I think saying the consumer drives the market and we choose function over form is very generous. Phones still have glass backs which is very impractical, they don't have headphone jacks, they prioritize thinness instead of making them thicker to allow more room for a bigger battery, plus they'd be easier to hold. We have screen cutouts for cameras, how is that practical? They got rid of LED notification lights, the list goes on.
The consumer does drive the market. Samsung copied Apple for not having a headphone jack but people bought them anyways. Curved screens left because people didn’t want them. The iPhone mini failed since the market said people don’t want small phones.
@@ganymedehedgehog371 Samsung saw the same potential as Apple in that they could take something away and sell you the solution, in this case, wireless earbuds. We'd be dealing in "what ifs", but I would think that Samsung is too big to fail, being the top smartphone manufacturer. Samsung dropped the headphone jack with the S20 in 2020, and at least in North America, who was left making flagship phones that people knew about and would gladly switch to? LG was on their last legs, HTC was dead, Huawei phones were banned in 2019, Sony is still around (my choice) but for dumb legal reasons, the fingerprint scanner was disabled. It still works on the international versions, so luckily I get those in Canada. Their only real competition was the Google Pixel, which even today only makes up about 12% of the North American market. Yes, the world is much more than just North America, but it's an example of where Samsung is at. It's not really Android vs iPhone, it's Samsung vs iPhone. When regular people walk into a store to buy a phone, they'll be greeted with Samsung and Apple as the top options. People were going to buy Samsung phones regardless because they're the top brand and regular people aren't going to do the research into other brands. I can understand curved screens. I've never owned one, but I can tell they'd be awful to use. I don't understand the shift away from smaller phones though. I have smaller hands, so I picked out a relatively small phone that would be easier to handle. For a couple years I used the Sony XZ1 with a 5.2" screen, then in 2021, I got the Sony 5ii with a 6.1" screen, but it's only slightly taller and not as wide so it was a lateral move in terms of size, which is good. I don't know what the deal is with smaller phones, I wish they were more popular. I don't believe brands removed features because people didn't want them though, it was probably more for form. Reviewers like Marques kept pushing and pushing for smaller bezels, thinner designs, and "premium feel". Useful features got in the way of achieving these goals, so they had to go, and I think phones are much worse than they could be because of it. If a phone is supposed to be an all-in-one media device, why are we missing headphone jacks, big batteries, and great internal stereo speakers? They've improved over time, but they could be so much better. Why are we putting glass on the back of phones when these are supposed to be able to withstand the abuse of being on the move? There's so much I could say, I hate the path smartphones have taken and I have for many years now.
It was neat, but I won't miss it. It made cases and screen protectors less effective, broken screens more common, and the edge control interface never worked the way it was supposed to
They didn’t just “think.” The curves were completely impractical and made the phone worse in so many ways. Cant think of any real advantages to having curved phones
Never had problems with accidental touches or glare on my s8 and s21U, but one of them died because of the curved display, when it touched something wrong...
Yea i had my note 20 ultra for years, I don't ever recall having any accidental touches at all lol. I traded in for an s24 ultra and I greatly prefer the flat screen however
Same. Never has any issues with it. My S8+ was my baby and im still salty that I slipped and dropped it into a pool at a hotel 2 years ago. Would 100% use it over my s24+ or the flip 4 that ive had since then. Like my 24+ alright but don't like the squared off edge trend as it makes phones feel awkward to me in the hand unless you have a bulky case that can make it more hand-shaped(which is also awkward in just a different way). More normal minimalist cases still end up being pretty 'sharp' cause of it.
@@ovrwrldkiler i kinda like the flat display because i use screensavers. My s21u hit a corner and the screen exploded. Since no screensaver worked for more than a week, i didnt use any. It was better in the hand tho
3:56 no, I don't know what you're talking about. I've never had a single issue due to a curved display, although I've heard those were common on Chinese phones. I guess it's all xiaomi and huawei fault for disappearance of curved displays, samsung absolutely nailed it
I used the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite, which has a curved screen. Accidental touches happened frequently, and if something appeared near the edge, I couldn’t tap it easily. After that experience, I told myself: never again with curved screens
Something is ironic about curved displays: while a number of high-end smartphones nowadays are phasing out curved displays, there are an increasing number of mid-range phones that have curved displays from manufacturers like Tecno, Infinix, and Lava.
I am quite surprised that nobody has mentioned anything about the LG G Flex First Edition smartphone here in the comments and yes you could get a screen protector and case. I still have my G Flex. 😊👍
Have an S22 ultra with a curved screen. Glare is no more an issue than flat, never accidentally touched edge of screen. And in the words of Jerryrigeverything glass is glass and glass breaks. Samsung curved screens are just as brittle as Iphone. I see 10x more iphone screens cracked. People who don't put cases on their phones don't protect their investments. Overall, video was mostly inconclusive and only reason Samsung stopped making them is because it's A. Cheaper, and B. (Unlike apple) is a change of design. Because iphone 13 to present are subtle in differences.
Maybe Samsung is going away from overly curved screens because no one really wants them and Apple is doing well with their flat displays. Seriously who really asked for curved displays to begin with? When they first came out I'm pretty sure the majority of people hated it and wished Samsung and other phone makers would go back to making flat screens again.
Most of the problems I've had with a curved screen were solved with a case, and it does look really nice having the screen go all the way to the case. I do agree with the accidental touches, its a pain without a case.
In short people don’t know what they want. They thought they wanted curved screens and thinner phones. Then Apple said forget that and kept flat screens and made phones thicker and heavier with metal bezels and everyone jumped on board.
It's funny how everyone always said that curved screens gave them accidental touches but every phone I ever had with flat displays gave me accidental touches while curved edge displays NEVER gave me them, they even felt more natural to me

