If you are going for original look that’s the way to do it. If you want it to hold up and not crack or scratch off you need to sand down a little with 240 sand paper spray the bulldog then spray down some primer but add some bulldog to the primer when you are mixing it. Then you add your mat paint preferably. I did many cars with a gloss finish for car clubs and the gloss is very disturbing while driving. I have an 85 el camino that’s been sitting for over 10 years in the sun and the panels are just starting to crack.
Thanks for the feedback! The next time I pull them off to touch them up I’ll for sure try this!!
Good lookin’ out! I’m going to do that today.
I am also an El Camino fan, I have a 71’ el Camino I’m restoring.
Thanks for the solid advice
Just the video I was looking for. Thanks for the demonstration 👌
Absolutely! Glad it helped!
I’ve had good results on multiple vehicles using SEM.
I went from a light poop brown everything to a two tone black and gray. The results were amazing. I painted seats and carpet with SEM and it took out (covered up) stains and discoloration.
I didn’t know at the time to use adhesive promoter but it turned out great.
This video is so cool! Can't wait to see that brown part G O N E
Thank you! I’m right there with you on that one!
I enjoyed your video. When I spoke with the guys at my local automotive paint shop about painting my interior trim, they said you won't need the adhesion promoter for this application -it's designed for use on exterior plastics. Instead, they suggest using SEM 38353 Plastic Prep or similar products before shooting color.
I'm restoring an '89 Corolla and the two decades in the yard unprotected bleached the trim parts and I've used alot of "protectant" and "restorer" but nothing gets them looking good.. You just convinced me to paint.. Thanks for a great video
Glad I could help and glad you enjoyed it!!
Did you do it?
@@mongopoe5099 I'm trying but it's hard to find an engine without taking a risk on eBay. I have it pulled apart just waiting on an engine.
Very important that you used a filter mask.
But poor dogs, they really took it hard.
One dog even dropped to the floor.
😅
Next time, do it with your dogs out in the yard.
Great video!
Thank you! The garage has a dog door that the dogs use to come and go, that dog just likes getting high haha
Great video for the newbie like myself. Not a bunch of unneeded talk. Just facts.
Thank you! Appreciate the comment!
@ethanwingsit I used both SEM products that you suggested and your instructions. My panels really turned out good.
That’s awesome!! Glad it turned out well!!
Thank you great help.
I’m glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment!! 🤙🤙
Also SEM sells their paint in non aerosol form if you want to use an air compressor and spray gun. I did my Foxbody with the cans but if I ever do it again I’ll use the gun. Great video.
One thing to note is that when I researched the process all the info I found also said to go over the panels with a fine scotchbrite pad before spraying.Just something in case you wanted to try.
Thank you! In the next garage I’ll have an air compressor setup so if anyone has that I would certainly recommend the spray gun over the cans!
For the scotchbrite, I did use that with the soap and water but very possible I was to go over again right before paint, I’ll keep that in mind when I touch them up!
You're just the person to talk to... I've got an 88 Fox body. I'm restoring, and am looking to redo the interior. What color did you go with? Mine is currently gray, but with the armrest delete being black, I'm thinking of changing things to black? Sounds like you used SEM, which color did you use? And where did you buy it? Thanks a lot!
@@reno911isawesome the SEM color Landau Black is a perfect match for the fox factory black color.
Which Sem version, gloss, semi-gloss, did you use? Great video by the way.
Thank you very much!!
The paints I used are:
Kleanstrip ETPO123B Bulldog Adhesion Promoter
Duplicolor HVP104 High-Perforamce-Vinyl
SEM Paints 39863 Platic Adhesion Promoter
SEM Paints 15243 Color Coat - Satin Black Aerosol
Shouldnt have to touch up that often. I used the sem since its better. I do red scotch pad over the plastic, use warm water with a few drops of dawn to wipe down, then instead of acetone(plastic and acetone dont get along) i use denatured alcohol...much more plastic friendly. Then use the bulldog, then primer and then sem color.
I did my console about 6 yrs ago and still looks like it was just painted. Im also bad about throwing crap on my console but its held up.
So out of curiosity would you be able to put a layer or two of clear coat over the black paint to protect it more? I use my truck every day and she’s worked in so it would be rubbed off in maybe a month
This is an awesome question! I have no clue but I have a couple painted parts I haven’t installed yet. I have some regular and 2k clear coat laying around, let me do a couple tests and I’ll whip up a follow up video!
@@ethanwingsitthat would be awesome! Thanks!!
Dupli Color has a Fabric Vinyl clear product, I did it in my doors panels. After almost 10 months it is like new, but I take care a lot! I don't know how much would last in someone else's vehicle. But the clear definitely helps.
can you do fabric seats in this looking into making my blue interior 1990 honda accord a black interior like this as real back interiors are hard to find
I haven’t personally tried it but from my research online people say it would wear off over time
Wonder what could happen if you sprayed an oil based paint like rustoleum satin, speaking mainly for a work van
Used it on some spare interior parts I had laying around. Absolute garbage
What model adhesive promoter did you use the sem what?
Howdy! The paints I used are:
Kleanstrip ETPO123B Bulldog Adhesion Promoter
Duplicolor HVP104 High-Perforamce-Vinyl
SEM Paints 39863 Platic Adhesion Promoter
SEM Paints 15243 Color Coat - Satin Black Aerosol
You got a video showing how you did the headliner??
Yes I do!

