Leonard Susslknd is one of those rare scientists who can help folks understand incredibly tough physics. He is so pure, i get high just watching his explanations! Thanks Propfessor Susskind for taking time to share with us\. And thanks Brian Greene for facilitating this wonderful interview!
And yet when attempting to explain it, he confesses that he "can't do it properly without a piece of paper and the equations" which is an admission that the answers are strictly mathematical and defy explanation in only words, which I find extremely frustrating, as I am not a mathmetician. Not only do I find it frustrating, but it makes me suspect that the explanation is inadequate in some way. I believe that answers must be communicable in linguistic terms. Einstein's theories, whicle are admittedly difficult to grasp at first hearing, can ultimately be understood through thought experiments, which by their very nature are metaphorical and therefore relateble linguistially.
yeah and with Green as an interviewer its just gold. I mean who else could just casually answer off the top of their head questions like, "how many particles are there in the universe" when his guest forgets the number and ask?🤣
No way, we're on the verge of the ultimate unifying theories like never before! It's a shame so many people have had their excitement beaten out of them by overrepresented pessimism and lack of representation of the progress going on.

It is not a matter of pushing the boundaries further, but of reconciling the boundaries from probabilistic to deterministic (from quantum to classical). Indeed that transition that defies all explanation.

I used to love reading the book "Feynman lectures on physics". He was a master of simplifying hard physics problems. If anyone today comes close to Feynman's mastery then it is Susskind. I highly respect him and love watching his lectures.

There are too many comments to read through and see if anyone else already mentioned this: If you are watching with subtitles, be aware that, besides the usual misspellings of proper names, "brains" are really "branes" -- sort of like membranes, but membranes are two-dimensional and branes can have various dimensions.

Brian and Carl are different. Carl was a groundbreaker. In the pre-video media age, nothing like Cosmos had ever been done before. Brian is a super smart guy and his format, often panel discussions, is quite unique. In the end though, Brian's delivery tends to distract me from the content.
Amazing work Brian and leonard. And most importantly awesome work to world science festival. I love watching anyone at the top of their respective craft and you guys are, could tell it was a little unscripted which in my opinion makes it better but it's still a top-notch program good for you guys.
All interviews are unscripted as far as ive ever known. They have a list of bullet points that they will talk about but ive never known any interview be scripted. Far too time consuming to learn & no guest would ever do it.

Leonard, I ran in to you many years ago on the Beaverkill. As we each worked up and down the stream we talked a few times about the stream , the flies that were sporadically hatching, and the slow fishing. During our first conversation I asked about your career and you said “I’m a physicist”. Your clothing was unique to the region at that time and made me curious. Go back there one more time. It’s isn’t all that far and the clock is ticking.

I'm 70, so in my 8th decade; I think challenging one's brain to handle novel ideas is a very powerful way to mentally "work out". The fantastic thing about communicating science is that we live in an age when the lay person can grasp these wonderful big ideas usefully without being able to quantify every math detail. It's the novel ideas that inspire and thrill and leave the memory of the concepts to mull over.
I like the fact that Leonard comes from a working class background. I'm guessing his folks didn't have the opportunity to go to college, worked hard, put their son through school, it's a real American success story.

It was a 2 and a half hour lecture and went many places, It wasn’t string theory as a whole but one little aspect within the lecture.

There are too many comments to read through and see if anyone else already mentioned this: If you are watching with subtitles, be aware that, besides the usual misspellings of proper names, "brains" are really "branes" -- sort of like membranes, but membranes are two-dimensional and branes can have various dimensions.

Negative! Sagan had an engaging way of lecturing. BG is super smart, but his awkward pauses are hard to listen to.
Brian Greene is Brian Green, Carl Sagan is Carl Sagan. They are both great. There’s no need for this.

Brian and Carl are different. Carl was a groundbreaker. In the pre-video media age, nothing like Cosmos had ever been done before. Brian is a super smart guy and his format, often panel discussions, is quite unique. In the end though, Brian's delivery tends to distract me from the content.

Amazing work Brian and leonard. And most importantly awesome work to world science festival. I love watching anyone at the top of their respective craft and you guys are, could tell it was a little unscripted which in my opinion makes it better but it's still a top-notch program good for you guys.
All interviews are unscripted as far as ive ever known. They have a list of bullet points that they will talk about but ive never known any interview be scripted. Far too time consuming to learn & no guest would ever do it.

Leonard, I ran in to you many years ago on the Beaverkill. As we each worked up and down the stream we talked a few times about the stream , the flies that were sporadically hatching, and the slow fishing. During our first conversation I asked about your career and you said “I’m a physicist”. Your clothing was unique to the region at that time and made me curious. Go back there one more time. It’s isn’t all that far and the clock is ticking.

I'm 70, so in my 8th decade; I think challenging one's brain to handle novel ideas is a very powerful way to mentally "work out". The fantastic thing about communicating science is that we live in an age when the lay person can grasp these wonderful big ideas usefully without being able to quantify every math detail. It's the novel ideas that inspire and thrill and leave the memory of the concepts to mull over.
Leonard Susskind is probably an amazing grandpa you can see love and kindess in his eyes

I like the fact that Leonard comes from a working class background. I'm guessing his folks didn't have the opportunity to go to college, worked hard, put their son through school, it's a real American success story.
