I liked this series. I think I read it in 2020, around the time of lockdown. I wouldn't put this series on my top 10 list or anything, but it was a lot of fun.
There's a reason why the publisher combined the first two entries into one novel. The Crown Conspiracy by itself isn't that satisfying without getting the payoff in second novel.
It’s a great trilogy! Each book gets better as you go. Side characters have nice character arcs.
I agree the first book is the weakest though.
This makes me worried that the more fantasy I read the less I’ll like it just from my standards increasing. This might even apply to anything enjoyable
I thought this was a lot of fun as SIX books. I can definitely see why it wouldn't work well as twelve+. (I haven't read the earliest prequel and bridge series yet.) The writing is simple. The antics are simple & fun. It's definitely not complicated or super in-depth. The ENDING to these first six books was the most satisfying ending I'd ever read to that point. I'd had this feeling up until the sixth book that most fantasy authors just kept writing "until" and then just stopped! Endings never really felt like endings. Sullivan definitely had an ending in mind, and he wrote, working toward that ending throughout. I really appreciated that.
I didn't like this book AT ALL when I first read it, but I ended up loving it after re-reading it
Another fantastic video! Thank you Matt!
One of my favorite series, definitely keep going
I’m enjoying the belgariad right now
I read that last year and absolutely loved it. It’s very cliche, but the characters have so much charm and the series has some of the best comedy, banter and lighthearted romance I’ve ever seen. Belgariad definitely deserves more love.
I’m halfway through this trilogy. So far, it’s on the border of okay and pretty good. It’s good enough that I’m definitely going to finish the trilogy, but if it doesn’t get better, I’ll be done with the series. I’m unwilling to invest the time to read 10+ books in a series that is just okay/pretty good.
I think part of the problem with the first book is that you're starting off with all of the characters at the beginning of thier arcs. I think they all get more interesting as the series progresses but book 1 is kind of a rough snapshot.
I was stoked for the bromance and banter but Riyria didn't click for me. I found I jive with Greatcoats more which i'd say is along a similar vein
I like how sleepy you look here. Works perfectly with the review. 😆
Have you tried rereading memory sorrow and thorn ?
To me it just felt like an inferior version of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.
Yeah this series is just very average all around, nothing stands out.
NGL, I don't really have any interest in reading Ryria. A lot of people I see recommend the series appreciate Traditional Fantasy a lot more than I do.
I like the Royce and Hadrian books. All the other stuff is trash though.
It was ok but Sullivans world drops in quality after the first 3 books.
Um, I still like the Crown Conspiracy.
I’m just coming to the end of book 2 (as in Rise of Empire so books 3 and 4 technically), and just like the first book it’s just so average. Individual good moments are few and far between and last a very short amount of time. Significant things that happen seem to have no reaction. And the ‘bromance’ between the 2 main characters that I saw lots of reviewers gush about hasn’t hit the mark at all so far, in fact they really don’t have that many interactions in the grand scheme of things. Ultimately it’s been disappointing so far.
Wild to me to see a Riyria reread when Shadows of the Apt has been on hold-make it make sense! 😅
I also liked this series in first read early on in my adult fantasy journey-This makes a reread much less likely for me!
LOL. It's because I'm reading Shadows of the Apt in a physical book, whereas I am hunting for more audiobooks.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews ahhhh I see I see. For what it’s worth the Apt audios are fantastic!
Calling Michael J Sullivan a pedestrian writer, while at the same time calling Ruocchio's debut "Magical" is wild.
I think if you were to give 100 people a Sullivan book and a Ruocchio book, a vast majority would say the Ruocchio book has superior writing.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews More pompous, sure. Better writing? Disagree. All love, Matt. Love your content :)
@@PrimateNine While I am certainly not a fanboy of Sun Eater (two books in), calling the prose "pompous" without recognizing the POV and strong character voice feels like a critique on shaky foundations.
@@e.matthews a bit less shaky than calling Sullivan “pedestrian”
I’ve only read 2 of Sullivan’s books. Nolyn and Farilane. Nolyn was very good and Farilane was amazing! I got to Esrahaddon and only made it about a quarter of the way through. Hated it.
Ryria has so much Esraharddon history! - or future, I guess. 😅
Dang disappointing!
