Most fans say their favorite Metallica album is MOP, mine is AJFA. I love the riffs, the arrangements, the lyrics, the drumming and the vibe of the album. It's odd because I'm a bass player and well... you know.
By the way the bass is pretty cool too, you just need to dig out of the mix
@AntonioVideo, my favourite Metallica album is Ride the Lightning
Yeah bruz, And Justice is my fave album too.
I never compare the albums, to try and objectify them. They're art, they're all good.
Call me crazy, but the shortest straw is my favorite song ever made in life
You’re not crazy😎👍
Dyers eve is literally my all time favorite Metallica song. Its so weird i rarely hear people talk about it
dyers eve is easily one of the strongest songs on this album
Same! the best Metallica song no one talks about.
One of my fav Metallica songs. Love the lyrics. The lyrics are so meaningful, and the guitar riffs are crazy fast and precise. Dyres eve is another example (which there are many of) of James’s crazy fast down picking, and kirks amazing soloing. Truly a great song.

This album is some of their best work idc what anyone says
agreed
@Duty and Accountability Media black album video up now btw!
I'm right there with you. Puppets and Lightning are my favorites. But And Justice For All was Metallica's most complex and difficult album. I would argue it was their songwriting peak.
It is, but Lightning was better.
I agree by far there best album
I've been chasing that guitar tone for 30 years!
Master of puppets is badass but and justice for all is by far much more angry, emotional, and aggressive, nothing can touch this album… from anyone at any time. Will forever be my favourite album of all time
I wore my Metallica shirts to school so proudly back then. It was such a great time to be alive. Good video, brotha.
Back before it was trendy to wear band shirts and you got blasted for being a metal head and nerd 🤘🤘🤘🤘
@@pnut3844ableOh my God, thank you man! I was quiet and a nerd in 8th and 9th grade in junior high school. And then Metallica came into my life! (Because of my neighbor!) "THANK YOU ANDREW!" I wore my "And justice for all" T- shirts with pride! I was considered a non-popular nerd until high school. Im not going to lie. I wasn't one of the popular kids for wearing my Metallica shirts, but I WORE them with PRIDE! I wish I still had my original And justice for all T-shirts with Lady Justice on the front and the hammer of justice made out of the bands 4 face's on the back. I have a replica of it now that I wear to this day, I wish I still had the original. Probably worth a lot of moolah!!🤟👍👉😉
Eye Of The Beholder has to be my favorite Justice song, and maybe even my favorite Metallica song overall. The sorta-chuggyness of the song is really nice, and the drums (especially in the intro) have this really nice feeling that add an extra bit of complexity to the whole track. The main point of the song being about freedom of speech, and how sometimes you aren't truly free to speak, hit hard, especially in today's world. That song is one of the reasons why Justice is my favorite album that they've released.
Justice is a masterpiece hands down ! Last record with James screaming, the drums hit like a hammer and Kirk wasn't using a Wawa pedal for every solo .
Drums are pinacle busy on Justice without beign too much or suffocate the music.
That was great about the concept.
But Black Album drums are more heavier, closer to how he hits live
Its slower, fuller, more spacier too so its more hammer.
Justice is more dry, which is totally adapted tob xhat the album was about.
The dynamic.
As much shit as they talk about this album, it's fucking incredible!
To Live Is to Die, One, Dyers Eve & Blackened - my top 4 songs from AJFA
the greatest metal album of all time 🔥🔥
Yessir
The most important American album in American history. Highly prominent, and insanely relevant today; prescient in a way.
One is never overdone or overplayed for my ears. I still love everything about it since I first heard it in 5th grade.
Me too! Never
AJFA is like MOP on steroids! 💪💪
Shortest straw and frayed ends are such good tracks
I think frayed ends is super underrated. It may just be that I'm a bias guitar player, but I absolutely adore the main riff. And the way it chugs on through the verses and prechoruses is really cool, it has this awesome driving effect. Then the bridge has a completely different feel which works really well because of the harmony section before it. It's top 5 metallica for me.
There's no bass on this album!? In all my 34 years of being a life long fan... I NEVER KNEW 😱
the album’s bass parts are metallica’s best kept secret
I noticed it back in early 90s when I had my old van, with a Cassette deck that had bass and treble knobs, and a loudness switch (damn good head unit)... a graphic EQ and two 4-way 100W Pioneer 6X9 speakers in old Polk Audio 5jr home stereo boxes, with this kind of output, I had a lot of bass I could dial in, and I used most all available to make this tape sound right.
