      Oh that's so neat! I have often wondered about how neat it would be to design a garden for those with limited sight-- focusing on texture and scent rather that straight looks.
      I'll admit I didn't think too much of it with houseplants, but I do have a tradescantia that has the most magically silky feeling leaves, with a super fine fuzz on them. I bought it because it was striped white and green, but I can't stop petting the leaves whenever I check up on it.

      I know your comment is years old but I love it. I do not have problems with my sight, but as someone whos love for plants is very tactile, I can appreciate this! The textures, thicknesses, and smells of plants are everything. Lol. Good luck with your plants!

    Hoya manipurensis is weird. I think it much more closely resembles Dischidia. It gets moved in and out of the genus periodically. Also if anyone likes Hoya finlaysonii or H. callistophylla, there are a ton in that "family" that bear a close resemblance like H. sp. Germany, H. clemensiorum, H. vitellina, H. meredithii, H. kalimantan, H. sp. borneo gunung gading, H. deykeae, and H. vitellinoides (which arguably is just H. meredithii and not a separate plant at all). Also, yes, Hoya hypolasia is very pubescent.
    As for the mature red leaves, it's usually a reaction to very bright light or direct sun. A lot put out red leaves at first which turn green, but some mature leaves turn red with enough light like Hoya 'Sunrise' or H. sp. borneo gunung gading. Or H. bordenii in this case.
    This was great, I've been waiting for you to do Hoya. Thanks!

      I hate them too
      And I'll tell you why i hate it because I can and people are gonna hate me for saying it but I'm gonna say it
      The leaf looks like it's been damaged, like, you know those leaves that get bug infested and they come out weird?
      That's what those leaves reminds me of, and it's not super helpful that it has yellow edges ... usually variegated versions of a leaf is inwards, like, in the middle instead of on the edges?
      Yeah, I'm defending Kaylee on this one lol
      Again, if you love them, I totally get it and this is just my personal opinion

    You have to see Macrophylla when it’s gotten some light stress. They get red pigmentation around the margins of the leaves in a line that really frames the rest of the leaf. Stunning!

    My first Hoya was a Krinkle 8. Took months to identify it and left it in the pátio without much care. She survived, big and strong, and now is one of my favorite plants. Sorry, dear Hoya. I really love you now.

  • @hayleygrzych1915
    @hayleygrzych1915 4 роки тому +36

    From what I understand, hoya classification is totally about the blooms. I think that’s why you see several plants with extremely similar foliage and question whether or not they’re the same plant. I like hoya fine (I have a few) but their foliage generally speaking is pretty unremarkable. Those little candy looking blooms though are killer!!

    • @nadiacheema
      @nadiacheema 4 роки тому +1

      Hayley Grzych yes, the classification is based mainly on the blooms. Some hoyas foliage look the same, but the bloom type determines the genus

    • @yangtzeling7468
      @yangtzeling7468 2 роки тому

      Totally disagree. I collect Hoyas for the massive veiny leaves and Jurassic looking leaves. Undulata , Gunang Gading & Clemensiorum are some examples. As for the blooms , I have zero interest in them.

    I’ve been collecting Hoyas for a while now and that does not appear to be a Hoya meredithii. The Hoya meredithii has much wider, flatter leaves that can have quite a funky ripple to them. The Hoya photo you included is listed on google as a meredithii but I’d imagine that to be incorrect.

    One thing I noticed and was quite shocked and sad about is that you havn't tagged where you've collected your pictures from. Which could be quite nice to support the plant collectors, photographers (copyright law) and ofc your fellow plant creators! 💚
    Tip: maybe use pictures from instagram and tag their accounts at least? 😃👍

    There are more than 2000+ types of hoya. They are basically divided into two groups(but not necessarily), epilipital and terrestrial, meaning one climbs and one creeps, although there's some talk on these hoya as to wether they are in the same group. There are probably more types out there as the forests where they live that can't be explored. They are a fascinating plant, and there are some serious hoya collectors, Ted Green is a fascinating man who has collected many hoya, he lives in Hawaii. There is more information about the hoya family than I've told, join our British group on FB, there's always someone to answer your questions.
    I'm addicted, 60+ and growing. If there's anyone out there who also collects and wants to sell or trade then I'm interested.
    The flowers don't really interest me, it's the leaves every time. I have some of the very rare and even rare but they are only small still.
    There are Facebook groups that are really good but most are US based, we have a few good ones in Britain also.
    Kerrii, Lisa, Krinkle 8, Serpens are available on eBay.
    I've got a polynuera Kaylee ! ! ! it's gorgeous.
    Hoyas are addictive, you cannot buy just one hoya, they get under your skin and most are very easy to care for, just don't over water them.

