- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Always Board Never Boring starts a three-part playthrough of Advanced Heroquest, in which one (slightly) brave dwarf and his two companions attempt to escape from the clutches of a greenskin horde. All they have to do is make it up through three levels of dank and dangerous dungeons to complete their task. Will they survive?

Thank you!!! Can't wait till the next level! I would love to see you make this an ongoing series. There is not enough good Advanced Heroquest content on UA-cam.
Well this adventure will be three parts, so we will see how much interest there is in that and see where we go from there. There will also be some painting, a video on little tweaks people can make to some of the rules, and probably more besides. I also have Ethel's third and final solo mission for The Frozen Horror coming up on the channel soon.
Also waiting, this was great, love your style, very entertaining and informative!
I agree I'd love to see some more content on AH. I haven't watched the frozen horror to avoid spoilers but great thing with this is that it's custom generated!
This was brilliant! Excellent story telling and a clear explanation of what was going on. I don’t have very high hopes that Sleepy or his companions are going to ever see daylight again.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you liked it. I'm sure Squishy, Stumpy, and Sleepy will be just fine...
I enjoy your playthroughs so much, fun watch
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoy them.
Loving all the Heroquest and Advanced Heroquest vids, looking forward to the continuing adventures. Would also be great to see you have a proper group session sometime, keep up the grear work!
Glad you are enjoying the coverage. Group sessions are very hard to deal with. The way I approach playthroughs is completely wrong for a group game, and because I have to shoot when I can fit it in around real life it's not that easy to get people all in one place at the right time to do it. That's not to say it won't ever happen though.
Love it…. Really appreciate your videos!
Something strangely comforting, from my childhood. Long forgotten. Intrigue into the pages of other worlds.
And love advanced Heroquest! My kind of game. I have the rules now.
This is what cursed city should have been like….
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked the video. Advanced Heroquest is so much fun.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
I’m so impressed. Super immersive!
This was an incredible video, can't wait for more! This is by far the best play through I've seen of advanced hero quest. I'd love to see you play through the 1995 Warhammer quest at some point adding your narrative spin
Thanks, that's really kind of you. I'm afraid I gifted away my copy of Warhammer Quest a long time ago and I couldn't justify the cost of buying a set to run on the channel at the moment.
Wow direct in the intro. The adventure start the hard way 😅
After generating a less than impressive hero in Sleepy I felt his adventure should start with a disaster.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I totaly see the lore.
I just finish the video.
It was very fun and entertaining to watch. But as a player I think there are a bit to much of dice roll and table to read. So thank you for the editing
There is a ton of rolling on tables, but once you are used to it, it's very quick to do.
I really enjoyed this whole series. It was like a episode of game of thrones. I’d watch something like this every week! You could make it into a whole mini series!
It had a short, self-serving character, someone lost a limb, and someone died in a foolish display of bravery and honour. Hmm... Game of Thrones is right! Thanks so much for the high praise. There will definitely be more Advanced Heroquest playthroughs on the channel when I get a chance. I am currently painting up the boxed set so I can use the official heroes next time.
LOL! I thought Sleepy was going to take a dirt nap. 😄
Great video! Can't wait! I voted for poor old sleepy to not make it.
He still has plenty of time for a nap. He's got two more levels to crawl through, yet.
This is brilliant ... looking forward to seeing what happens next. Keep up the superb content 👌
Thanks for the kind words. Part 2 goes live on Wednesday.
So good! Also it has got me excited to finally get my copy to the table! Thanks again for this and looking forward to level 2
Thanks for watching. Good luck in your own adventures!
I have seen many videos of advanced Heroquest playtrough, and I this is a good one: fast, concise and without spending a lot of time explaining rules and rolls. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words. I'm pleased you liked it.
Stellar prologue!
Thank you.
This is just the best! I didn't know how to handle with the corridors and doors when the layout didn' fit to my dice roles now it all makes more sense to me and I can't wait to start my next solo play now! 😍
Thanks!