@@Ahmedicwell nowadays everybody knows
How have you never heard that?
Justice is and always will be my favorite album
AJFA is a perfect album the way it happened to be made. 10/10
My 2nd favorite album from the band after Kill 'Em All.
This album have the heaviest riff guitar ever made remember headbanging with my Friend when i was young !
Frayed Ends is definitely my favorite from the album, and could even possibly be my all time favorite Metallica track. The insane time signitures, and the amazing middle sections guitar solos and unique drumming makes it possibly their most technical song they've ever wrote, and it's amazing musically. It's like this albums Master Of Puppets title track for me. I feel it and Disposable Heroes should get more recognition for being their most ground breaking masterpieces as it shows the peak of their abilities. Yet I get it, for some people it's more about interpretation and what your ear likes instead of actually recognizing the creativity and uniqueness. Which makes a lot more sense, but damn. Though that second riff after the intro will never not be badass and will have me headbanging for days
Also In Lars defense for Shortest Straw, they've almost never played it live since it was released and that intro is a mindfuck to remember to count even if it's real simple on the outside lmfao
Fucking oath, the lyrics articulate mental health issues in a great way the multiple time sig changes and the way the solo slowly comes in and then rips makes it my favourite on the album too
The intro to shortest straw the first chug is a "Pick up note" before the 1 of the bar.
The rhythm section James plays behind Kirks solo on this song is fukin unreal. Listen to the isolated track. Just wow!
I've been listening to Frayed on repeat for weeks. I've been listening to it since at least the early 90s. I was born in 82, so I was six or seven when it dropped. I'm 42 now and love this album just as much as when I was a pre-teen in 1994.
@@setharnold3699 99% of riffs on this album were fucking unreal.
this deserves millions of views.
share with your friends to help it get there ;)
6 month hazing? More like 6 years…..
The best album of all time, and Blackened is the best song of all time. Every single song is a masterpiece.
People say they sold out with Fade to Black because of acoustic guitars, and there are even those who said they sold out when they released Kill'Em All because apparently releasing the album is the selling out
DUDE SERIOUSLY KEEP THIS UP! From a HUGE Metallica fan…..you killed it! This video you made kicks ass! Hell yeah! Just liked and subscribed and hit the bell with all notifications included! Let’s go! Haha! Oooooooh Yeah heaaaaa! (Papa Het oooh yell)
much appreciated! load video going up later today!
Ooooooh yeaaaaaa
I played the shit out of my tape when I first got it. I only became aware that there's no bass well into the 90s. TLITD is my second favourite Metallica instrumental after Orion. Second side was as vital as the first one for me at the time, but I've since realised that good as the songs are, they aren't Blackened or One for the most part. Loved the t-shirts that came out around this album too, especially The Shortest Straw.
I'm shocked you don't have more subs tbh, You just earned a new one!
thank you!! part 5 is up now if you havent seen it and part 6 will be up tomorrow!
Great video and better narration! Keep it up!
I LOVE and admire the sound of Justice that the Het/Ulrich machine created....
Dry, Heavy, Angry frequencies so thick no bass guitar sound was needed ~
From 9:00 to 11:30 I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
The peak, It was all up to there and all down from there.
awesome vids bro!
Every track on this album is great. This is my second favorite Metallica album without a doubt 💯
Tbf I will say, as a music frequency nerd, I can always hear the bass, it just sounds a little quiet to me
This album is a masterpiece. It so heavy and Metallica was the most piss off they ever sound.
I love this album, just wish they turned up the treble a bit more
EMG pups and a Mark ll c+, and scoop those mids!! Most brutal thrash sound ever,i dont care what anyone says.
Absolutely man! I’ve spent years trying to get this tone! Finally got a mark 3 (best I could do!) and it does sound close!
4:40 only to be greeted by…
“Dick’s Sporting Goods” ad .
This is what I get for not engaging with the outside world enough.
