I have caught myself thinking more then once irl the phrase "Don't you dare go hollow" when life becomes tough. It becomes part of your soul. Great video 👍🏻
Honestly it's crazy to me the impact that the silly rolling boss battle game can have on people. Thanks for watching btw, I am really glad you enjoyed and hope you will stick around :DDD
When I was younger, I gave up a lot. Dark Souls taught me the power of perseverance and that there is an almost addicting quality from recovering after hopelessness had sunk in
The effect that Dark Souls has had on so many people is actually crazy to me, it's mad what a good game can be, at least how it affects someone mentally
Not only do Dark Souls games not lack hope, they are THE most hopeful games I’ve ever played. It is the core of the emotional experience. Hope is the only real choice you have
Interesting take. I don't think its nessesary hope though, but a even more primal drive. I think the most powerful stories are in fact the ones where all hope is lost and all you are able to do is fail honarbly. Like Artorias. By far my favourite B story. Similar to Boromir. Both keep on fighting even though they "can't see victory" and most likely lost all hope. Yet Artorias and Boromir keep fighting and protecting to the very end. Artorias saves his wolfcompanion and Boromir sacrifices himself in an attempt protect the Hobbits Merry and Pippin.
Truly inspiring. My favourite quote comes from Mark Bloodborne who said that every borne is blood. Truly some of the most influential people of the modern era.

Most souls clones forget the heart of dark souls and why it's so good. Usually just making it grim and depressing without trying to capture the beauty in sadness and decay. While pretentious there is an emotion you can only get looking at the ruins of things that were once great that dark souls captures so well. I always try to explain this concept to people about berserk/the souls series so thank you so much for this video. Beserk isn't just shocking visuals and depressive plot from the 'event' but at its core, a story about learning to allow yourself to put trust in others and rely on the help of others after such a great loss and betrayal. To have growth we first need to have experienced the failure that we can build that knowledge and understanding and self care off the back of.
Thank you for this, and honestly I do really need to read Berserk properly, it really does seem just up my alley! :D Thank you so much for watching, and I am glad you enjoyed and I hope you will stick around for my future videos :D
I do have a twitch channel at (www.twitch.tv/notsaberfr) which I was considering streaming some games that I might cover in the future if that would interest you?
Great video man I watch’s 100s of videos like this all the time basically all saying the same thing. But I like to hear everyone thoughts on what they think about the story even if they do all get to the same conclusion. Miyazaki’s favorite story they created might be Bloodborne, and my favorite story in the souls series is Elden Ring (from the mastery of GRRM and Miyazaki combined). But none of them will be as iconic as Dark Souls. It’s the original iconic building block that set the foundations for souls games. And the Ringed City in 2017 as the conclusion to Dark Souls is nothing short of masterful. Two nobody’s who persevered through it all, fighting at the end of the world.
i just got reccomended this video. and i need to say, you make great videos. i hope you keep it up with these videos. beacuse they are so good edited. also i want to mention that Elden Ring has that "hope" and "peace" at some points. just like when meline said "However ruined this world has become, however mired in torment and despair, life endures. Births continue. There is beauty in that, is there not?"
I do agree that Elden Ring does have a lot of hope in its narrative :D I would have included it in this video but I want to talk about Elden Ring in a separate video - but it's still a banging suggestion! Thank you so much for your kind words as well, I'm really glad you enjoyed and you stick around because I do intend to make a lot more :)
But when you find out the Greater Will already abandoned the lands between through the Mother of Fingers descriptions, it makes the endings except for Ranni's very hopeless 💀
@@xelester_8686 greater will wasnt there for whole time. it already abonden the lands between when shattering started. two fingers in roundtable hold, was just giving us the qutoes that was told them before by greater will. but greater will didnt thought that radagon blocked the erdtree, thats why two fingers stopped guide us and tried to talk with greater will. but greater will abondence doesnt mean that there is no hope in life, what was returning our souls back to our body is erdtree not greater will, so life can countine without greater will.