    Great video, yes, the Hoya bug is highly contagious. I was strictly Aroids, but was given one in Dec. I have 16 now. Lol. Including a few on here. Latifolia, finlaysonii etc

    Fair warning for everyone falling in love with Elliptica: These are beautiful but they are A LOT. They need a lot of humidity (think 80-95%, not joking) and can’t get under 20celsius or it will start throwing leaves. If you get one, go rooted and at least six leaves, so you have some time to figure it out. You might also want to look at Fitchii if you like that one. They have small leaves with whiteveining too and are vigorous growers and very hardy. I know they are a bit harder to find, but totally worth it.

    Great video. I love hoyas. And watching this made me add couple of new hoyas to my wishlist. Especially that Hoya compacta jody´s silver -beautiful foliage.
    And if you like foliage plants, you might like Hoya caudata. The leaves are mixed green with lots of grey spots, mature leaves are very stiff, and some of the leaves have wavy edges.

    As a hoya collector and die heart hoya fan, I cant help but to nick pick and correct some of the false information provided in this video.
    - First of all, hoya compacta is a type of hoya carnosa cultivars. So the name should be written as either hoya ‘Compacta’ or hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’.
    - Also, there’s no hoya sarawak but there’s a hoya sp Sarawak. As the hoya is still unnamed, it is being called a sp (species). It’s called hoya sp Sarawak because it was collected from Sarawak (a place in Malaysia).
    - The bloom you showed for hoya sp sarawak is actually the bloom of a hoya carnosa, hoya sp sarawak bloom doesn’t look like that.
    - In your list, the species and cultivars (hybrids) are mixed up and since you use all capital letter for the names, it’s very difficult for others to identify whether if the plant is a species or a cultivar. For instance, hoya ‘Viola’ is not a species, it is a hybrid. The names of hoya cultivars or hybrids should always be written in uppercase and in quotation marks while species names should be written in lowercase to avoid confusion.
    - Hoya callistophylla and hoya finalysonii are two totally different species. They can be differentiated easily by the bloom and leaves. Hoya callistophylla has really tiny bloom.
    There’s many variety of hoya finlaysonii, they have different foliages some are not as striking as the others.
    - Hoya hypolasia has pubescent leaves, same goes for hoya globulosa. Many hoyas have pubescent leaves.
    - Hoya sp kalimantan is synonym of hoya callistophylla.
    - The picture you showed for hoya australis bloom looks like the bloom of hoya obovata. The bloom of hoya australis looks totally different.
    - Hoya ‘Krincle 8’ is also another variety of hoya carnosa cultivar, technically it is still a hoya carnosa.
    - The little ‘stems’ of hoya spartioides are the peduncles. This hoya doesn’t have leaves when it’s matured, they use peduncles for photosynthesis.
    - I have never heard of hoya clandestina but judging by the bloom and leaves I can find on google. I assume it is just a regular version of hoya macrophylla.
    - The picture you included for hoya meredithii is inaccurate, that’s a picture of hoya callistophylla. The foliage of hoya meredithii is light green and much larger than hoya callistophylla.
    - Hoya ‘Michelle’ or hoya cv ‘Michelle’ is also a hybrid. First letter in it’s name should be capitalised and quotation marks should be used.
    - There’s no hoya aspar, only hoya sp ‘Aspar’. Same reason as hoya sp ‘Sarawak’
    - Hoya ‘wilbur graves’ is also a type of hoya carnosa cultivars. Should be called hoya carnosa ‘wilbur graves’
    Lastly, I just wanna say that I am by no mean an expert. You may talk to Doug Chamberlin or watch his videos if you’re looking for some clarifications for hoya confusion. His videos and information on website are highly informative and accurate.
    I also think that proper research should be done for such video. Uncertain informations should be reserved instead of being included in the video to prevent giving out inaccurate datas to your viewers.