Thanks. I'm glad the video was helpful. It's great fun tromping through these random dungeons. I hope you don't step in any mantraps!
I remember getting the original heroquest game as a kid for Christmas 1988 I still have it oooh the memories brilliant video my man😊
Thanks. Glad you liked the video. I do a lot of coverage of HeroQuest on the channel too.
Really really enjoyable. It takes me back to why I loved this game so much and I’ve just dug my copy out of storage!
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun with this three-part series, and I have lots more Advanced Heroquest content planned.
"Please don't break,
Please don't break.."
I totally get this. My doors lasted quite well since 1995, but I foolishly decided to glue one in place as a kid 😖
Those doors are not up to the challenge of keeping out pesky adventurers.
Beautiful narrative opening. Love your writing!
Thank you. I really appreciate the kind words.
Well .. that was a dark opening narration, welcome to the perilous world of grim adventure. Fab game, saving part two for tomorrow .. I dread to think what aweful horrors await them, future you was right, its very fun.
Advanced Heroquest has always seemed very bleak and dangerous to me (hence my choice of opening narration), but it's so much fun running the gauntlet.
Thanks! Love AHQ, thanks for making this great content.
Thanks for watching.
Well... That introduction got straight to the point... It reminded me of that squad of heroes that, tried to raid the tomb of nazeric from that anime, overlord. They should of turned back.....
I figured I should just chuck Sleepy straight into the thick of it.
Your Advanced Heroquest videos are definitely making me regret not having picked this up way back when.
Copies do pop up at decent prices sometimes. Just keep an eye out and move quickly if you see a deal.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yep! Already got my eye out looking!
It's funny that the dungeon was mostly empty but still felt interesting and dangerous.
Awesome video! Can't wait for the next parts!
I think that's one of the interesting things about Advanced Heroquest. You do find a fair few empty rooms and corridors, but it really just builds the dread, because you know that when a monster does show up, it isn't going to be an easy fight. Every single encounter means potential death.
Part 2 is scheduled to go up on the channel on Wednesday, with the final installment on Friday.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yeah, most modern games include time pressure mechanics to emulate that that sense of dread, but only end up destroying the joy of discovery and exploration. That said, I would consider implementing a "doom track" of sorts, increasing the chance of random encounters every so often, specially when playing with a group of players.
The game does already have a soft timer heroes should be very wary of. I discussed it in my rules video. When there's a GM, every time you waste time in areas with no monsters, and whenever you spend time searching, the GM has a chance of earning a random dungeon counter. These do things like provide a fate point monsters can use to prevent damage, allow the GM to spring a trap, allow the GM to summon wandering monsters, or allow them to rescue or respawn a named villain. They can save these counters up and use them when it best suits them. The longer you take, the more of these counters the GM will earn. So, although there is no ticking clock, it pays to move quickly as you are denying the GM options to hurt you.
In the solo game, they couldn't do the dungeon counter thing, so instead the more you waste time, the more rolls of the dice you make for the GM and the more chance there is of rolling up a trap or a group of wandering monsters. Additionally, the longer you take in combat the more opportunities the enemies have of calling in reinforcements.
Sarge needs a wheelbarrow.... bugger its stairs...!
At least his companions are there to lend him a hand... oh no, wait...
Man that Fimir was was well angry the sarg killed his buddy
They make the polar war bears in HeroQuest look friendly.
New nickname for the Sergent: "Stumpy"
That's really funny. I do call him Stumpy in the rest of the playthrough!
Enjoyed that - cheers for the upload.
Thanks for watching.
Awesome video. You have introduced me to a different way to pronounce fimir!
Thanks. There are lots of different ways I have heard it pronounced. I just pronounce it the way I have since I first played HeroQuest back in '89.
This would make a great re-release
I'm not sure all the table-rolling would fly in the current market. I think Shadows Over Hammerhal is the closest thing Games Workshop have done since.
Your videos are great!! This game has a pretty good cult following.
Thank you. This game is great.