@@xelester_8686I’d argue that the age of perfect order is the most hopeful ending due to it sealing all outer gods away. A TON of problems in Elden Ring comes from outer gods wanting stake in the world, so why not simply put them all away
@@MrDeniz-ou6cg ye i know but based on some npc's dialogue about the two fingers rambling nonsense makes more sense now after discovering that they're just imperfect children of the mother of fingers, who has basically become a broken sattelite since the greater will no longers gives any commands. The two fingers rn are probably just spouting either outdated bs or are completely wrong since its been a long time already. To me it seems like any other ending aside from ranni's is flawed, cause ranni is basically doing a full reset without any gods or greater will interference (which doesnt confirm it to be better but its a change at least). If im making no sense my bad lol
WOW, thank you so much for this video. I needed this so much. I needed someone else to talk about this. I just couldn’t find the words to explain why I cling onto souls+souls like games. Thank you so much for creating this vid!✨ I cannot WAIT to see what else ya make in the future!💕
You are so welcome! I am glad that someone else understands how I feel about the game :D I am also glad you enjoyed the video in general obviously lmfao :) but I hope that my future projects live up to your expectations :D
I always read Dark souls as a story about choosing hope over despair. With DS1 in particular, right from the opening cutscene I took it to heart that in this world, fire IS life and light and death and dark and everything else that matters. That without fire, there is only unchanging ash. And also dragons I guess. In light of that interpretation, I started to see everything in the game, striving against the impossible to prolong the age of fire, as being a grand analogy that breaks down to "do you carry on, or do you let yourself go hollow?". Do you choose hope or despair? And why not choose despair? You keep finding people saying that despair is the natural state of humanity, that hope is a lie, that it always fades. They say that the world is too weary, that YOU'RE to weary to go on. That everything is too miserable so you might as well just cut your losses and give up on the only fire and light and life you've ever known. But a lot of people are there telling you to hold on. A lot of them saying just the smallest words of encouragement, telling you to keep going, forging onward, not giving up for ANYTHING. They tell you to have hope. I chose to link the fire. And I will keep holding on to that precious flame of hope until my last breath leaves me. Hold to hope, friends. And don't you dare go hollow.
Keep up the good work mate, you inspired me to start working on vids again, your video is super fun and interesting and the thumbnail is awesome, hope you get the relevance you deserve ❤️ thx.
I think this general feeling of hope is why souls veterans really wish they could forget the game to experience it blind again. The level of mastery that players have of these games turns a dark and dangerous world into a playground. Compared to every other character how ridiculously powerful the player can become is almost comical. Feelings oppressed by the Souls games is a fleeting feeling.
i have been recently watching so many dark souls lore and got this video recommended to me. i have to say, dark souls games made me love all the british accents and dialects, sounds stupid to say but it is true lol. you know ill be watching a dark souls lore/analysis video when a british boy narrates it! all the best to you, great content, great video. subbed and liked brother!

ahaha thank you so much for your kind words :D, I make videos on things I like and honestly after the amount of money I've spent on 40k over the years it would feel wrong not to talk about it lmfao :D
Ummmmmmmmm excuse me sir, just come out of nowhere and drop one of, if not the most profound dark souls videos I've ever seen? Who the f*uck you think you are 🤣 I never really thought of it this way, in particular for dark souls 1. You just completely recontextualized my favorite dark souls game in ds3 with this perspective of the story. What an incredible video. Instantly subscribing. Phenomenal job my guy. One thing with the lore how I understand it, gael got to the end of the world and had to consume the pygmy lords because, due to time passing when we broke the egg they aged so much that it wasn't liquid anymore. For us it was a second, but for him time passed normally. Gael had to eat them in order to liquify the dark soul into his blood through digestion. This way the painter can paint the new painting that needs to be painted with his blood. Since it needs to be painted in blood anyway... Paint lol. When the egg breaks time sling shots forward meaning gael and you are the only two remaining undead at the end of the world. The dark soul corrupted him and is now relying on you to slay him and take that blood to his Lady, the painter. It's the tragedy of gael and the hope he has in his sacrifice will help her achieve her goal of a new world. Seriously though phenomenal video. I am very excited to see what you do next and watch your library.
Thank you so much for both the (too) kind words and also feedback on the lore lmfao, it did get a lil confusing so thank you for clarifying :D I'm glad I was able to provide a different perspective with my video, and I do hope you like what I have cooking for the next few videos :D
It isn't necessarily wrong, but I think the idea of the Dark Soul made humanity is not correct(for me). Every single piece of humanity IS the Dark Soul it can break apart and empower those who have it. The Dark Soul is potential itself. It can break apart, multiple, and spread. It's possible the Dark Soul was really weak when it was first found, why no one but a similar being took notice of it. The Dark Soul creates while the Flame consumes. (Not in the best state of mind. Hopefully, this makes sense, and I didn't just misinterpret what you said....)
