Vicky really touched my heart. The love she has for her mom is clearly immense... Saying that the only reason she lives there is so that Janet doesn't become a lost cause. The fact that she has to be the parent, that she's the one that has to miss school to figure out rent... The way she's smiling as she describes these tragic parts of her life, it almost seems like if she doesn't smile, she'll cry. I hope her and her mom are doing better now. ❤️
Hoarding is object-related PTSD, that’s cloaked by shame and sometimes physical illness that prevents people from cleaning up after themselves properly until it gets out of control. I know a hoarder who is the way she is because her mom was taken to auschwitz. After all her stuff was confiscated and her hair was shaved - she lost all sense of self. So when she survived, she started feeling severe attachment to her new stuff. It’s totally understandable. In my case, It’s chronic illness that made me neglect cleaning my own home and then feeling shame to show anyone how I live, and also, getting separated from my grandfather who spoiled me rotten to live with a mom who never bought me anything and starved and neglected me, so as soon as I was able to have my own money, I started buying stuff so I don’t feel deprived… I’m mostly over my hoarding, but I’m still having a lot of trouble letting people see how I live because I still feel like the clutter is there and because I’m in too much pain to clean up properly.
What a kind compassionate spirit Jasmine has...patience beyond our understanding...We must never forget somebody's rubbish is a treasure to others...Loved Olive God Bless her and Toby her cat...she will be in Heaven one day with the love she holds so dearly...❤️🕊❤️🕊❤️
You can't teach an old Olive new tricks. At 87 years old, she is who she is. Maybe Janet can be helped, yet in the end, I think Vicky will need to choose herself and move out of the house she shares with her mom.
If you're ever worried you are or becoming a hoarder and wondering if you should throw something away, just think if someone broke into your house and stole that item and nothing else would you be devastated? If not, throw it out
Maybe classed as a mental disorder…but many cases linked to deprivation and insecurities. Particularly the elderly who have memories of the 1930s depression and war..
@Harmony May If your leg is hit by an axe, that's a physical wound/injury. If life events hack at you emotionally/psychologically, you're left with emotional/psychological wounds.
Love Olive and her cat Toby. She has a big heart and really really respect her for what she has achieved for charity and the PDSA with all of her recycling work. Toby seems to know what's going on and is always around Olive giving her the mental support she needs. ❤️ I really do hope that both can move back into their house so they don't have to spend all the time outside in the freezing cold
The sight of Olive, elderly and with poor eyesight, climbing up a mountain of garbage to get to her bed made my heart break. I had to stop the video for a few minutes before I could continue to watch. I feel sorry for her cat Toby as well. And Janet appears so sad and withdrawn, perhaps suffering from depression. I hope she gets help for that.
@@smisch7720 I live in Vancouver Canada. A lot of homeless collect cans people leave outside. However there is actually a family here that immigrated years ago and they are actually millionaires from collecting cans!!!! Which blows my mind. They Penny pinch and made friends with some businesses that give them their cans. The grandma reminds me of Olive with her passion for recycling (minus the hoarding).
@@bladerubber Yes its about personal mental issues like many other people have, its just that in the whole present consumerism picture this hoarding makes sense, it's just disorganised city recycling but better than all that stuff ending polluting some natural habitat.
A friend in New York City lived with her parents for over 50 years and since her mother died she is unable to function because of OCD and dependence on her mother.
I grew up with a hoarder mom, and I couldn’t throw anything away so I would literally throw up into my trash bags so that she wouldn’t pull anything out and save it (but she still would…). So, I would throw trash away into my neighbors trash cans, and once I got a car I would have to collect my trash in my car and drive it to a dumpster. I’m not a hoarder but I do have pack rat tendencies and I’m deathly afraid to become one.
Wait a minute. Mrs. Olive has no family and she is 87 and living in unsafe, unhealthy conditions. Why hasn't the local agency for the aged stepped in to remove this elderly woman from her house and placed her where she can get the real care she needs: nutritious hot food, a comfortable, clean bed to sleep on, hygiene and medical/psychological attention.
Wishing Vicky every success and happiness, it is so very, very difficult to carry that kind of a burden for a child and it stays with you your whole life...sometimes no matter how much you love your mom you have to break free or you will never find happiness or reach your potential. Vicki is so caring and loving, she deserves freedom to build her own life for herself. Victoria's mom looked so loving and proud of her daughter when Victoria is singing....hopefully mom will get help.
