a couple of other miscellaneous things. There is nothing outlined in 49 CFR 213 that forces a train to move slower based on the road speed at which cars travel or the placement. Only the classification of the rail.
The rule for level/grade crossings with restrictions is outlined in 49 CFR 213.347, which states that rails class 8 and up can not cross a grade crossing. Aka, trains operating above 110mph may not pass a grade crossing.*** This means that the absolute maximum speed a train is allowed to pass through a level/grade crossing is 110mph. Given the classification of rail allows 110mph travel and does not have curved rail.
I wish that more excursion locomotives would do night runs. There's something about the nuance of the whistle flying through the night that just grabs you by your everything
Steam in the valley has night photo runs where you ride and get off half way and get to take pictures of 765 all lit up
It's a selfish desire. Anyone who isn't a railfan trying to get some sleep would be woken up by it, especially if it's near a town or residential area
@@gavindavis6035 if you live near train tracks that's your fault and trains shouldn't get stopped because you chose to live near them, reminder the tracks where there first
@@gavindavis6035 dude, trains run at night all the time. How is this one any different
@@Nkp757railfan But people, which life near at railways used to trains at night
A haunting, and very epic way to terrify a remote neighborhood at 3:00 am. Especially in October.
Especially on October 31st
I want to live in this neighborhood.
While watching this locomotive, I actually had a discussion with a local family about it’s arrival. It was a nice night so they had all the windows open and then this loud noise fills the house. At first they thought it was coyotes but soon realized otherwise
R&N 425 put on a Banshee to do a similar scene. The hills around the line give an incredible echo. ua-cam.com/video/r2aFPlXJqKw/v-deo.html Like a ghost of a bygone era, when Pennsy heavy freight moved round the clock.
That long distant whistle going off, then the pause of silence... then just as you wonder if maybe it's not coming... the gates light up, and the whistle is so loud it sounds like it's right in your ear... then the smoking beauty casually rolls past, smoke lazily billowing... perfection!
So true and I love stream locs
Just imagine that sound in the middle of the woods on an abandoned railroad. Very ghost train feeling. Perfect echo.
The audio equipment this guy used is top notch.
Really wish this video wasn’t taken by a crossing 🫤
Something like that actually happened to me once... I was out exploring a long-abandoned railbed out in the country and heard a steam whistle in the distance. Still not sure what it was but the timing couldn't have been better.
Same thing happened when I was walking by an excursion railroad in my old hometown and there was a steam tractor show going on on the other side of town
I plan to write something like this.
Spoilers: My characters got startled. Even though they were doing urbex and fooling around looking for "ghosts", they didn't actually expect to hear one.
That echo is so good honestly like if I was just minding my business and I hear that and I didn't know what it was I would probably be scared!
It’s scary and horrific..
Heheh, Don’t doubt that.
I love how you can see the Mars light vibing doing it’s figure 8 pattern
I love the Mars light.
Especially the Lissajous "888" lights.
Came here to say the same thing.
All you can see is a a solid light. Can't see any oscillation.
As a german, I always wondered why this lightpattern exists; I dont know any german (at that, I dont even know a european loco) that has headlights like this. Mind to explain what its for?
@@silvermedal1o117 from what I’ve been told it’s to make the locomotive more noticeable to vehicles and pedestrians that are beside the track. With the light moving all the time it would grab someone’s attention better than just a single straight on headlight. That and with the pattern the light shines a little further away from the tracks.
I love how she's just peacefully whistling and puffing through the quiet night
It’s sounds like a K5L and a Nathan 6 chime put together, it’s beautiful in a haunting way
I was thinking the exact same!
It’s a Nathan 6
It sounds exactly like a sandcast k5H. Look up some videos on UA-cam, literally exactly the same
@@65mustangkcode yeah, it’s so cool
This is kinda creepy and beautiful at the same time.
Imagine standing there in the dead of night.
Suddenly you hear a whistle far away that is closing in.
just when you hear the train must be close by, the barriers go down and the lights start flashing.
You're eagerly waiting for the train to pass with a little discomfort because there are never any trains running at this time, but after a little while there's still no train to be seen.
After a couple of minutes the barriers go up and the lights stop flashing. The train never passed, but you start hearing the whistle again.
at first very loud as if the train just went by and is just around the corner, and as time goes on, the whistle gets further and further away until it has vanished in the distance.
Yes! And the whistle stops and as the gates come down the engine suddenly comes out of nowhere with its 80 foot long cow catcher leading the way and she blows her whistle loud and does a back flip. The wheels all switch places and the steam billows like a cosmic kite as the Fat Controller waves from the fo'c'stle. It was awesome enough to see that in the video but in real life it would have really been something.
