  • Always Board Never Boring takes a quick break from restoring his 1990 copy of HeroQuest to check the contents of the copy of Advanced HeroQuest that was kindly donated to the channel by his good friend Dale. In this video he witters on about some common issues with secondhand copies of Advanced HeroQuest, and runs through a list of the components, including those that aren't really essential to play the game.

    Yay, my copy is 100% complete and it was pre-painted by someone who clearly loved it. (Okay, it's missing the binder spine.) Looking forward to seeing you play this, the rules are very intimidating.

      The rules are quite dense, and I remember not having the slightest clue when I was a kid. Once you're into it, it's not so bad. Hopefully will have more coverage soon.

    I’ve been watching all your Advanced Heroquest videos, which are awesome and has prompted me to pick up a lovely condition copy on eBay.
    Advanced Heroquest was the game that got me into wargames and warhammer.
    My mum bought me it when I was 11 in 1990.
    There was an advert for the companion paint set that led us to games workshop and the rest is history 😅
    Thanks for the inspiration and great content!

    Take the rule book and file it away for posterity. There are loads of fan versions that combine the main book, the expansion and do a good job of tidying up the rules. I recommend Enhanced Advanced Heroquest, but there are others.

      Yeah, the fan community has spent years adapting and developing this game. I don't think any two people play it exactly the same way as they all pick and choose what they like and add their own twists. I'm a bit of a traditionalist. The first step for me is to restore everything original.

I did end up with a 2nd hand copy of AHQ but never used it . sadly most of it is missing now or got water damaged . and the mini's got incorporated into various armies or converted , one thing that always struck me as odd with my set is I had two sets of the heroes both missing the wizard

    I had to buy a German set for all the minis and dungeon tiles. I then was lucky to find an English listing that included the box, all the tiles, the doors and tokens. All my set is missing is the actual rulebook, but I printed a copy for personal use.

    I have 4 of those doors and always wondered where they came from. They were in a copy of heroquest that I bought at a flea market 25 years ago for $10!. 2 have working doors, one has a broken hinge and the 4th one is just the door frame.

    I've been wanting a copy of this for a while. I only got back into miniatures a couple of years ago after a 25 year break. I uses to play loads of regular heroquest back when it first came out and my best friends older brothers and his friends would play this. We never got a chance to sadly. I used to have so many of the oldhammer skaven it features. I still have one giant rat ogre from this period so that's the beginning of my project! It seems that for a complete copy in good shape you pay 150-200quid.
    Is the solo play any good do you think? I doubt I will find anyone to play it with once I do get it but it holds so much nostalgia that I don't care! I really wanted this back when I was kid and it's on the top of mid-life crisis shopping list now!

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Рік тому

      Solo is good. There's no AI for the enemies as such. You roll on a chart to get a basic idea of what they will do, but the rules tell you to apply your common sense and just play the enemies as you think they would behave and try your best to kill the heroes.

    Hi! What foam insert/organizer do you recommend for Advanced Heroquest ?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  6 місяців тому +1

      I don't. It's a game intended to be expanded with lots of extra miniatures, and the box itself isn't very sturdy. My tokens are in a tackle box inside the box, and all the map tiles and books are also in the box. All the miniatures are magnetised and stored in Really Useful Box crates lined with rubber steel (I have videos about that process on the channel).

    Thanks for the vid! I was curious what the back of the box showed. (For some reason, I can't seem to find a single image of the back ANYWHERE lol!) Do you know if anywhere they show the box back? (I guess I could just ASK what it shows if you could be so kind. Was it just photos of the game board, or perhaps some people playing it I assume?)

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching. I just did a Google search to check for "Advanced Heroquest back of box" and several images came up. You can normally find eBay listings that show the back of the box too.
      The back doesn't feature people playing it. That's not really GW's style for their boxes; more of an MB thing. Instead there is a panel on the left talking about heroes and showing the painted heroes. A panel on the right talks about skaven and has some skaven banner artwork. The central panel shows a game in progress, and lists all of the components. Hope that helps.

