Yeeeeah waking up to see yourself in the mirror and dissociate because you don't recognize the image anymore stings. Especially when a close one says "you are loved" but you feel like they love the you they used to know.

I know these stories are a dime a dozen, but this song actually saved my life when I was a teenager. I would put my headphones on and drift. Thank you for maybe exposing a new generation to some of the best music ever played.

Me also. This song has brought me out of the darkness on more than one occasion. Something as simple as realizing that you are not the only one that feels that way. I got Metallica tatooed on my arm when I was 16 yrs old. I am 49 now. So thankful that I was able to live through that period. There was nothing like going to get their albums the day they were released. It was magical!
This band has got me through some tuff times, bought my first Metallica album when I was 11 years old I'm now 48.. They are a true gift to the world.

Something I love about this song is that the cause of the depression is never stated. Usually it's a breakup, or a death, but in Fade to Black it's left unmentioned. This really just allows everyone to connect to the song no-matter the situation as the causation is different but the emotions that ensue are shared. This just allows people like me to relate to it even more.
Back in the day when this song came out there was no mental health awareness. We were basically told to get over it in a way. This song made us all see we were not alone and that alone helped many of us get through life.

The amount of times that I’ve seen people say that this song *saved* them is a testament to the brilliance and sincerity of the track.

My number one, all-time favorite song by Metallica. This is the first song of theirs I ever listened to, and it literally saved my life. I was a teen, lost and spiraling into a hole I saw no way out of. Hearing this song let me know I wasn't alone and gave me something to cling to. I'm finally getting to see them live in November, and I can't wait. I still struggle, and when the demons are too loud for me to hear anything else, I play this song (as well as others that I've found over the years that resonate in my soul) and it helps me remember how far I've come and that I'm not alone. Peace and love to everyone, and if you read this, you're not alone.
I pray you find Jesus my sister, throw your burdens upon him, there is nothing too much for him. Read the Bible it's God's love letter to us. He loves you. There's a certain kind of peace in knowing that God has a plan for you. You are not alone Jesus is with you, you just have to acknowledge that he is with you. MAN - I'm a long-time Metalica fan (even saw them open for Ozzy back in the day!), and I used to hear Fade To Black every day. I was working in Camden, NJ in 1986 fixing up houses to sell and a radio station in Philly used to play it several times every day. Fast forward to 2013 when I was handed a 2-to-5-year death sentence, no thanks to ALS (AKA Lou Gehrig's disease). Here I am, 10 years later, and I hadn't heard this song in like 15 years, not knowing how important and poignant it would be to me later in life. Thanks to the legalization of cannabis, my progression has slowed to the point my neurologist says I'm "stabilized."
Now, there comes a time for everyone with this horrific affliction where the only nerves left functioning are the eyes - a condition known as being "locked in." (All the while, the patient is acutely aware of what's happening because ALS only attacks the distant motor neurons, but not the eyes). I'm not sure what the future holds...I may need to turn it all off at some point, but my current train of thoughts insist that, even in the face of such palpable horror, never EVER give up on hope.

its been since 98 that i lost my brother in a car crash and this song held me togegther through his funreal and still holding me together to this day this song became my war cry i still cry and raise my eyes to the sky to hear him say to me every time i hear him say youre ok

I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 53 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...
Very well said. This song is genius and the reactions to it in the 80's and early 90's was so stupid, this isn't a song about death it's quite the opposite. The lyrics are dark but the musicianship and they way the song is structured is very insipiring and uplifting. Like a warm glove that surruonds you in the darkness, just holding on for one more day. Feelings dont last forever, just hang on. I'm your age and while I didnt get Metallica into my late teens (And Metallica hardly heard or seen in Australia until Justice for All) this song and Ride the Lightening always makes me somehow feel glad to be alive. I can imagine living in a world without this music and how glum and unsatisifying life would be.
I hope your finding ways to cope to mental illness, it's been a battle most of my life, a battle I'm finding easier to fight as I'm in my 50's.

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada... which according to the rest of Canada and the world might as well be Australia. They all think Canada ends in Montreal... LoL!!! Speaking of Montreal, I got to see Metallica Aug 11 and 13th and another great band on the 12th, The Warning. What a weekend!!! Yeah getting older sure does help, knowing that "It's not the end of the world" and to just give "It" time really helps. I still deal with depression but it's not as "dire" as it was because I know how it works and it won't last and those thoughts of doom and gloom are a thing of the past. Music is the greatest anti-depressant and Metallica is my prescription...
I am 55 and remember exactly where I was, (sitting on the floor of my friend Chris room) how things smelled, what I was wearing, etc when I heard this for the first time at about 16. . All my senses on were on high alert. This song spoke to my soul. I was me, then I was gone, over and over through my life. I am barely me now, but still here somehow.