They're literally about to introduce a 5th size for their top lineup phones for most companies. Samsung gallery is why I have 512 ( max ) GB of SD on A10 , but my new phone One plus nord 3 is only 256gb and 64Gb SD for music, and extra files. Btw idk if it's good or bad , but new samsung phones look like S24 so it makes them not feel cheap while making s24 questionably cheap. The phone looks like 300-400 $ atleast ( but is 120$~ ) looks matter because my own 320$ phone looks like 180$ Xiaomi or Techno/Infinix and it makes it feel cheap.
I always thought I'd love curved screens but most people dislike it and told me not to get a phone with one. Well I bought a Motorola Edge 40 and I love it. It looks and feels awesome. I hope the Edge Line stays on the market for a long time.
But One plus 13 has now flat , which I'm glad atleast it has but don't worry other brands still have it ! Last time 12 Op was curve's turn , now Flat's turn ! , 50-50. @HotRod-05 If they'd get serious about their devices instead of playing mid-range queen, they'd be insane and near the top of the market. They should be honestly.
@SirDella they sold off loads of their IP (stuff that literally made a few industries) and have just been hanging on since. It's sad because they used to make some of THEE premier Android experience devices too. Their current stuff have aspects, but not the full package it seems. It's sad, because the entire telecommunications would not be where it is without them, period.
Many of the Chinese phone brands still use curves. They're slightly curved on all sides, top, bottom, left, AND right, and it makes the phone feel so much nicer to use. Basically, every edge has become its own function to swipe from. When it's flat, it feels far less comfortable than when it's slightly curved. Personally, I prefer the curves. I'm currently using a Samsun S24 Ultra, all flat screen. I like the phone, but I certainly miss the tactile feeling of those curved displays. I also miss how beautiful curved screens look, compared to the way flat screens look.
Watching this on my 4+yo Oneplus 7t pro. Best phone I've ever had and I got no plans on replacing it until it literally falls apart. Love the curves on it
I never had any issues with Curved screens, they also make android back gesture a pleasure to use, their immersiveness and the classy look makes me a big fan as well, hope they never go away as it seems comapanies are just removing them to just make a change in their new flagship cause they really have mothing interesting to add.
I have an S10+ and I don't intend to change anytime soon. I've come to really like the rounded edge and actually miss them when I use a phone that doesn't have them. I used to find them annoying because it made it impossible to get screen protectors but I've switched to a simple adhesive one to project the screen from scratches.
This is true. But it has nothing to do with killing curved displays. They were more of a hassle than they were worth. Curved displays have no functional benefit that can’t be achieved just as well or better on a flat screen. It was pretty gimmick and nothing more.
@@cardgameenjoyer7446 Exactly. A pretty gimmick. It added no actual function and had a ton of trade offs. It looked good on some phones. But did nothing to actually improve the device beyond aesthetics.
It's sad how marketability cuts creativity. There have been so many amazing designs throughout history that were abandoned because of low marketability
I'm glad this trend is coming to an end. The only phone which got a shattered screen were curved, and I ended up not fixing them due to the higher repair cost.
Curved display phones looked really beautiful. I owned a Galaxy S6 edge and still to this day the phone looks amazing. I've seen many curved screen phones over the years and all of those are spectacular from regular flat screens. As cool as it was but these came with some complications. Curve display had mistouch problems. More newest ones definitely solved that problem with software. There was another matter that probably made it economically a baf thing. It was always hard to find curved screen protectors. And those were pricey. Regular screen protectors won't fit good. Not to mention those screen proctors were expensive to manufacture.
I didn't even realize my s22u has a slight curve till now. Then again it's been in a huge otterbox since it was removed from its original box Though if the new phones have removed the side short cut I riot