Wow that whistle from a distance it’s like hearing the polar Express coming I love it
I was about to say that lmfao
They used this trains whistle in the movie, the physical train was the pere Marquette in the movie with some modifications done too it but the whistle was from this train!
2022? Could have been years in the past. Great music and what a great wake up call.
I go to bed around 3 am my time and i would love to hear that before bed.
I love how you can hear them from miles away. The steam as if the engine is alive u'know.
That’s music to a railfan’s ears. Probably the best sound to hear at night
if i heard a steamy screaming near me, i'd go out at anytime of night to hurry to watch it. even if its just in sweats and a jacket i'd hop in my car and speed off to watch a lovely rare site.
@@envisioner007 I would too
Sounding like a cross between a steam whistle and a K5L diesel horn. Beautiful sounds.
I was just gonna say that! lol
Sounds amazing!!! Music to my ears!
Wait this isn't music?
It's Wednesday.

This is the best 765's whistle has ever sounded.
Looking forward to seeing your 4,000 horses gallop through the Hoosier state this summer!
Sounds like hearing a ghost! Steam whistles of the past.
Amazing!!! Such a soulful whistle in the dark night, a beautiful sound. That steam locomotive is a strong beautiful beast!!! 💯🔥💖🏆🥇
Imagine hearing this on a cold snowy night. That would have been amazing.
I would actually enjoy getting woke up in the middle of the night by that.
I’m in LOVE!! Music to my ears times 1000!!! 1955 all over again 😭
I've said it before but steam engines are such majestic machines, It always makes me a little sad we don't use them much anymore.
The classy looks, the iconic rattle of they're wheels, the whistles, the golden Era of culture they used to represent.... it's almost enough to mourn the loss of these iron behemoths
Lived in Painesville, Ohio for a time between stints in the military and heard a whistle off in the distance. I quick got in my car and got to my local train crossing just in time to see the 765 going by, with a load of passengers on a fan trip! Was breathtaking! Love steam engines.
I live a couple miles from a very active NS rail and can hear it most days. I can only imagine the sound from 80 yeard ago of the steam whistles rolling through the hills
That is the most beautiful sounds in the world, I hope that whistle never changes
That’s epic, I wonder if 765 can reunite with 1225 for a fourth time and 611 for a second time since 1984?
Good chances that I’ll finally be able to cross this beast off my bucket list this summer! Cannot wait!
Did you go? We did too! It was
A M A Z I N G!!
That whistle just give the Steam engine an energy of "A living titan screaming its lungs out as it approach", those engine sounds like they were living being by each sound of the piston working with the steam, we won't see those beautiful machines working on the rail very soon...
I absolutely love that sound, but the train came through that crossing at about a quarter of the speed I was expecting...
This is hands down my favorite sound in the world.
Watched this about 12 times. Still get chills sounds like it's going about 100 mph.
That whistle at night sends chills down my spine.
That feel when you hear a steam whistle getting louder and louder when you're no-where near traintracks
Fantastic! Felt like I was standing beside O. Winston Link.
I LOVE the sounds of passing trains at night! 🚂🚂 It reminds me of our childhood when Mom and Dad would take us to Columbus, NE and the Farm to visit Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins! 💖💖 Aunt Valeria's home was only a block from train tracks. My little bro Tommy and I would sleep in a Big Feather Bed and hear the sounds all night!!! 😁😁 Of course, now that I am old, I am glad the nearest tracks here in Omaha are 2-3 miles away! 😍😍
Rich Melvin (Icon engineer for 765) always said engineering at night was his favorite!
The loneliest sound in the world is the old steam whistle in the middle of the night. I love it.
Pure amazing! Just imagine hearing that coming in the dead calm of night!
Like a full color, video with sound version of a classic O. Winston Link pic! LOVE IT!
Love this train/whistle. It’s kind of haunting but as a train lover it is the best sound to hear at night
This brings back so many memories of being a kid in the early 50's and living in a small town on the prairies of western Canada . The sound of the end of the steam locomotives still locked in my mind. Wonderful sane childhood memories .
The urgency in that horn, and it just comes moseying across at a snails pace. 😂
Does anyone else keep coming back to watch this again and again.......
These Giant hulking beasts of metal just spitting steam and bellowing smoke while letting out a ghastly whisle in the darkness of the night is so absolutely enchanting
As a fort Wayne resident, im so thankful to hear this every summer. Was in new haven once and this beautiful beast flew past on its way home. I could hear its whistle blowing for almost 45 minutes as it went down the fort wayne line.
Can you imagine living in the 1930’s and listening to those mournful whistles as you lay in bed at night! Sweet music to my ears.