Well put, bro 💯💯💯
9:00-- I completely disagree with your opinion about "The Shortest Straw" being a weak link. Why do you think the group selected at the open up side two of the cassette and the LP?! Other than that, this is a very enjoyable take you've done on the album up to this point
Although I don’t agree with everything, which is to be expected, these videos are awesome and I coulda sworn you had a lot more subs. Oh well, I just joined in !
best album of all time
80s Metallica didn’t have one bad song, and personally I think Justice is back to back and never falls off. The riffs are so chunky and amazing. And I get if your a bassist you might not like the mixing choice, but as a guitar player, I love it. (Btw one stands alone as the best)
There’s something I find to be really interesting about this project. As much as people tend to act as if there’s too many flaws with it, the band included. This album is still in my opinion peak Metallica. You can also notice by the views on each review that this album is possibly the most pivotal piece when it comes to Metallica‘s history.
my personal favorite album of all time is and justice for all. in my opinion there are no songs that i will ever skip while listening to it. and i do think its metallica's best album.
I get every retrospective video from any uploader is essentially the uploaders opinions and everyone has a right to their opinions.
But...
Glossing over Harvester of Sorrow and saying "I have nothing to say about the frayed ends of sanity".
Also... "this album feels like one long song".
Okay, that's how you genuinely feel. You're free to feel the way you want. But damn, you're takes on a lot of these retrospectives are.....not sure what word to use here.
My main issue is trying to figure out why I'm still watching these?
Welp...its ok to be wrong sometimes. ❤
I prefer And Justice, as opposed to Masters
I’ll say this for justice, it has my favourite riff they ever wrote - clean section of to live is to die
Language of the Mad🤘🏻
...And Justice For All.
Part of my twin peaks of Thrash, next to Megadeth's Rust In Peace. However, I think I might have to give the edge to Justice with that awesome guitar tone, and the drums having what I like to call, the Justice Click. Plus James' vocals were pretty fantastic as well.
Also, given the shit Metallica got for doing a music video makes me wonder what reaction Megadeth got, what with Dave putting out four music videos from the Peace Sells... and So Far... before Het and Co. even considered doing a music video. Now there's a question to ponder...
Yeah I remember it was some huge deal that Metallica was making a video....but I guess one difference was the video for One was "artsy" for a metal band. Most metal videos I remember were mostly the band on stage.
Their best album, imho
My favorite metallica album even though im not a metallica fan i prefer other thrash bands like kreator slayer anthrax and even flotsam and jetsam 😉 but i can't deny this album i'd give it an 8.5/10
Very good
Now the world is gone Im just One🤘🏻
Well harvester of sorrow is the best
That riff. Harvester Live in Moscow is Metalicas greatest achievement.
@@gentelmanjunkie542 literally can't live without witching that performance and Creeping Death once a week, I frinkig live that concert
The "Vocal filter" on Eye of the Beholder isn't as prominent on the OG 1988 pressing, but after the Black album came out the new pressings were worse, and the double kicks on that one song weren't as loud as they'd originally been either.
thats super interesting, i didn't know that!
@@Ahmedic Eye of the Beholder and Shortest Straw were the 1st two recorded (the way they ended up on the album) produced by Mike Clink before they brought Flemming Rasmussen back again to do the rest of AJFA. The lack of bass and reverb was caused by James, Lars and finally oversight; Flemming would've never let that happen if he was properly alerted in time.
I was looking for this comment. I would say that there is no filter on my original copy at all. When I heard the remastered version from a couple years back I was surprised by how the vocals sounded. Feels like they used the wrong take on the remaster.
I hate the production on this album. Way too dry. No bass.
Puppets and Lightning sounds much better.
Both of which had the bass significantly turned down .
@b miller only realized this recently when someone mentioned how the bass was "felt and not heard." going back to Ride the Lightning, you really dont hear the bass distinctly, but without it, the tone just sucks.
@@531ff Not as much as Justice.
We'll never hear another album like AJFA. Metallica conquered the hill with that one.
Sorry, but ive always hated the drums on this album.I rushed out on my lunch break to buy this the day it was released, and ive never been so disappointed.Probably because we'd been spolied by RTL and MOP.Funnily enough,i loved harvester of sorrow.
I'm one of those fans who doesn't rate this album as a whole. There's some outstanding tracks (Harvester, One, Blackened, Eye) , but I think it's over produced and complex simply for the sake of being complex rather than making the songs better. As you say in the video the songs kinda of blend together after a while,. I was way happier with TBA simply because they stripped back their sound. Great video. Subbed. :)
You realize as if this album is complex all the metal that followed makes no sense to exist
This album is not over produced. If anything, it's under produced with lack of bass, shoddy drum sound, etc. I agree with everything else you said.