Is anyone addressing the problems that this is causing the neighbouring homeowners, smell, vermin etc. The devaluation of peoples property. I feel for Olive, but it doesn't just affect her. Such a shame
I agree. I feel for Olive too but I think a hoarder starts to cross the line when they start putting their stuff outside, or their place become a fire hazard. Unfortunately, the hoarding is dangerous as well as being unsightly. I'm sure most would feel awful if they caused a situation that resulted in harm. It's not fair to other people but they don't seem to be able to control it.
I really feel for these people. They often dont have the physical capabilities to deal with the mess when it gets out of control and there are often so many psychological issues also. I personally think each local authority / council should have a helpline or something to assist people with clearing their property if they ask for help. That way the items can be sold or recycled if possible, rather than waiting until a Court order or sadly a death in which case everything goes in the skip and is usually beyond repair. Its worth investing in surely. So many people out there need help and the issues impact not just the hoarders themselves but also their family and neighbours.
Undoubtedly Olive is an interesting and sweet lady, and I hate to say it, but to realistically believe she’ll actually ever live long enough to once again dwell in a safe and clean home at the snails pace she’s pecking away at her gargantuan hoard that has enveloped her home is frankly being dishonest and absurd. She clearly lives in an unsafe, uninhabitable and unhealthy firetrap not only for herself, but for her pets as well that no one would consider acceptable, so why is it in Olive’s case? To claim she’s making any discernible and appreciable progress when she’s mostly just moving stuff around over many weeks, while discarding very little is ultimately not helping her to a better lifestyle she deserves. Obviously Olive has issues deeper than her hoarded mass, but I don’t totally agree in the approach used that perpetuates a really serious problem, yet think it’s a success.
I'm with you - seeing the stuff creates problems for her. If she was taken somewhere and all the junk was taken away she wouldn't know what was gone to worry about it. A few hours and she would be enjoying her space looking at the valuables left behind.
It is fascinating. The 87 year old seems to be kept going and is fit because of it in a strange way. I could not live like that - even bed room looks as if someone moved in yesterday as I have just about nothing out in it - how I like it.
Poor Oliver, 87, 3 bedroom council house. She justifies this as saving anything useful. She is delusional. Doesnt she face that she can't live forever. And it will all get swept away. How are they helping her.
With me it is hundreds of books, records, cd's, dvd's and games and the sheer bloody amount of which, that has ever increased over the years, is actually, to be honest even to myself, killing me. If it would have been just trash, it would have been easy, but with this stuff, which represents some real value ( collectables, items of some real value and the like ), sorting it and getting rid of it is really difficult. Not to speak of the aspect of all the memories being attached to most of it. It of course is still hoarding and as I my home, as far as spaciousness is concerned, is not exactly comparable to Buck House, or even the National Library. It all is rather sick. To get help however is an impossibility, because there is this feeling that I'll shape up one day and that I am really the only one who can sort this mess out and every other day I resolve to start doing it, but it actually somehow never happens. As I am not exactly daft, I know about the scientific reasoning and the academic explanations for all this and yes, there naturally is the issue of the untreated depression, the loss, the grief, the pain and the subsequent substance abuse to cope with it all and of course there is this psycho need to compensate, but just being aware of that, is not going to help me, is it?! It is a curse and I am living it. Is there anybody else like me, who knows what I am talking about? Please respond!
I hope you can find help from somewhere please ask your doctor or maybe organisations on line that could help you. It must be terrible for you living like that. I wish you peace
It’s your stuff. You have poured your feelings into the things you love. Understandable really. Why is it killing you? Are your things organised and do you have a way of getting around without being in any danger? You might want to think about getting in touch with someone who buys and sells the things that you feel that you could let go and sell them to someone who loves your things as much as you do but has room to keep them in good condition. Also you would have some money to put away and maybe take a lovely holiday.
Reach out for help if you have friends or family who you think might be able to assist you. Or get in touch with organisations which support hoarders. But you have to believe you can let go of some of your hoard or there is no point others getting involved. Good luck.
@@barbarajones9385 Someone’s “hoarding” to you is collecting to them. As long as the collection is not causing any health hazards or in any way endangering the owner, where is the problem? I’m a behavioural health professional and I find it insulting of people who use terms like “hoarding” or “ reaching out.” The world is made up of people with differences. Praise the Lord for that.
Vickie needs to be treated for severe depression. Spending some time in a facility under a doctor's care would probably benefit her, and have her house clean when she returns. Olive needs to be put in a nursing home where she can bathe and eat healthy and meet other people her age. It's just too dangerous for her in that house alone!
