I can listen to Martin Short speak all day long. Whether he's being downright hilarious or simply telling a story, he has the charisma to captivate us and brighten our day. Not only a special talent but a wonderful human being as well.
Well said, man. He's terrific. He is thoughtful in his approach and is - even while being a fanboy of Marty - very relaxed and engaging. His style for this format is pitch perfect; he's too languid for corporate tv.
I've never seen this show without Conan but I really like the way Ted is conversing with guests. I saw this show yesterday with Ted, George Wendt and Woody Harrelson and it was nostalgic to hear them reminisce about their time spent acting on "Cheers."
This is the most serious I've ever heard Martin Short in an interview. Ted must do a good job making guests feel relaxed. It doesn't hurt that they're similar ages and experiences.
One of Danson's well known tricks is to withhold donuts and other types of food from a diabetic. And that's just cruel, but EXTREMELY effective as seen here.

This was one of the most sincere, feel good podcast interviews I've watched. It was so refreshing to see this side of Martin Short, and Ted Danson was a perfect person to bring it out of him.
So much to say for this episode. First, Ted may be one of the best interviewers to come around in a long time. His questions, probing and overall style brings out the best in his guest. Martin Short. A unique person. He has created some of the greatest characters and bits of all time. He also has a personality that makes me wish I knew him as a friend. From his growing up creating characters to seeing him with Steve I think he’s just genuinely great.
Love Martin Short. As a fellow Canadian, I love that no matter how long Martin Short has lived and worked in the States. He is still so proudly Canadian.
Has there been any American who has moved to Canada and had the impact that Martin has had on the US? I love all of the Canadian transplants, past and present.
I love both of these guys. They were staples of my formative years. This may be weird and parasocial, but they are unquestionably father figures to me in terms of my personality and sense of humor. Thank you Ted and Martin.
I had the pleasure of meeting/interviewing Marty Short years ago and he was everything you would expect/want him to be. Engaging, sharp as a tack, funny as hell and super smart. Even now, well into his 70s, he remains one of the best comic talents working. And that's no lie, eh?
The Christmas SNL he hosted with Paul McCartney as the music guest has two of the funniest all-time skits: The Queen's Gynecologist and Holiday Pageant. Pure Marty short timing and brilliant. If you haven't seen them, search for them here on youtube right away.
Maybe the best in-depth interview with Martin Short I've ever heard! I grew up a fan of his and really didn't know much about his whole story since he's usually joking in interviews.
As a 26 year old with really bad depression & a recovering addict, I couldn't agree more.... I almost live for the Team Coco channel, whether Conan, Sona, Ted, Woody or Gourley.... I can be insanely down & depressed, yet they immediately put the biggest smile on my face 🙃
Three Amigos is such an underrated classic. It came out before I was even born, but some of my favorite memories are sitting with friends in high school, having some drinks and just watching the movie and laughing our butts off. We all had loved it as children and it was just something we bonded over while also discussing the silly drama of high school, college and life and also all the real loss we had each felt from close family members at young ages which probably had initially brought us together. Three Amigos become a bedrock and we still bring it up every now and again.
Loved hearing Martin talk about his family and summers in Southampton Ontario. Born there - and still live 5 miles away in Port Elgin! Could Listen to these two men talk all day long!!!!❤️🇨🇦❤️
Martin Short is 74 years old!! Dude is sharper than ever!! Not a single step lost with his mind. Love knowing that this is possible. Although, I would still insist on driving.
I adore Martin Short. I first saw him in Godspell in Toronto with that star packed cast - only none of them knew that's where they were heading at the time. Victor Garber, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, Dave Thomas, Martin Short, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Shaffer, Avril Chown, Gerry Salsberg, Rudy Webb and Derek McGrath . In fact, one evening my sister (a dance teacher) and I ended up at a party with some of the cast members I went on to see many of them again along with new faces at Second City in Toronto which I went to for years (along with Yuk Yuk's). They were all there: John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Robin Duke, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Dan Aykroyd, Mike Meyers, Tony Rosato and that is where I first saw Martin Short do Ed Grimley. 🤣A night of laughter is so good for the soul - and these were the best of the best. Of course, I followed them to SCTV and SNL and then all their movies. One of my favourites of Martin's is 'Simple Wish', which I watched with my daughters. What a scream he was in that movie playing a fairy godmother. If you haven't seen it - watch it. Of course 'Father of the Bride 1 & 11 are absolute classics. I love them all...and so miss John Candy. Great interview!!!!
This is just so wonderful to sit and absorb...two celebrities who show that they can both tell stories AND listen. The follow-up questions are every bit as good as those that attempt to switch gears. Congratulations, Ted, on being a very GOOD conversationalist.
Loveeee Martin Short! The first time I saw him was in "Father of the Bride" with Steve Martin and he's been one of my favorite actors to watch since then! Not to mention his genius creation of Jiminy Glick! I loved this interview and appreciated how much he discussed preparation and doing all that you can. God bless you Marty and wishing you every success always!
We’re all thinking it, but Ted is such a fantastic interviewer. I am so glad he decided to do this podcast. His care for preparation, for the guest is so obvious. 👏👏👏👏
What’s great about this show (and this podcast) is Marty is synching with Ted’s easy going, relaxed vibe and thus doesn’t feel the need to be “on” as much. Really lovely interview.

Very enjoyable conversation between the 2 of you. As a Torontonian, now living abroad, it was warming to hear the Canadian references, all of which I can relate to. I've heard this play mentioned quite a few times now in Comedy interviews/circles, and I'm looking up the original castings from like 71-73 and it's obviously got super-heavy hitters like we all know, but I can't figure out why it was SUCH a HUGE deal. Is there something I can watch or read that goes into why this was such a big deal in the comedy/theatre world? @@xhighone I figure that Godspell is one of those cultural artifacts that American actors look back on with fondness when speaking with each other. Because it's basically a black box show with no real mandatory staging requirements, it can be put on easily at every level from highschool to college to Broadway, so many actors have been in a Godspell production at some point in their lives. Almost all the numbers are group numbers, so the emphasis in that show is on working together as a cast rather than letting some cast members be the stars and everyone else supporting them (except for the guy who gets to be Jesus of course). As for the show itself, it has a secular spiritual approach to Christianity, which appeals to many non-Christians as well as liberal Christians. In Canada, the show is known for bringing together much of the SCTV cast before they were the SCTV cast.
I can listen to Martin Short speak all day long. Whether he's being downright hilarious or simply telling a story, he has the charisma to captivate us and brighten our day. Not only a special talent but a wonderful human being as well.