First, fantastic job 👏 👍!! Now, my personal take. Eye, vocals separate 2 narratives, the person then the government which I have think fits. Straw, lyrically pushes that efforts feeling futile, the solo erratic dives in erratic modes but somehow fits also. Harvey, seems omage to slow but brutal soul similar to Eye but focused on ONE( pun intended 😂). Fray, is a back and forth emphasizing illogical in a logical way. In defense of Kirk, the ajfa album was the LAST album that wasn't oversaturated wah 🙄solos. Thanks for the video and opening for my opinion. Looking forward to the other videos. 🤘
there BETTER be a megadeth retrospective soon….
amazing video.
there'll probably some videos between the end of this retrospective and the megadeth one because i might play around with the format of these videos, but you'll def get it in the future
also thanks for watching!!
Les Claypool of Primus tried out for Metallica. They told him he was too good
Should this guy be the one doing retrospectives of this band ? Talking about some of the greatest tracks on here are @ fatiguing “
It doesn't matter who says what they are the best from all the rest the greatest band in the world willing to make different kinds of albums where other bands are stuck making the same album over and over again where they don't grow as musicians and the break apart or stuck to small crowds of people while metallica are stadium success making millions and millions of dollars that's why they are the road dogs 🐕 hetfield says we never stop never quit because we are the mighty metallica
MOP is the best metal album of all time. And AJFA is the best Metallica written!
In fairness, Metallica said they were never release a video... That's why fans were disappointed. It wasn't some arbitrary thing, it was what Metallica said many times over
But they didn't say that, they were only against making a video for the record companies as MFN were genuinely pushing Metallica to make a video for Escape in 1984 and they outright refused so it left a bad taste and they said they'd do one when they are allowed full artistic control which they did when they did One
My favorite album of all time!! People shit on the black album...but after an album like justice there's nowhere to really go but down lol
TBA is the superior produced album.
@jaymann5180 100% I just meant the structures of the songs and the complexity
@@demonicon1 Metallica got rid of the complexity and structure because they thought AJFA sounded bloated at the time. Both James and Lars, specifically Lars, wanted to make simpler songs with better production as a deterrence from AJFA.
This album is half some of the best songs theyve ever made, other half kinda forgetable. A mixed feeling album, but its a good feeling.
No offence- but HOS is one of my favourites...
I couldn't believe what he said
Well I can safely say there was no justice for all on this album yes the way the songs are played is amazing the sound is just an atrocity tho
Great album would of sounded even better with the bass you feel all the anger seething on this album
There is lots of bass on AJFA. You lose your credibility. Hell, you can even hear JUST BASS on a few songs on certain parts. The issue is the bass got muddied in to the mix. Just because you saw a video where a guy said they lowered the volume of all the bass, doesn't mean there is no bass on the album.
AJFA is the best a;bum
hi
hey
Agree. The track order is the worst part of this album. To much dead air in the middle of the record.
This album is so good, the band barely plays songs from it live anymore because the parts are hard to play. That, or Lars is just too lazy to practice them. And we all know he never practices. 😂
Lars can barely play One.
James Hetfield is a of stars of band Metallica, but Kirk is the first star of band❤😊.
This album is sooo overrated it only has 3 legendary songs but those 3 don't make up for the other 40 minutes of music on this album it is way to long and repetitive and boring. They should've waited a bit longer so they could have more inspiration, it's a real shame becaude it's tone is soooo good.
The only weak song on this album is one
first
Jason was an average bass player at the time. He won the lottery and should be grateful instead, he bitches to anyone who will indulge him, and many do.
Jason was a better bass player than Cliff. Most of Cliff's contribution was his classical compositions and him turning the bass into an electrical guitar, but his playing was sloppy when listening to his isolated playing. Jason was precise, accurate, and definitely under appreciated.
AJFA was metallicas high point in their career. After that, they sucked.
Why don't you write a better record
One of the worst records ever...tunes were weak and production was weaker. Lars and James are beyond fake!! They mite have been a decent rock band..but adding hammet ended that.
Best records ever*