I don't quite yet as I am still very new, you can follow my twitter for updates on me and future videos, but I was also considering making a tik tok to add like clips of my videos to :D either way I am very glad you enjoyed and I'm sure if you come back soon I will have another video that I hope you will enjoy :D
commenting for the algo but i will give you my thoughts on how you could improve the video too: - the main thing i would recommend is structuring the video thematically instead of structuring it chronologically. it would have allowed your commentary to be more nuanced and connect together more relevantly. - i also feel a decent amount of watchtime is spent recapping the events of the games which i mostly think is unnecessary, because it acts a distraction from your points (which themselves are quite interesting) - the font / text / sfx were a little intrusive considering the heavier themes of the video and the vibes of dark souls as a whole. i would have preferred things to be more subtle personally big props for spending the time to make a video like this though. i respect the hustle. your thumbnail game is pretty good too
Well, I hope I can help make that come true :D I intend to make a lot more videos like this so do stay tuned :DD (and thank you very much for watching :p)

If it ever gets tough on UA-cam, always remember; you're brave for doing what you do. And after all..
What is bravery without a dash of recklessness?
Thank you for the inspirational words, my friend :D, I do intend on doing this for as long as I can so do be sure to stick around :)
Got this on my recommended hope that it gets there for lots of people you deserve it
Thank you so much :D I hope too lmfao but I am really glad with the reception this video got anyway as it blows my mind because I have only been doing this (on this channel) for like 3 weeks now lmfao. I am really glad you enjoyed tho :DDDD
Meant to leave a comment after I watched this initially. You've done some amazing work here, Not Saber, and I wish you all the best in continuing to create amazing videos. After all the years I've spent playing, talking about, and studying the lore within, this still managed to add some things I hadn't thought of.
Just got recommended to me, excited to chomp through it, good job man!
I hope you enjoy :D
Congrats in advance for when you eventually blow up after uploading this banger!
Thank you :D, I hope you are correct lmfao :)
Nahh bro how u got only 126 subscribers
Like i thought u had a few thousand atleast
Anyways earned ur self a new subscriber with this quality of content
Keep up the amazing content.
I appreciate your words a lot, and hopefully one day I can reach those amounts but I am happy rn with the response I have already gotten :D, I am really glad that you enjoyed the video though :D
Insane video man keep it up
I do intend to keep it up, but I am so glad that you enjoyed the video! :DDD
@@NotSaberFrr definitely sticking around! Absolute banger of an introduction to your content and you definitely deserve the limelight!
I hope you stream these games one day!
W youtube for recomending this masterpiece
Thank you so much :D I am really glad that you enjoyed my video :)
WOW, thank you so much for this video. I needed this so much. I needed someone else to talk about this. I just couldn’t find the words to explain why I cling onto souls+souls like games.
Thank you so much for creating this vid!✨
I cannot WAIT to see what else ya make in the future!💕
You are so welcome! I am glad that someone else understands how I feel about the game :D I am also glad you enjoyed the video in general obviously lmfao :) but I hope that my future projects live up to your expectations :D
The 'End of Fire' is the best ending for me! Why? because the Fire Keeper is awesome! Best Level Up Lady in the Souls Trilogy!
Fire Keeper clears the rest imo lmfao :D
High quality video essay channel? Gimme that
I always read Dark souls as a story about choosing hope over despair.
Love from a JacobGellar and Vaush fan!
sometimes, the algorithm just works
the almighty algorithm, praises be upon both it and you :DDD
Keep up the good work mate, you inspired me to start working on vids again, your video is super fun and interesting and the thumbnail is awesome, hope you get the relevance you deserve ❤️ thx.
Thank you, and you got this, I believe in you and your content! :D
Dark Souls put you in a world of Nihilism and forces you to hope through it to beat it
Thats a great way of putting it :D
I'm glad you enjoyed my narration lmfao :D, thank you for your kind words and if you stick around I'm sure I'll make more videos you enjoy :DDD
HUGE VIDEO BRO GOOD JOB
THANK YOU :D
I 100% thought this was an old video and you would have had minimum thousands of subscribers but LESS THAN 200?!? I have seen channels with tens of thousands of subscribers with worse editing, structuring and script then this. Just good job dude keep on going. I'll be waiting for your next vid
Thank you so much for the kind words :D and I'd be glad to see you again :)
Banger video.
Thank you my friend :D
A youtuber that has videos on Dark Souls AND 40k?!? And good voice too???
Cant sub fast enough
ahaha thank you so much for your kind words :D, I make videos on things I like and honestly after the amount of money I've spent on 40k over the years it would feel wrong not to talk about it lmfao :D
In a perfect world Ashes of Ariandel and Ringed City are the same dlc
Hope is the essence of Lord of The Rings
Very true :D
Amazing video 🔥u have a new subscriber 💪
Ummmmmmmmm excuse me sir, just come out of nowhere and drop one of, if not the most profound dark souls videos I've ever seen? Who the f*uck you think you are 🤣
I never really thought of it this way, in particular for dark souls 1.