Great video. How are they holding up? Is one better than the other
It’s hard to say because I don’t usually have any passengers so the drivers side door has definitely taken a beating and will need touched up, the others are still perfect but they don’t get much abuse if any
@@ethanwingsit ok thanks for the reply
Any lacquer paint will work... Its just most spray cans are enamel now, find a lot lizard who does touch up work for dealers if you want the best results since they can mix to mafch for ya and not much more then buying cans and supplies.
"lot lizard"??? 🦎
Maybe I missed it but how many cans of SEM do I need per panel?
Howdy! About a can per panel!
What color is the sem can? Looking into doing my truck with that back sem
Howdy! The paints I used are:

@@ethanwingsitis it HVP104 or HVP106. 106 is the flat black and 104 is gloss?
Was one can of each SEM product enough to do 2 door panels?
Howdy, for the adhesion promotor you would be able to do all four panels for less than a can. For the paint I used a (SEM)can per panel for the front, which are a little larger. For the back it was a little less(Dupli-color) than a whole can per panel, but the panels are smaller.
Was the vinyl and fabric paint gloss or flat blacks?
Flat black 🤙
What color was the sem? I want to use that for my door panels. I just used duplicolor for my carpet and liked it but thought it might turn out weird on my panels glad I saw this vid fire t
@@owenrook6467 I'm personally thinking it was landau black.
@@dirtmcgirt0420 that’s the one closest to like flat black right? Think I’m gonna go with that one for the door cards. Thanks for the reply bro
@owenrook6467 Correct, It has less gloss than the other black available, satin.
Was that SEM Landau black? Thanks

You try using the clear coat on them after?
Not in this round. When I touch them up that was a suggestion from others so I plan on using 2k clear coat and see how much better that holds up in a future video
where did you get the headliner?
If you’re asking about the starlight effect I did it myself over a weekend. I have a video of it here if you’re interested in doing it yourself. It’s time consuming but it’s not hard
Installing Fiber Optic lights in your headliner(DIY Starlight Headliner)

Would it be the same if you paint the door panels red?
Yep! Same process no matter the color!
How many cans did you need per panel?
Howdy, for the adhesion promotor you would be able to do all four panels for less than a can. For the paint I used a (SEM)can per panel for the front, which are a little larger. For the back it was a little less(Dupli-color) than a whole can per panel, but the panels are smaller.
How long does it last
It would depend on the abuse the parts get, if they are never touched such as a pillers I would say a long time, the door panels will show wear from the first scuff of your shoes. I’m considering this something I’ll need to refresh once a year on certain parts and I rarely drive the truck, maybe 2 times a month
Will the interior stink like chemicals though?
Do you smell chemicals while your sitting in your car now? Because most in not all plastics, metals, even leather that is any color other then a light Tan, is actually painted or “finished” with an oil, acrylic, or other type of project finisher
Nope, no lingering smells from either brand!
What's the permanent fix lol
Dye is an option but would require a vat to heat the water that would fit the door panel, but other than that getting an oem replacement panel that was cast from the color you want sadly
How about the fumes the dogs are breathing??
These are organic gluten free fumes, no need to worry
