This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 Kia EV6 electric crossover. The EV6 is Kia’s first vehicle to be based on the company’s dedicated new platform for battery electric vehicles. With its clamshell hood, flushed door handles, LED rear lamps, a wing-type spoiler design and 19” wheels, available 20”, it is sure to be a standout on the road. Our test model is the top GT-Line in Yacht Blue and it has a unique look compared to other standard models. It comes with a different front and rear bumper, side character line molding, body colour wheel arches instead of black, auto flush door handles which can be deployed or retracted automatically and 20” wheels. The entry-level EV6 RWD standard range comes with a 58 kWh battery. It has 167 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with 373 km/232 miles of EV range. The RWD Long Range model with a larger 77.4 kWh battery has 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, it offers the most range at 499 km/310 miles. The AWD Long Range model has the most power with 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, it gets 441 km/274 miles of EV range. In Canada, The GT-Line Package 1 and Package 2 are both AWD Long Range models. In the US, the GT-Line has both RWD and AWD Long Range options. The GT-Line is not to be confused with the more powerful eGT model, which is coming later this year. The EV6 uses an eco-friendly heat pump to recycle heat given off by the vehicle’s electronic components and uses it to optimize battery pack temperature. It is standard one up from the base model on the RWD Long Range model and AWD Long Range model in the US. The EV6 offers a driver-focused cockpit with the start button and dial shifter in the optimal position. It has a premium quality interior with plenty of storage space, curved dual panoramic 12.3” screens, available ambient lighting and an available 14-speaker Meridian audio system as well as a sunroof which opens. Kia has incorporated sustainable design elements in this EV from the use of more than 100 recycled bottles for interior parts, 100% LED lighting and the exclusive use of vegan leather.
The centre console is well organized with different storage locations and a large open tray to put larger items. Kia has come up with a brilliant design for the EV6 integrating infotainment and air conditioning control keys. With the touch of a button you can switch back and forth improving the intuitiveness of the cockpit design. Connect your Apple Watch or personal device to your vehicle via the Kia Connect App to manage charging, set cabin temperatures and energy usage.

Drove one the other day, it is very nice and it feels rock solid. It does drive and seem more like a car than an SUV or even a CUV; not a bad thing. I just cannot take the dealer markup of anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 ---I refuse to pay a huge jump in price on a depreciating asset. HUGE trunk, a lot of room for stuff. Also very comfy.

Agree with you re: the significant mark-up. I think I've seen as high as $16,000 USD. Most dealerships seem to be able to make a sale with a bit of mark-up, but many of these mark-ups are insane. They're damaging their reputation with consumers. I won't be going back to those dealerships, not even in a few months when the mark-ups go away.

Some great EVs coming on the market, but Zach is right: an affordable EV is still no where to be found. Also, the non-Tesla charging network is a mess right now; a lot of charging stations not working, complicated payment and operations. It’s clear we’re still in the early days of EV transportation.

I love Zac hammering the affordability point. "You save on gas and maintenance" well even at $4/gallon, I only fill up twice/month. That's $576 but lets add in a couple road trips and maintenance, call it $1,000/year for gas + maintenance. Let's also assume I can always charge my EV completely free. EVs are about $10k more than hybrids from what I can tell so you still get crushed, maybe 10 years to break even. oof...

Great overview folks! I'm surprised that the heat pump and v2l plug are not included with the base trim for Canada. The heat pump substantially improves efficiency in the winter months, and I don't think the cost to make it standard would be significant. The seat base plug is a great feature that buyers might not think about, but it will be quite useful for road trips and camping. I agree with Zack that the back is awkward looking, the rear end could definitely be tighter and more streamlined :) and it does resemble the IPace from many angles

High gloss plastic was what Audi called the base interior trim with their introduction of the 2003 B6 A4 1.8T CVT. I remember they even offered it in black, grey and gold plastic trims too. It wasn't available with more expensive Quattro models. They dropped this trim when B7 introduced in 2006, after customer complained of its cheapness and poor wear-and-tear. It tends to crack and pop after years of ownership. Funniest thing was American didn't have this trim, while no one bother to opt for it elsewhere.

The value is that one option is killing the planet, the other not so much. Also, KM's per tank is more an indication of the gas tank size, less to do with fuel efficiency. You can give a pickup truck a 1000Km range with a large enough gas tank.

Personally if I had to go fuel efficient for now I'd stick with a plug in hybrid or standard hybrid. The charging network, the payment systems and the size of the charging network are the concerns I have. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the price of hydro starts creeping up to offset the government rebates so they keep that steady stream of tax revenue coming in. Another thing would be the companies finding ways to safely recycle the batteries at EOL otherwise the whole environmentally friendly thing is for nothing. Great review as always Zack and Andrea!