*gasp* my favourite old school boardgame :D
*likes before even watching*
One of my favourite board games full stop. Thanks for the like.
Thank you can wait to see the next installment
It won't be long until part 2 goes up.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring awesome I really enjoyed that even if you made a few mistakes! But I get it you are trying to be entertaining & produce content that makes sense! Love the channel!
Great video mate!! Very entertaining to watch
Thank you.
this was cool!
Thank you.
Thank you for this excellent playthrough. In hindsight, I wonder if Jervis Johnson (creator of Ad.Heroquest) understood the title different to the non-advanced version.... It seems to me that Advanced Heroquest embodies the idea of a, 'quest to become a hero'. Thus, all the starting characters are barely able to survive a single dungeon, let alone kill with any efficiency or make progress. That framing of the game makes its difficulty level make so much more sense (to me at least)
Thanks for watching. I feel like Jervis just wanted something that really captured the grim reality of what adventuring in the Old World would have been like. The game certainly reflects the horrors depicted in all the artwork throughout the rules!
Really enjoyed that. Nice clean footage and well narrated! I'm definitely tempted to get it now after never having it as a kid.... hoping there is some 3rd party board pieces available out there somewhere so I don't have to go into the rabbit hole that is ebay! 🤣
Looking forward to part 2
Thanks. Good luck with your search. Part 2 is going live on Wednesday.
I know it is a rule in solo you can't search for hidden treasure, but after a few runs I realized that is insane rule. I can't pay my cost of living, new arrows, medical supplies and spell components being handicapped like that. House ruled.
You shouldn't be relying on hidden treasure to make your fortune. Apart from a magic item once in a blue moon, you have a very slim chance of finding some gold coins, and the maximum find is 30 gold. Your money should come from killing monsters (10 gold coins per PV, so a quest room is going to be a minimum of 100 gold using the matrices as printed). Also, every lair and quest room, plus some hazard rooms, will have a chest to open. This isn't ever a game where you are rolling in money, but missing out on a few coins from hidden treasure searches shouldn't make much difference.
One thing I do like to do in normal rooms is roll to see if there is any furniture, just for a little added interest.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I agree you can''t/shouldn't rely on the hidden treasure to make your fortune as you rightly point out the max is a few gold coins IF you are lucky. Using the Heroquest furniture table is great, I do this. If I get a empty room result, I then roll on hidden treasure table. In saying that, 30 gold can cover a base level character's costs for a visit to a town, or may allow a Wizard to cast 1 spell next dungeon run. I don't find I meet more mobs or have more income when playing solo so I don't understand why the rule is there in the first place. I haven't crunched the numbers though, maybe you have? I will say, I play with a party of 4 heroes, rather than a hero plus mercs but I role play them as individuals entities without a pool of gold to share.
It's probably to offset the benefit of having one brain to determine the best way to maximise the use of the money. In a normal game, you must divide the money equally between all players when returning to town, but then players can loan and gift it if they want to. As each player will have their own ideas for the best way to spend the cash they may not want to do what is considered best for the team, and this leads to a less efficient use of the money. When you are controlling all of the heroes, you can always do exactly what you want with the cash, so a slightly tighter budget probably offsets that.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah you can maximize the income after the pool is divided at the end of a expedition if you don't roleplay them, I guess that comes down to self control. But I mean if you want an easier game you can just cheat/reroll your bad rolls on the treasure chest tables but where is the fun? I find the joy is in rolling with the possibility of finding something, anything, if only a screech bug, even though in reality I probably wont find a thing. I agree with you the scraping a meagre living by slaying monsters is great, I just don't like being handicapped when I play solo. One of the Warhammer Quest functions I like a bit more is the gold per kill, but it doesn't reward support roles however (and makes you wince when your roleplayed barbarian always gambles or drinks between missions) but it just doesn't fit the economy in AHQ.
Cliffhanger! This is amazing!
Advanced Heroquest is perfect for cliffhangers.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring and UA-cam! Can't wait for the next one :)
Where did you get the idea for the scenario?