I’ve been a huge Metallica fan since 1985 and the serenity this song gives me has never changed. It’s message is one thing but the melodic beauty of the music is beautiful. It has saved many many lives. When played live James usually says to the audience - you are not alone. Reach out for help.

I saw an interview with James one time where he was saying that right after this album came out. He went over to this girls house that he didn't know very well and her sister kept playing this song over and over. Neither one of them knew that it was James who sang the song. The girls sister kept saying with tears in her eyes " This song means something to this person. " He never told them it was him.
So excited that you're reacting to this one. This song has saved so many lives. James wrote it after all their gear was stolen, including the amp his mother gave him before dying from cancer when James was still a teenager. If you don't mind a recommendation, I would love to see you give Alice In Chains a reaction. They were going to tour together but Layne (front man) was in no condition to tour so it was called off. Alice in Chains are a phenomenal band with some amazing music. Fun fact they had the first ever EP to debut at number one on the Billboard charts and that EP was written and recorded in a week. A good introductory song for them is Would. The music video works since it'll help you to distinguish between Jerry and Layne singing. Those harmonies are simply beautiful.

This song, I've known, performed, and played for over 30 years - your explanation of it is rather unique. Especially the interplay between lyrics and guitars. Hats off my brother. I think it is so beautiful. The darkness and hardness combined with the beautiful, melodic softness. I’ve been listening to it for decades and it never gets old. There was a time when this song eased my pain knowing that my struggle was understood by someone else and it keeps me in touch with the depths from which I’ve come and reminds me of how truly blessed my life is now. I doubt life would seem as sweet today without having gone through it. I’m so glad I didn’t give up. The darkest hour is truly just before the dawn.
This masterpiece dropped in 1984. Written by an emotionally distraught 20/21 year old, who had gone through hell. The loss of his mother, their equipment being stolen. So he sits down and writes this absolute gem. A song that almost 40 years later resonates with 10s of millions on the same frequency. Different reasons why, but still a shared energy.

I grew up in this came out. I was going through epilepsy and I was alone and my family and my parents. I don't even know you're. My town taught me that I wasn't good enough. So sometimes listening to this music helped me. When I was alone I wish that everything could have been different.I wish I could have been better for my family for my town.

Thank you for your support, this song became very important to me, I have heard it years ago, but a while ago its meaning became my reality, before I was a young boxer with a life, then everything went to hell, I fell into a very strong depression, my body changed oneathletic to one who is very overweight. I was left alone. one night after work, I was reaching a very dark point and crying I thought about ending everything once and for all, the playlist put this song on I listened to it
while I cried, and I thought that I didn't want to end up like this, being a shadow of what I once was. I still have depression, but... I decided that I have to go back, to everyone who read me at this time, guys, look for help, look for something to hold on to and keep fighting.
When I feel down and listen to this song, the verses can tell more or less how I feel and that's empathy. When the solos come afterwards, as you said, I also feel a lot of push back. And in the final solo I feel like I'm free from my pain. Such a great sense of release. Thanks for your review. It helped me explain some unknown feelings. 💯

I ended up here on your channel because I was having a panic attack and thought watching people enjoy life would pick me up out of this depressive state. Don’t worry everyone my will to live is strong and in no way would ever injure myself. Your take on this song is perfect, the voice in your head can bring hard and confusing thoughts but when the solos kick in, that is the way out of the dark place. It is showcasing passion, creativity, technical ability. As the solos get progressively more technical we get closer to overcoming the lyricist and the song ends with the solo fading out, leaving the impression that the darkness was overcome

Thankfully it seems like he always found a reason to keep going, this song probably saved my life as a teen, starts out dark then comes back, then dark, then bright through solos, by the end of the song I felt he was speaking of my people, there were others feeling the same way, then the outro with that intensity it’s hard not to feel just a little more energised and/or capable to live another day.
In listening to this I found my crew, felt like I belonged somewhere in the uncertain mess of confusion that is teenage life at times, and we were in it together, loyal to one another, stood up for each other, and actually laughing at society’s idea of who “we” (The Metallers/Metalheads) were!
I’ve had mates over the years that were into Rap/Hip Hop that were actually surprised when they actually gave the music a chance, one mate thanked me said he couldn’t really understand that part of me, but got it after listening.
Sir, you are so correct! I am 54 yrs old n life long Metallica fan, first heard them on Metal Massacre comp album. When Fade to Black came out, I was what 17ish n it said my life, I wanted to just check out. Listening to gave me hope, you just lost n the beautiful melody at the end n calms you down. It got a bad rap in the media that it was causing suicide n couldn't be farther from the truth, saved alot of us! N I Love that James uses it at shows to let people they are not alone, WE ARE THE METALLICA FAMILY!