I also agree with Zach on the door handles...come on manufacturers. That lack of rear wiper is a shame for a vehicle of this price (or ANY price)...can you say safety/visibility? There are affordable ev's though...they just are bare bones tiny boxes that no one wants to buy because their value is not there. i think we are 7-10 years away from ev prices being in the 'affordable' range for a decently equipped vehicle. Of course by then, the inflated prices will seem unaffordable compared to today's prices.

AC cooling in a Tesla has a minor impact on range. The older Teslas with resistance PC heater have a bigger impact on range during cold weather. Usually I turn the temp to lowest to turn off resistance heater and put fan on low for fresh air and use the heat gain from the sun and seat warmers when it's 40-60 degrees F if I need to conserve battery. But if I'm staying local to my city I run heat at 72 degrees for comfort.

Much to like. See Munro live to get more information on how this and Hyundai are made. These vehicles will be better when they switch to L-ion or better yet solid state batteries, continue improving their design like TESLA has been doing and finally produce enough of them so that they are not being sold in limited areas. Joseph is also spot on and I have grave doubts about the US efforts through DOT - more picking winners and losers. Finally living in a norther state range drops significantly during the winter. Lots to like, lots more to hope for in future years. Maybe by 2025 or 2026 may be a sweeter spot to purchase EV.

16:56 OMG! I just realized how much lower the price is for the car in Canada after the currency conversion. After conversion to USD Canada's car would be at the following price in the States RWD SR=$35096 ,RWD LR=41336, AWD LR=42896, GT1 =45,236 , GT2=48,356 . The difference is between 5.8k USD to 8K USD between the models. They really jacked up the price on the GT2 (7.5k USD) and the AWD LR (8K USD)

Congrats for the useful review. I have not big problems with the poor network for charging (having enough autonomy) or with the payments or apps but if I ' d be in a large country like US or Canada I 'd avoid an EV for the next 5 years. The actual benefits regarding to the price compared with gas price will dissapear after enough people will own EV. The prices will be always high for users. Even higher and higher due to actual situation. Conclusion: it is better to buy cars sooner than later.

As for cost to buy BEVs, and there "not being enough" affordable BEVs: the average new-car (ICEVs + BEVs) price in the US has now surpassed USD$47k. It's possible to get some pretty good BEVs for close to that price now (and I don't mean Chevy Bolt or Nissan Leaf, here). The problem isn't the cost of BEVs but the average cost of *all* cars is going up so very rapidly now, including even used cars. And these prices are going up much more quickly than peoples' incomes are...

I think Hyundai and KIA got the door handles right. In areas where you'll likely get snow and ice door handles like any of the EV makers that "pop out" but doesn't have a way to manually pop them out runs the risk of keeping you locked out or at least delayed in getting where you're going. I do agree that traditional door handles might be the solution especially for the lower cost EVs we're all waiting for that has decent range and doesn't look horrible...

    1) Did the designers’ ever test this car in the winter? The rear window wiper is a must when driving when it’s snowing, especially when the snow is wet and sticks.
    2) Need conventional car handles. During a several storms this season in the Northeast US, the storms started out wet with the temperatures above freezing. Then the rain and sleet transitioned to snow when the temperature dropped. After theses long duration storms, there was an underlying layer of ice and frozen snow on the cars. To clean off the cars, conventional practice is to get all the heaters and defrosters going on high for many minutes even before attempting to scrape the ice off. With flushed typed handles, how can you even open the doors when the handles are frozen over?
    3) Apple learned its lesson with the”multi-functional” touch row in the high end Macbboks. People hated it and the new MacBooks no longer have the so called feature. This EV’s AV control row will be similar.

So from Canada, I think they will and hopefully soon revise the EV federal Rebate to increase the eligibility price. Right now Kia and Hyundai are killing it. There is nothing on that list besides the Kia and Hyundai that offer the range and performance they provide. Problem is Canada seems so slow to update that list.
With the lithium ion shortage and chip shortage, this is like the video card craze and probably will take 2 to 3 years to sort itself out. I called my dealership and Ioniq 5 are all sold out for 2022, so any preorders are all for 2023's. The Kia still has some for 2022 which is good cause this will lock the price so if Kia decide to up the price, your safe. Any 2023 order is up to any price fluctuations but hopefully the Hyundai stays the course and keep the same pricing for 2023. I hate to say it, I don't mind them increasing the price of the packages than the trim level, but keep the base trim level down so it still qualifies for the Federal Rebate.
Kia and Hyundai killed it with these cars. Both are awesome and I think a joy to drive. I have an Ioniq 5 Ultimate, came in last week and you can't go back. Yes charging sucks in Canada, but i'm able to deal with it by planning properly.
I still keep the Volvo XC90 for my Long road trips, but the IONIQ 5 is fantastic in the City and the short Road Trips.

Very good observation on both this and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 that don’t have rear wipers! Hyundai has already said they are implementing a digital rear view mirror with camera placed inside below the high rear mount stop lamp - while better than nothing it’s still not enough when rear window is dirty (reduced visibility). They chose design over function…what a great failure by Hyundai and Kia!