I thought was was being treated with friendship and love … she started smile when she saw her daughter sing… drugs are not always tha answer. She felt hopeless all around her and two lovely ladies shine their light into her world. If you put Olive in a cage and take her items she grew up with you will kill her.
Olive is of sound mind and body. There is no reason to shove her into a nursing home. She is active in her community via her charity efforts and is happy with her cat. Hate that people are so willing to remove someone's autonomy. Yes I understand that hoarding is a mental illness but its treatable and she is working on it.
@@ez2u1 I'm a clinical psychologist and hoarding is a psychological disorder so obviously can't be "healed" with friendship and love,,.its a deep rooted condition triggered by severe trauma. I counsel so many different people with so many different disorders.
They needed more people to help more efficient manner like the US hoarders show. But it’s nice to see something done to help these people. I like to watch shows like these when cleaning and picking and taking things to flea marker to make me motivated.
She's not recycling is she. I know she feels that way, but, it's only recycled if it's reused in some form. She just turned her house into a landfill. I hope the best for her. She sure deserves better.
Such an extremely sad condition. There was a man on my street growing up who was a hoarder and lived alone. In the end he suffered from a stroke and wasn't found for quite a while so suffered severe brain damage. Not sure what happened to him after that 🙁 Glad this portrays the issue in a very compassionate and understanding light, because these people need help not unkindness and judgement
Commenting before the video finished but Janet needs better help than people being patronising to her 😢 Vicky can't do it all on her jacks 😭 Really hope they managed to get through to better times
I feel for olive. What does she think the definition of “hoarding” is if she feels she is not a hoarder? It’s sad. She’s lovely. She is Both aware and unaware at the same time.
I have a certain amount of sympathy with Olive. If any of you are disgusted by her lifestyle, do your own fricking recycling. Don't throw it onto the street and other people won't feel a need to do it for you. I end up picking up other peoples trash and throwing it out or recycling it.
4 years after this was filmed Olive was living in her temporary house. She got a menacing letter that scared her. "The card, a scribbled out Christmas card featuring a wreath, had been left on the floor next to Olive’s chair in an envelope addressed to her. Inside the card, written in block capitals, it read: “Olive, all the people who like you have signed the card. “Oops, No one. Oh dear.” Olive said: “I felt like that was almost like a death threat, especially with the wreath on it. “I’m now frightened to go back to my old house when it’s fixed because everyone knows where I live.”

I know a hoarder who is the way she is because her mom was taken to auschwitz. After all her stuff was confiscated and her hair was shaved - she lost all sense of self. So when she survived, she started feeling severe attachment to her new stuff.
It’s totally understandable.
In my case,
It’s chronic illness that made me neglect cleaning my own home and then feeling shame to show anyone how I live, and also, getting separated from my grandfather who spoiled me rotten to live with a mom who never bought me anything and starved and neglected me, so as soon as I was able to have my own money, I started buying stuff so I don’t feel deprived…
I’m mostly over my hoarding, but I’m still having a lot of trouble letting people see how I live because I still feel like the clutter is there and because I’m in too much pain to clean up properly.
If not, throw it out
Did I hear it right? the lady at the beginning is living at that house since 1933? few years before WWII even started, thats crazy.
Maybe classed as a mental disorder…but many cases linked to deprivation and insecurities. Particularly the elderly who have memories of the 1930s depression and war..
Like a lot of "mental illness", it's trauma and distress

Love Olive and her cat Toby. She has a big heart and really really respect her for what she has achieved for charity and the PDSA with all of her recycling work. Toby seems to know what's going on and is always around Olive giving her the mental support she needs. ❤️ I really do hope that both can move back into their house so they don't have to spend all the time outside in the freezing cold
She died last year aged 93.
@@eggytoast thank you
The sight of Olive, elderly and with poor eyesight, climbing up a mountain of garbage to get to her bed made my heart break. I had to stop the video for a few minutes before I could continue to watch. I feel sorry for her cat Toby as well.
And Janet appears so sad and withdrawn, perhaps suffering from depression. I hope she gets help for that.
Vicky is so pure and genuine. A total *GEM*
Janet has the best daughter ever.Olive is totally amazing, such a great person who cared for animals.
She has raised more than £90,000 for Brighton charities.
The thing that gets me, is did any of those charities help her after this was filmed?

You see a granny recycling stuff from the streets all day and you think she's insane? She's a real hero of our days.