I made it up after creating the dwarf hero in a previous video. His low weapon skill and strength suggested he would probably adventure in large groups, his low bravery suggested if things went south he would probably run rather than fight. The rest just fell into place. I chose to use HeroQuest monsters because I wanted to use period accurate stuff that I had already painted up.
Yay, this is the content we are here for
Hopefully lots of people feel the same way!
Thanks. There's nothing stopping you creating an adventure where the heroes have more to do than fight monsters and find the exit, it's just the easiest way to run the game solo. When you have a GM running the dungeon for you, you can have all kinds of exciting things go on.
Est-ce que vous compter faire d’autre vidéo solo advenced herosquest ?
This particular adventure will span three videos, so part 2 will be on Wednesday and part 3 on Friday. After that I have some different Advanced Heroquest content I would like to do and I will gauge the level of interest in doing another solo plunge once I have some skaven painted up.
That game looks scary
Great stuff carry on
Sleepy is in a class of his own when it comes to bad luck. Sergeant must regret taking the job. Apprentice might start having second thoughts. 🙂
None of them are having a great time.
Absolutely brilliant intro 👏
Thank you. That's very kind of you. I don't get to write much fiction these days so I thought I would grab the opportunity.
12's for days?
12's for days!
Ain't that the truth.
Yes! Lets go.
"Let's go!" is Sleepy's slogan.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 😆
This was awesome, thank you! Looking forward to part 2. Given the video’s length, I was worried poor sleepy didn’t make it past part 1!
I’ve seen a few other Adv HQ playthroughs on UA-cam but this is the best by far. Really fast and concise, but also your explanations of the rules are teaching me how to play and enjoy it myself. The narrative at the start was great too. Plus the Resident Evil loading screens are just the icing on the cake 😂
Do you know what the reasoning is behind the solo rules not allowing you to search for treasure? That’s something I think I would allow unless there’s a good reason not to, as getting loot is one of the few benefits of pottering around these death trap dungeons!
Thanks so much. Searching rooms rarely turns up much - a very slim chance of a magic item, but normally no more than 30 gold coins, so it isn't a major difference. I think the reason you aren't allowed to do it is probably mainly for solo games with less than four heroes. Normally gold is shared evenly between all heroes, and preventing searching stops one hero from getting too rich. However, it may also be to offset a single person making all the team decisions when you play with multiple heroes, as you can always choose to pool the money and buy the best things, rather than having a group of players who are all interested in getting their own stuff.
While I play with the rule that searching isn't allowed in solo games, I do always roll for furniture in "normal" rooms, as this does mean occasionally it's still possible to find interesting things. Of course, all lairs, quest rooms, and some hazard rooms still get treasure chests so there is still normally stuff to find.
Good play through. Man trap lives up to it's name again.
Shame about the minis......
They're absolutely brutal.
I created an excel sheet for generating the dungeons. Worked pretty well and in combo with a very expanded, but never finished word doc of hazards I had the makings of a neat system, but never got it all finished sadly
I am sure it would be quite easy to come up with something to generate the dungeons as you go. Coming up with new hazards is all part of the fun. This game is the perfect sandbox really because you don't need anything more than your imagination.
8:11 is me the few times I dare to actually show the AHQ doors to people, I plan to use the new Heroquest ones going forward to maintain them as long as possible.
Yeah. My doors are all intact at the moment, and I would like to keep them that way. It's a risk every time you use them!
I love watching your play through videos. Very relaxing. However what is not relaxing is the bloody prices on eBay for a copy of Advanced Heroquest! What’s even more annoying is I used to have it as a kid but never appreciated it 🤦♂️ oh well…..
Keep up the great content! Thank you!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. I would say, keep vigilante on eBay. Often the prices are stupid, but sometimes a copy comes up at a decent price, even complete, and occasionally a poorly listed one will fly under the radar and fail to attract many bids. I've managed to get really good deals on copies of Advanced Heroquest and Advanced Space Crusade that way.
