Been using SEM for 15 years. Great product. Acetone is perfect prep. Sometimes mixing 50/50 acetone and 99% isopropyl alcohol helps it not flash off to quick on the leather. With leather I noticed that when it gets a little tacky from the prep it’s the best time to spray it, perfect bond.

I used SEM Color Coat after I saw a mechanic use it to change color on a salvage yard steering wheel. So I did it, prep is key to success with all painting. I thought Duplicolor only did exterior paints. I'm very happy with my results. Your upholstery work has helped me alot. Thanks.

Thanks for covering this and presenting SEM products to the masses. A lot of people are not familiar with their products. Was a little surprised you didn't use some variety of scotch pad or SEM's grit based soap to abrade the surface.

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  Рік тому

Hello J, You are so welcome! Acetone always gets the job done. It is very harsh on plastics and vinyl's. I was using that decades before there ever was a pad or grit soap. I have never had a problem. Don't be too surprised and although those might be helpful I don't think they are always necessary.

Be very care and take photos before removal to reference when reattaching the plastic.

I’ve been doing interior painting since 03 and this technique is 💯 but I just started putting clear coat to protect it from scratches and it last for a long time. The one flaw or recommendation is if you going to clear you dashboard use semi gloss due to the fact when the sun hits it it’s going to give a mean glare but it’s nice at night tho.

I have always used laquar thinner instead of acetone. Is there a difference? I also lightly sand the vinyl/leather as well. I have seats I did 20 years ago with still awesome results today! Even though I love the spray vinyl cans, I prefer using the liquid dye I apply with form brushes or spray with a gun. The "liquid" is definitely more durable. I have it mixed "flat" with no shine at all! I have heard of applying an overcoat to protect the color, but have never used it. Again, I would use "flat"! I hate shiny leather!

Hello Richard, Lacquer thinner does work, but acetone is harsher and makes the surface rough enough for the spray dye to stick to plastics and vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!

Also with the acetone use a proper nylon bristle brush, with a wood handle, unpainted, to clean in the tiny crevices, and get all the dirt out. You can use isopropyl alcohol there, to get the dirt free and out, then use a blonde medium paint brush with the acetone to degrease and prepare the surface, stripping off the top layer of oxidised material, which is what the acetone does on plastic and leather. Do not leave the surface wet for any time, the acetone will destroy the plastic is left in contact, you want the minimum time on surface to clean and strip, nothing more.
However for plastic where it has a embossed surface that has worn away, you can actually use the acetone to restore this, using a terry cloth rag folded into a flat even pad, that is pressed into the surface wet for around 30 seconds, to make the surface ripple and match the rest somewhat. Also works for surfaces that have been plastic welded to fix them, to sort of hide the weld line.

Hello Mighty, I am so sorry to hear about your common bad experience with aftermarket seat covers. You can change the color using SEM or other spray dye products, BUT. It is better to stay close to the vinyl color for better coverage as a contracting vinyl color will be more difficult to cover. Greetings! VERY cool video! Thanks for taking the time to post! Would've LOVED to have seen the final results in the car!! I have acetone as part of my cleaning arsenal, so I'm part of the way there to re-painting the interior doors of my 2022 Chevy Malibu. Although it is used (Only 43K miles at the time of purchase), it is new to me! The interior doors are vinyl and have scratches that I want to remove. The color is "Dark Atmosphere." I found the exact color on Everest Automotive (WA303X - OEM ). They claim that it's a premium polyurethane base coat. SEM has a similar color that they named Med Neutral (15883 SEM). Questions...I know you're an avid user of SEM interior paints, but could I use the exact paint from Everest Auto and get the same results you did in the video if I wipe down the doors with acetone first? I want confidence in knowing that I'm using the right paint, I don't want different-colored doors. Also, should the door panels be removed from the car before being painted? No sanding needed, right? Please advise. Thank you!

Hello Green, Thank you so much! Do you mean sticky as in adhesive sticky, or the vinyl itself became sticky? What i use for glue removal is mineral spirits. Please keep liking and watching!

@@oldschoolautoupholstery On the 2002 IS300, the dashboards are sticky, leave fingerprints to the touch and look gross. The factory refused to replace or help out. They are defective.

Thank you thank you thank you! This is good stuff. Is that SEM color coat vinyl paint or just general purpose paint? Also, no “See Ya!”? My wife was disappointed!

Hello Flickers, You are so welcome! SEM is really a lacquer, while general purpose paint is an enamel when sprayed on vinyl never dries. Ask me how I know? That's part of the learning. Tell your wife I said, "See Ya!" Please keep liking and watching!

You said it isn't permanent. I have an LS400 that I want to do gray to black color change. What would you recommend to change the color of the plastic and vinyl (I'm dying the leather) that would be as close to permanent as possible?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery

Hello John, Yep, that's right. Nothing you put on top of vinyl or plastic is permanent. It can all be scratched off. Just a warning. Please keep liking and watching!

How are you sir? I’m wondering how I get the original color, of my interior of my car? It’s an Acura ILX 2021. In a spray can? I had a burn hole in the passenger seat, and I repaired it with the filler, now I’m ready to paint, and I’d like to find the color. Do you know where? Thanks

I know the right answer is to replace my boat upholstery. I just don’t have the money. It’s not in terrible shape just a bit stained, minor cracking at the seams. My question is if you can recommend some sort of filler or sealer/something I can put on the seams to preserve them and then coat with sem color coat. I’ve seen some vinyl/leather repair videos and was thinking if the white paste stuff they apply then heat with a heat gun to dry.

Hello Jaime, In 44 years I never did vinyl repair. I only did vinyl replacement.