She can't bare to see anything being thrown away when it can be recycled but she is collecting it and not recycling it!!
Her intention to recycle is not the issue here as you well know.
@@bladerubber Yes its about personal mental issues like many other people have, its just that in the whole present consumerism picture this hoarding makes sense, it's just disorganised city recycling but better than all that stuff ending polluting some natural habitat.
Olive is breaking my heart. Such a lovely woman :(
A friend in New York City lived with her parents for over 50 years and since her mother died she is unable to function because of OCD and dependence on her mother.
That is so sad. I'm so glad you recognize the signs--the first step to change is recognizing the problem
Olive breaks my heart shes got such a good heart and has got herself in such a state trying to do good for others
I cried when she said I need help😢
Wait a minute. Mrs. Olive has no family and she is 87 and living in unsafe, unhealthy conditions. Why hasn't the local agency for the aged stepped in to remove this elderly woman from her house and placed her where she can get the real care she needs: nutritious hot food, a comfortable, clean bed to sleep on, hygiene and medical/psychological attention.
I just cannot believe the Council and the TV Show who knows what's inside the house allow that old woman to live in such a fire hazard!
They are all beautiful human souls. I hope they all managed to sort their houses out and be happy in their lives
That's the first time Janet has smiled, when she heard vicky singing.
This would send my anxiety through the roof 🤯
You’re not joking. A hoarder is a disgusting house.
Me too.😔
I really feel for these people.
Assuming people ask for help, which is very rare.
I felt so happy when I saw Vicky's mom smiling.
They just wanted content for the programme- they got it.
It never ceases to amaze me how you have such a profound way of earning people's trust. I believe this is because, sadly, you relate with them so much
Mom is very depressed, she needs help.
It is fascinating. The 87 year old seems to be kept going and is fit because of it in a strange way. I could not live like that - even bed room looks as if someone moved in yesterday as I have just about nothing out in it - how I like it.
Probably doing what she did kept her motivated.
love Olive so much and have such fond memories of the time spent in her company . ❤
You were blessed :) x
How is Olive?… maybe you know some news about her❤she is a bright soul
Poor Oliver, 87, 3 bedroom council house. She justifies this as saving anything useful. She is delusional. Doesnt she face that she can't live forever. And it will all get swept away. How are they helping her.
I thought the council had a house tax for only one person in a three bedroom council house

Try donating to charity shops a few bags at a time.
Good luck.

Someone’s “hoarding” to you is collecting to them.
As long as the collection is not causing any health hazards or in any way endangering the owner, where is the problem?
I’m a behavioural health professional and I find it insulting of people who use terms like “hoarding” or “ reaching out.”
The world is made up of people with differences.
Olive doesn’t need to go into a nursing home, she needs support
Vicky is the daughter.
They needed more people to help more efficient manner like the US hoarders show. But it’s nice to see something done to help these people. I like to watch shows like these when cleaning and picking and taking things to flea marker to make me motivated.
Us does everything BIG.... we all know that...
She's not recycling is she. I know she feels that way, but, it's only recycled if it's reused in some form. She just turned her house into a landfill. I hope the best for her. She sure deserves better.
Especially at 87
If you could really smell a hoarder house…you’d abandon ship,
Such an extremely sad condition.
That's really a sad situation she obviously needs to be in a clean and safe place
In England the situation is that the places are way too small and depressing anyway without a hoard. Barely any windows and dark too.
I'm sure you have a very supportive husband this cannot be easy on you but what you are doing is angelic we all thank you.
I appreciate your perspective on this… you are a good person
Commenting before the video finished but Janet needs better help than people being patronising to her 😢 Vicky can't do it all on her jacks 😭
Really hope they managed to get through to better times
Perhaps setting one room with her mum's furnitue would have helped her see how the house can be.
“It keeps me fit”
Aww, love u olive
4 years after this was filmed Olive was living in her temporary house. She got a menacing letter that scared her.
"The card, a scribbled out Christmas card featuring a wreath, had been left on the floor next to Olive’s chair in an envelope addressed to her.
Inside the card, written in block capitals, it read: “Olive, all the people who like you have signed the card.
“Oops, No one. Oh dear.”
Olive said: “I felt like that was almost like a death threat, especially with the wreath on it.
“I’m now frightened to go back to my old house when it’s fixed because everyone knows where I live.”
😢😡🤬 wtf. People are awful. Who would do that to a poor old woman?! Disgusting.