I sold every game I had when I left for university many years ago, and I do kick myself regularly, as it's costing me a lot of money to buy them all back now, so you aren't alone!
Wow.... the Advanced Hero Quests Rules are soooo harsh.... I could only imagine myself playing by these rules with an experienced dungeon master.
They can be tough sometimes. Death is quite common, but it's one of the things that's sort of baked into the system, like hiring disposable henchmen, and writing a will so you can pass on your belongings to your replacement. It's a fun game to DM because you get a stash of dungeon tokens, and you use those to do things like set off traps. It means there are times when you can go hard, and times where you can ease off the pressure a bit to let the heroes regroup.
Thanks for the video. I never understood why the heroes decide where the doors are roughly tho. Thoughts?
I think it's just a gamey thing to give the heroes a little control over the dungeon layout. Stops luck or a mean GM from creating dungeons that are impossible to get through.
The Fimir is a large Monster. he uses 4 squares and has a lot more dead zone. i put it in the middle of 4 :)
I know. You need to see my other videos on this where I talk about how the large status was corrected for Terror in the Dark as it was omitted from the original character card, but I choose to use the HeroQuest fimirs as single space enemies anyway.
Did you considered to play Hero Quest with the advanced rules solo? I try currently. I think you can earn money, stuff and henchmen more quicker.
when the chars leveled up i will go normal advanced heroquest.r
btw i have lot of figures from oldhammer and those heroquest figures such as some skaven, a cool amount of chaos warriors and other chaos stuff, the fimir from white dwarf and a bloodthirster. i do the same as you collecting the stuff
@@stephanstrauss6703 Collecting everything for Advanced Heroquest is a fun project, and quite an undertaking! I am considering running one of the HeroQuest missions with Advanced Heroquest rules on the channel.
I could provide you with some pictures of my Monsters for some new oldhammer vids or else. :) White Dwarf Fimir, Bloodthirster, 2 Metal Doors, Female half nude Chaos Thug and so on. most of em are painted.
I like the Style you do the Vids specialy the gamplay sessions.
I think about making a own ahq vid . Do you have some Hints for me?
thanks for doing this. AHQ is simply out of reach for many of us... the swinging doors appeal to a lot of HQ players, but I hear they are pretty fragile and rare to find intact, plus $$$. but in the age of 3d printing... who knows!
The doors are very fragile. I am lucky enough to have two intact sets, but that's not the norm! The open doors do tend to get in the way a bit too. I actually think swapping out closed doors for open doors is generally a better option.
Nicely done
You should be permitted to search for treasure in an empty room. Just saying..
You can search for hidden treasure in regular games, but the solo rules specifically state you cannot search for hidden treasure.
Excellent content and a great video, thank you for sharing. Out of interest, why are you restricting yourself to only having your hero open the doors instead of your henchmen?
Thanks. Heroes can explore, open doors, and search for treasure, but henchmen just move. They are hired help for assisting in fights, and will not do any exploring of their own.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I have been playing this wrong for 35 years! I always played that they couldn't search but could still open doors and chests.
I guess they stand there going, "Heck no, I don't get paid enough for that. You go first."
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I envisage this conversation taking place before contracts are signed in the inn they met at 🤣
Interested to know your thoughts on comparing this to Warhammer Quest. I know you're a big WQ fan, but you've also mentioned that it hasn't aged well. Is AHQ better?
Actually while I am a fan of the modern Quest games, I wouldn't call myself a fan of Warhammer Quest 95. It's a game that's incredibly important to me because of my childhood, and I love it for that, but I don't rate it as a game. I recently made a series of videos charting my top 50 games, and Advanced Heroquest was number four on the list. Warhammer Quest was disqualified from being on the list because I gifted away my copy many years ago, but if I did still have a copy I don't think it would have been very high on the list, and even then it would only be because of the fond memories and nostalgia.
Dude are we getting more of theses ?