It must have been so awesome in the 30s and 40s to hear a train coming from your car
O. Winston Link would be proud at this night shot AND sound recording. Thank you for posting and sharing
It's funny how you expect the train to come speeding through but it's just creeping along slowly. Very haunting whistle. So 😎
That style of whistle is so, so goosebump inducing!
just hearing that lovely whistle howl is a wonder.
That. Was. Awesome! That whistle blowing in the background at night was just fantastic! 😀👏👍🙏💙
Just like the “Good Old Days”.
I seriously can't wait for 2716.
I would love for 765 and 1225 to be renumbered to their C&O numbers and to get a photo of the three 2-8-4s in their C&O paint.
Nice video, FW!
Imagine walking down some railroad tracks at night to clear your mind, and you hear this getting louder and louder and louder behind you
Wow this is super beautiful, and kinda calming. The video at night also makes it cooler.
Awesome video, I'm glad that the crossing bells are still mechanical, too.👍
Even with $5.00 ear buds the sound is so awesome.
I think we need one that's in the snow AND in the mountains. It echo's in the mountains well enough, but when it's snowing hard enough, you'll head 765 from miles and miles away!
This and O. Weston Link’s Rural Retreat recording are the best samples of steam railroading and living during that time
That had to be cool to run it in the middle of the night
I was waiting for it to come roaring by like a bat outta hell at 75 or 80 but to see it just cruise by at like 10 is just funny to me
I love how the sound reverberates
I watch this and remember the stories my Dad would tell me about traveling by rail all over CONUS when he was in the Army from 1944 to after 1950. He would say; "Listening to that gets me all-goose-bumpy again."
I live in a past railroad hub, Jackson TN, and one man, Judge Milton Brown, a prominent politician from TN, who later became the president of Gulf Mobile and Ohio Railroad, lived in a large estate here, one of his old Pullman rail cars still sit here today, next to an old steam engine, a sister model to the one Casey Jones was the engineer of, Casey Jones is also buried here in Jackson, and I just find it sort of haunting that in old Victorian era Jackson, we had steam locomotives such as this steaming along day and night, across now abandoned rail lines, I’ve been inside of our old train station for NC&STL we used to have steam trains, then the newer luxury passenger lines that would take the Flagler Line! Now it’s only CSX and The West TN RR
I would love to be woken up to this in the middle of the night!
That sounds beautiful! Would be nice to hear it through Putnam County on the Monon Railway!
What a beautiful song from an equally beautiful machine.
I thought that Berk was going fast in the thumbnail.
ha goes back in time when that was a regular sound at night steam whistling in the night
Why is this so soothing to my soul??!!
Beautiful shot
I've listened to this so many times I know when the crossing bells start ringing exactly on point...lol like a switch in my brain.
Bucket List ride behind for sure - been a fan of the Berkshire locomotives for a long time. Glad we have NKP 765, along with PM 1225, to show what this underrated class was capable of.
On a side note, it makes you wonder why they keep the crossing bells dinging - if you can't hear that whistle you're not going to hear the bells.
Absolutely beautiful video!! Thank you!!
Hear that lonesome whistle love old train horn sound good
this is absolutely the best video I've seen in years. The audio is so beautiful! I love it!
I would totally be suprised seeing a steam engine or hearing it they don’t exist so much anymore
That's why it's good that a number of them have been preserved; steam locomotives, including this one, are magnificent machines, and it's good for present and future generations to experience them. . .
I remember this sound in the middle of the night as a kid in Baton Rouge near the Illinois Central.
I love the sound of trains. It’s one of my top favorite sounds.
Second is a foghorn.
Third is bell chimes especially from Big Ben or the grandfather clock.
Those gates sounding like that made me wanna dance. Seriously I was Vibing to the bells rhythm.
Train whistles are the greatest and most beautiful sounds on earth
I showed this to my great grandpa and he said first thing he thought of was sleeping in his bedroom when he was a child and hearing the clanking and whistle of iron in the distance
Gorgeous engine and steam whistles sound the best.
That sends shivers up and down my spine (in a great way)...greetings to the great folks in the U.S from down under.
Absolutely delicious! Fantastically stunning engine n the sound it makes is truly a magical delight for the ears.
Outstanding!!
The crickets at the beginning really add to the effect.
Well done!
If that doesn't send shivers up the old spine I don't know what would. Wish she rolled past my house
Hauntingly beautiful whistle. 👻💯
Just a great video. That haunting whistle is amazing.
A example of what steam runs was at night in the 30s,40s and 50s and man do I love that mars light rotation
The best sound in all of history right here.
i love how the whistle pauses for dramatic effect and THEN the crossing light up lol
This is beautiful! It makes me love trains so much more.
When the crossing lights suddenly came on, chills. Not kidding. Great video.
Awesome video. That lonesome sound causes many chill bumps. Hearing the N&W 611J whistle has the same effect ❤❤❤❤
