- I just wanted to get this up fast so no editing. Southern Pacific 4449 going 60 mph in the Columbia River Gorge. I had to wait 3 hours in the sun today but I got to meet some nice people so it was worth it. Great view of Mt Hood in Oregon. If you like my videos, rate, comment and subscribe to my channel (Canon Vixia HG20)
i still find myself coming here, even after 10 years just to view this again, never gets old
Frrr
Humans see a train coming, decide its perfect time to cross the track.
Smartest creatures on the planet.
Ikr wow they can outsmart a cumputer
They held cameras, maybe this could mean they didn't know 4449 was going to pass by and they wanted to take a shot from that corner real quick......
We should really stop labeling humans as the smartest creatures.
Ikr they are smarter than dolphins and they are hecking smart
@g h wtf are you trying to say
I love the sound of a train whistle....
It reminds me of my father....he loved trains.
RIP dad. I miss you
rip lil bro
Rip. To dad
What did he die to
It was a close call. They nearly missed the shot. Certainly no time to adjust depth of field or shutter speed.

If you practice you can get really fast. I always shoot full manual.
Maybe they are not photographers like so many now days who just switch it on to full auto and press the release. All the gear no idea.

Never underestimate the speed of a train and cross the tracks. I thought the couple were going to cross at the first sound of the whistle, but they waited till the train was on the bend; that's risky.
that is very very true like they wanted to risk dying
@@scrzbbles7they could trip and then their bones would crunch on the train wheels
"We can hear the bells ringing. We can hear the train coming. Oh, we can see the train coming. It must be time to nip un-athletically over the track. Let's hope we don't trip and fall directly into the path of the oncoming train leaving ourselves only a second or two to help each other out of the way of almost certain death."
Narrator: "Humans; how on Earth did they survive this long?"
Looks like America doesnt do any development in railway . Even Indian Railways are better than American ones.
@@jyotsnasrivastava6373 You sure about that? I'm Indian blooded so
@StormYT well, I wouldn't go _that_ far, Indian trains are very nice, if you have lot of money you can get trains just as nice as America
That’s a beautiful mountain.
I searched for Pat Matheny Group, Last Train Home. It eventually led me here. My father, a fireman on the Soo Line in the late "30s inspired in me a love of all things Steam and Railroad. Thank you for the amazing images
Being a ancient railway geek, I always view preserved steam loco vids so naturally I clicked on yours when I saw the loco. Awesome scenery, impressive locomotive even liked the whistle (bit more baritone than usual for a U.S. steam whistle). Luckily the jay-walkers didn't have I-pod speakers in their ears. Thanks for posting - I just viewed your others.
May be I have missed it, where was the close call!
You and me both.
^^^@New York Junky .. The couple that crossed the Tracks practically in front of that Train, Man you must have blinked and Missed it Ha!!! :P] .v (Nmcfmamf) ..
@@splash5150izy It wasn't a close call tho
@@anthonyj810 .. To ordinary folk no it's not, but to the Railways Department it's in their books as a "Close Call" Even if someone was a hundred feet away from a Train on the Tracks it's referred to as a Close Call, Gosh People Ain't Allowed on a Train Track when a Freaking Train is Coming toward them Anyways, Comprende Amigo? .. .
If one of them tripped on the track out of panic and fell, with the train barreling towards them at that speed they would have needed a prosthetic limb, or a coffin.
DUDE I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR SO LONG, I LOVE IT SOO MUCH DUDE
Having a mountain like that as a backdrop to your town is awesome
Wow what awesome scenery you captured along with the SP best footage Ive seen from all of your train videos.
Two thumbs up to you...
I was watching this video when I was 2 back then in 2011 and I rewatched it a lot of times and now 13 years later I still enjoyed watching it. Thank you for this memory...❤❤❤
lol same here
Esse vídeo me marcou muito a minha infância vendo esse trem nostágico.Faz mais 10 anos atrás.
It never fails at stuff like this (steam excursions, etc), there always seems to be a railfan latecomer, or two, or somebody who decides to change positions at the last possible second and walks/runs in front of everybody else's shots. And who would run in front of a fast moving train like that? One slip and it's all over. Excellent video, and a great runby!
Too many people on the planet anyway, so we lose a few.
@@SuperOlds88 or we don’t have so many kids is a better way

Nothing to see here, except some very nice videography; the framing of Mt. Hood at the beginning, panning out to the perspective of the curve leading your eye as the train approached and passed, and ending nicely with the centered - and distant - Mt. Hood. Nice.
Thanks for the comment
@ErvansTrains. That Southern Pacific 4449 was going at 60 mph. The man and the woman just made it across the tracks quickly. 😮💨. Man that was a close call.
Beautiful Train! I havent seen one of those since I was a kid back in the 50s...I didnt know they still ran them!
Well, they put this locomotive in a museum a few years ago. It will probably run again sometimes. But to often anymore
Daylight is an amazing looking locomotive isn’t it
What a wonderful way to travel, back in the day. Entire country's moving all at once. Beautiful. .
that was a pretty exciting close call! I sure wouldn't want to run across those tracks right then! Yikes!
Yes, I feel the same way. I don't know why they did it
What if one tripped. Matt

Wimps, Not even close. Guess none of you would sky dive either, or go to space in a manned Space vehicle. Or anything remotely dangerous.
“If that train have been half a mile closer it would of hit them!”
Watching this video years later brings so much nostalgia
Just came to this video by chance. Loved it. Cheers from Scotland.

