Removing the intake manifold and replacing the glow plugs on my 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300D (W124)

- I've been having some trouble with the glow plug light on my instrument cluster. It's never lighting up and there are some rough starts sometimes. I decided to take off the intake manifold and take a look at the glow plugs.
Watch me test each of the plugs - only one or two lit right up. Two were just bad. The other two eventually get going. Definitely great to get these replaced!
I also took out the cruise control actuator. This should be the last part needing replacement before cruise control is back in action

Hi Marie, thanks for your video....how do you remove the hex bolts on the lower side of the manifold? I have trouble reaching the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ones. Did you use Allen key to remove them?
Great question - I went to Harbor Freight and bought `3/8" drive metric long reach ball hex socket set (7 piece)`. That's the exact name on the HF website 🙂 It's basically a very long hex key on a 3/8" socket and the ball end lets you get at the bolts from tough angles. With this, I was able to get to all 12 of them without an issue - although some can be a tight fit. Hope this helps!
Awesome Matie, thanks a lot for your help. I will get to it soon. Appreciate your video
Yo Marie, like you said, I bought a long Allen key size 6mm together with a round tube to get all the bolts loosen. Very happy that I managed to get it opened.
Did you warm up the engine before removing old ones?
No. But I'm curious - that shouldn't make a difference, right?
@@bsclifton I heard that it is better to warm up the engine. Apparently, it's easier to remove them, and there is less chance of them breaking. So I did it that way yesterday on my W124 250D no problem.
@@tone45. that definitely makes sense! They can be get seized up - and heating the engine up would effectively be the same as hitting it with a torch for a bit. Great idea! 🙂