Woo hoo I'm subscriber 102🎉
Thank you so much for both the (too) kind words and also feedback on the lore lmfao, it did get a lil confusing so thank you for clarifying :D I'm glad I was able to provide a different perspective with my video, and I do hope you like what I have cooking for the next few videos :D
@@captainlovebug yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lets gooo :D
1000% agree bro this dudes my new fav souls creator honestly
I subbed
Thank you so much :DD
It isn't necessarily wrong, but I think the idea of the Dark Soul made humanity is not correct(for me). Every single piece of humanity IS the Dark Soul it can break apart and empower those who have it.
The Dark Soul is potential itself. It can break apart, multiple, and spread. It's possible the Dark Soul was really weak when it was first found, why no one but a similar being took notice of it.
The Dark Soul creates while the Flame consumes.
(Not in the best state of mind. Hopefully, this makes sense, and I didn't just misinterpret what you said....)
It's always darkest before the soul - Albert Einstein
Just a beautiful video beautiful narration keep it up i will be here on your 10.000 sub or more is only a matter of when not if
Thank you so much for your kind words, and I do hope that I also see that day :D
You've got yourself a new subscriber bro, you got any other socials that have your videos?
I don't quite yet as I am still very new, you can follow my twitter for updates on me and future videos, but I was also considering making a tik tok to add like clips of my videos to :D either way I am very glad you enjoyed and I'm sure if you come back soon I will have another video that I hope you will enjoy :D
Don't you dare go hollow
Truly inspiring tbf lmfao :D
I know it’s cliche but I have that tattooed on my body lol
That’s how much DS means to me since 2014
Amazing video
Thank you so much :D
commenting for the algo but i will give you my thoughts on how you could improve the video too:
- the main thing i would recommend is structuring the video thematically instead of structuring it chronologically. it would have allowed your commentary to be more nuanced and connect together more relevantly.
- i also feel a decent amount of watchtime is spent recapping the events of the games which i mostly think is unnecessary, because it acts a distraction from your points (which themselves are quite interesting)
- the font / text / sfx were a little intrusive considering the heavier themes of the video and the vibes of dark souls as a whole. i would have preferred things to be more subtle personally
big props for spending the time to make a video like this though. i respect the hustle. your thumbnail game is pretty good too
100th sub lets go.
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, THANK YOU SO MUCH :DDDDDDDDDDDD
Skipping DS 2 is a crime
I do understand why, but it's because I wanted to talk about in a separate video and don't want to cause Dark Souls fatigue lmfao
That makes sense. Great video btw!
@@talus9663 thank you :D i'm glad you enjoyed :)
Try finger, but hole.
Shortcut ahead therefore try jumping :D
I wanna go home
And then edge
Now this is epic. This video is the type of shit that I want more of
Well, I hope I can help make that come true :D I intend to make a lot more videos like this so do stay tuned :DD (and thank you very much for watching :p)
Great video but the fucking subway surfers at the end took me out
its truly the pinnacle of gaming tho lmfao
Bro, I just watched it all and I couldn't believe my eyes, only 700 views? This is too tier content with great editing and narration, you deserve all the subscribers that will come your way! You're my favourite channel now hahah ❤❤❤
Thank you so much man, it means a lot to me and helps motivate me to make even more :D I am really glad you enjoyed and I hope you enjoy my future content :)

lets gooooooooo :D
Do you have a stand alone video for the intro it really good also whats the songs
I do not right now but I may upload as a short if that's something you'd like, also the song for the start is called 'Evergreen', if not that song the rest are in the description :D
@NotSaberFrr maybe you can do that as a short or have one to advertise the video. I don't know if youtube still bumps up shorts. Maybe title it is dark souls hope core or something like it.
Bro, you don't have to put Subway Surfers for this crowd. Relax lol.
honestly i just added it cus i didn't know what else to put there and thought it was funny lmfao
@@NotSaberFrr haha i never expected to see subway surfers and dark souls in the same video. Have fun man.
PS. since you're going for the dramatic style of prose, I think I prefer it if the background music is a bit louder or swells in some places. Just my two cents.
Frampt lied. Linking the First Flame wont remove the Undead Curse. The linking if the First Flame is what caused the Undead Curse in the first place.
Kaathe lies too. At least linking the flame temporarily stops the curse. Also the symbology of the undead curse is not as cut and dry as, "Undead bad."
What's the song you used in the prelude?
Evergreen by Ritchy Mitch and the Coal Miners (but sped up and pitched up a bit)
:D souls be dark
what if the body be light?
whatabout ds2
gonna cover it in a different video :D
Furtive pygmy, not furtitive
My bad, mb, thank you for the correction though :D
@@NotSaberFrr idk if you can edit in post but i didn't see anyone else mention it, so you know how it goes
