Back in the early 80's, I wrote a fan letter to Marty congratulating him when he landed the gig on SNL I mentioned how much I admired his genius work on SCTV and that I had even tuned into an appearance he made on a Canadian game show where he cracked me up. I said "Now that's loyalty." Anyway a few weeks later during an SNL sketch, he looked directly into the camera and said "Now that's loyalty." I will never know if that was a mere coincidence or if he was acknowledging my fan letter.
I remember after two or three years straight when Rush percussionist Neil Peart had the big tragedy of losing his wife and daughter all within a few months, he quit the band and just went on a long road trip on his motorcycle. I remember getting worried that the band was never going to get back together so I wrote a letter addressed to Neil Peart care of Ray Daniels of the anthem records studio production in Toronto Canada - asking them if they ever could do it, please put this in Neil's mail bag maybe he'll read it someday I wrote yes - we all know that tragedy takes a long time for us to deal with it and it can keep us depressed. But a lot of times it is best to get back to doing what you love to do the best. If you get back to work something you love to do, that will help you recover. And sure enough just a few months later we heard news that Rush was back together in the studio getting ready to record what would eventually be the album Vapor Trails. A full 5 years after their last release and tour. So I kind of thought to myself I wonder if he actually did read my letter and think that you know this person might be right if I don't go back to work and do what I love doing, how am I ever going to give myself a chance to heal and get back to somewhat normal. And of course years later he found a new wife and even had more children. This all happened way back in the early 2000s.
Exactly. I have had this thought before. He can do it with comedy and class. Watch him with Seinfeld on Comedians in cars getting coffee. Seinfeld can be a little fake and condescending. Short puts him in his place and shows he is the Jedi Master.
He's so fast on the draw. That hasn't slowed with age at all, but now he has more experience and back stories to add to the mix. I never see him get rattled in the back and forth or lose the upper hand. Sort of like Don Rickels in that regard. You absolutely did not want him starting in on you and certainly did not want to go tit for tat once he did. I miss Don.

Yeah...the best for me, also... However the unintended, physical comedy bit... where, Dreyfuss slowly succumbs to the floor while Bill continues to host, like nothing is happening...?!
One night Martin Short walked into my friend's bar in Toronto in the mid-8O's. I happened to have a box of brownies and I offered him one. He took one, took a bite and started doing the Ed Grimley dance. A moment I won't forget. No single person has made me laugh more than Martin Short. From Second City to Jiminy Glick, his characters are hilarious and his comedy is timeless. I highly recommend him to all the kids!

Does not get more Canadian than Martin Short. Legendary man! Although I was too young during the SCTV days, watching re-runs of it growing up and seeing where all of the cast ended up in their career was quite amazing.

Thank Bill and Martin. Enjoyed every minute.
Note to Bill - pay attention - it's not all about you. You're interviewing "Martin Short" ( a comic genius) let him talk. God bless him for his tolerance putting up with you.
Absolutely I was about to write the same thing. Who wants to hear Bill do Jerry Lewis impressions when you’re sitting next to Marty. Not anybody
This is actually one of Bill’s best flowing conversations too lol😂
“Money is not everything, but it does make poverty tolerable.“ That quote is from Moss Evers, the general secretary of transportation and general workers union.
Good show guys. Good humor; good conversation. Thx.👏🏼
Nice to see and hear what Marty has to say in life these days. Such a GREAT person. Love ya Martin Short :)
One of the best shows you've ever done! Martin Short is a pure treasure.
He's our Canadian Boy!!! Loved this episode!!
So great to enjoy this conversation. Thank you.
Martin has quite the memory for 73...I hope he comes back for Memory Lane part 2. Great pod
I had the high honor of interviewing Marty Short and he was everything u would want him to be..sharp as a tack, engaged, and of course funny as hell. Arguably the greatest Canadian comedic export since John Candy...& greatest comedic talk show guest ever (Rickles/Rodney notwithstanding) PS, Freddie died at 23, James Dean 24.
Bill & Martin..exceptional character's!! Great Segment!
I could sit down and listen to you both all day... thank you 😊 for the laugh and memories
Love SCTV. Greetings from Calgary, Alberta
Happy that they talked for almost two hours. Great episode
I've noticed the episodes are almost all around 2 hours lately, compared to a few months ago where could kind of judge how good guest would be by the duration. I think has cut things down to just one guest per day of filming, or maybe it's just been how good the guests have been recently.
Did I say unhealthy? I meant just sick. The man has humor up the wazzoo and there's no end to that talent.
The quick wit and delivery is great!
Does not get more Canadian than Martin Short. Legendary man! Although I was too young during the SCTV days, watching re-runs of it growing up and seeing where all of the cast ended up in their career was quite amazing.
RUM AND COKE, did'nt think i could loved him more!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MARTIN SHORT....100%
Maybe the best one yet. The familiarity and acceptance between you two makes it genuinely great entertainment.
Yay! Martin Short is great. I still have _Clifford_ on VHS.
Good ole Steffen 🦕
My new fav episode and I haven’t watched more than a minute yet. Love Marty!
O'Keefe Centre... 🤣I LOVE YOU MARTY - you need to come back and visit us. It has changed names far too often for even locals to keep up.
This was so good. I was never a big Martin Short fan. I am now.
What i love about this platform is the casual at ease non hollywood real honest show with mostly interesting and fun guests .....awesome William !
Couldn't agreee more-- so refreshing!
Damn good Bill!...Marty short? Probably going to be the best guest ever man.
Hey Mr Bill, Martin’s energy is unreal for his age. Love him.
Thanks!
I absolutely love it when I can watch Bill and Martin talk together.
Bill, I was 6 years old when John F. Kennedy was shot. We were sent home from school immediately ! I lived in Ottawa, Canada at the time! Yes the news reached Canada and it was one of the most viviid memories of my childhood. When I got home my father was sitting with his face in his hands crying. Big moment in C a n a d a !
Wow
We didn't even get sent home from school on 9/11
I can't remember what I did wrong, but I was being held after school (high school freshman, I was a brat). We got sent home, and I found my mother in tears. That day, the Challenger, and 9/11 will always remain vivid memories.
I was 6 years old as well, living in Victoria BC, I remember our teachers were in tears, then we got sent home as well.
Martin Short makes me laugh hard because he’s so quick witted and self mocking. He does great physical comedy. I used to love SCTV. Hilarious Paradie show!
I didn’t say spoil it for me
The SCTV UA-cam channel is excellent. I think it’s the only place to stream the show as of now. 🤪
PLUS, he's simply a damn nice person.
@@robvangessel3766 Most Canadians are, I’ve found. Good, decent people!
People speak very well of him and have for years. Apparently he's good.
Great episode. omg i grew up loving martin short ... Inner Space, Clifford, 3 Fugitives Mars Attacks Martin Short was my childhood! love you man! Most Classy comedians right here
Mark again, I mentioned the genius - Canadian 🍁 connection, and I think Tom Green, Jim Carrey and Norm MacDonald fit well into this brilliant formula with Martin Short. And supported each others progress at a world market level. Thanks to you too Bill. Mark Wegner Brisbane Australia
I’ve been a fan of the brilliant Martin Short ever since SCTV started up on Canadian TV. Love him.
Martin Short was my first favorite actor when I was a kid, saw him in a few different movies growing up. Never really saw him much after, but my ears perk up every time I hear his name.
I adored him in Innerspace with Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. I was probably 12.