Been rocking one of these for 5 years now, and I'm honestly bummed you can't really find a flagship without it anymore. It's more comfortable to hold for me, and feels so nice to use, I'm gonna miss curved screens
The problem with curved edge screen phones is that once the display sustains damages on its edge, it makes the phone practically useless (if damaged on the right spot). It happened to me a few months ago (& yes, I always wear my phones with cases). I was shattered 😭. I highly doubt I'll go back to an edge-screen phone ever again.
I've been using curved screens since 2016. No accidental touches, no glare 0 problems, and I always use a phone case on my $1K+ glass pocket computer because I'm not an idiot. Actually, I remember when the Galaxy s10e came out, and everyone was complaining that it did not have curved edges. Curved edges not only give it a sleeker look, thinner side bezels for a better edge to edge display, but it also feels nicer in the hand for those who don't use a case. Unlike iPhone a few years back, when people were complaining about it's sharp edges digging into their hands. Did it serve any practicality? Not really other than getting rid of side bezels. The only real downside is a little bit more vulnerability to cracking when dropped. Now I'm not saying curved edges are the future, or need to be on every phone, or are specifically a luxury feature, but I will say it is not a hindrance by any means. It's just a design feature, like choosing rims on a car.
They found something that made you say "thats a Samsung!" And then went straight back to what they're good at. Doing exactly what they've made fun of others for.
The curved screen on my old samsung was practically indestructible. Working in construction, i def had alot of accidents to test that on. I never put a protector on it.
I saw curved screens as a way to go for the bezeless look and have a higher screen to body ratio. But now at this point in technology, we can have a flat screen and smaller bezels
Everything is TRUE but I still love curved display, BTW I have vivo v27 pro not much of a premium phone, but feels premium and serves curve display purpose
I never even considered a curved screen phone because they always seemed unpractical since day one. The curved screen was too close to your fingers, so the chances of accidentally touching the side of the screen were much higher
Never new there were phones that were curved inwards! That seems like a neat idea, actually. Especially when using your phone one-handed, having the display be higher up on the opposite side would make it easier to reach the other side of your screen with your thumb.
I still think that S6 and S7 Edges were one of the most gorgeous phones ever imo. I still remember how much I craved for S6 edge, when commercials were rolling for it.
Curved screens looks pretty but screen protector for them were a nightmare. And expensive......have you ever tried to install one of those up glue ones?!
I do find it sad that they are going away, I really like the curve on my S20+ since the curve is just big enough to have an immersive viewing experience without annoying bezels, but it's also small enough to the point where I haven't really had any issues with lighting or accidental touches. I do agree that phones like the edge series have a curve that's way to mush, but I'd like to see them come back with just a slight curve.
The thing with curved screens was that it had "more screen" which meant more glass which further related to an increased chance of damage and glass breaking which was also more expensive and difficult to repair/replace and thus they went out of trend
Watching this on a flexible OLED! Might be worth noting, iPhones with OLED panels use flexible OLEDs, tucking the end in towards the connector on the board. This allowed them to reduce the bezels.
My Note 5 was so old that when it broke my insurance sent me a Note 8 as a replacement. The curved screen was so cool and futuristic that I absolutely fell in love with it. When I finally upgraded to the Pixel 8 Pro the flat screen was probably my favorite part.
It became a curse on my Note 10+ when my cousin started playing clash of kings on it and accidentally dropping his troops in the wrong place. Truth be told, I was all in for the Edge displays, the VR+Smartphone duo, the huge freaking cameras on the back and now the whole folding frenzy. I like innovation and there are enough rich people to pump those innovations forward. Of course they are impractical, they're outside the norm. Why settle for boring? But art and science is dead and profit is the only goal.