Who's watching in 2019. I found this when I was like 6 and couldn't find it since so this is a pleasant surprise
Wow, that train is coming faster than it appears. Love the train horn. Sounds like a Mississippi River steamboat.

What a beautiful engine!
That new (original)whistle sounds absolutely gorgeous on her going that fast!
Thanks, nicely done. I just kind of stumbled across your 844/4449 vid and then saw this one. As a retired conductor I can tell you stupid people on the rails are hard on the crew. You're absolutely helpless and can only hope you don't kill them.
Thanks for your comment. I agree
0:52 That is a General Signal Type 2 Ebell, which you heard at the railroad crossing. I love that railroad crossing bell. Greetings from Alabama.
Beatiful whistle. Great Job!
@WPRR1 When SP 4449 was in active service back in the 50's, she operated passenger trains from LA to San Francisco. Since the line was usually very foggy, she used the A200 horn because it projects it's sound further and does a better job of warning people in fog when you can't really see the train coming. Now, she only uses her Leslie A200 horn as a back-up when the whistle doesn't work or when people get too close.
Absolutely spectacular, both the locomotive and the scenery.
saw this video as a kid..beautiful..
What A Nice Train And Nice Video Ervan!
Superbly captured Ervan, and clearly shows the stupidity of some people, a trip, slip or fall would have resulted in a fatality.....leaves you speechless doesn't it....Bob
Yo, are you alive?
"Close call?" Do they mean the mountain almost fell on them? lol
Well, if you trip, you're dead...
The mountain at the moment was 4449. And it came straight at them
lmao that's hilarious
Dude, don’t play around, they could have died.
Salti Dawg It's clearly about the train
Had come across your video long ago and seen this particular video several times.Though the engine is smaller than BigBoy, DayLight appears so imposing and massive. Great Video and like to see the part when the train hurtles past. VishG

Always keep in mind that trains move a lot faster than they appear. Never challenge a train to a footrace: The train always wins.

Your clip showed up on my You Tube access page because I often look at British steam clips. Being an ex British Railways Train Driver. Interesting piece of film. Which reveals the problems of not having lineside fences in the USA (a legal requirement in Britain) !
Yes, I think a close call - it only needs one of them to trip and it's life-threatening. Heedless behaviour . . .

Buen video. Una pregunta. Ese tren es de larga distancia y recorre en estados. Saludo desde 🇦🇷Buenos Aires, Argentina
A lot of my friends do work for the railroad. I'm not saying this was really close but if you watch it close you can see it was only 12 seconds from hitting them. Not a lot of time if you tripped and fell.
well, i'm saying that both of you are idiots.
As railfans they should have known better. They heard the bells from a nearby crossing, and even if they hadn't had time to cross the tracks at the established crossing, they were expecting a train and should have crossed to the other side sooner. It's a superb spot for a photo; their timing was off. Falling down as an adult isn't the same as scrambling to one's feet as a child. You can react quickly, but usually not as quickly.
Amtrak
it was actually 19 seconds. However they were trespassing and could have been charged. For the very reason you see there, there railroads ask people to stay off their tracks.
@@michaelcharisseguymon1923 You are wrong. It was 12 seconds. I was there
Cool! I went through Wishram on my summer trip!
This was one of my first train videos of all time, glad i found it again.
They both could've tripped crossing and still had time to get up and clear it.
RoC 77 famous last words.
People trip and break a leg often
I doubt it, that train was hauling ass
They did it on purpose . Because they heard the whistle but they kept going on the tracks and then they got off
You have to factor fear and panic
It's also exaggerated because of compressed perspective of the telephoto lenses so there was actually a lot more distance between.
WOW!!! The scenery alone makes this a wonderful video. And the train capture is wonderful. Gorgeous!
unbelievable shots
Nice shot of Mount Hood!
Man that daylight really is one of the most goregous beasts you can find running the rails she never gets old. Awesome catch Ervan
Hi
Amazing catch!!! Although, at 1:25, the video was messed up. It's pretty minor, though.
Awesome catch!
Nice video. Sure very nice. Tha panorm too very nice. Thank you.
Oh damn, just a few more 100 feet and they'd be dead!
How do you know it was a few more 100 feet left?
@@florjanbrudar692 Its called an estimation
There was around 1050 ft between them and the train after they finished crossing.
Probably not dead but extremely injured
Oh damn, another mile and we finally stopped after dragging their corpses the entire way... Trains aren't cars, and they certainly don't stop like em.
I grew up along RR tracks, if that was a “close call” my friends and I had dozens of them a week.
Wtf
You mean you actually walked on railroad property even without being an employee?

My wife was on the dumpster with the door open when the train roared by - that was one hell of a splash.

It looks like that place in that movie where those kids run from a steam train and two kids make it and the others just make it. Im pretty sure the movie is called Stand By Me
Yes
It’s Avery, few miles above The Dalles Dam, Stand by me would have been across the river and couple hundred miles.
OMG stand by me was such a great movie

OMG THAT TRAIN IS SO COOL!
That wasn't close there was around 10seconds between crossing and passing anyway it is against the law to cross railroad track outside a crossing

The dislikes are people who don’t care about railroad safety.
The suspense is REAL!!