But I appreciate letting me know the gist of it, as I was always curious. I read that this game was also recommended 14 and up, so I assume that listing was on the back too, (unless that came from elsewhere.) • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't want to say one way or the other, really. I much prefer AHQ to Warhammer Quest, so for me it's the better pick. But for questing in the Old World, you are very much covered with a complete and fully expanded Quest like you already have. For me, AHQ more accurately captures that sense of the grim horror of the Old World, but the game is less fleshed out than Quest, which obviously has lots of heroes and a couple of expansions, besides the very comprehensive RPG book.
      A few things worth noting: All your HeroQuest heroes and monsters have rules in AHQ, as does the furniture, and even the board (which is used as a special maze level). Furthermore, there are simple rules for replaying all of the base game HeroQuest missions using AHQ rules. Finally, as with the other games, there's a lot of fan content for AHQ if that sort of thing interests you. There was only ever one expansion for AHQ and it's very hard to find and incredible expensive, but as it was just a rules book and tokens, it's pretty easy to recreate using online downloads.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому

      I am. I have a strange relationship with Advanced HeroQuest. I rate it as one of the very best dungeon crawlers, but this is the third time I've owned it. When I was a kid I never fully appreciated it and it ended up being a toolbox for Warhammer Quest until the great purge. The second time, I remembered how good it was, but found it quite miserable to play, and at the time I wasn't keeping games that I didn't get to the table. But I regretted it as soon as it was gone. This time I'm really going to put some attention into it.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому

      One thing I've never done with it is translate the HeroQuest missions to the Advanced rules set. There's actually a section in the rules to do it. Not sure why I never did that before, but I think it might be funny to try. I'm also downloading all the extra content from Ye Old Inn, so I have Terror in the Dark as well. I have a good game group now that I think would get a kick out of it too.

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 3 роки тому

      I never did the HQ stuff either. Probably a better way to play all those missions. There's an HQ mission in WD that is pretty complex too.
      AHQ is very old school D&D with the management of resources and henchmen. Torches, rope, rations, door spikes, etc were all limited items that you traded the weight for gold as the adventure progressed. You can see that in some of the design here.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому +1

      @@johnmiddleton4291 It's the detailed management of resources that I think makes the game so special. Is there any other board game where you can make a will to pass on your money? Especially where you even have to pay the moneylender fee to access the money from the will? And being successful with the wizard was an interesting challenge, with spells eating ingredients each time, and a selection of spells that did so much more than just zapping the monsters.

      Yeah, a few years back you could get it fairly easily for a low price, but when I scouted around eBay the prices were incredibly high. I'm assuming that's because of people wanting the awesome miniatures, because the game is bloody awful.

  • @DavidGreen_au

    I couldn't agree more about the box. It's rubbish! My box has travelled very little since its original purchase (new) and it is in less than ideal condition.
    I remember being *very* impressed with the doors when I first saw them, and then soon realised that they were too fragile looking, and somewhat impractical to use.
    I remember finding the random dungeon generation rules a bit tedious. After one playtest, I abandoned it in favour of pre-generated scenarios like in HeroQuest. But eventually, I just reverted back to the HeroQuest, but used the figurines from AHQ.
    Did you ever see Dungeon & Dragons published under Parker Bros.? I picked that one up only for the figurines. Never played it even once. It also had Tree 'furniture' which I thought was great for HQ 'outdoor' scenario elements.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 роки тому

      The doors were a great idea, but just didn't work in practice. They probably could have done something where the doors popped in and out, or fitted into a slot instead. Still... top marks for trying.

    The Advanced Hero Quest miniatures sprue never came with any shields for the henchmen.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

      There was a separate small sprue for the henchmen shields (actually two, one with eight shields on it and one with four). The shields were never included with Mighty Warriors. Every miniature in AHQ got a shield except for the wizard and elf (which is mentioned in the contents section of the rules book).
