You are right Virginia in my view is a very underrated place look at all the athletes that are from there Michael Vick, Allen Iverson, Pernell Whitaker, The Barber Twins, Moses Malone, Lawrence Taylor, Bruce Smith, Kenny Easley, Alonzo Mourning, Mike Tomlin, Russell Wilson, and Kam Chancellor . It amazes me that they don’t get recognition nationally maybe it because they really don’t have a sports team of their own down there.
Good to hear Pernell get some props. This story came and went as if he's not a legend. I didn't even see ESPN cover it, just a mention in the news ticker.
This could go under your new series as there’s no tomorrow and it would be fitting too because the first installment was about a boxer (Errol Spence) who almost died in a car accident. Then you have sweet pea who gets killed by a car
Simply one of the greatest of all time POINT BLANK PERIOD....about 5'6 69" reach with less power than his counterparts...the man could make you miss, fight on the back foot, fight moving fwd, DIG TO THE BODY and footwork was great!!!! the man had a great jab on top of that!!!
Peace Sweet Pea was my favorite boxer not ONLY because he was a great boxer and inspired me to box he lived in my neighborhood. Wow I didn't even know he passed. Man I watched ALL of em and fought alot like him. Yes drugs was all over bk
Pernell Whitaker went up to 154 and beat Julio César Vásquez, who was a hard hitting Argentina southpaw whom had only 1 lost by DQ when they fought. Vasquez gave Ls to both Aaron Davis and a young Winky Wright. Sweat Pea made him look like an amateur!
I watched some Pernell Whitaker highlights, this guy showed a lot of pose, his defense was amazing. Also, a lot of boxers, mma fighters, and all other sport athletes forget is to be flexible. Pernell, Tyson, Mayweather, all had great defense, pose, and flexibility.
Alotta the step around moves that Lomachenko does, Pernell was all that. I remember watching him as an amateur in the Olympics he looked like a pro. I remember on that US Olympic team there was Evander Holyfield, Meldrick Taylor, etc. And Parnell we the MVP
I want to share how great Pernell Whitaker was..... he beat James buddy mcgirt for his WBC 147 lb championship... at the time James buddy mcgirt was considered the number 3 pound-for-pound fighter in the whole world..... the next fight he beat Julio Cesar Chavez who was considered by most the pound for pound best fighter in the world..... and then the next fight he beat James buddy mcgirt again in the rematch.... so to recap this man beat the number 1 and number 3 pound-for-pound fighter in back-to-back-to-back fights... and that's the greatness of Pernell Whitaker Norfolk native Uptown Norfolk Legend.......
Tragic lost... We used to order all of Sweet Pea's fights. Even though his actual nickname was Sweet Pete, a reporter mis-heard it and said "Sweet Pea"... What puts him in the all time greats is that Pernell was an UNDISPUTED only 1 none other CHAMPION... We would take Pernell slightly over Floyd jr. in a match. Loosely quoted, Floyd jr. said he got his confidence and new he arrived when he claimed to get the best of Sweet Pea in a sparring session. They robbed Sweet Pea versus Oscar and Chavez Sr. and u right, the politics got Oscar the victory. Then they went and robbed Oscar after he took Tito Trinidad to school, smmfh... Shoutouts to you Sweet Pea, your boxing prowess will always be remembered ~
After he left Arum I believe Floyd began to pick his fights, but u right, he wasn't like other greats who were more willing to jump in with other good fighters cold turkey...
the thing is pernell isnt really an exciting fighter... floyd atleast is a knockout finsher in his early career... floyd just got more power and flash than pernell... no wonder he gets more recognition
@@raw5889 I actually did.. I watched it live as they were fighting, and I've watched it like 7/8 times since. I know what I saw, now you go back and look at it. Show or tell me what did Oscar do?? He was missing punches at an alarming rate
Eric Stanford i watched it very recently, and it was pretty one sided after the second round. Honestly I would only give Pernell two rounds. It was as close to an ass whopping as can be without losing all twelve rounds.

Top 5 pound for pound of all time, easy. He would be the best fighter in boxing if he was still around.
RIP Sweet Pea Whitaker 😞😢☹️
I'm 5'8 I stood next to Floyd and I was about 2 to 3 inches taller than him

Brotha please get your own website!!!!
Sweet Pea is a true Boxing great. BTW Charlamagne's comments towards him, which he was thought a joke, was utterly disrespectful towards the Man
And he beat oscar too
#MarkAguirre #CHICAGOLEGEND
Hey Judah do a video about Jeff chancellor he and Parnell laid the grown work on how to beat the best Mexican fighters.
i'd take pernell over floyd any day. floyd picked fighters to suit his style. sweet pea never dodged anyone, ever...

Love Pernell but oscar whooped him.
What fight was you watching?? That was highway robbery.. Whitaker beat that fight playboy.
Eric Stanford watch that fight again with your eyes open, Pernell barley touched him.