Reading a lot about how this song saved lives, and i can't relate since when this song came i wasn't even born, and when i first hear metallica at the age of 6 was around the black album at 94. Growing up i love the entire album and this song specially even when i didn't knew the meaning behind it (english not my first language).
Now as an old man, even when some people can find this song sad or depressing for the lyrics, i feel it liberating.
A song that can portrait the pain and agony that can take over your whole self in such a beautiful way is just amazing, more with the fact that hear a song about someone that can feel like that doesn't make you feel alone in this world.

This is such a masterful song. Composition and lyrical content are just off the charts. It pulls at the heart strings. People back in the day tried to censor the song saying it would encourage s*I cide when in fact it did the total opposite for many others including myself. Art is meant to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. I just want to say to everyone that it will one day get better. It pains me greatly to think of what I almost threw away to try and escape from my trauma. I have a whole lifetime ahead of me and I feel blessed to live it. You got this and I’m rooting for you!

Growing up in RI one radio station played heavy metal and that was 94HJY the home of Rock & Roll. Metal was late and hosted by a very big Metallica fan from the beginning Mike “The Doctor Gonsalves” How are Ya! who we lost in The Station in club fire. He brought Metallica to the masses of Rhode Island, Mass and Connecticut in the 80’s. I thank my blessings for him or I would have missed out big time.

dude im 51 ive been listening to this band since I was 16 years old and I never thought of this in the way you just explained how you saw it. Bro, Tom Mac vids brought me here and Phil C kept me here, I been a Metallica fan since 1984 and this song made me a fan for life. Your interpretation is exactly how I always took the song too. Those powerful solos are inspirational, and uplifting. As a person who has been down there, it is always that little something in life that keeps you going. They could have let the song die dark, but they ended it with twin solos on a high note. I always thought that was purposeful.

This song is truly sad and you can tell what it’s about immediately, like that first line I mean damn ”life it seams to fade away” that’s already deep then the line “I have lost the will to live, simply nothing more to give” I mean that’s just deep and that’s why I love this song I have felt what this song describes and this song really helped.
I think what makes this song stand out is how it shows that in despair, we lie to ourselves. James said said he had no reason to live, and that he had nothing more to give. But he kept fighting, and gave the world decades of great music ❤️

One of their best, and it’s on their second album. And yes, it has helped lots of people express thoughts they had that they never acted upon, because the song makes us feel less alone in our despair. Even if the message is of darkness and pain and loss, and a lot of James Hetfield’s lyrics are, they give us a way to get that energy out. Doesn’t help to have some of the greatest solos Kirk Hammet has ever played on the song too, there’s a reason Hetfield calls him The Ripper.
If you want similar tracks lyrically from them, “Bleeding Me” or the trio of “Unforgiven” songs would be good to see you listen to. If you prefer a more up song or two, “Fuel” can get you pumped, “Nothing Else Matters” can make you feel connected, and “Atlas Rise!” is good to shout along to.
I've been listening to this song for 40 years (since released) and I gotta say you've got one of the best takes I've ever heard about it. I mean really man, that's a great interpretation.

I never considered this perspective/interpretation - and I really like your take on that.
I always heard the end of verse energy as the anger/frustration of the mood swings that comes from depression and anxiety.
My daughter suffered with depression and anxiety for years, and so I saw how destructive it was at times. I also heard the composition as the mood swings, and guitar outro is just a build up and send off.
But I think I really like your interpretation a lot more. 🙂
Metallica is a great band. There was a marked maturation from Kill ‘em All to Ride the Lightning. Kill ‘em All is a very good album with some fantastic songs, but they’re mostly similar tempo and Kirk’s solos have some similarities. Each successive album to And Justice for all increased their complexities of songwriting - riffs, melodies and lyrics.
I need to listen to all of their albums. I’m hooked!

Somehow when picking up the back catalog after I started listening to Metallica (pretty much when One hit Mtv and my head exploded), Ride the Lightning was the last one i picked up. The first time i heard this song i probably rewound the tape (yeah cassettes!) 20 times to relisten. The slow "with feeling" switch to the pick up in the middle hit me a lot and this is probably still my favorite song of theirs. There are a lot of great songs but this one takes it for me.

That's why Metallica stands above all other metal bands. They give you so many different styles of metal. They're thrash, groove, sludge, tempo, melodic. One of the great bands of all-time.