This playthrough comprises three videos, but that's all there is at the moment. I would love to do some more, but it's not on the cards just yet.
Aw… You missed an opportunity. You should’ve zoomed in as that door was opening to the dungeon room.
I'll go back and edit it into the next episode, just for you.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 🤣 don’t do it on my account… but seriously that would be awesome.
Already done. Don't expect it to look great though!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring lol, not a simple post production zoom is all it needed.
@@popixel That’s all you’re getting.
I’ve just realised something - you don’t roll for defence like normal hero quest?
Which do you prefer hero quest combat or advanced hero quest combat?
I was just thinking to myself, maybe hero quest allows weaker characters to get lucky and prevail? More so than advanced here request rules?
This is just using at the moment. I’ve as yet been unable to play advanced to request using the rules. as I’ve been busy with work, and trying to prepare, and get all the bits in place before I start playing.
There is no defence roll because the prowess of the defender is accounted for, firstly by their weapon skill, which determines the to-hit roll value (in conjunction with the attacker's weapon skill), and then by their toughness, which lets them shake off wounds.
Advanced Heroquest absolutely gives weaker characters more chance of success. You have critical hits, that cause exploding dice, allowing for even a relatively low level hero to score multiple hits or increased amounts of damage. Additionally, heroes have Fate which they can spend to convert failures into successes.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
Ahh ok… well explained. I didn’t figure critical hits as well.
Thanks 👍
okay lads, up the stairs, hop to it. (see what i did there?)
Ha. Unfortunately the Sarge didn’t see what they did there.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring i am way to old to still be playing these games, but, there it is. I love them. lol.
Can I ask - the STRENGTH stats of enemies, does it have relevance?
When attacking you only take Weapons Skill and toughness into account? Am I missing something?
Strength determines how many damage dice they roll.
Hey thanks - feel like a complete noob… sorry.
Where in the rules would that be?? lol
Honestly, haven’t seen it. I’m looking at the combat section, I’m looking at the stuff at the end where you create your own character. …
I’m watching your videos in tandem with starting to playtest the actual games rules.
It’s a lot to get your head around…
Look at the weapon table under character creation. Shows what strength you must have to use certain weapons, and how many damage dice you would roll based on your strength.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
Will do - thanks….
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
Forgive me… I’m probably being a right muppet… but I’m looking at the Hand to Hand weapons table.
I’m scratching my head. I’m coming from Heroquest combat you see.
Where it’s like -
Monster
Body / 4
Attack / 3 x dice
Defence / 2 x dice
It’s so simple.
I’m trying to get my head round it. I’ve only just started to playtest the proper rules.
I get the HIT roll.
But I then not only do I need to look at Monster type in this case let’s say Chaos Warrior… look up his stats, I also need to calculate for his strength and what weapon he’s holding????
Chaos Warrior/
WS / 8
BS / 4
S / 6
T / 9
Speed/ 6
Br / 9
Int / 8
So this one is holding a sword so with strength 6 he rolls 4 dice!
On the extreme end - strength of 12 means you might be rolling 10+ dice?!!!! Is that right??
So it seems like I’ll need to compile a bunch of references sheets, especially if you have a mix of enemy types??
These rules for these games I always found intimidating - for good reason. I will get there….
You video playthrough are great, as watching someone actually play helps solidify your understanding of the rules!
Dunno how people play multiple board games, war games etc.. it taken me months to compile all the bits, dice, dungeon tiles, tokens, dungeon furniture, mini’s and now actually deciphering the rules… it’s a lot!
Please play a long campaign (:
This particular plunge is a three-video series. I will have to gauge the interest in a longer campaign after that.
Dead Wizard??? NOOOOOOOO
All too common in this game, I'm afraid.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring in normal HeroQuest my main goal is always to keep the Wiz alive, as hebis a true glass cannon. I never played AHQ, though
A noble cause.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Well, indeed! But our group name is: Mighty Wizard and his unworthy Companions 😂😂
I am certain that's how all wizards see their group!
