My family and I use to live about a mile from his house and we would trick or treat every year in his neighborhood. We always made sure to stop by his house because he would pass out king sized candy bars 😁and he was always kind hearted. He would come out and talk to us and tell us boxing stories as well. Such a cool dude and wonderful boxer.

Pernell Sweet pea Whitaker was one hell of a boxer and I don't think he had any legitimately unquestionable losses. He arguably beat Julio Cesar Chavez and at least drew with Felix Trinidad. It's so darkly ironic how such a defensive wizard with so much heart, who could dodge everything, was run down by a careless heartless driver. Rest easy champ! You will always be in the boxing hall of Fame and on the Mount Rushmore of the sport.

That robbery against ramirez drained a little from him then the robbery against chavez was the proverbial nail in the coffin of his confidence & natural charisma. This man was one of the top 2 boxers of the 80s & a top 5 fighter in the 90s..those robberies affected his confidence & spirit even tho the physical skills were still there. It matters when your unbeaten record is stolen from you & your career affected unjustly through no fault of his own. No telling where his legacy & career would've went by the decision makers getting those decisions right.
The robbery against Ramirez did nothing to Pernell. It actually made him a better fighter. He came back and won the rematch and continued to dominate pretty much his whole career. The questionable judging never regressed his fighting ability. He even became a more aggressive fighter later in his career.
This was beautifully said..I grew up on Sweet Pea, he made me want to box and be able to defend myself, I cried whenever he got robbed..His heart did change after being robbed ( a few times )..He'll always be one of my top dawgs. I wish he was alive so we could hear his stories and his take on everything..

I used to live in Virgina. 2014, Sweet Pea came in to the Cigar Shop I managed at the time, took a bunch of photos with the guys in the lounge, got some cigars, and left. I'd see him at the corner restaurant every now and again. His ability to duck and move was incredible! I always wondered if you were going to do a documentary on him. thank you!

I ran into Sweet Pea once in New York at the prime of his career and again in Charlotte NC at the end of his career. We were from the same area and I enjoyed meeting him twice. One of the greatest for sure.

Sweet Pea is the reason I started boxing. I was left handed (southpaw) and 140 pounds at best so pretty small so I thought it would be best to find somebody with my similar body type to teach me how to box. I looked up the greatest southpaws of all time list and Pernell was one of the first to pop up. I watched everything single thing he did from nip to tuck. 4 years later even at 200 pounds I still fight like Pernell which is crazy. Rest In Peace legend you’ll be forever missed ❤

He definitely got robbed in a few fights politics towards the tail end of his career but the truth is in his prime he was clearly ahead of his time.. the 1 pound-for-pound best boxer I've ever seen meaning when I was growing up he held that title on top of his own belts

Sweet Pea was a byproduct of George Benton, who at the time was the crown naster of the Philly Shell defense. It sucks how Benton never got the middleweight title first for being drafted in the Korean War and then being shot. Sweet Pea truly remarkable his shoulder rules evasis ducks and pivots are almost Godly. What a great team these two made. Sweet Pea you made my birthday by watching you brilliantly being you in the ring. RIP Sweet Pea and Professor Benton. And of course, thank you, Joe Vincent. We all have reflexes and reflexes can be developed but what Pernell had was a gift from God. RIP to the Champ. Great video.