“Glass is glass, and glass breaks.”
-JerryRigEverything
I think saying the consumer drives the market and we choose function over form is very generous. Phones still have glass backs which is very impractical, they don't have headphone jacks, they prioritize thinness instead of making them thicker to allow more room for a bigger battery, plus they'd be easier to hold. We have screen cutouts for cameras, how is that practical? They got rid of LED notification lights, the list goes on.
The glass backs was totally designed concept that got forced it upon us, no consumer is clamoring for that "feature"
It made cases and screen protectors less effective, broken screens more common, and the edge control interface never worked the way it was supposed to
What happened was people used curved screen phones. People thought they were worse than flat screens. Curved screens died.
They didn’t just “think.” The curves were completely impractical and made the phone worse in so many ways. Cant think of any real advantages to having curved phones

samsung did that bs too sadly
It must have been a good idea. Who had a headphone jack?
I don't find the headphone jack on s20, s21, s22, s23 and s24 series
Never had problems with accidental touches or glare on my s8 and s21U, but one of them died because of the curved display, when it touched something wrong...
Yea i had my note 20 ultra for years, I don't ever recall having any accidental touches at all lol. I traded in for an s24 ultra and I greatly prefer the flat screen however
Yea i never had accidental touches also. Maybe it's the way some ppl held the phones. Or meatier hands, idk.
I had a lot of problems with accidental touches from the edge of my hand. Now I'm back to a flat screen, and the comfort of use is much higher.

1:24 I wouldn't mind this concave screen making a comeback. Very cool.
Durability, and practicality supersedes innovation and gimmicks
Hated curved screens and hope they never come back.
It's funny how everyone always said that curved screens gave them accidental touches but every phone I ever had with flat displays gave me accidental touches while curved edge displays NEVER gave me them, they even felt more natural to me

The main problem is that they used to give you options. Now it's flat, all across the board. While most phone line ups have 4 different screen sizes... why not just, make ONE of them with a curved display? Just one? They're literally about to introduce a 5th size for their top lineup phones for most companies. I don't care about a .3 inch difference, give me a different display or interesting design on atleast ONE of those phones.
The problem was that we didnt had a choice in the past, and i had to use curved screen phones. Now its your turn
Curved display still looks futuristic. It gives me a feeling like I'm holding a real deal, like news paper, some journal, or manga book. Advanced phone experience that is becoming unavailable over years

I'm so glad this industry trend came to an end. It was genuinely impractical and served no real purpose except for making the phone more fragile.
I was purposefully sticking to my note0 for as long as i could. when it came out, it was so ahead of it's time, that i really wanted to test how long i could keep it while still keeping it relevant.
i had to upgrade 4 years later because it was starting to get slow, but most importantly because it didnt have 5g and wanted a bigger screen.
so i upgraded to a s23U, and i was so dissapointed to see that it still had a curved display.
then when the s24u came out, i upgraded again for the flat screen and the aditional 4gb of ram.

But I love Samsung's Gallery app . No chinese phone can do same.
I download lots of pics. And specially certain WebP gifs don't run on One plus , and some chinese gallery. Third party is okay but that may be data / privacy issue.
It's same with Redmi14C looking like flagship Oppo / Vivo making them feel cheap or vice versa ( redmi 14c feeling expensive )
also one of 14c is glass back and that's crazy cheap. The phone looks like 300-400 $ atleast ( but is 120$~ )

This is true. But it has nothing to do with killing curved displays. They were more of a hassle than they were worth. Curved displays have no functional benefit that can’t be achieved just as well or better on a flat screen. It was pretty gimmick and nothing more.

7:40 hi little Huawei P60Pro
Awesome video 👏🏻
Curved screens are awesome until it goes
In a phone case 😂
The curved screen on my old samsung was practically indestructible. Working in construction, i def had alot of accidents to test that on. I never put a protector on it.
I saw curved screens as a way to go for the bezeless look and have a higher screen to body ratio. But now at this point in technology, we can have a flat screen and smaller bezels
Tech UA-camrs dissed curved screen so much that almost all the manufacturers cancelled it altogether
I loved my S6 Edge. The features like, edge notifications, were awesome. And they were genuinely useful, and not just a gimmick!

I never even considered a curved screen phone because they always seemed unpractical since day one. The curved screen was too close to your fingers, so the chances of accidentally touching the side of the screen were much higher
Actually Essential Phone PH-1 was the first phone to have a proper notch, announced six months before the iPhone some might argue it's LG V10
Also, raised bumper cases were the best for the curved-screen phones. Kept them nice and safe while allowing you to use the curves.
Curve screen will be back because glass screen now are getting tougher and tougher
I loved my galaxy S7 edge and you know that curfed screens will become a thing again in the future.
If you don't use a case with your phone you're asking for it to break.
Watching this on my fold 5, the technology only got better.
I just want a foldable/portable monitor to play switch with my friends lmao
